My brother goes as far as to simply remove all but the driver's seat in his cars - He actually pissed off a homeless guy once who tried to hit him up for a ride. "I only have one seat!" Homeless guy didn't believe him, walked up to the car, and chewed him out for literally having only one seat.

What about in automatic cars? I know a guy with an automatic late 80s transam and he claims he goes drives in (D) overdrive and downshifts to D when he wants to go faster to pass someone. Does this work or is he just lying? The guys a compulsive liar who claims he was in a 140mph street race against a r8 when the cops busted them but let him go because the other guy had heroine in his car.

What about old muscle cars with 3 speed autos? Does down shifting an automatic from D to 2 do anything?

He can do that if he want's. With the auto that'll take it down from OverDrive to Drive and increase the RPM to something over 2000. That'll give it a little more initial acceleration capability rather than waiting for it to downshift on its own.

Now if he digs in deep enough the trans is going to downshift on it's own to 2nd in either the OD or D manual lever position which then makes the original downshift pointless.

As far as older 3 speeds are concerned they'll go down to 2nd on their own with enough throttle just like the OD trans would though with those they usually have enough rpm at cruise already and going to 2nd early would feel harsh until you actually started your run.
