I test drove a pretty shit one and it was to this day the slowest car I've ever driven

e34 535 and 540 are pretty good. 525.. not so good.

what this guy said. I've owned a 525i and a 535i, and the bigger engine really helps in such a heavy car.
not to mention the M30 in the 535i is basically bulletproof if you just do some basic maintenance once in a while. the 2.5 M50 had a lot more problems such as water pump impellers breaking. additionally, the VANOS on my 525i was noisy.

How long did the 535i last you?

it had 300,000 kilometers on the clock when I sold it 6 years ago. mechanically, it was still fine, but I was short on money at the time. too bad I had to sell it, or I'd probably still drive it. a mate had a 735i with the same engine with 440,000km and it still ran fine.
