It's hard to go from being a classic to not being a classic. Do you mean when a car turns into a pile of bolts?

Have you even jumped the Solenoid yet to see if it's the starter or solenoid?? Have you checked all the fuses?
>>
>>16902362
Brand new solenoid, my only thought could be that the small rubber connector boot fell off and I tried just wrapping the bare wire around the terminal and squashing it with a bolt

I'm going to get a real eyelet fitting and crimp it on when I get the chance.

Fuck mayne.
>>
>>16902382
didnt you post a picture of it and there was a fuck huge crack in the solenoid?
>>
>>16902392
I bought two just because I knew it being a Ford, is need a spare.

>>
>>16902382
Could have a bad starter, try using a jumper wire off the battery cable and touch it to the signal post on the starter (the small one)

If that doesn't kick the starter over either your starter is bad or the battery power/ground has gone fucky
>>
>>16902426
I'll check. I don't think ground is the issue though just because the rest of the electrical system works. I am pretty sure it's the solenoid just because there's not even a click at the moment. Just nothing.
>>
>>16902296

345
>>
>>16902442
Well if jumping the starter works then it's either a the solenoid or a wiring problem. Check if the solenoid has a good ground too, sometimes those ground through the body of the solenoid, chrysler had a habit of grounding of the start solenoids through the neutral saftey switch which was fucking annoying.
>>
>>16902486
I'll try it when I get a chance. Would be super gay if it's the starter because this one is a few months old.
>>
>>16902486
yep, this is what happened to me
>>
>>16902230
Mine's totally out. It's gotta be right after the battery or something.
>>
>>16902486
>chrysler had a habit of grounding of the start solenoids through the neutral saftey switch which was fucking annoying.
Tell me this happens on the XJ platform. I need to check if this is the case and that may be the issue of my starting issue.
>>
>>16902975
Either unplug and plug back in your crank position sensor or hit your starter with a hammer, always works for XJs, both super common problems
>>
>>16902996
I've already had issue with the CPS, it's a different symptom. Cranks, rapidly slows down. No clicking. Starts with a jump. When the CPS was out of whack it wouldn't start at all.
>>
>>16902960
That blows. I hope this helps. The battery is new so it shouldn't be that either.

Warranties are fucking awesome.
>>
>>16903008
Sounds exactly like a junk battery. Have yours tested at a shop for the CCA or try a battery you know is good. Even if a battery is fairly new, a dead cell is possible, had a few of those at work
>>
>>16903039
Battery is brand new. I may actually do that. But first, I do need to get the thing unfucked electrically.

>>
>>16903157
Might as well. Harness looks shot to hell anyway.
>>
>>16903131
I tried making them, but it's such an oddball shape and quite a thick gauge that I eventually just said to hell with it and ordered the proper ones. Thankfully the car doesn't really NEED anything other than those springs, so that's the biggest purchase I have for now. Although an electric fan will be the next thing on the list, as well as getting a deck and speakers wired in. Driving in silence is getting old quick.
>>
>>16903292
What fan are you getting? I might be getting my radiator boiled out while the engine is getting swapped and I need a fan that isn't just crank driven.
>>
>>16903299
>Crank driven

That's exactly what I've got right now and it sucks sitting in traffic in the summer. I'm just getting a 16 inch universal fan. Mount it in front of the radiator to push air into the engine bay, then remove the crank mounted fan and just leave the pulley there to drive the alternator belt.

I'm thinking about putting one of those aftermarket overdrives in my 50 ford. right now it has a sbc and a 350 trans but to get up to interstate speeds its working too hard (3000 if my rpm tach can be trusted but it sounds like more) running it for hours at 65 seems like a bad idea.

anyhow how do those aftermarket overdrives work? how do you install them? what do they cost? are they bullshit?

Cometbuddy read his firing order diagram backwards, carb was breathing fire like a pissed off dragon. Was too late at night to fire it up in the right order by the time he realized what was going on. Open headers, no seats or floors, would have toasted the poor bastard if it had backfired out the bottom. Next chance to fire it up is tomorrow evening, stoked.

Posted here a few days ago with a picture of the 69 mustang i'd been working on.

Would any of you guys know the solution to an issue where the car "stumbles" when you first begin to accelerate out of a stopped position or coasting?

I've had the car stall out a few times (it only seems to stall right when you first begin to drive, (get in car, turn car on, shift into drive, press gas pedal, stall))

If i'm rolling at a decent pace or driving when i press the accelerator it'll stumble but wont stall out.

any ideas?

(sorry i dont have a new picture, i didn't bother to take any since the last one)

Accelerator pump needs replacing most likely
>>
>>16914397
>Accelerator pump
I probably should also mention that it was rebuilt in 2003 or so.

Could they have just done a shitty job and slapped a bad pump on there?
>>
>>16914368
Either your accelerator pump diaphragm is shot, or more likely if the car had been sitting the passage is clogged/varnished. Try cleaning the carburetor. My favorite way to do so is boil the carb for 20 minutes, with as little parts on as possible, in a mixture of 1 part lemon juice and 4 parts water
>>
>>16914407
It's not like a fuel pump, but a small chamber within the carburetor. 14 year old rubber, which is what it is, usually is fucked
>>
>>16914407
the carburetor, the carburetor was rebuilt.

its late, sorry for the confusion.
>>
>>16914407
That's a long time to pass for a carb to not have been rebuilt again.
Buy a carb kit, clean the fuck out of it and it will run plenty better as long as you've done it right

Running too lean or too rich or a primary jet may be dirty.

>I've had the car stall out a few times (it only seems to stall right when you first begin to drive, (get in car, turn car on, shift into drive, press gas pedal, stall))

My Duster did this exact thing, the idle jets were so rich it was pumping smoke out the exhaust.

>>16914397
>>16914416
Accelerator pumps only trigger when you lay into the throttle. Not saying you guys are wrong but the accelerator pump may be timed way too early.

>>16914407
Work the throttle without the air cleaner, find out when the pump is squirting or if it's squirting at all.

>>16914368
>If i'm rolling at a decent pace or driving when i press the accelerator it'll stumble but wont stall out.
Also, just to be safe, confirm all 8 cylinders are firing

(or 6 if you have a 6)

>>16914725
But i want to do it right, I don't want carb fires in parking lots because it needs to be doused with starting fluid to fire a cylinder.

Hey all, so I had a hunch that turned out to be correct.

It seems to start doing it, and get worse, as the engine heats up... when i first drove it today, it didn't have the stumbling issue for the first couple of minutes. Then when the engine heated up it appeared.

This was the same case yesterday afternoon, but i wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

I unfortunately cant do much internally on the carb, the car isn't mine (its my fathers) and he doesn't want me to mess with the carb, save for the adjustment screws and springs and such.

I reckon your choke is still on for a while and so once it warms up and the choke is off the engine starts leaning out and bogging.

It could also be non carb related like ignition.

>>
>>16919546

>>
>>16919640
You need to figure out why it's leaning out in the first place.

I recommend you buy an A/F meter, it's like an o2 you put on your exhaust but you can monitor your A/F in real time. It's invaluable in trying to tune carbs imo.

Just gotta know how to weld.
>>
>>16919684
I'm very new when it comes to carburetors, (honestly, theres a lot in general that i dont know) so apologies if i dont completely grasp things right away. The choke plate is this thing circled in blue, right?

Its late here and I've put the mustang away in the garage, so i'll try this tomorrow and report back.
>>
>>16919836
Yes that is indeed the choke plate
>>
>>16919836
Yes, also that pump looking thing on the right is called the choke pulloff If it's working right it should crack open the choke plate under high throttle even if the choke is still supposed to be on.

These, like all diaphragms in the car can wear out and if yours did it can be causing the engine to run mighty rich when under throttle.
>>
>>16919836
Is this the same type of carb on the Mustang? If so Motorcraft 2100 and 2150 carbs are incredibly easy to rebuild, you can find videos for it on Youtube if you can't figure it out yourself, rebuild kits are pretty cheap too

If their job was ruining the cars look to protect it while rolling into a wall at 1mph then it's mission accomplished
>>
>>16920016
Maybe, they can wear out fairly quick and cause problems. sometimes it's easier just to remove them and let the car warm up for 10 minutes before you drive it.

>>16920028
That's exactly their job.

You'll notice you can hit things moving slowly with them and only fuck up the rubber piece that costs $70 but a modern bumper is a $2000 repair if you accidentally back into a pole.
>>
>>16920028
It's not 1mph, it's 5mph. That's why they are called 5 Mile per hour Bumpers
>>
>>16919978

Euro bumpers certainly look better but it's not a cheap conversion. There is some cutting, welding, and painting involved, nevermind sourcing the parts which on their own are gonna cost a few grand if you can find them. The whole lower front valance and all the mounts are different. It's a real pain in the dick, but it's on the list for whenever I get around to paint.
>>
>>16920043
The Euro bumpers aren't going to incur 2k worth of damage if you hit something, but I would recommend just not driving your car into immovable objects, BMW was nice enough to supply you with an ample amount of glass to see such things around you

>>16920074
They are called 5mph bumpers, but will still be damaged if you drive into something at 5mph, and even at 1mph the shocks compress to the point where they don't come back and you have to replace them anyway (I tested this before tossing my NA bumper in the trash)
>>
>>16920084
I just did it on my E24, took 3 hours, $800 for front and rear bumpers with all brackets, and I was seeing E28 bumpers for less than E24 bumpers, there was a complete E28 euro rear on Craigs for $100 in my area. There's really no other option, the cars just look ridiculous with the US bumpers.
>>
>>16920109
>The Euro bumpers aren't going to incur 2k worth of damage if you hit something,
Well they will if you hit another modern car.

>but I would recommend just not driving your car into immovable objects,
Easy to say, i probably shouldn't wear a motorcycle helmet because i don't plan on crashing too.

These bumpers are also good if someone hits you instead of the other way around.
Regardless they did their job well despite being ugly.

It only does it when shifted into drive (yeah, its an autotragic) not reverse, not park. Only in drive. What do you all think about the possibility of it being a transmission thing? I'm doubtful because the transmission doesn't really have to do with fuel flow, but on the other hand, eh, idk.

Does it stall when you left off the brake or when you press the gas pedal?

Check the tranny fluid after a 10 minute drive or so.

Damn nigga you work fast.

Anyway you guys reckon i can just throw a layer of rattlecan on my existing paint?

PA is entering swamp season and the last thing i need is the frame to start rusting.
While there is no active rust on the frame yet there are areas where there was or where paint is coming off.

Also a flaky gloss white would be less of an eyesore.
>>
>>16927015
gloss anything would look like more of an eyesore imo, because you wouldn't be doing much prep work to make it smooth.

Try some matte or semi gloss or something

if there's a harbor freight near you they sell a pretty cheap undercoating that is actually halfway decent for that frame of yours
>>
>>16927702

Good idea, it'll probably be cheaper too

I have a mechanical fuel pump driven off the cam (ohv engine so V low) and I've recently replaced my fuel lines and added a filter before the pump. The only place to do so is between the metal pipe leading from the tank and the brass fitting on the pump, which is too small a gap for the filter, so I've had to fit the filter and then loop the hose from the output side under the filter to get to the pump, which means the filter and therefore the path for the fuel is now a little higher. There's no pump in the tank, am I correct in assuming that the pump is gravity fed from the tank and so the last 8th or so of the tank is now unusable, or will the pump draw it through just fine?
>>
My tank is in the boot btw
>>
>>16928104
No. Mechanical fuel pumps are pullers. they pull the fuel by creating a vacuum on the inlet side. The pump should draw it through just fine.
>>
>>16928129
Top guy. It's been running fine since but i still have 1/4 of a tank so you know. Thanks a lot fella, saves me some trial and error.
>>
>>16928188
if it's having trouble drawing fuel when the tank is low the fuel pick up could be too high in the tank, or have a pinhole leak in it that gets uncovered when the tank gets empty enough, which would make the pump draw air instead of fuel.

Alright you fuckers, I need help. This shit has had me baffled for days now. So the other day I upgraded my tail lights and turn signals to LED. >>16914032
Here's the fun part. My blinkers no longer blink. Simple solution right? Just get an electronic flasher, no problem. Fucking wrong. With the factory one they just light up and don't blink, but with an aftermarket blinker, nothing works. Here's the big kicker, my hazards work perfectly. All LED, running on the factory relay. Tried the aftermarket ones in place of it and they still work perfectly. So why the fuck aren't my blinkers blinking? Thanks guys.
>>
>>16929676

Do you have any resistors wired in? I think I read somewhere that LED bulbs require resistors because of the lower power required.
>>
>>16929741
I do not. I was hoping to avoid fucking with the factory wiring, but I guess that's my next step.
>>
>>16929770
>>16929676

>>
>>16929676
>With the factory one they just light up and don't blink
Yup. The original flasher is an electromechanical device that requires the relatively high current of an incandescent bulb to operate.

The current heats up a small bimetallic strip in the flasher, causing the metals to expand at different rates. That expansion actually bends the strip causing it to break contact, cool down, unbend, and make contact again.

They're stupid simple but again, they need a good load on them to work.

>with an aftermarket blinker, nothing works

Sounds like you might have a defective unit.

Y'know what, how is the thing powered? Is there a ground terminal or a tab on the case? It might need a ground to operate.

getting close, but it was curvier, the picture i remember was quite recent & in a very grassy & tree-filled place, if that helps anyone who might have the picture.

You can add a resistor to the circuit to simulate the draw of an incandescent bulb.

so it took me a total of 8 hours to replace the fucking things today. First the driveshaft didn't want to come out of the transmission without a 5 pound sledge, then the threads on one of the u bolts stripped out, so the nut just spun on there. 4 hours of chiseling and very careful grinding later and the driveshaft is finally on.

all this to drive it 3 miles to get it inside my garage.

Because they're generally well built.
In regards to E-bodies, they were low production so that's why they're astronomical in price.

Well, first they all turned into dust within a couple of years after being produced. Sometimes even before they were sold.

That meant the ones that were left were harder to get to begin with and fixing them (which they ALL needed) was a major accomplishment. That in turn meant that a nice Mopar at a show was a virtual guarantee of a First Place trophy. And lets be honest here, what drives most restorations is chasing trophies just like every other form of competition.

tl;dr limited supply, difficult restoration, good chance of a win, equals high prices

>>
>>16934887
Maybe the pump is mis-timed?

They're not overly hard to replace, the diaphragm or the nozzle, try some chem tool in the squirter jets first.

i'd take it off the engine in both cases, you don't want a piece falling down the intake.
>>
>>16935484
I suppose it was in a junkyard for a reason then.
>>
>>16935566
Not a junkyard but it was disassembled a long time ago, now i know why.

Still it was $800 which is cheap for a 383 these days.
As long as the block and crank are good that's all i need.
Supposedly it isn't unheard of for the 5th/6th cylinder to starve for oil and seize.
>>
Lookin at my carb I noticed a few things that concern me.

Both have to do with the choke. First is the choke cable being bent at the end, the second is the choke plate being held open with zip-tie.

Can that cable harm operation? Hao fix?
Is the zip-tie a common mod? I assume Holley made these carbs this way for good reason so why fuck with it?
Any advice?

I don't have the linkage either, I just checked the carb repair kit that I got with the car. Just some gaskets and jets in there, but it runs fine other than the choke being fucked.

>>16935802

Found it amongst some random assorted bits.
>>
>>16935823
Up until now ive just relied on pumping the accelerator pedal a few times. Once it starts it tends to keep running 8 times out of 10.

I just fucked a bit with it today and noticed it wouldn't easily go back to default position so I went and had a little look-see under the air cleaner, especially because after getting it most of the way back it still seems to idle a hundred or two too high.
>>
>>16935825
That does indeed look like the right piece of linkage.
>>16935844
The carb is supposed to idle higher when the choke plate is closed. Normal operation of the choke would have 1 or 2 higher steps of idle for when the car is cold, then when you give the gas pedal a little push, it kicks down to the next fast idle speed, or into normal idle.
In your case since it's a manual choke, you'd pull the cable to close the plate, while pushing the pedal to the floor to set the high idle.
Then let the car warm up for a minute or so, then push the choke cable in and give the gas pedal another push to lower the idle speed to normal

I meant that I disengaged the choke from within the car, but it didn't seem to have gone back all the way, hence the higher idle.

The linkage dit indeed fit perfectly. Now for the cable...
