what's a solid car for a first time driver that's lightweight, solid around corners, capable of a lot of mods, and can retain its value over time?

A cheap Vauxhall Corsa C with the larger wheel sizes.

Civic, except it wont retain its value over time, especially if you rice it.
What you actually want, a light, capable, safe, and practical DD that can still get respectable lap times if set up and driven properly and sell for nearly what you bought it for: a used honda civic
What retarded initial D fanboys say you need because muh skids: a cheap shit miata or fucksbody mustang

Once a car hits a certain point it'll hover around that price range forever, and further depreciation is only due to damage, poor maintenance, wear, and rice.
If OP is serious about mawds he should have the funds or mechanical skills to keep his car clean adn revert it to stock if it needs to go
If he isn't he should get a corolla wagon

Civic but keep it stock if you want to retain value.

>first time driver
>solid around corners
If you're going to take corners at speeds where this actually matters, you are going to crash it.
>capable of a lot of mods
>can retain its value over time
Mods are generally going to hurt the car's value. Furthermore, you'll be paying out the ass for insurance even if you don't mod it (assuming anyone will even give you a quote) because a lot of first time drivers want a ricebait car with a big aftermarket so they can try to be just like Paul Walker, then in a cruel twist of irony succeed in ways that they had no intention of.
Consider just getting some shitbox that's cheap to insure for now, then trading it in for something more fun when you've got a few years of no claims and are old enough for premiums to drop.
