Cars your dad almost bought in the 1980s for $13,000 edition

>Cars your dad almost bought in the 1980s for $13,000 edition
More like 13,000 Ostmark and more like actually bought. Could be wrong on the price though.
>>
>>16868781
A story about missing an opportunity like a 250GT Pininfarina for 13,000 is more entertaining than the story of a average bloke buying a trabant

>le muh dad paid 3k for a hemi cuda in the 70s
13k was a shitton of money in the 80s bro. Fuck that car and look at what 13k would have done in Apple. I don't get why people don't understand inflation.
>>
>>16868844
13k in 1980 are 39k now. 13k in 1985 are 29k now. It's not a lot of money for a 250GT. I doubt 39k can even buy you a Ferrari these days, and if they do it'll be a fucking Mondial.

I'd laugh past that shitbox 250 in my F1 desu senpai.
>>
>>16868844
If you bought 6500 shares of Apple when it was $2 AND held the same stock for 30 years it would be like $51,000,000 today after all the splits. But buying Apple stock in the 80s and hanging on to it for 30 years is the investing equivalent of buying a Hemi Cuda in the 70s for 3k. Nobody had any idea Apple would take off and nobody knew Hemi Cudas would be so expensive
>>
>>16868914
Then what's the point of this thread? 13k was "a lot of money" back then for an old car.
>>
My dad bought John A. Davidson's 1982 FXRS prototype for $12,000.00 back in 1985 or 1986. I declined an offer for $125,000.00 for it back in 2003.

I've heard lots of good classic Ferrari sob stories from customers, one old timer bought a 68 GTC for 5k in Italy when he was in the military in the early 70s, brought it back, ended up needing top end work, sold it for 7k thinking he was a genius for actually making a profit on it, now they are ~800k for a nice example. You couldn't even sell a Dino for 5k in the 80s.

I was getting no spark in my '69 ElCo and after troubleshooting the coil, found that it was not getting 12V properly switched. Grounded and wired to battery, tried turning the car over, still no spark and the ignition coil puked its guts out, literally.

My truck is objectively one of the worst cars I've ever driven, yet I don't care because it makes me really happy and it looks good. It objectively is inferior to my Acura in every way but payload and towing capacity, yet I pick the truck to drive 3 times out of 4

I don't think you understand me. Neither side will convince the other that they are wrong. I know that by truck is not objectively very good, yet to me, and to most classic car enthusiasts, as long as it runs and can drive over 55mph it is perfectly practical.

Whether or not it is objectively better is irrelevant to us, for the same reason that they are subjectively better is irrelevant to you.

>I know I have outdated luxury cars; though, I maintain that they're as practical as any other car
He got proven wrong. He could haul as many parts as he wanted to and take as many road trips as he wanted to in a modern car. Yet, he could save money by driving one in the long run. His argument is that it is as practical when it ISNT. You choose to drive a classic because you like them. You make the choice despite the facts. I never disputed that. But the fact is that you could do everything you do in your classic and you could do it better. Practicality is objective not subjective.
>>
>>16880944
You keep trying to argue practical as an objective fact, and it simply isn't. A Honda 1st Gen insight is practical for someone who drives 60 miles one way to work in a city, but would be extremely impractical for a construction worker that needs to haul building materials.

I will repeat myself, your fallacy is that your making a subjective argument objective, and neither side has swayed each other's view because they are all opinions.

How exactly? He has a 5 speed manual swapped into the car and gets about 15-16 MPG, which is pretty standard for a 5L V8.

Parts are cheap and plentiful, so upkeep costs are not expensive unless you buy performance products. Car is incredibly easy to fix, since everything is mechanical, minor problems could be fixed on the side of the road.

How is this spending more money again?

The argument was that classic cars aren't or are practical, not if they cost more to run. The reason that is changing the argument is that too some people, cost doesn't matter. Practical is a subjective opinion.

Have you tried calling auto dismantles in the area? They usually provide decent deals.

If we go solely on safety and MPGs, I should sell all of my cars, buy a Civic, and rent a truck whenever I need to haul anything.

I may pay a little more in gas to drive my Imperial, but my insurance is nothing, I make no payments, and my maintenance costs over the last two years have been a battery at $120.

Okay so after browsing old cars for sale and stressing over whether the owners are being honest or not, I've decided to "make" (kit car) my own "classic" (subjective) car.

Does anyone here have experience with a Factory Five Mk4 roadster kit? Probably not, but I want to take my chances.

I am already 50% ready to seriously get the complete kit ~$20,000 and then build a down and dirty computer-free carbureted goodness.

Someone seriously talk me out of it.

Oh I was joking! You gave me a short reply so I shot you a short sarcastic one in return.

I know it's a world of pain; I'm not naive! I just think it will be worth it to have a car that I "built" on my own.

I was near orgasm when the computer I built by myself turned on for the first time. Imagine how great it would feel for a built car to rev up for the first time.

Anyways, I am also thinking about working on an old car instead as you suggest. Expect it to be a bit cheaper than building a brand new kit.

Sup /classic cars/. My uncle who lives next door to me has an 89 iroc z Camaro that runs and drives and shit, pretty sure it's got the 5.7 v8. Maybe it's the 5.0, either way it's the v8. I could get it from him for around 1k.

Here's the thing though, it's been sitting for 2 years.. How much of a money pit will this shit be? Will it be fun at all?
>>
>>16887956
>It runs and drives
>It's been sitting for 2 years
Classic cars work like this: take a budget, estimate exactly how much something is going to first, and a certain amount of time as well. Then double or triple it.

Cool car though
>>
>>16887967
i have literally no idea how much it will cost, i have no knowledge of classic cars or muscle cars. I'm a honda guy. my dad knows the engines and shit because he works on them pretty often though.

Lets say, do you have any idea how much regular maintenance would cost, assuming i did it myself?
>>
>>16887309
I paid $500 for mine, reason why I went with it was it had low miles (130k) and a vid of the truck running and driving so it was just added assurance. Every other motor I saw was upwards to $600-$850 with way more miles so it was the cheapest option local I could find

If you could get one for $250 and it wasn't sitting in the bottom of a lake then go for it.

What are your plans for it? Turbo or n/a?
>>
>>16887997
Domestic car parts are dirt cheap, unless you are buying performance. They are also pretty easy to wrench on, so you should be okay.

>>
>>16888168

>>
>>16887997
Well here's my worry. It's sat for the last two years, and by the fact that it's an 89 Camaro means it's tbi as well as you're in America.

This means it has had ethanol in the fuel lines for the last two years which might have damaged the fuel tank, could have gummed up the injectors and fuel lines, and the fuel filter will be trashed. None of those are impossible to fix, but kind of a pain in the ass.

Then you have to get a battery, do all the fluids and maybe check the rubber but probably not.

Nothing impossible, but ethanol is your big worry. It is about 10 to 15 percent of the fuel in everything sold in entice and it is gnarly shit when it sits for over 8 months

Ethanol I mean, sorry.

It's corn alcohol that decomposes in your fuel line and molds up. It is bad stuff.

Tpi/tbi is tuned port injection and throttle body injection, different types of fuel injection systems.

It could be, it depends on how much money you want to spend tbqhwy. It can be you just put new gas in it and it runs, or you will need to put a good amount of work in it. I can't really tell without looking at pictures or knowing the state the drivetrain is in.

I'm interested in this topic, I've got to buy a stand soon

Got 4 rusted body bolts off the Jeep today. Feels good, only a couple more and I can get the body lifted off and start on the brakes, frame, and get the exhaust stud drilled out of the engine. Trying to get this done before the baby arrives around July 17th.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited. Jeep is fun sometimes, goes pretty slow when everything's rusted.

Today's take.

Its the 1,000 pound one, the 750lb one looked sketchy as fuck.

If you need a crane I went with the 2 ton because the boom is longer
>>
>>16889735
Thanks holmes. I bought the 1 ton crane, i figured it was almost no different from the two ton desu.
>>
>>16889238
Best of luck. Truly
>>
>>16889753
They're both fine, I was afraid the 1 ton wasn't going to be long enough, with a 1/2 ton being the longest you could go on the 1 ton. Whereas the 2 ton the furthest hole is a 1/2 ton

Sanding for a textured paint?

Are you fucking high? Or stupid?
>>
>>16890879
No, sanding to remove the fucking 30 years of rust that had accumulated so the primer would actually adhere to something rather than dipping the fuck out as soon as it dried.

Gorgeous paint in that light.

What's the amber light on the rear pillar? Side marker? It's a bit of a pimple on an otherwise elegant body.

Yeah it's a Series 1 so it has the indicator on the pillar. Series 2 has the indicator on the tail light as well as disc brakes and wider tires. The tailights look very MGBish

Sup. It's me from the other day, whos uncle has the camaro and was asking for spoonfeeding. So apparently it definitely runs, but it needs a battery. It's also got 80 (eighty) thousand miles on the fucking thing.

I'm all of a sudden not sure I can jew the guy to a thousand dollars.
>>
>>16893655
If you can swing him for a low price do it. Did you see it run?
>>
>>16893637
Had some "merc rot" also, this one is because of bad accident damage (fender-bender with some headlamp housing damage) in 90's.

>>
>>16893665
I didn't see it personally but I've heard testimony from 4 different family members that it definitely ran, and just needs a battery.

Id offer him max 2k, but at that point if I decided to not just keep it I doubt I'd make any profit.
>>
>>16893671
Also meant bad accident repair
>>
>>16893684
You might be able to, depending on how good of a salesman you are.

Did they say it ran now, or ran two years ago?
>>
>>16893684
(Same guy) checked cars for sale and saw lower mileage ones for like 15k, but I bet those are also immaculate lol
>>
>>16893692
Ran about a year ago, and they drove it down the road.
>>
>>16893684
>just needs a battery
Oldest trick in the book.
>it only needs a 20 dollar part, no time or money to install it, but I promise it's good! My loss is your gain! SOLD AS IS BRING A TRAILER

Also
>profit.
You're NEVER going to make a profit on a project like that, wrong reason to get into a project car
>>
>>16893710
Yeah bro it'll only take maybe $100 to fix

>spun 3 bearings
>>
>>16893710
Kek, this is all true.

Maybe I'll keep it for another 10 years and finally sell it for profit or something.
>>
>>16893737
How about you just keep it, fix it up, and drive it?
Unless you own a full blown restoration shop you won't make money on this.
>>
>>16893749
Because I really doubt I can insure an old camaro? I might have no tickets or accidents but this im in florida lol
>>
>>16893778
I would really like to daily drive it honestly, it has a back seat and a big trunk so it's not very inconvenient, but the insurance mane

>>

>>
>>16885406
Fuck. May just buy a whole car. That always seems to happen
>>
>>16883763
Thanks. $1,200.

Needs a carb rebuild and paint. 50,000 miles and the interior is perfect. Cent descide if i wanna fuck with a wrap around seat or judt flip the middle one backwards. Hell, may just leave it alone. Trying to figure out how to waterproof a projector that flips up from under the bumper or hood.

Cant figure out wtf to paint it... interior is blue so probably some shade of that with a white vynil top.

Kek. Ty sir. Geting vanity plate if i can for an antique. Is a burger joint like 20 miles down a dirt road. Been in 48 states and the best burger i ever had. Called Jim's. Might get the plate to read TO JIMS or something amd abduct frieds every weekend.

Its a lot of fun.

MSD 8352 distributor with an MSD blaster 2 coil. He's trying some cheap & generic electric fuel pump first, if it doesn't get along with his carb he'll track down something else, wants to try it out first.
