Recently I got a promotion and I will be getting a salary of an equivalent of about 50K USD. Mind you that I am leaving in Eastern Europe.
Is buying pic related stupid? Will it ruin me financially? Up until now I had my dad's Peugeot 406 1.9 Diesel and I did 15K Kilometres on it, so I am not a total newbie driver.
I am not concerned about MPG, rather about maintenance. I am interested in 1.8, 2.0 Petrol engines. If I could get a car for about 4K USD what else would you recommend? I don't wanna another french shitbox. Thanks in advance. BMW bros most welcome.

Cause one of the things you might want in a car is for the engine to start when you turn the key?
I have one OP
Best car I ever bought. I make $14/hr and can keep up the car easily. Has a few things that needed fixing, but they were small and easily DIY.
Making $50k you have nothing to worry about. I would buy a later year as other anons have suggested, (mine is 2004). The pre-facelift years have subframe issues.
That being said, you should thoroughly inspect the car before buying it to avoid the last owners problems.

Btw, the car you posted is the pre-facelift version.
