LS430 is obviously the better vehicle, more reliable than the LS400, LS430s aren't known to have really any issues, it's the most reliable Lexus ever built.

The LS400 is 10/10 too and you can find them at a lower price, try looking for a LS400 98-00 to get middle ground. They are the fastest from the LS400s and LS430s and come with options that are considered modern. Of course they are not as common but if you can find them then get them unless you find a much better deal with the LS430.

The LS430 is kind of just a bigger, facelifted 98-00 LS400. It adds nicer features like parking sensors, DVD navigation, voice controls for the navigation, rain sensing wipers, more room in general compared to the more compact LS400 (all gens).

The LS430s are a little less troublesome. The suspension tends to be a little less prone to wear and tear especially the air suspension which is utter shit on the LS400s and you should stay away from those unless you want to spend a lot to switch to OEM coils and shocks.

However the 98-00 LS400s are a lot cheaper. They have identical power to the 3UZ as well for whatever reason.

Don't try to VIP slam it, far too many have gone to the shitter because of this.

Both will have issues with stuff like power steering.

Another thing, some trim pieces in the LS400 are almost guaranteed to break. With heat cycling and time some of the displays are guaranteed to break. My clock displays nonsense now. I have a few dead segments on the radio but it's still readable.

The trunk/fuel door switches are almost guaranteed to break the plastic as well. The metal tab will still be there so it works, but it's ugly.

LS430

Much higher level of content. The extra power is welcome. Very easy to still find 1 and 2 owner cars that had been well maintained and have relatively low mileage. LS400's tend to have a higher likelihood of a hoodrat owning it at some point. 430 gets neat things like parking sensors, radar cruise control, adaptive lighting, and power rear sunshade. Nothing wrong with a clean 400 though if you can find one without 8 billion miles on them.

I got mine in late 2016 with 53k miles on it for under $16k. One owner, and absolutely mint except for swirled paint and a few small leather perforations. Bonus is that it smells like a humidor since the PO was into expensive cigars.

Fucking retarded. The 90-94 will still leave you stranded on a broken t belt. So just budget and plan for replacement. It won't break unless you had a dumbs shit sloppy shop install it wrong, used shitty non-OEM water pump or belt, or you went 100k past recommended service interval.

You realize that the 1UZ-FE VVTi is basically identical to the 3UZ-FE right? The differences basically come down to more displacement, a new exhaust manifold, and some other small things. The transmission is mechanically identical from the 98-00 LS400 to the early LS430. It was not until the mid cycle refresh that the LS430 got a 6th gear.

The early model LS430s are not really a huge improvement over the late 98-00 LS400. It's only with the late model LS430 that you really see the noticeable jump.

Toyota outdid themselves with the LS400, especially towards the end of its run. What the LS430 focused on was taking the LS400 and polishing the shit out of it. If you can afford a late model LS430 I would absolutely get that, but if your choice is between a beat up LS430 and a clean LS400 I would take the LS400 first.

If you want to deal with the bullshit that is the EGR, secondary air injection, and other issues of early model LS400s be my guest. The 98-00 LS400s are mechanically much simpler. Just don't fuck up the timing belt because the compression is high and the VVT means that mistimed belts and snapped belts can cause valves to collide with pistons.

The point is that if you get a 98-00 LS400 you really won't be missing much in terms of engine or transmission on the early LS430. The late model LS430 is when they updated the transmission in a noticeable manner.

Even then, the engine is not that different. You get 0.3L more displacement and not much else. Power is similar, you actually get more VVTi advance out of the 1UZ so at low RPM the torque ends up fairly comparable.

What's actually different? It's a little smoother. The big changes from a 2000 LS400 to a 2001 LS430 are mostly design (much more aerodynamic), emissions, and features. The interior is a nicer place to be with less plastic. You get parking sensors and stuff like that.

Is it worth paying 10k more? Maybe. If you have to spend 10k on the car would I get a super clean 2000 LS400 or a kind of shitty LS430? Definitely the LS400.
