You probably got scammed. Check compression. You can have that done at a shop, it's not expensive. Afterwards you will know more.

Compression, timing, valve clearances (Valve condition), new spark plugs, new leads, check for arcing in the dark etc. Easy cheap shit first.

I might just take it to Toyota and ask them to do a full check on the engine.

If anything wrong I take it back to the guy that fixed it and he'll fix. I just got it back today anyway.
