37 MTRs to 42 Pitbull Rockers?

Torn between 38.5x14.50 TSL SX and 42x15 TSL SX II.
42s obviously have a size advantage and deeper tread, but require another gear swap and a lot more trimming.

More tire is better then less with a long ass suburban. The 37" MTR military tires to 41.5" PitBull rocker radials. You definitely need more engine to spin those suckers in the mud... Ha

See attached pic for all the trimming I did with ~5" of lift and 41.5" pitbulls.

Should be a better pic of the trimmed fenders with the larger tires...
>>
>>16824344
Remember trimming is free, also gear more then you think you should with the bigger tire. I had 5.13s with 37s, worked very well, but with the 41.5s that gearing wasn't quite enough. But with the 14 bolt rear the lowest you can go is 5.38s. Which still would have been better, with the 41.5s. If you have a Dana 70 HD rear like I have now, that'll go under my K5, then you can gear a whole lot lower, like 6.17 or 7.17 low, but make sure you have an overdrive transmission with that low of gearing.
>>
>>16824386
Engine is going to be an intercooled 6.5 diesel with an HX35 regardless.
Might eventually do 5.13s if I go with 38.5s but 4.88 should be plenty for now. Would definitely want 5.38s if I go to 42s.

I wish Interco would just make a 40x14.50R16.5 TSL SXII

>I have five Hella 4000s for the roof too
>>
>>16824406
I totally agree, if they made a 40" SX tire I'd buy a set this minute for my K5 build. I'd also like to see PitBull make the rocker radial, or bias tire in a true 40" tire for 16.5" wheels, cuz double bead lock wheels are the shit. I have a set of 24bolt H1 wheels for the K5 as well. Probably gonna end up with the 38x12.50 SXs for it then decide if I want to run 5.13s or jump up to 6.17s, fuck the highway mileage... LOL
>>
>>16824424
40" would require trimming but I know it's doable at my lift height without taking out too much. It's more tire than the 38.5s, but still great for a 5.13 - 5.38 range.

The 42s would require a lot of trimming and I'm stuck with 5.38s still being geared a little higher than I'd like.

I'll probably end up sticking with the 38.5s. Oh well.
>>
>>16824452
With the diesel wouldn't the 5.13/5.38s with the 42s work out great? I thought they liked lower cruising rpm on the highway? I had the 5.7 TBI motor.
>>
>>16824452
4lo.com has a gear calculator, punch in the tire height, and all the other info and it'll tell you the true MPH or RPM at a certain speed. Really nice for doing quick figuring of gears and tires.
>>
>>16824459
The 6.5 not as much as most diesels. The 5.38 would probably be fine but I'd prefer the extra power over 1-2 mpg on the highway.
>>
>>16824472
I prefer the Grimmjeeper calculator.

http://grimmjeeper.com/gears.html
>>
>>16824494
Well lets put it this way, with the 37" military MTRs, 5.13s in the 1 ton axles, and 5.7 TBI I got 14.5 MPG on a 150 mile trip to Altoona. With the 41.5" PitBull rockers, 5.13s and the 5.7 I got 12.5 MPG on the same 150 mile route. Most of that was on the PA turnpike.
>>
>>16824824
That's all GPS verified mileage, not the odometer miles, which were off with the taller tires and lower gears. Also filled up the suburban at the same gas station, Sheetz, in both York before I left and Altoona when I arrived.

Alright /org/, do you think I should get 31s on my truck? I'm running 30s right now (stock size) and I think 31 is the biggest I can do before I'd have to do some serious grinding and folding away of some pinch welds and plastic bits

I'll probably go with Cooper ATPs since they're aggressive enough for sand but still Highway-friendly. If anyone has any suggestions let me know, though:

Plenty, enough for me to wish that I should get some rock sliders, I don't back down, mostly because I can't turn around, and it shows in the body damage I get. granted that the suburban is bretty good, especially in the overlanding aspect, but it's not a trumps all truck like you guys are trying to selling it to be.
>>
>>16824424
>roburrito slap
are you in 717?
>>
>>16825101
So you just deal with the little bit of body damage and get through it? Same concept in a Suburban.

It doesn't Trump all in that it's better than everything at everything. Your 4Runner being longer than a sammy doesn't mean that the sammy is better because it can do trails you can't, it just means you have to take a little more caution in a few spots to minimize body damage.

For any ONE thing you want to do, you can find a vehicle that does it better than a Suburban. But most people don't have the money or storage for fifteen vehicles so they want one that will do all of it well. The Suburban's ability to do so many things well is what makes it good. The price point is what makes it great.

Very true and good points, but I still got to refute and say that the suburban it's too long which limits what trails you can go on, if I had to go chevy, a k5 blazer would be on top of my list, same as a suburban, but shorter.

What's a fair price for this thing considering he hasn't moved it for a month? 3 inch lift with 33 inch KO2s and lockers in her is worth at least $3000 in aftermarket parts. I would've done that myself too anyway...

honestly his price isnt that far off considering the current market if 'minimal rust' is actually accurate.
if hg has been done i'd have no problem giving him his asking price (probably would offer $7-7.5k) if not id use that as a bargaining tool and open with $4.5-5k since that is a complicated service.

250k sounds like high mileage but i wouldnt blink about purchasing an 80 with more than that assuming it has been taken care of.

I had Destination A/Ts before I got the goodyear wrangler authority A/Ts from walmart, and I didn't like the traction in the wet, especially compared to my goodyears. It was a good quiet tire though, it did ok offroad but with my open diff i found myself spinning on gravel often. The goodyears were about $20 more per tire, but I did go from a 245/70 to a 265/75 so that may have been a lot of the cost. Overall I love my goodyears, great traction on everything I've driven on so far, including red clay, snow and ice. Road noise is quieter than I expected for the tread depth, which is like 21/32" iirc. They clean mud out quickly too, which is nice.

mine has the 4.5 1fz-fe in it. same one all 93-97s have. as for my gear/locker problems, i had a driveline whine that i couldnt diagnose so when i took it in, he found pic related. since i needed a new gear anyway i decided to completely regear the truck and put a spartan autolocker in the rear.

lol no not my truck. i have the blue one :-)
the 1FZ is fairly easy to rebuild as far as rebuilds go. theres a shit ton of space in the engine bay...relatively small engine in a big truck.
also fyi the lx450 (lexus 80 series) and regular toyota land cruiser 80 series are exactly identical except for side body cladding, a little bit of additional interior sound deadening, slightly different wheels on the lx. everything else is the exact same with the same parts.
down here the toyota 80 series usually goes for slightly more which is kind of weird im guessing bc hipsters love the 'heritage' but idk

Dude salt spray is horrible for your vehicle due to your mentioned salt but also due to the huge humidity and warm climate. Acts as a really large catalyst for rust.
60s would have rust issue but I where I'm looking, it could be north enough that it won't matter too much (like the one in Manitoba I found for $2500). And I'm willing to head up to Nunavut to fetch a good quality FJ80, 60, or 40.

>>16827040
>>16827083
Holy shit dude how the fuck did that happen. Chinese steel? ;^(

Anyway, I am familiar with some of the engine bay sizes and wouldn't mind trying to shove turbo UZ or so in it (especially considering mileage). If anything, getting V8 sounds in it would be worth its price already and those extra ft lb of torque would be really helpful in terms of towing random shit.

Also yeah - do you have a dedicated fab for this yet? There's no reason your rear and front bumper should cost a total of $5000. I should've just drove that $2500 land cruiser to Virginia and parted it out to you for $6000 instead.

Also that's good information. Lexus isn't worth that much over the LCs if you can help it, eh? I mean, if you want, literally just toss a Tay Yoda badge on it or something.

...speaking of which, my mazda badge for Taynger came in the mail today so I'm gonna put that on the front grill soon.

lol it was oem toyota steel unfortunately.
im thinking some debri got inside and tore it up. pic related are the shards that came out.

1uz swap is actually fairly common with 80s. if i was going to do one that would be at the top of the list. its (relatively) easy as well but not super cheap unfortunately if you do it right.

and in all fairness for those armor prices they were on the higher end. realistically youre looking at $1k front bumper and $2.5k rear bumper - you could spend all of $5k though if you wanted. as for fabbing, you are looking at similar (usually more) unless you go full tube which im not willing to do.

but yeah, theyre exactly identical, if you had two of them sitting in front of me in the same condition i would just buy the cheaper one.
once you get to the 100 series though there are some actual differences but that is a whole other ball game.

and i am so jelly you get to off road for your job.

Yeah looking into the modern GXs and how they could be worth it. They're still the most reliable and simple "luxury" vehicles on the market even past 2012 and onwards into current year. I think they run on modern UZs, too. Where would you start looking for a UZ? I'd be worried about getting those in depending on how hard they drove them into the ground, too.

Fab pricing just has standard bumpers and they drill holes and move mounts around. so normally, my fab charges $800-$1200 for bumpers for no matter what model. Then a bit more if you're looking for stingers or inboard fogs or whatever. Plus it's nice to just have a person to tow a vehicle to in case you get a few rock hits off road and need a pneumatic press one day or another.

i love gx's. they are gaining traction as of late, more aftermarket support too. i think they make a kit now where you can remove and replace the ahc which is really is their only achilles heal (same with the lx470 aka 100 series lexus variant.)

honestly the UZ motors are some of the most bulletproof ever made. really the only thing that sucks is the timing belt needs to be replaced every 90k. outside that they require very little outside of fluids.

i would love to become land cruiser jockey. show me the way

I'm just unsure what lockers he had. I emailed him asking for more information and could just toss it at the Fab's - another benefit of having a dedicated shoppe is the storage space for like 3 months when you get project cars.

I think he's waiting on someone with enough know how to deal with it. Depending on the lockers he has, it could be a turn-off to casual campers who are looking to buy land cruisers. Were you looking on getting a set of air lockers or was that someone else?

Depends where you buy your stuff from. At least in Australia they're relatively cheap to own, operate and upgrade regardless as to whether they're a flagship vehicle. Bloody expensive new, and Toyota dealership parts and service is exy, but there's plenty of aftermarket support for them, especially when companies like "Terrain Tamer" are developing or rebranding upgraded OEM quality consumables like bearings, CVs, axles, clutches, hubs, prop-shafts, you name it. Might be worth seeing what their shipping to the states is worth.
Things like ARB branded bar work is expensive regardless of the car, but well worth it IMO (they stand up to our endless corrugations like no other).

"anon what are you doing in that ditch?"
SHUT UP FAGGOT I NEED TO TAKE PICTURES FOR /ih8mudd/

Here's a question: Land Cruiser or Suburban?

Why don't you have an /ORG/ stickie on your land cruiser?

How often do you go to Red Lobster and order only their sides and fill up on their biscuits because you're feeling cheap and fancy?

I found who was good when the Fab I finally went to wasn't 1. a fucking "family friend" who didn't know what a fucking slave cylinder was 2. had a huge selection of offroad vehicles on this lot (3 of which are his) and 3. is almost important to schedule a time in and a lot of work needs to be scheduled in a week advanced. Your a salesman - you should know what to look for in terms of vehicle men. Whenever I'm in there for more than 30 minutes, there are always people who come in and are like "hey fab, have you found a cheap YJ yet for my son" or "DUDE sup! how was the trek last weekend?". I found them through both the local ontario trail sponsors and the offroad stores when I went in there and refused to be price gauged for just wanting to buy shackles.

What the fucc is mud classifieds? Also where is it? Drive it up with this guy >>16827855 and that way he'll have a ride home, too. I

lol we actually have a bit of terrain tamer finally making its way over here its glorious.
if you want to maintain your vehicle with all oem parts though (which you should) in america its pretty pricey. not out of control or anything but if you compare it to a ranger its night and day.
agree with you on the arb bumpers though well worth the cost.

>>16828011
>Here's a question: Land Cruiser or Suburban?
well obviously i have my bias but the cruiser is better in nearly every single way except cost. they are more expensive to maintain and parts cost more. if you can swallow that though they are much more robust vehicles that have stood the test of time in the australian and african outback for decades and decades.
there is a reason that the overwhelming majority of expedition vehicles in the african and australian outbacks are mostly japanese and mostly land cruiser.

No shit you fucking genius.
Short of an HD pickup however, the 9.5" crown 1 1/3" floating axle is more than adequate for turning serious rubber on an SUV that tares at a little over 2 tonne. A Burb on the other hand that requires near 40" rubber to gain the clearance of a Cruiser with 35" tires requires every bit of that 14 bolt rear end when it's got 3 tonnes of resistance against it.
>itt, we learn the definition of relativity

Regardless of angles and HURR DURR OFF ROAD ENGINURED, big tires make for small obstacles, and small obstacles are easy. Also flotation. Displace enough water with your tires and you can literally float across water crossings.

>Here's a question: Land Cruiser or Suburban?
Depends on budget, your willingness to keep dumping money into repairs instead of upgrades, and what you want to do with the vehicle. The Suburban will tow more, has more space to sleep in, is cheaper, easier to find parts for, and requires less maintenance. The Land Cruiser is slightly more capable.

If I'm renting one to wheel with for a week? Land Cruiser, all the way.
If I'm owning one for the rest of my life? Suburban, all the way.

I think you don't understand offroading and to crawling. No matter how good your approach or departure angle is, like a TJ has, you'll need bigger tires and more ground clearance the more hardcore you go. There is a reason that no matter the brand of vehicle they all eventually end up with 1 ton axles and 40+" tires. Also most short wheelbase rigs stretch their rigs out to make them work better with the bigger tires and also make them more stable going up and down steep obstacles.

I'm not saying GM suburbans are the best at hardcore 4 wheeling, but they can hold their own against Toyotas and jeeps. Also you have to build around your rigs weaknesses. I guarantee I had less money in 1 ton axles, flexible leaf suspension, large tires and the cost of my suburban, then you paid for the "fancy" land cruiser.

Just stating the facts, 1 ton GM axles are superior in stock and near stock trim to all toyota axles when it comes to ultimate strength, which is what you need when running the large tires needed for the red and black trails. Go on pirate 4x4 forum and read all the builds from the jeep, dodge, ford and Chevy sections and you'll see that 90% of the hardcore builds use the Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear axle. I build my shit to be indestructible so I can wheel it hard on hard trails that make most people doubt that it's even possible to traverse with a 4 wheel vehicle. I don't build it to crawl around a mall parking lot like all the Toyotas you see with ARB bumpers and polished with fancy LED light bars.

Buy and build whatever you like, but you can never compare a mall crawler to my purpose built 4wd machine. Plus the look on jeepers faces when you crawl up a trail, in a fuckhuge suburban, that they wouldn't even attempt if you paid them, is priceless.
>>
>>16828567
No matter the vehicle a 35" tire will never crawl up and over the same rock as well as a 40" tire. I don't care how light or special your rig may be...
>>
>>16828567
"but it isn't fair to compare two different axles..."

Cry some more, maybe you can think up some more exuses for why your axles aren't up to snuff to cheap GM axles that can be easily bolted under 73-87 GM trucks and 73-91 GM suburbans and K5s.

Life isn't always fair...

Just like a Suburban is more than adequate for the sort of mild trails you'd take your DD down.
Are you the same guy that used to go on about how the Toyota 9.5 "had a bigger ring gear than most 1 tons" when in fact it's the same as the smallest 3/4 ton and smaller than any 1 ton?

>Burb on the other hand that requires near 40" rubber
Just because he has 40s doesn't mean that 40s are needed to get to the same level as 35s on a Cruiser. Where are you pulling these arbitrary numbers from anyway?

>to gain the clearance of a Cruiser with 35" tires
Ground clearance depends on tire size. Anything you lose in axle to ground clearance with a bigger diff is gained in strength. If you're talking about any other clearance, then it's independent of tire size so bringing up tire diameters doesn't mean anything anyway. So why are you bringing it up?

>got 3 tonnes of resistance against it.
>tonnes
What the fuck is a tonne? We deal with tons here.
Suburbans are around 5000lbs. A 3/4 ton diesel 4x4 is 5330.

If we don't take weight into account, you're absolutely correct. A larger tire will make a given obstacle smaller in comparison to a smaller tire.
But in that light we also have to take the extra resistance that tire has working against it lifting that weight up the same obstacle, which in turn renders the 2.5" difference in radius (ie; the point at where a tire either rolls over or rolls up) negligible. Again, relativity.

That's not how it works. You're thinking in terms of power:weight and attempting to apply it to flotation:weight, neither of which directly relate to tire diameter:vehicle weight, likely because it's impossible to relate the two universally.

Suppose you lack the forward traction to push the front tire into an obstacle to get over it. Regardless of weight, if the radius of the tire is larger than the height of the obstacle, you can get over it. If the radius of the tire is smaller than the obstacle, you can not.

You also failed to take into account that weight increases traction.

You're either illiterate or intentionally being obtuse, as that's exact let what I pointed out in the very post you replied to. Given your ability to construct a coherent post, I'll presume it's the latter.
>"the point at where a tire either rolls over or rolls up"
I accept that, but you also have to accept that the requirement for that "arbitrary" 2.5" difference in radius to climb a given obstacle as opposed to roll over it becomes negligible when taking into consideration the substantially lighter weight that's required for it to drive "up".
>You also failed to take into account that weight increases traction
I did, but then that is completely arbitrary when you're not taking into account that more traction is in turn required to shift a greater mass anyway, and becomes increasingly irrelevant the greater angle of climb.

>as that's exact let what I pointed out in the very post you replied to.
Except you were implying that weight mattered in that situation when it doesn't. The weight is negated by the traction it provides with more pressure. The larger tire acts an unrelated advantage. The little bit of extra weight does not "cancel it out" like you imply.

>becomes negligible when taking into consideration the substantially lighter weight that's required for it to drive "up".
The weight difference makes itself negligible with the extra traction it provides. It is entirely unrelated to the size of the obstacle or tire, which are the only things that matter at this point. The larger tire means that the vehicle can move forward, where as the vehicle with the smaller tire must first travel vertically before it can start to move forward. With limited rear traction to push the front tire into the obstacle, the front of the tire can not pickup the front of the truck no matter how light it is.

>shift a greater mass anyway
With limited traction, you can only shift the mass forward. The small tire vehicle due to needing the mass shifted directly up before it can move forward is now stuck, where as the large tire vehicle can pull itself up with forward movement.

Essentially, the large tire vehicle has to climb a step, while the small tire vehicle is hitting what can be considered a wall as far as it's concerned, since it can not reach the top. Regardless of weight, a tire can climb a step much easier than a wall.

What matters here is tire diameter, not vehicle weight. The two are NOT directly related as you seem to think.
>>
>>16828731
>As much as I lament the GM fangirl meme, I'm starting to see why it gets so much momentum.
Not even a GM fangirl. If I were to buy an early 90s econobox I'd avoid GM like the plague. The GMT platforms are fantastic though.

>>16828898
>That's comparing outright axle strength between two irrelevant size vehicles.
98 Land Cruiser and 98 Suburban are within 100 lbs of each other.

>his 14 bolt is tiny compared to a Dana 50-170
14 bolt is huge compared to a Dana 50. 10.5" vs 9"
Ring gear is the same size as a Dana 70 but the 14 bolt is a much better design more comparable to the Dana 80 in strength.
>>
>>16828948
>Except you were implying that weight mattered in that situation when it doesn't. The weight is negated by the traction it provides with more pressure. The larger tire acts an unrelated advantage. The little bit of extra weight does not "cancel it out" like you imply.
Were you dropped on your head as an infant?
>The weight difference makes itself negligible with the extra traction it provides.
Correct, it's completely relative. "more weight provides more traction" which is required for more weight.
>The larger tire means that the vehicle can move forward, where as the vehicle with the smaller tire must first travel vertically before it can start to move forward.
You're sounding like a broken record, but we have both agreed on this.
>With limited rear traction to push the front tire into the obstacle, the front of the tire can not pickup the front of the truck no matter how light it is.
The downward weight on the (let's say front tire) is absolutely critical when relying on that tire's tractive ability to climb vertically (in conjunction with the opposite end holding said tire against that vertical climb). The weight over said opposite end and the traction it applies is relative.
>Essentially, the large tire vehicle has to climb a step, while the small tire vehicle is hitting what can be considered a wall as far as it's concerned, since it can not reach the top. Regardless of weight, a tire can climb a step much easier than a wall

it's not bad if you're just going using it as an outdoors utility vehicle. It's only people who use them as serious trail crawlers that want to shit on independent suspension.

personally, I use my truck for hunting/camping/fishing trips and anything else I might want to do outdoors. I don't like to go on trails. It honestly sounds like a dumb idea to me.

Toyota fangirl logic at it's finest. It doesn't matter how good it is, if third world shitholes don't use it I wont either.

For a start, the 90 series is tares at just under 1900kg, but then the 90 series you're talking about is the midsize Prado on Hilux/Tacoma 8" running gear.
The FZJ80 Kerbs at just over 2100kg with the UZJ100 Kerbs at 2300kg.
I'll even play into your favourtism by comparing the lightest half ton Suburban, which tares off at 2540kg... Not really seeing where that "72lb" comes in. Hell, the diesel HD 2500 comes in closer to 3 metric tonne. Horses for courses.
Width wise they're much the muchness, with the later model J100 even coming in marginally wider in some examples than the 8th gen Burb, but then you take length into play where both wheelbase and overall length exceeds half a meter in both cases.

Back to the strength of the Toyota 9.5", it's regularly powered by the bespoke 6.5 Chevrolet diesel in both N/A and turbo form without any reliability concerns coming to head, but then again, that's relative to having a vehicle that tares at 2100kg and GVMs at just under 3 tonne to one that tares at 2.5 and GVMs at 3.9 tonne. I'm sure the 9.5 would struggle in an HD, but it's sure as hell excessive in a vehicle that's marginally larger than a midsize SUV.

The lightest 100 series is 2370kg, the lightest 1/2 ton Suburban is 2186kg, the diesel 4x4 1/2 ton Suburban is 2402kg and weighs more than a 4x4 3/4 ton 5.7 since it has the same 3/4 ton frame, trans, t case, front diff, and rear diff, but with a heavier diesel engine.

>Lmao I don't actually remember that one. Do you have screen caps?
I might on an old hard drive. It was when we were doing back to back Toyota master race threads. I think his final justification for judging the Range Rover so favorably ended up being that "several people on his street owned one"

Suburban Defense Squad was defending the Hummer H2 at the time. There were a lot of Unimog dick suckers talking about how the H2 was WAYYYYY too big to be at all viable as an ORV. ORG has improved since then. We seem to have a lot less brand whores that don't drive and more people that actually wheel.

I might have screen caps on an old HDD but I'd have to do some digging.
