Right now, which year is the cut-off for being classic?
>>
>>16842601
I'd call it '79 and back, unless it's a specific body style that continued past then and didn't change significantly.

Like one guy has a '79 C10. Another guy posts his '83 C10. It's all good.

However, just because a 280Z is all fine and dandy doesn't mean a shitty 280ZX is okay. Sure, it's a classic by law, but it doesn't fit the theme around here.
>>
Because i didn't get a chance to respond before 404.

A 225 can take boost fine for a long time.

No one will stop you. The legal definition of a classic had a rolling 25 year cutoff, but usually a classic needs something special. While an 85 beat to shit Civic isn't considered a classic, a 1987 Monte Carlo ss in mint condition would be
>>
>>16843509
Fieros are classics, in some regards; for example, my '84 Indy is a classic due to its remarkable original condition and low production numbers.

I'd consider Fieros to be classics, overall, as well due to how radically different they are from modern offerings.

>Down the road I definitely want a 351. Night b the motor after this one. This one is just my first engine swap on one of my own vehicles, and the first one I build
You might as well do the 351 now. There is absolutely no reason not to unless you want to flush your cash down the toilet.
>>
>>16844705
The cheapest way to over 300 horsepower is this way, 351w parts are more expensive and not add plentiful used around here.

This doesn't need to be a monster motor, and the 302 will be pretty easy to put all the parts on.

Another benefit is I can sell GT40 intakes to recoup some cash.

/ccg/, I need input. Ford in their infinite wisdom have plced a Torx headed bolt underneath the intake plenum, tucked into the ass end of "nearly unreachable" at the crossroads of "there is no vertical space." I've already dropped two T40 screwdriver bits into the dead zone and do not want to lose the last one I have. For reference, it's on an 89 Bronco, 5.0. Ideas for not losing the third and last T40 bit would be appreciated. I've got maybe an inch and a half of vertical clearance. Not quite enough to get ratchet in there.
>>
>>16847109
a 1/4" t40 bit in the end of a 1/4 wrench maybe?

>>
>>16847135
That's pretty much the plan at this point, actually. I had to hit up the auto parts store to get another bit since recovering the other 2 isn't possible right now. It came in a little set that has a 1/4" adapter and it might work. Might being the operative word. The next step if that fails is to try to get a hand wrench around the bit like I was doing before.

How do you guys feel about base-model Novas? I really like a '77 I see on CL and I've actually projected a lot of sentimental value to that particular kind of car.

1977 is an important year for me for reasons, and I really kind of like how base-models of cars like the Nova (especially of that particular vintage) are the bastard-children of classic cars.

The one I see has the 305 and automatic trans, perfect for cruising in my opinion.

What do you guys think?

Some of us dont even have exhaust and idle through town. The wifes car is the only one with a catalytic converter and without dual exhaust. We have several cars.

>be me
>buy limo
>cuss and fight and fire it up
>put tag and insurance on it
>get help pushing from stucl spot and limp out of the junkyard
>idle a tank of gas out
>drive 3 blocks and fry the back tire off.
>change it 2 more times on the way home.

What a fucking job it is to install an intake, don't want to do that any time soon. One of the 12 bolts had shit in the hole and wouldn't bottom out and I wasn't take it back off for one hole.

So I cut a couple threads off it and plopped it back in. Fuck it.

Also picked up this aftermarket alternator bracket that bolts to the intake (front left in pic), supposedly swings the alternator up and eliminates a heavy ugly bracket.

We'll see how that works out.

Yup, I figured .030 was the number but he suggested we take .040 just in case and I trust him so I said go for it. Glad we did too because I had to press down on the intake to cleanly get a couple to thread in so it was tight.

Time to plumb up this cock sucker

Sounds about right, you could probably make a bit parting it out, or would be fun to gut the drivetrain and put something else in it if you have the fabrication skills

>>16858789
While that's not much money it's still not a deal for that car, if your objective was to restore it and run it stock the car is worth about negative $15k in that condition, seeing as the cost of restoring it would be so much greater than the value of a restored example

Craigslist; the car has no title, but everything is there. I'm going to swap in a 350 or a 454.

Sorta relevant to thread, what does a typical shop charge for a rebuild of a classic V8?
Have a Chrysler 400 in my rust box that im considering rebuilding and was curious of a ballpark figure since most there's not many shops near me who will do it.
I would do it myself but i dont have the knowledge or facility to do a rebuild.

Depends on what you want to do to it and what it needs. Otherwise too many variables to answer.

Assuming you just a stock rebuild on a worn out motor maybe with a mild cam and you brought it to a local machinist. I would say anywhere from $1500 to $3000.
>>
>>16858918
Basically i want some cam but not to the point where the engine is going to stall at red lights. Its going to be a drivers car, daily driver possibly.
The 400, while a decent engine once all the emissions shit is stripped off, is no race engine. However it is a big block so i dont want it to be a total pig either.

Right, so mild lift cam which I'm sure there's plenty of options out there. I don't know much about Chrysler desu but it's pretty generic info for any of the major brands.

I didn't have that much experience either when I started this project a while ago so I had my machinist put a short block together for me but I did a lot of extra machine work done on the heads so I could use a higher lift cam and have the correct rocker geometry.

Honestly if you want to do it, I'd suggest getting them to put a short block together for you. That's the critical tolerance work of the rebuild, past that it's just bolting on parts and making things work. That's what I did. And now I'm here >>16858196

Forgot to mention shortblock is usually bottom end assembled, crank, pistons, cam and timing set.
>>
>>16858968
Problem is i dont own a garage otherwise i would pull the engine, hot tank the short block, have it machined, and rebuild it myself.

Ah gotcha. Honestly if the motor is worn out enough that you're getting pretty decent blowby or whatever, it'd be cheaper to just swap in another lower mileage motor but if you want to keep the original block, rebuilding ain't too cheap.
>>
>>16858938
Don't those get stroked out to 451's now?

And you're going to need pistons, and a crank anyway so might as well throw some new rods in there and make it a stroker kit anyway

>>
>>16858938
>where the engine is going to stall at red lights.
That's a problem with the carburetor you put on it.

people frequently drill out the idle bypass holes in thermoquads to let more idle air through when they put on a big cam.

anyway it's a Detroit pushrod V8, nothing complicated if you ever decided to do it yourself.
