>what did u have to do to the bike
90 percent of the time, when it ran when parked, you need to clean the carburetors, occasionally replace all the rubber fuel lines, usually new battery, and other stuff. I also had to re-bleed the brakes and rebuild the clutch master cylinder.

>have u ever fixed a completely fucked bike some guy was selling on craigs for cheap
Define fucked. I won't touch anything that "was running but then the engine seized" but if it's just been parked for 5 to 20 years, you'll be fine. They are really simple to get working and are cheap to repair

>what dirtbike would u recommend as first bike
Pretty much anything from the 80s or 90s. If you want to ride on the road, pretty much any Japanese 80s road bike that has less than 750cc is a good idea.

>how long it take u to sell bike on average
A week or so. Study Craigslist, and watch what moves quick and how to write a good ad. The bike I posted was actually not that good looking but a decent picture makes a huge difference.

I picked this up for 800 dollars, put about 100 into it and rode it all over the West coast. I think I did about 12k miles in 10 months. If you just get out and ride, and ride often, you'll gain some skill to keep up with people in much quicker bikes.

This is the same bike, but 10 years newer to what I learned on. This would make a great first project. You can buy it for 400 or 450 and probably sell it for 1000 once it's running.

At the very least you need to clean the carburetor, and if you bring the tank to a radiator shop they will remove all rust and reseal it for 100 bucks

Beginner here. I'm going to buy my first bike. Decided on a 1998 Virago 250cc (Yamaha doesn't export newer models to my country). The exhaust pipe has some scratches but i'll replace it anyway.
The chain is brand new, so are the brakes.
Price is low for the year and Mileage. About 47000km.
Clutch and brakes seems fine if a bit wobbly but not too much for it to be a problem.

What do you guys think?
>>
>>16875087
No one is going to buy that for 1000
>>
>>16875089
That's a fair amount of miles for a little 250.

>>16875093
A working, riding, street legal motorcycle that has had a lot of maintenance done will fetch a grand. You could list it for 1150 and it should sell for 1k
>>

>Going by that logic all cars should be banned because they do more damage than a relatively light motorcycle. Your emotion-driven risk assessment isn't supported by statistics of US vehicle accidents.

What logic? The one attribute me, apparently?
I only ever said I don't want a kid riding a busa.
>>
>>16875095
>if it's running it's worth 1k+
Thats not how it works.
It's a shit bike with questionable maintenance, even after you swap the tanks and clean carbs. It's still not worth more than 300$
>>
>>16875089
A 250cc cruiser is several orders of magnitude slower than a 250cc sportbike/sport standard. In fact, it's slower than most recent econoboxes, and handles worse than them too.

Why not just buy a car, roll the windows down, and drive around on slicks to simulate the precarious traction situation?

A busa is probably the tamest "hypersport" there is. It has a built in power limiter. Nobody uses it, but it's there. I saw a kid ride a busa once anyways. 10mph around a corner cars go around at 40. Top lel. Talk about respecting the machine.

I'm more worried about kids on 250-500cc shitbikes cranking the throttle and then learning their "SHARP HANDLING TRACK WEAPON!!!1!!" isn't magic and T boning my car in a corner, or worse, cranking the throttle, then cranking the bars for maximum countersteering, and then cranking the throttle some more until they lowside and end up under a semi

We don't have too many laws, we have wrong laws. Having said that I'm happy that kids don't get to ride supersports.
>relying on the government to regulate your life and we think that's stupid.
Society exists for that reason. You're taken a part of your freedom to live in a better place.

From my point of view someone who gets taken less freedom but doesn't even get anything out of it is the cucked one.

If we're talking motorcycles, they're not part of your natural rights, it's not your right to ride whatever you want at your conditions. This is a fact.
Can our law be better? Yes. Do I want an equivalent to the US one? No.
In the end a two tiers license system should be good enough and the age limits should be 16-18 or 19. It should also be possible to pay to do something like an in depth skill test to be able to ride powerful machines sooner.

The real big problem in my county is not about licenses, it's about vehicle modifications. Now that's a real strike on freedom for no reason whatsoever.

Maybe get a 600 first. Or at least ride one and see if it's enough for you. You have no idea what power is yet. It helps to learn good cornering and throttle control on something that's a little more forgiving with throttle response. The liter bike is much more fun when you can ride it properly.

Thoughts on moving from ninja 300 to current year zx10r? I know it's a massive step up in power, but will the low power mode (60%) be able to help in transitioning? I have ridden ninja 600 of a friend for around 300kms and didn't have any issue with control or anything, but it's only 300kms of experience and only 600cc.
>>
>>16875893
the Fz1 isnt exactly known to be forgiving.

I mean thats 150 BHP on 230 KG wet and it doesnt even have ABS does it?

Thats really skipping a couple steps, id recommend something with about 33% less power.
>>

>>16875956
You shouldn't have an issue, you just need to be very smart with your throttle control, you can't just peg it like on a 300 and expect not to die

>>16875981
Fz1 isnt a tame bike, but it's not a death sentence either. The smart choice is to get something like an fz8 or fz6 instead, just because you don't have a lot of experience with powerful bikes, but if you really want the fz1 go for it

I recently put the stock sprocket back on my DR350, feels NICE. I was dicking around and jerked the throttle in 1st, got the wheel up a foot then I immediately let off. So this is how it begins. Kinda spooky though because I don't have a small dirt bike to practice on and I've seen too many vids of people looping. I'm the same anon from earlier in the weekend thinking about picking up an Indian scout 60.

I talked to three motorcycle guys I know and they all pretty much turned me off from Indian mainly citing price, unreliability and questionable longevity of brand presence.

From my research over the weekend I learned Polaris is the new owners of Indian and are going to use it to replace their Victory brand, but I could not find any information about reliability of their newer models. Does anyone have any information about their reliability history? Also, what other options do I have besides a Scout 60? I want a nice sportster that I can cruise around on but nothing too big so I can ease my way into the feel of bigger bikes. I can always trade up after a few years.
>>
>>16876886
Did the guys you talk to ride Harley's by any chance?
>>
>>16876734
For the sake of giving you varied answers, I'll say:
>reliability, research bike specific problems
>how big of a following (online forums, repair manuals, aftermarket support)
>power and weight/other performance info
>styling
I prefer comfy twisties on a Sunday, then putting down some dirt trails before heading back into town because I ride a dual sport.
Styling comes last for me but it's part of my attachment to the bike. I buy used but I don't want any bikes with shitty spray paint jobs for instance. The closer to stock, the better.
>>
>>16876896
One rides purely sport and dislikes the cruiser his Father in law left him. The other currently rides a Victory or Honda but wants a Harley, and lastly the last one rides a Victory I'm pretty sure.

I know Indian is the main competitor against Harley's for people wanting "American made" bikes but I feel very confident they didn't give me too much of biased answers. I'm coming to this thread to try and get some straight forward answers or directed to where I may find more and better results on my questions.

I really like that Scout 60 but I don't want to waste money on it if it's going to be unreliable as fuck

If you want to start off you can try the Japanese cruisers. It won't be as big or powerful as a Harley or Indian but it has some reliability
>>

>I want a nice sportster that I can cruise around on but nothing too big so I can ease my way into the feel of bigger bikes. I can always trade up after a few years.
Why not start with a Jap cruiser? Honda Shadow 800, Kawasaki Vulcan 750 or 800.

There was a consumer reports reliability study on motorcycles, and Victory had less failures after 4 years of ownership than harley did; Comparable to some of the Japanese bikes (which are the most reliable). Indian is made by Polaris (same company as Victory) so they should be pretty good.

I'll be honest. I'm not the biggest fan of their looks and I feel like their engines will be very under powered. I'm coming from a Ninja 650, not the fastest but had enough kick for a first bike. I'm staying open minded to all brands but will be using the Japanese brands sort of as a last resort. Put it this way, I'd heavily consider a larger engine size that I would work my way into over time than start with what I feel like would be an under powered and unstylish sportster type.

It's all frustrating really because one of the guys just says to get a sports bike and the other two are think it's silly to get a smaller sized engine. All I'm going to do is ride it on the weekends around a nearby state park and on the interstate to relieve stress. I don't need something to take me from CA to FL.

A smaller Harley would be the Softail or Fat Boy
The Scout kinda looks bulky

Harleys excepted if cheap enough and you are or want to become a mechanic. Their aftermarket support makes it practical. Since you post Harleys it's worth remembering that it's difficult to make an HD unfixable unless it melts in a respectable fire.
