It should have been a plug-in series hybrid. Battery technology wasn't anywhere close to good enough to make a pure BEV commercially viable. It would have beaten both the Prius and the Insight to the market by two years, and given GM the lead in hybrid technology, instead of having to play catch-up with the Volt.
