Hey /org/.
I'm going to be living in my 1985 SUV.
It hasn't been repainted ever.
I want to redo it, but I don't want to make it look too nice and get broken into with all my shit.
What are some things I can do to my car that won't make it look ugly, but will definitely lower its value to OTHER people.
I was thinking decals and stickers on the window.
On my computer right now without, Don't have pics on me.

I just went outside to take a picture and damn does it look much better now that I did some aesthetic changes to it instead of purely utilitarian.

Speaking of Ranger a shite, the front torsion bars are annoying to lift and I had to bring it to the fab to swap the keys out (then wheel allign them). But it was worth the $450 to increase the ride quality. Everyone who's ever owned a Ranger or on forums always recommend just jacking up muh bars but I'm very happy with this swap and worth the money

>>16801646
'99 has which front suspension? Kits are annoying to place in yourself for the torsion bars. Otherwise, the wishbone / A IFS are pretty e z.
I'd recommend getting a front bumpie first as lift kits are more or less useles without the appropriate tyres which are going to run you the price of the vehicle.

It all depends on what you want to do, desu.

I also have a 99 ranger. Superlift is the only suspension lift manufacturer as far as I know and it's pricey. 1500 bucks pricey, and the rear lift is just blocks. You can crank the front torsion bars to get 2 inches of lift in the front, and longer spring shackles in the rear to lift the rear end 2 inches. The ranger has a shit aftermarket support desu.

Oh yeah. If they're torsions, I know at least 2 people who have swapped them out for a d44 or different coil IFS for e z lifting.
Torsion bar crank up costs you only the price of wheel alignment and the 1 hr of jacking up the torsions. But I do so much highway driving that I justified a key swap for $450 giving me 2.5 inches of lift and somehow a smoother ride.

Again, it's all based on what you want to do with the Ranger. Maybe get a shell accessory first?

I don't think you know how gearing is effected when you go to a bigger tire. When you run a taller than stock tire it is like you geared the truck higher, lower numerically, which means you're effective gearing is like 3.55 to 1 with the 4" taller tire (after quick maths). It makes the truck have to work harder to accelerate from a stop hence the decrease in fuel mileage.

The more you know...
>>

>>
>>16803550
thats an impossible question you are going to need to be more specific.
what exactly do you mean when you say off roading, where will you be taking this truck?
are you doing extended overlanding trips? are you rock crawling? are you doing some high speed desert shit?
how many people would you like to bring with you?
do you care about gas mileage?
whats your budget?
are you planning on upgrading it?
why are you such a faggot?
i could keep going but give us some more info
>>
>>16803472
I was gonna do it before summer but you assholes made me expedite the process.
Shell was $500. Keys $550 after allignment, whel covers $80. Door mating surface (lessens wind noise) cost like $120. Spent $1250 in the past 2 weeks on this thing

>>16803502
Wow. I've literally been telling this to people for the past 2 weeks of those numbers.
The important part is that I mentioned the engine works harder and muh em pee gees suffer a bit (when you upsize tyres)- so the numbers aren't that big of a Fucc up, j'suppose.

Thanks for no bully, anon. I'm going to look at regearing when I actually look into lockers in the near future. I'll look this shite up in my spare time tho.

>>
>>16803598
4.56s or 4.88s if you regear for the 32" tires will get you close to the same gearing as you had with the 4.10s and 28" tires. The 4.56s will be a hair higher gearing then stock, and the 4.88s would be a hair lower. Me personally would error on the low side, numerically higher gear, because it takes stress off the transmission and engine to turn the tires.

The "I hate Daylight Savings" pre-Death Valley trip is on.
Heading to Mojave tomorrow. Pics upon return.
>>
>>16800198
Step 1: Consider why you're living in an SUV. If this is because you want to save money by not paying rent, you really should consider a windowless van. Seriously. It's very hard to have any sort of privacy in a windowed vehicle, and there are tons of examples on how to makes vans into basically mini-RVs.
Just for reference, what make/model?

Step 2a: Sand your future home with high-grit sandpaper, and then mask off all the edges of stuff you don't want over-sprayed.

Take it to Maaco and pay $300 for them to apply a single-stage enamel that will look OK. Definitely won't look "too good" if that's what you're worried about.

OR

Step 2b: Get an electric sprayer, and the appropriate amount of black plasti-dip. It won't look great, but better than shit faded paint. Definitely won't give the impression that it has
>>
>>16804388
Yeah, it's just a common split rim size. I like the way the skinnier tires work in the bush compared to the wider 10.5-12.5" tires all the cool kids seem to run these days. I'd love to get a set of 255/85R16 muddies for play, but realistically I'd end up with what ever was around second hand, and that'd probably be 285/75.

Previous owner's tactic for my burb. It may have looked cool back in the day, but now it's faded to shit and since he didn't prep it's peeling/flaking. Pic related for reference. Is this the look you're going for?

For an added bonus:
It doesn't matter how shitty of a car it is. If people can see it in there, it wont be there when you return...

My advice, upgrade the axle locating studs from the standard 8mm to the 10mm ones found in the 100 series. You'd have to have the axle flange tapers enlarged and the hub drilled and tapped.
For switch able lockers you can get away with it (sometimes) but those studs are on borrowed time with an auto locker.

>you can turn the rack into something really fucking sweet for camping.
that has slowly been the forming idea for that rack.
i figure it can double as a roll bar so i dont die so readily if i tip it over at some point too.
i was considering building a slide in shell to go within the rack so everything can be dry without fucking around with tarps, that or build a ghetto roof that can be flipped out from the top then use a tarp for walls.
nothing is likely to happen before i can move though since i have shit for workspace now.

>>16811836
nah, those steps need to come off, theyre screwed into the rockers, too obtrusive and flimsy, if i snag one itll fuck the rocker panel up good.
>>
>>16811889
With they way those rails are set up, I don't think they'd be able to handle any type of rollover whatsoever. Don't count on them for that, lmao.

Anyway, the benefit of a fully tarp system is that you get amazing aerodynamics compared to other people's taller camping barges. A roof would partially negate that. Though, a full tarp setting will be annoying to set up and dismantle alone.

Also yeah, take the steps off and replace with rock sliders. Especially before you do any sort of lightly technical paths

i..i could triangulate it..
my hope would be that it would stop on its side, older pickups didnt have shit for roof integrity for a roll.
the flip out roof idea would be stowed flat like plywood on the top so aero shouldnt be much issue with it
ill probably swap the engine before that though, the 318 is so anemic i think loading it down then trying to go in the hills would just be frustrating

That's fair enough. It's not too much of a big deal to upgrade them later. When I had my J70, said studs had a tendency to stretch (as indicated by weeping diff oil) and start shearing off within about 12 months, and if the studs couldn't be extracted, I'd be up for a new hub too.

when they get stuck in low range roll back and forth with the wheels cocked to the left and change wheel direction if it wont let go. usually its a little bit of tension on the gears that keeps it from letting it switch back out.

yeah that makes sense. took a few diff and undercarriage hits along with some hard, frozen mudpits the while back that made Taynger think she was going at 20km/h despite being at rest.

i'm just always paranoid of wheel bends and things like transfer case locks or rear leaf spring arms getting knocked off by a piece of rock. you are pushing your vehicle to its limits after all.

back on topic: what are you trying to do with your ram btw? long bed would really help you with camping if you're 6 ft 2 or so.

He has a pretty sweet 1500 and can't be bothered to remember which engine he put in. probably a cumm'ns diesel :v)

sleep diagonally in a short bed! the ext. cab / access cabs are much better for people over 6 ft. because of the extra lean-back room. Though, they're harder on breakover angles (which i guess you are with your long bed too).

i've got those OEM skids that can handle trees catching onto them but i should put another piece of armour over the diff - you're right. all the important parts are protected and i have rock rails so i suppose that's fine until i get into more technical paths in late summer...
we don't have many rocks here in onterrible on the easy- medium trails.

Good on you for having a cargo carrier on your F-three limo, btw.

Anyway, if you do the tarp idea, you can flip open the tail gate and have your legs hang over the gate that way. Plus if she's a 5ft 5 q t, you can do a diagonal lay as whale.

I'd say a 50/50 split of both.

It's also kind of a turd on the highway, which makes me suspect that maybe a cylinder isn't firing or something. it's really peppy and fast from 0-50, but 50-75 is like driving a limp noodle. i understand that some of that is just going to be the gear ratio, but i also feel like it shouldn't be THAT bad on the highway.

not for hauling a trailer, its realistically probably like 100hp after 220k miles
for the cost of regearing i can get a better engine since the 318 is a tired dog.

>>
>>16820720
It's not that I want to crank them. I just know much too well how many electrical parts can fail and what a pain in the ass it is to fix'em all - I live in a climate where rubber and plastic just fall apart to dust in about five years.

Cranks will fail, too - but predictably and with cheap mechanical repair.
>>
>>16821588
>15-18 in a suburban
not happening my man. especially if you are loaded down with gear, expect 10 or so around town, maybe even less
>>
>>16821634
You know, power window mechanism is rather cheap to replace, even if conditions are rough i don't think 5 years of cranking windows will save you that much money.
Also. where the fuck are you and wha't all the deal with harsh weather?
>>
>>16821494
Sounds like a Suburban may be a little bigger than what you NEED, but is damn near perfect for what you want.
I'd keep it 99 or older both for simplicity and size, as the 2000+ body style is quite a bit wider and taller.

If you want to lay down to sleep, a large rooftop tent is going to be an absolute requirement for any of the other choices.

>>16821425
>>16821588
Pleasure to drive, the 3/4 ton 4x4 5.7l averaged 16mpg in what could be considered some pretty abusive mixed driving. Expect 12-16 if you get a 7.4l.

>>16821608
Knowing how to drive a manual can prevent you from constantly stalling it, but the auto is still objectively better.

>>
>>16821687
No way it can be that bad. Do you own one?
>>16821712
Near 16 mpg is more what I was expecting. Though I'm looking for the newer ones 2003-2006 if I can find a cheap enough one with around 150000 miles.
The interior for them looks insane. So much room for everything and can sleep comfy. I won't be hauling anything big. Just sleeping bag, mattress, cooking stove, etc. Light things.
>>
>>16821770
And the engines available look like I'm going for a 5.3L. I don't want the bigger ones even if they're for sale.
>>
>>16797590
Just bought my friends 2000 XJ, it's completely stock. I plan on building it into a dedicated off-road rig that can still drive on the road if needed. Plan on going with a 6.5 long arm lift, frame stiffeners, rock rails, various armor, lunchbox lockers, SYE and probably 33s. And upgrade from there as needed or stuff breaks.
>>

The 03+ model got some minor interior updates and a major electronics overhaul. While I do like the newer steering wheel and center console, the older head unit was better and I've found the 03-06 to have a lot more electronics related issues than the 00-02 and 92-99 models.

The 5.3 is a great engine and is very reliable as long as you don't let the throttle body get too gunked up. That said, the 5.7 was a better engine for the application. Economy is pretty much the same but the 5.7 was a lot better in low to mid range power than the 5.3 is. You could probably get similar results with a mild towing cam in the 5.3.

I guess you've never lived in high temperature environments, anon.

Like I said above, in high temperatures and with high UV levels rubber and plastic fall apart to pieces and dust in a few years - as low as two if exposed all the time (i.e. not in the garage or under a car port).

Then you're fucked. And good luck finding what exactly fell apart if it is inside of your vehicle - all you'll be experiencing is maddening, constant, intermittent problems at the least convenient time.

I read that the flex fuel engines can be less reliable. Is that true? There's a local 2002 with 160000 miles that popped up today and it looks good in the pictures, but the ad says it has "5.7 liter flex fuel."
You think that's a big deal at all or no?
>>
>>16822110
Haven't heard anything differentiating the flex fuel variants from the standard, good or bad. What I would worry about is that they're advertising a 2002 as having a 5.7. 1999 Was the last year for the 5.7 in the Suburban.
>>
>>16822161
Yeah Wikipedia says 2002 has the 5.3 or 6.0. Nothing about a 5.7.

Here's the ad:

>>
>>16822170
Looks like a 5.3, maybe a 6.0. Definitely not a 5.7.

Ayy. No worries - I've sand jumped once in my life (if you could call it that) near the "dunes" in the dark so I can't really comment.

Rock crawling would be a past time for me as well if it wasn't for me using the trucc for work. Such is life in Onterrible.

Taco looks sweet btw. Glad you spent your weekend well!

Hey /org/

Recent college grad here, looking for a reliable 4X4 SUV that I can use to pack up and move as I potentially work jobs all over the country, tow a small trailer as well as slowly mod out into an aftermarket off-road beast over the next few years.

I'm leaning towards a mid-2000s 4Runner if I can find one near me for a reasonable price.

How much can I expect to spend?

Are there any other vehicles I should look at as an alternative?

And is there anything I need to know about 4Runners specifically?
>>
>>16822309
Jeep XJ. 3rd gen 4runners are a lot of money.
>>
>>16822309
>need to know about 4Runners specifically
One of the worst interior in terms of sitting position and space in general. It's like regular shitbox sedan. Rear seats don't have much leg room and not really comfy at all. Steering wheel is almost laying on your legs and getting in and out is annoying. And i am not even fat.
>>
>>16822324

A late 90s Cherokee was what I was initially leading towards, but the one I wanted got sold before I could snag it.

A friend with a 4runner talked me into leaning that way due to reliability. He's got an 04 he's modded heavily and it's a beast.

How much cheaper would an AWD XJ Cherokee be, and what's a good year to look for? Are they unreliable?
>>
>>16822309
You should consider a Suburban. They're basically the direct competitor to a 4Runner, except a lot better value for college students because they're useless pieces of shit that are too big to fit anywhere.
>>
>>16822361
A few come up every few months. You might be able to find a pre-lifted one on taller tyres and an upgraded bumper for $3000-$5000. That'll be more "offroad ready" and would cost half the price of what you would've gotten them for anyway.
>>
>>16822368
Why would college graduate need this fucking barn on wheels?
>>
>>16822368
Having driven a Suburban on a few long road trips, and having examined a 4Runner at length - I'd say Suburban is vastly superior at least as far as passenger comfort and cargo space are concerned.

4Runner is a coffin on wheels.

Never been in this general for some reason.
Saw the edition tho and was like fuck that.
Then I saw the map thingy and was like there's another nigga on Peterson that goes here.
Also that nigga has had to have seen my Danger Ranger.
This shit is too obvious.
>>
>>16822374

I'd rather get something close to stock, and slowly do it myself than trust Cletus' backyard muddin' machine.

>>16822387

Yeah, I'm not looking for a huge SUV, just something I can toss my shit into if/when i need to move, and go on camping trips, drive around with a big fluffy dog in.
I'm just sort of trying to plan ahead for the next 10 or so years, and my gut's telling me that a) a Toyota will be more reliable long-term than a Suburban or Jeep, and that b) gas prices on something as large as a suburban would add up over time.

Ripping out the seats and re-doing the interior would be one of the first things I'd do too, so I'm not too worried about comfort

Don't get me wrong though, I think old Cherokees are sexy as hell

Case in point.

I don't know why i am even discussing it with you, but you probably won't understand why i am getting triggered when i see rather ok car spoiled by owner's shit taste. Like WHY one would even want that shit on his car? In what fucked up state of mind one would think they add to the vehicle appearance?

Ah. 2014.

There are like two other White Rangerfags that jump in and out of here as well. One in Cali and somewhere else. Colorado has apparently some really nice trails in the nat. parks so you can take your stock up there with no issues.

4Runners are overpriced, overrated, and uncomfortable. They are reliable, but not nearly as reliable as Toyota brandwhores would have you believe.

>>16822368
>they're useless pieces of shit that are too big to fit anywhere.
Plenty of uses, just as reliable as a 4Runner, and you're only blaming the size to avoid admitting that you can't drive. They're not nearly as big as you think.
>>
>>16823847
This guys pretty much right. Although I don't think 4runners are uncomfortable.
And I used to drive a massive ram 2500 van. You can drive anything with enough time in it.

Also, I always saw the K5 as the chevy competitor to the 4runner.
