A v6 needs balancing shafts and extra weights, which rob power and efficiency. It's the same reason V12 and I6 are God tier.

On a (flatplane) V8, the crankshaft does not experience an imbalanced downwards bending force for every 180* of rotation.

On a V6, it does.

Theoretically, if a V8 and V6 have the same total mass of moving parts, the V8 can rev higher than the V6 without shaking itself to death.

Basically, crossplane V8s are dumb and flatplane V8s are breddy gud.

L6 and V12 are better than both, though.

V6s don't deserve the hate they get. They worse than an alternative at almost everything, but they're better than what you'd probably have if they didn't exist, and it's all down to packaging.

A V6 can be big enough and provide enough power and torque to replace a V8. It's small enough to be mounted transversely in a FWD setup. The compact profile means it can accommodate extra stuff in the engine bay, like turbos, that otherwise wouldn't be able to fit. Sure, it's not as smooth and doesn't sound as nice as other configurations, but it is the best compromise.

Because a manufacturer like Ford can develop one V6 and put it in everything from sedans to crossovers to Mustangs to F150s, they can spend three times developing and refining and manufacturing that engine than they would have on all the other options it replaces.

That means more often, we see new designs and improvements that would otherwise be very long lived, very old designs. We see high tech machining processes that otherwise would be a something built as cheap as possible. We see a V6 where you'd otherwise have an I4, in many cases, which results in a considerable performance bump.

No, a N/A V6 in a sports car isn't as nice as a N/A V8, but that's not really the alternative. The alternative is an I4 that's too small and just lets the whole thing down. The V6 in your Accord was never going to be anything better than a V6.

Sure it gets a little bit repetitive when manufactures slap the same V6 in every car they make, sometimes inline and sometimes transverse, but because of the ubiquity of that engine they're cheap, the parts are cheap, and the performance honestly is not bad.

Seriously. In 2012 a Toyota Sienna, which is a stand in for a boring vehicle with a boring engine, as standard as it gets, made 187 hp from a 2.7l I4. And now, it comes standard with a 3.5l direct injected V6 making 293 hp and an 8 speed auto.

Seriously, boring cars now make almost 300 hp!

To give that some context, 10 years ago 300 hp is what you got out of a Mustang GT. That was a big number! Now it's what you get out of a boring minivan. That is incredible. And the thing that makes Toyota (and everyone else is right there with them) put all that effort into an engine that goes in a fucking minivan is that that same engine goes in everything, and does everything.

No, the V6 is not the perfect engine. It has inherent flaws, but the reason we live with them is because it's actually pretty good at everything. It's the go anywhere, do anything engine. And they're cheap!

All hail the V6. The best engine for the real world. The automotive world is so, so much better for its existence.
