I can spot a Steyr dashboard from a mile away! Is that an old 90s?

Also to answer your question, the light medium off road vehicles are for troop support. They don't have much armour or armour mounts and are for easy towing by the medium logistics vehicles which are for tank support.

The heavy logistic vehicles have 15tonne hitch capacity which can actually tow like 50 tonnes making around 950 ft lb torque. They are for armoured division maintenance and are able to tow treaded vehicles and fully lift them. They're the only ones in the Steyhr logistics vehicles that can be armoured with IED protection, IIRC.

Unles they've put out new models in the past 5 years?

Is it possible to mod suspension so the leaf spring will be at the top of axle, not the bottom? Looks like it will give a lot of ground clearance.

yeah, that's known as spring over axle, that does offer more clearance. It's a little harder than a regular lift because you have to cut and weld on new leaf spring mounts. Plus with a vehicle with more power, you can get axle wrap on your springs
>>
>>16925800
>>16925825
Yeah. The Canadian LSVWs have that and are incredibly uncomfortable as a result.

Those and (I think) the Suzuki Samurai are the only vehicles I can think of that have that design. They're just incredibly uncomfortable and therefore aren't really made much for the civilian market.
>>
>>16925825
>>16925845
Why would anyone even want leaf springs on their suv? I just don't get what was going through the heads of jackasses who designed those suspensions. Like... lets fuck up their ride comfort, suspension travel and safety for... for what exactly?
>>
>>16925845
a lot of pick up trucks with rear leaf springs come like that. It's like manufacturers have no idea it exists. Spring under is far superior, it protects steering components, and honestly, once you had lockers and a fairly large tire you need it to be underneath if you don't have anti wrap bars which would just defeat the purpose of the spring under clearance.

An exception would be like on the toyota pick ups, they just have the little 2.4l 4 cyl that won't torque around the axles. Or any under powered vehicles.
>>
>>16925897
reliability, strength, and cost effectiveness. They can also be designed to hold a ton more weight then a coil or air shock. Such as why they are on suv's and trucks.

Flex. They have a bit better flex compared to coils of the same length. The problem is that once they get too tall, they take up too much length to be worth it on samurais or wranglers.

However, once you're past like 38s, they no longer become that much better or cheaper. Besides, most people who go above 35s have the money for coils and 11 different shocks anyway.

>Flex. They have a bit better flex compared to coils of the same length.
Nah, mang, not buying that. They do hold load better, but not the flex. Unless leafs are thing and skinny, but then they don't hold load any better than spring coils.
>>
>>16925992
>Unless leafs are thing and skinny, but then they don't hold load any better than spring coils.
this is how people did samurai and cj-7 lifts for cheap back in the 2000s
>>
>>16925992
>>16925969
they have worse flex. Coils have better down travel and spring rate tune ability. But leafs are fucking amazing for modding already leafed vehicles for stretching wheel bases on the cheap, or lifting on the cheap.

for exampl. you can swap STOCK jeep wrangler yj springs onto a suzuki samurai for a small amount of lift, and to stretch the wheel base for basically 3 hundred bucks. And get a ton more flex.

expensive as hell, and not very well known or widely produced for a bunch of different axle types. I would love to get some and put 35's on my jeep without upgrading axles, but they just don't make them. Plus think about how custom they would have to be to fit different steering and axles for different vehicles.

>So basically poorfag's choice
So, to drop the poor fag status you have to spend more on a less effective item?
>>16925992
>Nah, mang, not buying that.
One of the biggest benefits of leaves is they have a more constant spring rate and travel under a broader range of loadings. Without the aid of an adjustable airbag (which introduces a new set of problems), a coil spring rate won't cope with such variables, progressive or not, any where near as well as a leaf.
And FYI, the leaf sprung Jeeps and Suzukis you speak of have long been coil suspended (in all but the most obscure commercial applications) once coil technology was more proven from a reliability perspective.
>>
>>16926072
unlike IFS, there is no advantage for leaf springs other than cost when offroading (weight capacity aside, of course)

>>16925992
well when it comes to vehicles under 35 inch tyres, you can either upgrade leaf springs for $500 or spend $3000 to upgrade coils. Or you can spend $3500 to upgrade coils and reach 38+ inch tyres.
sure the coils will be "better" but for the price differential, there's no point.

>what weight is a jeep or samurai undergoing when rock crawling
You completely missed the point I was making. I was making the point that the mentioned vehicles were leaf sprung at a time when simplicity was king, and relatively unproven technologies offered more pitfalls than rewards. Same reason Landrovers and Landcruisers were once leaf, then progressed to coils.
>there is no advantage for leaf springs other than cost when offroading
And consistent repetitive performance. It also removes the requirement for suspension links/arms.
>>
>>16926140
>You completely missed the point I was making.
so i did. thanks for explaining it better. i was agreeing with you regarding "cost", then
>It also removes the requirement for suspension links/arms.
yes it does. hence simplicity and cost.

but my other point still stands: if you had $10 000+ to spend on an upgrade, leaf springs past 38 inches would not be advisable.

theyre very energetic dogs, if you can dedicate an hour or more of actual play a day for the first few years theyre pretty good and calm down a lot.
but part of getting them to calm down is they either need a job at home or to go with you wherever you go and to be mentally engaged to be happy.
and to keep them from getting destructive as pups they just need to have mentally engaging toys and time with you
she chills out really well on leash or with the saddlebags on but if you turn her loose in the woods she'll just go play all day.

But a leaf sprung SFA has more travel than double wishbone IFS. How is that not an advantage? And what advantage does the IFS have?
>>
>>16926021
Because in theory they're perfect to armchair offroaders.

In reality there's a LOT of cons that some with them and it's nearly impossible to justify those cons for the cost when you can just run larger tires instead.
>>
>>16926283
1. we're comparing SFA to SFA leaf springs to SFA coils. i still don't see any advantage to SFA leaf springs other than their enormous price advantage.

2. independent suspension has the benefit of desert running. solid axles have the benefit of being better on all other terrain.

>>16926266
to my knowledge, steyr didn't make any of the armoured LMTVs for Canada. prove me wrong, but i just haven't seen any in ontario.
the general consensus on light medium vehicles is that they're support for infantry who would rather carry the extra weight in terms of cargo / trailers than in armour. this is why nothing but the heavy logistics vehicles are really armoured. this is also why there are armour mounts on the AVGP caterpillars. if they're doubling as innafield logistics vehicles, they want to use the extra weight for the field antennas or comms instead of 2 tonne anti-anti-material armour that is constantly attached.

How much gear? 4 people limits you to a crew cab but if you stick to 3, don't have much gear, and you don't like the 3rd person then you can squeeze by with an extended cab.

>can haul dirtbikes without towing
How many dirtbikes? Is this going to be separate trips or do you need the vehicle to do all of this at once? Dirtbikes OR gear is easy. Dirtbikes AND gear is a bit harder.

>high reliability motor with decent power
>decent aftermarket
Both of these are easy to find. Aftermarket might steer you away from the Frontier.

>not ridiculously expensive for the year
Well that throws the Tacoma out the window.

05+ frontiers have a better motor, better frame, better trans, and stronger suspension than equivelent years tacos.

And because the frontier uses pretty much a slimmed down titan frame all the titan suspension bits essentially bolt right up with minimal effort. People use titan control arms for cheap frontier mid travel kits all the time.

Aftermarket isnt as fuckhuge as it is for the tacoma but it is there and you can buy pretty much anything you need off the shelf for a frontier.

So you don't want the question to be less vague. Either you want to give an exact answer (and thus inaccurate guess) based on vague criteria, or you want to give a vague answer that doesn't tell him anything more than he already knew.

Or under this particular circumstance, there's also the possibility you're a fanboy that just wants him to buy whatever it is you like and you don't care about his criteria.

>decent mileage/range
Everyone knows what truck mileage is. Typically less than 20mpg and usually in the mid to low 15mpg range. Trucks also have pretty standardized gas tanks.

Obviously enough information was given in this criteria to infer something in the 15-20mpg+ range with a 16+ gallon tank. Y're retarded ass couldn't figure this out?

>lease define. For most trails this could simply mean "Not an RV"
It's clear you've never done any significant offroading in your life.

There is a huge difference between trails you can easily do in a full size truck and trails you can do in a small and midsize pickup.

>big enough for gear and 3-4 people
3-4 people does not mean "three people in an extended cab". It means 3 people or 4 people. Meaning enough room to take 3 people with the possibility of fitting 4 people. Your response was full fucking retard.

>>can haul dirtbikes without towing

You want either a midsize "1/4ton" or half ton crew cab. A 4' short box crew cab is big enough to fit a couple dirt bikes with the tail gate down. And I'd chuck a rooftop tent over the cab for touring purposes. I reckon a midsize like a Colorado or Tacoma is big enough for me if I was doing similar.

>Obviously enough information was given in this criteria to infer something in the 15-20mpg+ range with a 16+ gallon tank.
So... 90% of trucks.
That really narrows it down. Someone coming from an 82 F250 that gets 8mpg on the highway might define "decent economy" differently than someone in a 2000s econobox that gets 40+.>>16931759

>It's clear you've never done any significant offroading in your life.
I've have you know I've done much "significant offroading"

Most trails are perfectly fine for fullsize trucks, especially the trails you're likely to take an overland/expedition vehicle down and then expect it to get you back home 700 miles away. If he plans on doing some specific trails where fullsize trucks are known to have trouble, then that could throw a full size out the window, narrowing the search by a large margin.

>Meaning enough room to take 3 people with the possibility of fitting 4 people.
The only thing that would throw out is a single cab. How much gear you have that needs to be kept dry and whether or not you need that gear and room for a 4th person at the same time could potentially eliminate all extended cab options, narrowing down the search.

>If you cannot understand a criteria as simple as "can haul dirtbikes without towing" you're fucking hopeless.
You can throw 1-2 dirtbikes on a rack on the back of an SUV to extend interior space while saving on wheelbase. You can't do that with 3-4.

They're really easy questions that can take potential vehicles down from thousands to a few dozen, making the search a lot easier. Why are you so opposed to them being asked?
>>
>>16931759
>Obviously enough information was given in this criteria to infer something in the 15-20mpg+ range with a 16+ gallon tank

15mpg with a 16 gallon tank is 240 miles. That's pretty pathetic. If he went out of his way to mention range I'd think he wants more than the bare minimum. For reference, maximum range for a 6.5 Suburban is around 950 miles, 5.7 is around 750 miles.

I've never had an issue with my fullsize that a midsize would have solved but mine is quite a bit smaller than most fullsize pickups.

Light helps a lot, but imo it's over rated. My brother has a 90 yota P/U (ur-Tacoma), and it weighs under 3000 lbs since the body work is falling off, but my almost twice as heavy diesel K5 will go anywhere he can go that it isn't literally too wide for (well, he also can be a little more aggressive in mud) but on rock or logs or in the sand, my better geometry and better vehicle control skills mean I'm always pulling him out and not the other way around.

And it's not like I've got a better power to weight ratio.

In descending order of importance (IMO):
Flex
Absolute weight
Power to weight
Tire
Ground clearance
Width
Lockers
Gearing
Breakover
Approach and departure
Width (only applicable for tight trails)
Balls
Skill

Yeah, Suburbans are big, but even in a park, it'll shock you what someone with chops can do with one, and there are obstacles where the wheelbase is an asset. And for taking a trail to a camp? Piece of cake.
>>
>>16933666
>skill is the least important part of the vehicle
skill is not part of the vehicle. you can't compare "skill" to "width" but you can compare everything else on that chart to each other.

skill should be in its own separate category

Live axles and limited slip differentials are not mutually exclusive and dont have really anything to do with each other other than one being a mechanical component of the other.

How difficult would it be to drop the front diff and install 4.10 gears. Its a TTB. The reason I want 4.10 is because I can get a bigger diff for the rear out of an explorer that comes with a 4.10 so it would be much cheaper to do the whole swap. I plan on running 33s

I plan on making this into an overlander. Its pretty fun driving it on back roads and the woods.

MFW I'm not the only 6.5 autist out there.

On a side note, can anyone redpill me on the Halogen vs LED vs HID argument on fog/auxiliary lights? I try to research the points made here and come up with nothing. Only thing I can find is FAA research into pilots reporting LED navigation/landing lights are much more visible in incliment weather. I found another paper from the NC DOT saying the same.
>>
On the subject of lighting, I reckon this Video's a good watch;
http://www.fyrlyt.com/
Sure, you could see it as blowing their own whistle, but I kind of share their view.
I'd personally prefer to run high wattage Halogens, second to 4200k (at the highest) HIDs. I don't mind LEDs as long as they're a low intensity designed for a good close range spread, as I reckon LED "driving lights" or high intensity lightbars have an awful ability to not only make the foreground incredibly bright, but also wash out the area the light's focused on in a way that makes it harder to make out contrasts (I believe it's similar reasons yellow tint glasses are great for snow or light coloured sand driving on a bright sunny day).
Disclaimer; that's my opinion, but I think that LED driving lights are a meme with an awful lot of momentum. I concede that the lightbars represent fantastic value for money in terms of "bang for buck", and depending on personal preference can make for a neater, more space efficient install.
Love to hear other opinions on the subject.

>>16946544
In regards to fog lights I think it was discussed in an earlier thread that LEDs simply don't have the penetration as the blue light is quicker to bounce off the fog itself.

led driving lights are annoying as fuck because of their glare. these are one of the things i wish were actually illegal. just so they stop comming stock on a lot of vehicles.
>>

I think this promo gives a good idea of how much of a contrast washout you get with LED driving lights.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddOwBApX0sI
>>
>>16946887
Those LEDs are re-engineered to shit in order to provide a redshift that you don't find on other LED bars (chinkshit or regular). By evidence of the way that glare comes up over the horizon (I know nothing about cameras so maybe this point isn't too valid) and of the fact that it needs a heat sink, it's most likely that there are some redshifted LEDs mixed into the lights or they are all shifted themselves.
Also because of their supposed pattern, I'd guess these are completely illegal on road unfortunately.

Anyway, the whole point is that these aren't your normal run of the mill LED light bars. Which, by the way, would be fine in Australian and Californian terrain due to their lack of fog in most cases inland.
>>
>>16946898
Even without fog in the equation, I still think that 5000+k LEDs and HIDs are far from optimum. With the Australian example, try spotting a brown kangaroo in the scrub with red dirt up the sides of the highway and you'd get the idea. I still don't think you can go past a large reflector housing and a low temp HID or high output halogen.
I'll admit I've never used a high end LED driving light, and have never witnessed the ARB lights IRL as opposed to on camera (which may make them look less favourable).

I think the shills for Fyrlyt have some good points even taking their obvious salesman motivation into account.
>>
>>16946933
I have 75W Apollo KC lights that have a spot and fog pattern. I just aim the spot down as much as possible on the roads to make them semi "legal" and they still retain their pierce and fog pattern. If I'm really innawoods down fire roads or back roads, I'll just aim the spots higher because I want to see deer (or kangaroo like you said). But mainly I'm just scared of skinwalkers or mutant bears or something.

I have seen expensive LED bars and they honestly don't seem to give that much of an advantage from a spot / pierce pattern. The only down side is that unless you're lead vehicle, you can't have the spot aiming upwards. LED bars are no issue being behind you, though.

Anyway, what was your original question? Now that we're past the technical jumbo, we can actually figure it out, heh. Did you want to get some fog/ driving lights from something or another? Where are you?
Do you go to KFC for their tuesday specials or is it too expensive nowadays for what you get?

Best to worst, for general usage:
HIDs in HID housings
HIDs in halogen housings
LEDs in LED housings
halogens in halogen housings
LEDs in halogens housings

For inclement weather and really long range lighting I'd take LEDs out of consideration entirely.

Also while it doesn't seem ideal, there are lifetime warranty PMD relocation kits that move it to the top of the intake rather than to the bumper. Maybe that protects it from moisture better?
>>
>>16946863
It's a 95 ranger it has TTB front suspension. And I plan to do a 2 inch lift w/ a f150 spring swap
>>
>>16946957
This is presuming the lights are aimed correctly anyway. Without taking the aim into account, I'm purely talking about temperature colour and perceived contrast from within the light beam.
My original question was to simple incite aimed discussion. My current setup is a pair of Cibie Super Oscars I've converted with Lightforce branded 35w Ballasts/igniters and Chinese eBay 4300k globes. Before hand I had a pair of Lightforce Blitz 240 which I reckon are the single best consumer reflectors you can buy, but some meth head decided they wanted those lights more than me, hence the leftover Lightforce HID ballasts.

If you wanted to aim discussion, then why didn't you answer my KFC question, faggot?

Anyway, light aim has little to no effect on fog lights with no beam pattern. But no one makes aftermarket PURE fog lights, I don't think. There's simply no market for them.

I too fear methheads stealing my lights. At least I have a dashcam running in Taynger like 24/7. Takes up almost no battery, too. Anyway, reflectors do make a huge difference - more than the wattage, actually. That's a good point and good you knew that. But you can also get away with some tinfoil around a styrofoam bowl and a 100W light shining into it. IT'd probably make as big of a spread as a regular 50W bulb with good reflectors.

Do you have a pattern for your current setup? Since you're doing discussion, I'll try and get a pic tonight since /o/nterrible is projecting an inch of rain. That means I can run the spots on the road and no one will really know the difference.
I run the spotlights aimed up when driving on rural roads really innawoods and turn them off whenever another car approaches me. Aim them a bit to the right and it really puts my heart at ease when doing 80+ down semi-paved roads
I'd have to find another spot to mount a winch solenoid box though...

Playing devil's advocate they have no citations for their position. They cite the AMA position on LED street lights, but on further research the AMA warn against LED street lights because they disrupt sleep cycles, not because of better light penetration. Otherwise, I can find dozens of people who claim that Fyrlyt's claims are lies, but no scientific studies on the matter.

While I believe you, can you provide a citation? As far as the PMD goes, mine is good for the time being. I already relocated it into the passenger compartment with an added heatsink and cooling fan. LED lights are blue shifted:
http://glamox.com/upload/2013/01/25/illustration_led-basics_01.jpg

Raleigh scattering affects blue lights more:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayleigh_scattering#Cause_of_the_blue_color_of_the_sky

Therefore, LEDs scatter more in air in general(more humid air). Yellow is preferred, though because blue is too close to UV and red is for rear of the vehicle (this is why rear fog lights must be red tinted [but not red shifted])

That's exactly the sort of discussion I'm trying to to cite. While a lot of what Fyrlyt is claiming mirrors my opinions, I don't want to fall down the trap of drinking the coolaid. And it's interesting you dug up the fact the AMA was actually talking about sleep patterns.
I don't want to come off as a shill, and I wouldn't be able to justify spending that sort of money for what they retail anyway, and would sooner buy second hand otherwise reputable brands as I have in the past.
Still, the thing I can't get past is with the current trend of blue/white driving lighting that washes out colour range, at least to my eyes, although ~4300k HID seems to work well for me at least with great penetration anyway.

On a different note, have you given the 12v fit out any more thought? I was also thinking with the ability to run a second alternator, would it be worthwhile having a separate 24v loop to run an inverter off?

>Why is this site build like one of these quick weight loss pages?
Heh, that's the exact feeling I got too. Hence the coolaid remark.
Having said all that there doesn't seem to be any unhappy consumer reports either.

The other thing to think about is the flagship units are 250w EACH, so that's 500w worth of auxiliary lighting for a pair to achieve that output. But then I used to run a quartet of 100w auxiliary lights anyway.
>>
>>16950875
I don't really see two of their 250w lights outperforming five 100w Hella 4000s to any noteworthy extent and with the $750 price tag on just two of those, I'll stick with the Hellas.
>>
>>16950933
Same, for the money I'll stick with what I've got. Even if I found myself with some disposable funds to blow on a brand new set of lights, I'd sooner buy another pair of Lightforce 240 Blitz which retail at 2/3rds the price of even the base 150w fyrlyts, and 2/5ths the price of the 250w models.
I'd happily rock a set of Rallye 4000s too.

Yeah because 90% of LEDs are 5000-6000k (blue tint) unless the diode is coated to filter out blue light which kills output. The blue tint to the light wakes you, fucking up sleep patterns. That itself has absolutely nothing to do with light penetration.

>>16950563
>The best thing against LEDs I can find is glare and lack of long distance projection.

Which for anything other than an offroad flood light, are two of the three biggest concerns for automotive forward lighting. The other is precision control over beam pattern, which most LEDs also lack, most notably in light bars and it's also the biggest issue with PnP LED bulbs. They're incompatible with existing optics you've got little to no control over pattern. More light where you don't need it means less light where you do need it.

I agree 100%. I want to be able to explain the science behind it, not just parrot talking points from marketers.

As said earlier, I can't seem to find too much info on the subject. As far as the 4300k lights washing out colors, the LED marketers will say 4300k is closer to sunlight, and is easier on the eyes and shows better colors than a halogen. With no scientific citations I feel I would be a shill one way or the other.

As far as performance videos go, the only thing I can find is people comparing LED and halogen fog lights for "muh cool colors", not light penetration through fog. It's annoying as hell. The only video I can find that supports the pro halogen argument is this one:
http://youtu.be/m5j8ucUd7iM.

>>16950652
These is the kind of stuff that makes me personally agree with the theory, but I can't find anything to back this up, and LED marketers just pull the "muh light is closer to sunlight" talking point.

>>16951222
Playing devil's advocate for a moment, long distance isn't what you are looking for in a fog light for inclement weather. One can argue with a proper lens suited for a fog pattern could have superior light output over a halogen. I am looking for some sort of proof to disprove the LED marketer's argument.

>the LED marketers will say 4300k is closer to sunlight

Funny, most just say whatever they have closest to sunlight. Usually that's 5000-6000k, I've seen as much claimed as 6900k which is obviously false. There's some variance as the color of sunlight varies and ambient daylight is much cooler than direct sunlight, but still. I'd give direct sunlight 4000-4500k and ambient daylight 4500-5000k.

4300-4500k is going to be the purest white and without taking differing color indexing between technologies into account, should provide the widest range of good color contrast though something with a green, yellow, or amber tint would likely provide the best contrast for most cases since green is the color your eyes pick up contrast in the best.

It's really all trade offs until you get into blue light and poor beam control.

>long distance isn't what you are looking for in a fog light for inclement weather.

No, but you do want good beam control and a low color temperature, both of which LEDs struggle with.

>>16952596
>I want to be able to explain the science behind it
No kidding. I guess for myself I'm comfortable using what I know works for me, and that's sub-4500k-ish. Apparently HIDs start to suffer exponentially once you start going down in colour temperature below 4000k.

One place I appreciate LEDs is work-floodlight applications. They work great for campsite setup. A few of the older dozers and loaders at work have had old Halogen lamps "upgraded" to cheap LED units which work good at low speed as broad spread flood lights.

Sorry I can't offer anything further than anecdotal preferences.

>Square bodies

yum...
I myself can't decide whether the ultimate goal is an original 12H-T powered HJ61 VX Cruiser or a 2nd gen Bronco/6th gen SWB F100...
For the time being the Montero does the job.

You're worthless and will never amount to anything. There's plenty of info there for you to recommend whatever it is you like with no care of what he's trying ask. Stay BTFO, McDonalds fag.
