The Olds is almost up and running reliably. Did all this over the past week.
>New alternator
>New alternator connector
>Tightened the belt all to shit

Finally got the battery on a tester and it came up bad. Picked up a brand new Optima redtop and it seemed to finally be fixed.

Got the exhaust run from the headers to the muffler. Sounds and runs way better now, but it still has a god-awful header gasket leak. Bought a new set, so those will probably be done soon.

Piece of shit drained and died on the way back home. I got a dash mount for my phone and bought a speedometer app, and I actually was going the speed limit this time. I suspect that the serpentine belt is stretched, and it's slipping at higher speeds. Got a jump, drove 45mph all the way home, didn't have an issue.

Alternator is spitting out just over 12 volts at idle. Not sure if belt slippage is causing it, or just a shitty alternator. It's a $55 refurbished one from O'Reilly's.

Fuck. I've been driving my 01 malibu since then and holy shit that car is on it's last legs. I guess 240,xxx miles is the end of life for it.

Got a little carried away putting a shopping list together for the galaxie. My entire next check is going towards it:

>Load leveler rear shocks
>Moog rear springs & pads
>All new brake system
>shift kit for transmission i have in the garage I'm going to put in it soon
>header kit
>completely new 3" exhaust system
>moog u joints

and of course..
>13 ball shifter

Current running total is $807.03.

mulling over if i should sink another 500 into the car with my next next check and buy a detroit locker.

Guyz I have a few questions.
I live in yurop so most of the answsers will start with "you'll have to import XXX".
The car is a '65 mustang Convertible code A.
It has been repainted by a previous owner to look like a GT350 and I know It will never feel right, I'd like to approach a GT350 feel.
1/ Do you know if "K" engines are still "findable"? (If I remember well, K-code mustang are GT350)
2/ It's not my DD, but I tend to cover long distances usually, what choice I have for a 5-speed manual? (currently a 4-speed manual)
3/ to upgrade breaking, i'm looking for 15" wheels and I really like the style of the GT500 ones. Do you know where I can find some? (pic related)

thanks for your help :)
>>
>>16824353
You would probably be done going with a t5 world class five speed, and the k code is available, but if you are modifying the transmission you might as well convert like an explorer 302 or a hipo roller motor.

If you really want to buy a k code, they're available, just be prepared to deal with a bunch of "I know what I got" boomers

>tfw scared of having to rebuild my 364 if it ever blows

I heard it's extremely expensive
>>
So, question for all the /o/tists here, i'm currently in the final stages of rebuilding/replacing the brake system in a '69 mustang fast back...

I got around to bleeding the back drum brakes and when i finished with that i tested them, they didn't expand properly... The calipers in the front work perfectly, but the drums dont...

So my question is, what am i missing? could there still be air in the lines? Did i fuck up the rear brakes somehow? do they just need adjustment? (i tried turning the self-adjuster knob to expand the brakes and it completely stopped expanding when the brake pedal was pushed, altogether)
>>
>>16824372
I should probably note, i'm going to try starting it up today and pushing on the brakes a bit, seeing if that fixes anything.
>>
>>16824367
It's costs as much as rebuilding any other engines. This meme that 50s cars are super fucking expensive needs to die.
>>
>>16824773
Well I've never had to rebuild an engine before, but the last owner said his other 364 cost him 5000-6000 for a full rebuild
>>
>>16823775
>>16823809
I considered putting some Welds on it, but this sounds like a better idea. I want to keep it looking relatively slow.

>>16824301
I'm probably gonna replace both anyways. I want a 100-amp one-wire alternator.

Everyone should check out the kik group. A couple people joined, and it made for a nice conversation.
>>
>>16824182
The motus V4 is basically an LS7 so it'd probably bolt to the tranny without much effort.
All those others would need snowflake bellhousings.
>>
>>16824931
Unless he paid for some real boutique machine work it shouldn't have cost him that much for a stock rebuild. Assuming you put it together yourself

Got an 85 mustang GT a week ago so I can finally start the 5.0 into the Courier swap. Second day of owning it, I go to start it and the ignition lock cylinder gets fucked. Order and receive the replacement and it starts snowing like crazy, basically burying the Mustang in my backyard.. So once I'm done with the 5.0 in the Mustang I want to put a motor that can work with the stock T5 transmission, any ideas or recommendations?

It's a father/son project car of which I am the primary driver of and dump my own cash into it. His car is an 82 camaro pro street car that he is building into a nitrous small block car with a TH400 and a brake. I don't post it because it's his car and he will be driving it.

You can be buttmad all you want but that doesn't change that me and my father have a good relationship and that we bind over building cars

Didn't keep any receipts to track it but my rough estimate is $350 - $400 there and back. I normally get somewhere between 300 and 320 km out of a full tank.

The reason I was Jasper bound in the first place was to play a show with my band at one of the clubs downtown, my cut was $350 so I figure most of my gas bill was covered. It was a killer time, if I were one to complain about gas bills I wouldn't be drivin' the old dog in the first place.

Yeah. Was going to shave the head (6.5:1 comp) but got into reading about flathead performance and the more you shave the head the more it chokes airflow in and out of the cylinder. I've heard to can smooth the edge of the cylinder (ie, give it a nice rounded path into the cylinder instead of a sharp cylinder edge) but that just seems like it would lower compression even more. Some people put dividers in the head between the valves to direct airflow but I dunno, probably won't do that. There a couple people that have turbod them and I'm conversing with one who has, but that would be years down the road. I just want it to run.

>>
>>16834191
Well, 90 layers are off at least. I've found 3 layers of military od, figure I'll leave them on. I've still got some "trim pieces" to take off and do but I'm waiting for it to get a bit warmer. The stripper seems to work better in the warm and it's snowing right now :( maybe next week. I've actually started to take the body mounts off so it'll be a bit easier to do the frame and brakes.

>>16834050
Either would be fine, the turbo one I heard was nasty though, love that sound. Like a diesel somehow.

>>16834058
With 6.48:1 it was rated as needing (I think) like 68 octane or something. I didn't think raising a point would need over 93, didn't do a lot of research though as I decided not to shave. Could get leaded avgas though I suppose, valve seats are ground into the block.

Is it better to buy a car and restore it from the ground up or buy one that's already a driver?

I want to fix up a car but even with a big time investment, it almost seems better to buy a car that's already in decent shape. I'm afraid I'll get over my head and buy a money pit, especially with the cost of parts for these cars.

My other reason behind truck is that fuck huge engine bay. They were built to take a factory big block, so you have more room to Fab up a turbo system and a good cooling system

If the starter is good but jumping across the main solenoid terminals didn't work ya did it wrong or with insufficient contact.

Unlike a Chevy where you have to actuate the solenoid to move the Bendix drive fork, old Ford starters only require power to the starter motor. You can jump from the hot battery lead to the small solenoid terminal to test the noid for function, but just because it clicks doesn't mean the contacts inside are passing enough juice to do their job.

You can also go direct to the starter side of the solenoid with a jumper cable. Connect to + battery terminal first, then touch other end of cable to noid. If starter is good and cable has no issues, starter will run. You can also go direct to the connector on a starter if you can reach it, but I don't like to arc mark my starter.

Replace your battery cables including the ground if you've not done that since acquiring the truck. Cables can corrode internally. Ensure ground cable bolt threads are clean, and that your ground cable goes to somewhere on the engine. You can route a second cable to the frame but a happy starter circuit is direct as practical.

Cool trick I use on my Harleys is to install brass acorn nuts on the solenoid terminals.
That protects the copper terminal bolt and you can jump across the brass acorn nuts with no risk of dicking up the noid terminal bolts. You will not need a spare noid if use acorn nuts because they WILL conduct enough juice. They'd work if the noid were gone and that's all that was left on the cables.

I use Ford noids on my Fords and Harleys. They are pretty good if Standard Motor Products brand. The separate Ford solenoid design is so good it's used as a cure for hot-start problems on Chevys.

Twelve volts is below battery resting voltage. You has alternator or other problem.

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/faulty-alternators-quick-test/

While at it ensure your battery cables, including ground, are in good condition. I replace them on every old ride I buy which has been many over the years. It's good insurance.

>Also I moved here and built a life for myself, git gud.
That's fine, i built a life for myself here, using my own resources only. I'm not going to move to a shitty state to buy a C10 that needs 5 times it's cost in rust repair like some faggot who doesn't know what a crush washer is.

>there's a reason people tout 300 days of sunshine

Frankly, C10s are not cheap and Falcon, Nova, Dart make better turbo projects.
>>
>>16840333

Good thing 1957 and 1958 were only two years out of the entire 10 years of the 1950s.
Sounds like it's a minority and your claims of poor craftsmanship is undeserved especially when it says Ford and GM were no better but since this is /o/ we clearly only cherrypick information.
>>
>>16840608
Except my claim was that if you bought a Chrysler in the 50s it was either ugly and slow or poorly built. Your argument is that Chryslers of the late 50s were well built. Looks like you got BTFO.
>>
>>16840636
>were well built
They were. 8/10 years m8.

>slow
300's weren't slow.

Better luck next time.
>>
>>16840655
Except my point is that Chrysler products were either poorly built OR ugly. There's a reason Chrysler was the distant 3rd of the big three in sales for all of the 50s
>>
>>16840743
>ugly
This is completely subjective.
I don't know why you even brought it up.

>Except my point is that Chrysler products were either poorly built
My point is that the poor build quality was for, as you've claimed, two years.
That's literally nothing

>There's a reason Chrysler was the distant 3rd of the big three in sales for all of the 50s

Don't pretend this was because of two years of poor build quality.
GM itself controlled like 50% of the auto market, not having anything to do with how poorly their cars were made.
>>
>>16840769
>being this obtuse
The reason chryslers sold poorly for the first half of the decade was because they were ugly. Chrysler had to take a 250 million dollar loan to even build the forward look cars.
>>
>>16840769
>That's literally nothing
It was everything at the time though. For at least a decade after people would not even consider a Chrysler product. Face it, they fucked up with the 57's, followed that with the absurd downsizing of '60 or '61, and suffered epic mismanagement in the 60's and 70's. Two chairmen? That hate each other? Really?! Not to mention a ridiculous lack of cost information. Iacocca tells a story that they didn't even know what a starter cost when he got there. IN NINETEEN SEVENTY FUCKING NINE!

Chrysler was only good under Walter P and again in the Nineties before what's his face sold them out for a fucking paycheck (albeit a good one).

You think they're ugly, i don't. It's all subjective.

>Chrysler had to take a 250 million dollar loan to even build the forward look cars.

You seem to think that just because it was one of the big 3 that is had this massive wealth, it didn't. It has always been the smallest of the Big 3 always.

Whether or not you think they're ugly has not bearing on the build quality of the cars.
Since you're so skilled at reading Allpar articles it might behoove you to go read about how much Chrysler has innovated the auto market.

>>16840933
>Face it, they fucked up with the 57's,
I wasn't alive at the time so i can't say.
That said it looks attractive to me.

You keep sitting here trying to tell me something is ugly when i don't agree, there's no point in you continuing this line of thought, you won't ever change my opinion.

The fuck up of the 57's had nothing to do with appearance it was all QC. They were initially popular but it wasn't long before word was out about poor fit and finish causing irreparable water and wind leaks, premature perforating rust, and electrical failures. Interestingly no one says much about the engines which suggests they were one bright spot in the whole debacle.
>>
>>16840964
>missing the point this bad
You're actually retarded. I'm saying that the 1950-1955 models are ugly and when they redsigned them to not be ugly they had quality issues. Chrysler is the smallest big three because of mismanagement and massive blunders like the entire 1950s. When every car maker took a massive step forward in the 1950s Chrysler lost the only asset they had which was their reputation for quality. My point stands that Chryslers from 1950-1955 are ugly while Chryslers from 1957-1959 are poorly built.

No shit, a Chrysler power train can outlive you.

>They were initially popular but it wasn't long before word was out about poor fit and finish causing irreparable water and wind leaks, premature perforating rust, and electrical failures.
Once again, this was only two models years. Back to my original point. This reputation is undeserved. This sort of thing has happened to every manufacturer at some point saying Chrysler is worse than any other is showing your bias.

>>16841106
>I'm saying that the 1950-1955 models are ugly
Yes, and?
>Chrysler is the smallest big three because of mismanagement and massive blunders like the entire 1950s.
Okay, this doesn't change my point that it was still the smallest of the Big 3. Thanks for confirming my statement.

>When every car maker took a massive step forward in the 1950s Chrysler lost the only asset they had which was their reputation for quality.
A reputation which carried until the 80's and 90's.

>My point stands that Chryslers from 1950-1955 are ugly
Okay whatever you're just beating a dead horse here. Once again this is subjective. I'll keep saying it until you understand it.

>Chryslers from 1957-1959 are poorly built.
cool, two years.
>>
>>16839956
I mean how long would it last without rust appearing after the painting has been finished and the car is reconstructed and has been back on the road?

I don't understand how you are so obtuse. Consumers in the early 1950s thought the Chrysler products were not particularly stylish. They were outdated designs. Yet they were still quality cars which is why people still bought them. The entire point of the 57 was to change this perception. Except they had terrible quality issues. If you were a car buyer in 1955 you thought Chryslers were kind of stodgy. And by 1959 you thought Chryslers were poorly put together. It doesn't matter if looks are subjective to you and it doesn't matter if you think the quality problem was overblown. It's what people thought AND Chrysler knew about both issues.

How much boost do you think a mid 60's Dodge 225 I6 can take? I'm thinking about using a Holset HX35
>>
>>16841694
probably only a couple pounds without it grenading shortly after
>>
>>16841705
oh fug, is there any decent american I6 from like 65-75 that can take like 10psi+?
I'm planning on having it setup to drive around on like 3-4psi, but crank it way up when I go for passes at the strip
