The scenery is incredible beyond the outskirts of the city but touges are very far away from the capitol. Like hundreds of kms kinda far. And driving at night can be daunting. The Long Way Down showcased a couple good roads here. Ewan said it reminded him of Scotland.

As far as quality of life is concerned, it's quite good if you've got money like anywhere else. Rule of law is good but bureaucracy is maddening.

>>16792750
>actually using the word "touge"
that's a paddlin
>>
>>16792738
>yamaha were too cheap to include a $40 item on that bike

really makes you think, it's not that the lack of preload adjustment is the only problem with the bike, it's that it's emblematic of the rest of it, they don't care about how it actually rides because they know they're selling to idiots who don't know better.

>>
>>16792769
I know you're just a random retard shitposting, but it's $40 for a very cheap one, multiplied by millions of times for however many bikes they make.

Most people will never even touch the adjustment knobs on their suspension anyway, and you've probably never rode one, but they handle quite well for the average weight person.

If you really care, fork adjusters and valve kits aren't that expensive.
>>
>>16792801
>millions

okay maybe not that many but still. sounds like a small amount until you think about how much it'd actually cost to put on every bike, when most would go untouched anyway

>>

>you've probably never rode one

I have, that's why I know they're not all that good, the front end in particular is just atrocious, gives you no feel and just digs in when you turn in.

(again, not as bad as the MT-09 though.)

>Most people will never even touch the adjustment knobs on their suspension anyway

that's all I'm saying, they make these bikes for idiots who don't know better.
>>
>>16792827
They ride perfectly well enough for the average rider to cruise around town or go for a quick ride in the backroads, which is exactly what the bike is made for. You're complaining that the bike doesn't have things that are totally unnecessary for its place in the product lineup. If you actually gave a shit about front end feel, you'd be messing with it regardless, and upgrading a cheap front end like that is not hard at all

Hopefully the goon who bought you wheelied and crashed at least 3 times already.

Earplugs for over 20 minutes of high speed riding, think extended freeway commuting or even slower if your helmet is a bit loud.

Earbuds(music) for lower speed commuting just don't turn them up too much or you may do damage with them without noticing. Up to you but I like to listen to some music.

On the twisties, it depends how I feel but I rarely use earplugs there, although high speed twisties can be as fatiguing as the freeway and the silence can help you focus but it's nice to hear the bike working through the mountains and hearing other vehicles approaching.

Noise fatigue is a pain in the ass if you commute long distance on a bike and try to have a quiet conversation or really concentrate afterwards.
Also just about all helmets are loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss over time too, especially being exposed for long periods on commutes but it will slowly deteriorate your hearing. There are some helmets that are apparently very quiet even at freeway speeds but I've not bought one.

I use silicone ear plugs every day and wash them about once a week and they last a long time unless I lose them. At first I was worried about ear infections from reusing plugs but it never happened, they're still cheap (cheaper in long term I found) and go ride for an hour on the freeway without plugs, wait til your hearing is normal then ride back with the plugs and you will surely be convinced to wear them.

I don't know man, I tried the music shit. I even bought a 20S and I guess it's cool on the highway but I feel like I lose situational awareness locally. I like to try and hear everything around me. Everyone else I know just uses headphones but I could never listen to music on the twisties. Maybe I'm half retarded but I believe I need 100 percent concentration so for shifting and weight transfer I listen to the exhaust. That and I'm too lazy to make a good playlist so I keep getting mad and switching songs and give up.

If you feel it's distracting it's probably better for you not to wear them then, I didn't mean you NEED to listen to music or anything, in fact most of the time I'm riding I don't wear them but it can take some tension out of a busy commute and I don't have trouble concentrating or hearing the traffic around me.
It helps if you have earphones that let in as much outside sound (not in-canal earphones) and you don't turn the volume up too much (although that can be fun sometimes to cruise around with a good album on) but I've always seen hazards before I've heard them and even then I still hear them whether I'm wearing earphones or earplugs, I've ridden some friends bikes that were insanely loud and I don't think you can beat keeping your eyes alert and up.

It was cool for short local riding on the supermoto. Offers little to no protection but it's really crazy what you hear with no full helmet on. I wouldn't make it a regular thing but if I was riding with my other sm and dirtbike buddies around town it was adequate. I even fell a few times with it on while willieng and never hurt my head.

>>16793726

I think I have hearing damage from dirtbikes and 1000s running m4s. That and the truck I drive is pretty loud in the cabin on the highway. Maybe that's why I feel like I can't hear anything with music on. Also my Shoei is insanely good at blocking noise. Or again maybe I just can't hear shit.

Little easier install as well with the drop ins. Little extra bling too on top of the forks. Need to set sag still but I don't think I'm far off by the feel of things.

Just one. I think people make a bigger deal about the suspension then there is as we saw earlier in the thread. It was just a luxury to be able to upgrade and yea it feels great but it wasn't keeping me from doing anything before. I'm 15mins from the best twisties in GA and ride almost exclusively there. I see several people saying the stock suspension is almost unrideable or even dangerous which is totally assinine. It's a fine suspension for the style of bike it is. Any rider is going to benefit from upgrading their suspension to match their weight. It would be a valid complaint if the bike was 12000 USD or something.

it's not about what I think, it's what you think.

And I know deep down you regret buying it and you don't like it, that seed of doubt got planted a very short time after you bought it, maybe you swapped bikes with a mate for a moment and had the uncomfortable sensation of liking it much more, maybe it was after the 100th super jerky throttle roll left you marginally frustrated again, maybe you didn't trust it in a corner as the rear end wallowed over bumps with it's hilarious rear shock, "but!" you rationalized, "this is a cheap bike, and it's not a sportbike, that's normal", but you knew something was wrong, that's why you got the ECU flash and the new bars and the now the new suspension, you're hoping it'll all fall into place and you'll actually like it now but unfortunately you're chasing an ideal that actually only exists in other bikes.

Your subconscious knows it's not good, but you won't allow yourself to express it because that means you bought the wrong bike and you're an idiot. Hey! maybe it's financed and you're literally stuck with it? I don't know.

Check brand-specific forums because if you have a problem it's likely others do too. This is not a brand specific forum.

You wrote "reclining" and "redlining". Which is it?

Your no-lights problem may be a switch. Get a FACTORY service manual for your machine and study the schematic.

Find where power goes and trace it using a cheap test light. Test lights with bulbs are preferred because they are loads.

>>16793364
I've used EAR foamies on da flightline and for riding since 1981. They work great and clean your ears. Leave them in a pocket when you do laundry as they are washable.

https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Uncorded-Earplugs-Value-390-1000/dp/B0006GWRY0

To install, roll between thumb and forefinger. A bit of saliva is good lube for any ear plug.

CB 200s are not a pain to work on. Otheranon who had an XL was dealing with a different engine.

They aren't fast but they can be fun and are collectible. Condition is everything and the scrambler pipes and fuel tank are uncommon today.

For 800 I'd find something else unless it's cosmetically stock and looks really good. Then I'd buy it, sort it out and flip it later because it's a scrambler. If it's nice enough to buy, do not nigger it with any "cafe" shit which is absurd on that size bike and much less pleasant to ride.

Go to vintage Honda forums. /dbt/ is not a vintage Honda forums. You should be able to download factory service manuals there. Example:

if you're in a serious crash and have an actual injury, running over to your bike and picking it up is probably the worst thing you can do for yourself.
Picking your bike up right away won't help it any. It's the fall and slide that hurt it, not laying there.
>>
>>16794439
If you are injured, you'll know it.

I prefer to keep crankcase oil in the crankcase rather than letting it fill the top end. That's also why dirt bikers do it, plus of course if you have carbs fuel flooding is exasperating.

I've got tall offroading boots that almost go up to my knee right now and they're a pain in the ass to shift in on a sport bike with the foot pegs behind/underneath you.

Those were in the boot section of this site and they're higher than the shoes, seemed like a decent middle ground. Been using steel toed work boots for the past bit but they don't offer as much ankle support as I'd like.

Not much rain riding but I live in the PNW so I'd like some water resistance. My exhaust also runs right alongside the foot pegs on both sides so a cool boot takes precedent over a waterproof boot otherwise my feet start to cook.

I just spent 40 minutes trying to troubleshoot why my fuel wasn't coming out of my disconnected fuel tank until I realized there's a pump system that draws it out and it doesn't come out until you hook it back up. Seems a bit redundant with a petcock on it, but ok Honda..
>>
>>16794753
Dude. Honda tanks are stupid as fuck. What bike?

My shadow has the main tank that flows to the auxiliary tank and that flows through a petcock into the fuel pump and into the carbs. It's dumb but the only way they could fit the air intake tube and the gas tank in such a narrow way.

It's back together and I don't want to take it off again. Runs good enough with half and half old and new fuel.

Also fitting the carbs back on it was the worst thing I've ever had to do with a bike, and I had to do it twice because I stupidly fitted it back on without putting the throttle cables on first. 4 barrels fit in an upside down V pattern so you can't just slide it in easily, took 2 people, a steel bar, and enough force I thought I was going to break it.

Sounds surprisingly good with the stock cans though.

>If you are injured, you'll know it.
Not really, I didn't notice this until I had picked my bike up, walked around a little, and sat down on the guard rail, then finally noticed the blood pooling by my foot. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.
>>

You generally find out you're injured a little bit after desu.
>>
>>16794451
>If you are injured, you'll know it.
I broke my hand, brused both wrists, ribs, hips and knee.

I managed to stand up, remove my helmet, get my gloves up, run to my bike 20m further up the road, flip the kill switch, run back to my gear and stopping someone before collapsing. Couldn't walk for about a week, and getting out of bed was painful for 3 months.

They only found out my hand was broken after some x-rays, as I had more pain in my wrists and hip.

I didn't see it, just the on, off, reserve of the petcock. I could breath and suck air through it but nothing flowed out.

guys come here absolutley uninformed.

I'm a huge bike fan. the human powered ones.
a huge part of the appeal is understanding the whole thing and working on it to finetune and upgrade shit all the time.

Is something like this realistic with a motorcycle ?

could I buy somehting old and sturdy and fix it up ?
would you recommend any particular kind of motorcycle for something like this ?

also are dirtbikes practical ? I think I know the answer.

>>
>>16795232
Yep. I didn't try sucking gas out; I don't care about it that much. Just turned the tank over and sucked gasoline fumes through it. When I turned it to off, I couldn't suck or blow through it anymore so the petcock was definitely opening something.

>>
>>16795229
>Is something like this realistic with a motorcycle ?
Very much. A lot also depends on what you want to do. It's fairly popular right now to take older 70s-80s UJMs and modernize the suspension components and tune them a bit for more performance.
>could I buy somehting old and sturdy and fix it up ?
Yes.
>what motorcycle is gud idea
Any 2-stroke motorcycle or any pre-1989 bike would be a fairly good bet.

>Are dirtbikes practical
Yes unless you commute huge distances over the highway, and even then you could probably gear them for highway.
>>
>>16795229
Motorcycles are like cars; they've gotten more reliable with time but you can definitely get an old air cooled jap bike and drive it for forever as long as you keep up with maintenance. Dirtbikes/dualsports inherently need more maintenance and you'll get less mileage out of them than a road bike but yeah they can be practical.

>would you recommend any particular kind of motorcycle for something like this ?
There's literally hundreds of good models, just depends what's on your craigslist at the time.

Extremely linear power band, low rpm, and it only makes ~15% more power than a ninja 300 even though it's almost 60% larger.

Honda's had that engine with a couple tweaks every now and then around since forever so they've pretty much got all the kinks ironed out but it doesn't make for an exciting ride if that's what you were looking for.

bernoulli.jpg

>>16795432
When a pipe increases in section, the fluid passing through it slows down and increases its pressure, following Bernoulli's law (p + d g h + 1/2 u^2 d = constant, where p is pressure, d is density, g is gravitational pull, h is height and u is speed, basically if you make u greater, p must decrease) which is visually explained by pic related.
As you can see in >>16795463, the exhaust and inlet ports are open at the same time, which causes part of the mixture to escape.
The increase pressure generated by the exhaust gasses passing through the enlarged section avoids a large part of the mixture to escape.
This depends on the flow of gasses, which varies with engine rpm, but can be tuned for different engine speeds by means of a valve at the beginning of the exhaust that regulates the flow and allows the back-pressure to be ideal (at best) across all the rpm range.
