The Toyota Supra will share a platform with the BMW Z5, which appears to be heading in a different design direction. Both rear-wheel-drive vehicles will be produced by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.

Powertrain options for the Toyota Supra remain unknown. It could source turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines from BMW, or it could use Toyota’s new twin-turbo V-6. A hybrid version could arrive later down the line.

Blame government regulations

With all the crossovers and pickups cars need higher doors and wider pillers. At least it's not mustang level
>>
>>16863615
There are no regulations requiring this-and-that wide pillars or higher doors. Car makers simply don't wanna put enough R&D time into making thin pillar/low door cars that also perform well in crash tests.
>>
>>16863645
How, if they add doors that are heavier and structurally stronger you guys complain it's pig fat. If they use some crazy lightweight material that's strong you guys complain about the price and nobody buys it.

This. It's like they don't know that there are dedicated teams that work exclusively on making camouflage and body panels to confuse gullible retards.
>>
>>16863654
R&D stands for "research and development". Obviously designing cars that look aesthetically pleasing and still are safe to crash in is going to require a lot of R&D. It's not like I have the concrete answers and design proposals.
I'm just saying that it's not government regulations, but manufacturers' (and customers') wishes for safe AND affordable cars that results in the thick-pillared, high-windowed econobox designs around today.

Had a 944, realized pretty quickly that those back seats are useless, looking up a coupe with actual legroom for my next car. Seeing as the GT86 has literally no leg room in the back, why did Toyota think it was a good idea to not make it a bigger coupe? Surely they could have pandered BMW for some 2 series chassis to basterdize, we already have a hardtop Miata, save it for the MR2 Toyota.

>>16866499
The NSX starts at $156,000 and it's a pretty obvious target for Toyota to aim at. It's also kind of a sitting duck because it's expensive, not incredibly fast, and nearly every critic has commented on what a bland driving experience it offers. If Toyota can offer similar or better performance with the same level of technical sophistication for $30,000+ less and at least a nod toward driver involvement, they're bound to get boatloads of great press from "Japanese Supercar Shootout!" articles.

>>
>>16866471
That car would be DROPPED just like the NSX already is.
>>
As an FR car, I really don't think they're going to be targeting something like the NSX. I figure that it'll be more a car that's meant to chase Corvettes, M4's, GT350R's, C63, you get the gist.

Yeah, that whole "ultra high performance" category starts bleeding into the "super car" range in terms of spec sheets (horsepower, 0-60 times, lap times, etc.) but doesn't quite get there because the tech either isn't extreme enough and/or the cars themselves are not exclusive/exotic enough.

I"m going to guess we're starting around 35. They're going to offer a range of engines and trims on this, but none of them are going to cannibalize the GT-86.

Personal prediction?

Base model - Non-turbo I6 - 32.5-35k - Options include a manual and a basic A6 with flappy paddles. One or two factory wheel options, cloth interior etc. RWD only. 300hp.

"RS" model or whatever - 38-40kTurbo I4, RWD only. Manual and Automatic choices. Like high-strung grenade Turbo I4. 240-270hp range. TRD goodies kick in here, factory tuning or a "pro" package for a serious boost in power etc. Some nicer interior amenities.

"GT" package - 50k range - Turbo V6 - RWD only, automatic only - 7 speed tiptronic etc. Leather etc.

GT Sport Plus - 58k+ Turbo V6 AWD Hybrid drivetrain - regen braking, electric front wheel assist, passively "AWD" - Much like the G37S it only engages when slip is detected. Automatic only, same as GT.

education time senpai:

Before we even get into outputs, which isn't even relevant considering you're talking about highly modified cars with built motors that won't last 30k at that level of boost or ever not make you cringe about your piston rings everytime you cold start

>one cylinder head
>half the cams
>easier to balance rotating assembly
>easier to cool, more coolant can be kept outside of the block
>easier to oil, inline six oil pans are more ergonomic and fit to the subframe in general
>smaller footprint
>less vibration inherently before balancing

they're just expensive to produce since the block and head are milled out of larger castings
