Why aren't you DDing a Volt, /o/?
>>
because i'm not a grandparent faggot
>>
Because my daily commute is 105 miles and I'm pretty sure the battery won't last that long while I cruise at 80 on the freeway.
>>
>>16866075
You will still get 50 MPG from the generator.
>>
>>16866088
I'm sure it's a fine car for putting around town in, but I don't think it would work out on the freeway with a 75mph speed limit.
>>
because V8 luxobarge
>>
It would be my economy car of choice if I wasn't poor as shit

>>16866121

It's a hybrid anon, it's top speed is 100MPH, no one has had an issue with using them on the highway

Even if it were pure electric I'm not sure where you got the notion that it has a low top speed, a Model S does like 150
>>
>>16866152
I thought the Volt was the all-electric?
>>
>>16866018
Because I DD your mom
>>
I don't buy cars the CIA can control
>>
>>16866018
I'd buy one as a toy, I like the idea of genset run vehicles, muh efficiency. But they really didn't need to put all the CIA electronics in it...
>>
>>16866075

The EPA rates the Volt for 38 miles of electric range, but let's say 35 miles just to be conservative. That would leave you 70 more miles with the engine running. The EPA rates the Volt at 40 mpg highway, but let's say 35 just to be conservative. This means you will burn 2 gallons of gas for your remaining 70 mile trip. If we combine this with the electric range from the first 35 miles, this gives us a total of 52.5 mpg.
>>
>>16866121

It's top speed is 101 mph in both electric mode and hybrid mode.
>>
>>16866159

The Bolt is all-electric. The Volt is a plug-in hybrid.
>>
>>16866018

Eventually, most people will have a Volt-like car. They're fucking cheap now because of the rebates, but I'd like to pick up a 2nd gen later on because the first gen's interior was trash.

Then don't buy new cars because a guy in his Mercedes had his car hacked and sped up without him wanting so and he crashed and died after supposedly uncovering "secretive" information.

Don't buy "Smart" TVs either since those too can be hacked and your conversations recorded without your knowing so. this isn't me being a conspiracy nut this shit-(smart TV hacking)-was just talked about on the national news a week or so ago.

Drivetrain is electric only. But there is a 3 cyl 900cc generator.
>>

>>
>>16866331

It's electronically limited.
>>

The wheels are driven on electric power only, with the engine providing charge for the battery under most circumstances. Occasionally the engine will "assist" the electric motor if the software deems it is more efficient.

The engine has 4 cylinders and 1.4 liters (1,400 ccs) of displacement.
>>
>>16866361
The battery packs are stupidly reliable, there's a shop in Canada making an electric Evora using a Tesla Model S motor with Volt battery packs
>>

That's irrelevant though. There's literally no reason to be an early adopter when the technology is clearly immature. I'm not a luddite, I'll just wait for the EVs to actually become the majority before I buy one. Buying a Volt because some day we'll have good EVs is retarded.
>>
>>16867240

I get the electric range of an electric car, without having to be tied to long charge times and hard to find charging stations for longer trips.

I would much rather take the hit in electric range if it means being able to go further than a Nissan Leaf, for example. Thanks to the hybrid design, my Volt is a much more usable car.

My car has had a lifetime mpg of 124 since it was new. It had around 70% oil life when I got it. I've driven it for 21,000 miles and haven't changed the oil yet. It still has 25% oil life left.

Just more reason to not buy one :^)
Also what makes you think it will be much better than other batteries? It's not like it packs some revolutionary battery tech.
Buying used is dumb when it comes to EVs, they're made for being leased. Sadly it's also the case for most modern ICE powered cars. Even the luxury ones. Back in the day a Benz was made to last a lifetime, now they start falling apart after 5 years. Leasing is also why they lost so much prestige, when you had to pay them in full in order to get them only the truly wealthy could afford them.
>>
>>16867245
>>16867379
actually the Volt only lets you use 10kWh of battery. So you lose 6 kWh of capacity with out actually harming range. Which will take well over a decade.

Objectively it was a horrible interior--their interior lead to more errors and longer distraction times, and capacitive touch buttons were primarily the culprit.

Capacitive touch buttons are not a good idea because they dont have any feedback inherent in the button, like a physical button would (you can feel the button clearly depress). So often in the Volt the only way to know if you pressed it was by looking at the screen to see the feedback presented there.

The mapping of the buttons were also a mess. They kinda just threw them everywhere, where they think they made sense.

There's a reason they heavily updated it in the 2nd generation. Capacitive buttons are not a good idea when your users are going to be driving.

Source: Literally work in the UX car industry.
>>
>>16878444
Youre comparing it to a full electric car. The Volt does 40 miles on electric then it turns into a regular prius and can do i think 300miles on gas.

>And no, it's not subjective. It's fucking ugly.

>>
>>16878512
Valuable post right here. I hate the capacitive button trend. Looks like most buttons are still capacitive even with the new interior though.
Touchscreens in cars suck too, and so do glossy screens.
>>
>>16878512

I don't find the capacitive buttons that big of a deal, simply because I hardly need to use them. Radio controls are on the steering wheel, and automatic climate control is standard. I just press "auto" and never have to worry about it again, even when I get back in the car the next time. Overall, the interior feels well laid out and exudes a sense of completeness, like the designers knew exactly what they were doing.

The Volt is most efficient when the engine is never used. The more it is used, the lower the average mpg. A 38 mile drive will yield infinite mpg. A 75 mile drive will yield 75 mpg. A 112 mile drive will yield 56 mpg.
>>
>>16877183
Little over two years ago, only had 16 thousand on it. I got it from a relative who didn't want it so I only paid 20k. I could take some pictures, I probably will later. It's red so it has 20 more horsepower than the stock version.

>>16878444
It's a shitty car if you plan on frequently going over the 40 mile range (which is what the battery charge actually is, I don't know what they advertise)
It'll also drop, sometimes down to 30, when it gets cold, so if you live in the northeast give up now. That was partially why it was sold to me.

>>16878512
This is entirely correct, fuck console, fuck the touchscreen, it was made by literal monkeys and is the worst part of the car by far. Everything that actually matters is comfy though.

The car it's mostly often compared to is the Prius, and in my opinion, it absolutely shits on it. It definitely didn't at launch, it cost something ridiculous like 35k, but now it's a million times better. Driving a Prius feels like driving a large potato with wheels stuck on it that periodically forgets it has an engine inside. The Volt isn't that much better if you want to go fast, but it's actually fairly sporty. You can look at the top speed of a little over a hundred and cringe (I've hit it, it gets pretty bad after 85mph) but that really isn't what electric motors do best. You can put your foot down and get shitloads of torque pretty much instantly, so for anything under 70 mph it's actually significantly better than most cars. If you get a good deal on one it's worth buying, I haven't had any problems with it, and electricity is cheap as shit where I am so the S A V I N G S are pretty good. If 70% of your trips are within the 40 mile range, it's a great car, if they're not, you should probably look elsewhere.

Congrats, you're the first Volt owner ITT to actually give good advice unlike the faggot pretending it's perfect.

>It's a shitty car if you plan on frequently going over the 40 mile range

I disagree. Taking a 75 mile trip in it will yield 75 mpg, which is more efficient
than any other gas burning car, except the new Prius Prime, where it is about equal.
>>

That's a good price. What year is it?
>>

Yes it does.
>>

You can get a new one for less than 20k.

Stolen from a comment on an article posted above:
>This article states $40,000 as a Volt price ... not mentioning that this is a sticker price when the owner bought the car is not right. The Volt price has been reduced since then to $33,220 .. minus $7500 (FED incentive)... minus any state incentives (I got $3500 state incentive) ... minus dealer discount (I got $1500)... minus GM card credits up to $3500....minus GM incentives that vary during the year .. I got $1500.
>I've talked to people who bought their Volt for well under $20K.

If you pretend that the battery doesn't exist, yes. If you want to do cost comparison, include how many kW you're using as well.

You're "burning" both gas and electricity, there are two fuels being consumed. If you completely ignore one of them, like you are, then yes, it puts out very impressive numbers.

I would, but I don't have any storebought bread.
You just put the shit in the breadmachine and it makes bread, I dunno m8s.

Anyway, it would be a literal piece of bread on the hood, and I need that for food

But I did really want to put a piece of bread on my hood, I've never had occasion to post a picture of my car on /o/ before so I felt like it was a piece of the culture I was missing out on.

I'm legitimately disappointed to the point where I considered buying some wonderbread just to put on the hood.

I guess this is the power of memes.

Charging the battery doesn't affect my bill because I have solar panels. This isn't a typical situation, but it's one that's growing.

>Gas engine has no connection to drivetrain
>Somehow expects something other than "automatic" (it's probably more of a direct drive but semantics)
>>
>>16886471

I don't notice any whine. It's mostly tire and wind noise at high speed. It also feels very stable at 101 mph. I feel like I could comfortably travel at that speed all day. I wonder how many kw it takes to cruise at top speed. If it's less than 50 kw, the engine should have no problem keeping up with the power demand. It would be a fun experiment.
>>
>>16887784

I think it is direct drive. While moving forward and up to a certain speed, the car can be brought to a stop by shifting into reverse, and vice versa, GTA style.

Also, the engine does make a mechanical connection to the electric motor under certain conditions.
>>
>>16887784
What's stopping you from putting a manual transmission with a conventional clutch on the backside of the electric motor?

Also, the tail lights. I really wish they would have spanned the entire width of the lenses like this in the production version.

Is there a name for this specific concept car? It's hard to find images of it. Most results that come up when I search "Chevy volt concept" are of the first one.
>>
>>16891302

Here is the production version for comparison. The unlighted sections are reflectors. What do you guys think? Sorry for the small picture. It's strangely hard to find a photo of the Volt with it's tail lights on.

You either never actually hit 100 or your head is so far up your ass it's affecting your hearing.

The tires are noisy, sure, but not uncomfortably so. There's some videos on YouTube showing how quiet traveling at high speed is in the Volt.
