i don't think you know how much gas costs

i spent almost 1000 euros on gas alone by doing a 7 day road trip in europe. with a 1.2 4 cylinder engine and a car that weighs 900 kilos and drinks 6 liters per 100km

it's not the 60's anymore, driving around the world in a VW camper can only be done if you're rich. let alone a monstrosity "overlander" that probably drinks as much gas as 10 cars.

The practical thing tho is to get a 4door 4wd put some shocks/springs and some 33s. Get some good tents, a good cooler maybe a fridge. You can do that real cheap. 10 grand if you get yourself an old toyota and some good steel/tires/recovery gear and a engine rebuild.

If you are only going out for a week or two at a time , i totally agree with you.

Full time though that shit gets old especially if you are doing some seasonal work here and there to supplement your income.

Having a really cool rig turns you from a dirtbag to a rockstar also.
People are excited to see you coming if you have a cool rig and will tell you about places to camp while you are traveling through their area.

Also lets face it, overlanding includes a lot of sleeping in towns and cities. No way you can pitch a tent in a city.

Not that I'd put an arbitrary time frame on it, but that is what separates overlanding from general offroading. Whether or not you intentionally choose a "harder trail because its more fun" is also arbitrary. I offroad to get to good spots, not for photo opportunities in a 4x4 magazine.

I will never understand the point of camping vehicles. Just get a good fun car and stay in comfy middlebrow hotels. Your travels will be much more enjoyable than lugging around in a 0,5 mpg truck which is also a shitty bedroom.

Take these two for instance. Their aim is to simply drive across the Congo in a direct "road" route.

I'm currently 6 months into a pan-America bike trip (DR350, perfect for the job) and have talked to a bunch of the old rich Euros in overland trucks. You WOULD NOT FUCKING BELIEVE what they pay in fuel, in order to save a few bucks on accommodation (million dollar truck, sleeping in some gated car park to save $5 on a room). I really can't wrap my head around how that makes any logical sense for anyone: if you need a vehicle like that, it's for travel in the developing world with shit roads, but hotels/hostels in the developing world are CHEAP.

The one place I've traveled (RealTraveler™ reporting) where a 4x4 really makes sense is Africa, since a proper truck is necessary to get into the parks. But a Hilux with a roof tent will cost a tiny fraction (and be far far easier to get fixed if anything goes wrong) than a Mercedes overlander. Literally everywhere else in the world a 4x4 is massive overkill with no discernible benefit.

AFAIK in the developing world the big truck overlanders set up exclusively in gated and guarded parking/camping spots. They're not off by themselves in the wilderness because they'd be robbed/raped/murdered. They're at the same hotels/hostels/campsites as other travellers.

That's because the big truck overlanders are akin to glamping. The only difference is that to get to the parks in the developing world you need more ground clearance than one of those bus sized RVs

In Mexico no matter where you try to camp someone will come to extort money from you. Just look on iOverlander and you'll see that every public land campsite (eg beaches) have a price imposed by some local for dubious services (they'll claim to maintain the road or pick up litter or whatever bullshit, but with the implicit threat of robbery if you don't pay). Only managed to avoid this in a couple very remote beach camping spots in Baja.

In cities I couch-surfed with a few nights in hostels.

In Baja I mostly camped, but you're being extorted in most cases for 100-150 pesos a night: what a hostel or cheap hotel room would cost in the rest of the country. Camped some on the mainland at beaches and in the jungle, but always paid (usually very very cheap).

I ended up losing my tent after leaving Mexico, but I can't see anyone sane camping in Guatemala/El Salvador/Honduras/Nicaragua.
