Welcome to /pog/, a friendly place to talk about all things Porsche! Current, future, or previous owners welcome. if you have questions, one of us probably has answers.

How do I Porsche?
(Prices are in USD and represent a sorted used car.)

>Air Cooled 911?
$20K+ SC
$30k+ 3.2 Carrera
$30k+ 964
$50k+ 993

>Water Cooled 911?
$20k+ 996
$30+ 997
$60k+ 991

>Boxster
$7k+ 986
$14k+ 986 S
$20k+ 987 (+$2-5k for Cayman)
$25k+ 987 S (+$2-5k for Cayman)

Based 944
>$5000 N/A
>$10,000 Tarbo
*Disclaimer: You can buy a 944 for under a grand, but the overwhelming consensus in the community is that sorted cars cost ~$5k... so if you buy that car for under a grand when you're done it'll be around or over $5k. YMMV.

>928
$8k+

>968
$12k+

If you are a regular poster who's car is not included in the OP, drop a photo in the thread and photoshop anon will eventually do his business :)

The pasta:

Want to get an early N/A watercooled 911/Boxster but are afraid of the infamous IMS issue? Well I'm gonna try to change your mind

>What is an IMS
The intermediate shaft has been present on Porsche flat 6 engines ever since the original air cooled 911 all the way up to the 9x7.1 generation 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters
It's used to indirectly drive the camshafts and is in charge of engine timing

>What goes wrong?
The IMS itself is perfectly fine, the problem was when Porsche switched to watercooled engines they needed a bearing on the flywheel side of the engine, and with their infinite wisdom they decided to use a sealed bearing with a lifetime grease
What happens over time to a small handful of these bearings is that the grease dries out and it fails, causing the IMS to throw the timing out of sync and grenade the entire engine in seconds
The bearing on the opposite side is lubricated by engine oil and has never been known to fail

>How often to these fail?
Engines from '97-'99 use a robust dual row bearing that has a failure rate of less than 1%, it's the engines made from '00-'04 that use a weak single row bearing that has a failure rate as high as 10%
But don't worry just yet, general consensus is that if the bearing in your car is faulty it would have failed before 40k miles
In addition the best way to keep it healthy is to actually drive your car like a Porsche should be driven; low mileage garage queens are more prone to failure

>How much would this cost me to repair?
If you have a higher mileage car I wouldn't worry too much, especially if your car has a dual row bearing
Fixes include:
>replacing the bearing with a new OEM part - $100
>IMS Guardian - $400
>replacing the bearing with an aftermarket ceramic bearing - $600
>removing the seal and adding a flange that directly feels engine oil to the bearing - $800
The last option is the only true way to fix the problem, but I personally don't feel any of this is necessary

Got 2 of these exact models on Amazon for 60 Canadian pesos each
https://www.magnaflow.com/products?partNumber=12634

Cost $120 to weld them up including the reducers needed to fit, the 90 degree bends, and the custom hangars with rubber mounts

It actually sounds great now, instead of like an anemic vaccum like it used to, but at the same time it isn't obnoxiously loud either
One thing to note is that there is some very mild droning at 2500 rpm, but there's so little room down there it's not like you can fit a couple resonators

worst case, you don't actually like it, do some cheap and basic mods and flip it for a profit.

Why has Porsche been so conservative with their design language? If you put a 2017 Porsche 911 next to a 1971 Porsche 911 the only real difference in appearance is that the 70s 911 looks downscaled.

I mean shit, I'd love to work at Porsche's design department. Me and a bunch of Krauts drinking and playing cards while die Ingeniueren are toying with turbos and dodging smog inspectors sounds like a blast. All we'd have to do is copy/paste last year's 3D model before der Chef swings by and pretend like we were arbeit macht frei-ing.

Porsche could at least alter it a little bit in a "natural" progression. It's an iconic yet stagnant design. There's no
soul or passion
to it.

The GT-R had such a big leap in style it really made no sense. It looks agressive but in a killer microwave way.

What's the gear ratio for a '99 986 Boxter differential? There's one at a local junkyard. Engine, tranny, and anything electric are already picked clean. I figured a Porsche would have a good rear end.
>>
>>16776515
A 986 has a transaxle, so the diff/rear end and gearbox are the same unit.

Fun fact, non-S models use the 5-speed from a B5 Audi A4 or VW Passat. Good option for anyone who has a 986 with a busted gearbox and wants a cheap replacement.
>>
>>16776532
I'll admit I haven't looked at it too hard. Can the diff/tranny/bellhousing be separated from each other (this is just for idle curiosity now)?

>>16776964
It's all a single unit, you'd have to go with a torque tube setup like the 924/944/928 used for an FR layout.
It's also not that strong and only a 5-speed, the Boxster S used a "flipped" 996 6-speed which is much stronger.

Another strong alternative would be a 6-speed FWD VW/Audi transmission, found in some European B5 Passats and Audi A4s/A6s.
These use a longitudinal engine because they also have AWD variants, but the 2WD transmissions are pretty popular for mid-engined kit cars.

Change your fluid and see how bad it looks. If you can live with it for a while you then you can save up and take it to an Indy.

I assume the process for removing the gearbox is similar to the 911's, you can probably diy it and take the transmission to the shop to save $$. But it will turn into one of those "while you're in there" things and you may spend another $500 on a new clutch ;)

I'm looking into getting into the automotive mechanic trade and learned that Porsche has its own certification program. I was wondering if any certified mechanics could tell me about it. Still not all that impressed with the recording, I need someone behind me recording to really capture how the new setup actually sounds

Well the place I got from last was big pizza but it's this frunk >>16792022

Hard to tell for me as I am not familiar with how your car would normally sound. Can't wait to do my install this weekend, no more cats and inconel exhaust. Gonna have to set up my go pro near this short ass tunnel near me and blast through then grab my camera from some random mounting point.
>>
>>16792166
Yeah our frunks should be the same, not wide enough for an extra large pizza, but a person can fit in there

>how your car would normally sound
lel it doesn't, the stock Boxster muffler is just that restrictive. Literally just valve train noise when the car is stock, sounded like an anemic vacuum

I don't frequent this thread. I am a big Porsche fanatic though since I was young and went for a ride in a 930 turbo convertible my parents friend had.

Does anyone here think the 991.2 GT3 will be a very collectable car in the future?

This may very well be the last 911 to come with a N/A flat 6 and a manual transmission, the thought of that could send the speculators into a frenzy to buy these cars. GT4 syndrome all over again where the demand is so high and supply so low the used examples out price new MRSP

On the topic of appreciating Porsches, I will kill or sell my soul for a 964 turbo

Wannabe /po/ here. What is best for a DD for a 25yo dude living alone with a 15 miles commute, grocery-getting, a bit of autobahn and mostly bavarian/alpine roads?
Thinking of:
>Cayman S 987 post 2009 or
>911 2/2S 997.2.
Pretty set on the Cayman because lol 30-40k€ instead of 50-60k€ but coming from a sedan I'm sceptical about not having at least a 2+2 for reasons. But on the other hand I find the 911 a bit plump when compared to the Cayman, mostly it seems to be too wide to enjoy some sporty driving on tight roads without having to care too much of where that wide ass is.
Whatcha think /pog/? If you own one of those, how did you choose it?

I live in British Columbia, Canada. One of our local Porsche dealers around an hour out of Vancouver had a 993 Turbo with less than 60,000 kilometers, speed yellow with black interior, no stories no bullshit, 2 owner car sold to the dealer from someones personal collection.

Asking price $216,000 CAD. It sold fairly quick too, I was working for another dealer just down the street owned by the same group. I loved getting sent over there cause most the employees there were enthusiasts and were happy to take about Porsches.

>>16808836
Yeah it was my father's old track car from the 70s, I'll fill you guys in with more stuff about it in a couple of days
>>
Is a 944 worth it as babbys first porsche?

Would end up doing most of the work myself out of necessity, are parts hard to find/really expensive like I assume?

Is the car a complete money pit? I understand
>30 year old car
but will I be spending every weekend fixing shit so it will run again.

I'm not going to be like relying on this car but I would like to DD it short distances and if it breaks down I can just take the bus. I don't mind fixing problems as they come up either as long as I'm not going to be fixing head gaskets one week, replacing the clutch on the weekend then dropping in a new tranny next week.
>>
>>16809146
also my q t asian gf says she wants me to be a feminist wat do?
>>
>>16809146
Spend extra on a Boxster, they're more reliable
>>
>>16809146
You have the right mindset. The parts are easy to find if you can wait for shipping, as no where has any porsche parts in stock (even dealers) for the 944
>>
>>16809290
I like 80s cars better than I do late 90s and 00s. The porsche brand isn't that big of a deal to me as much as the era is, I owned an 87 190e and thought it was a cool car so I'm looking into getting another car from that era.

944s always were appealing to me but I was factoring in reliability before and now not so much. Just wondering if I drop 5-10k on a 944 specifically if I will be able to actually drive the thing or should I just move to a different brand.
>>
>>16809861
Don't get me wrong either, I'm not expecting to just buy this car and have it run like a corolla until the wheels fall off. I just want to know in a general sense am I going to be dealing with a money pit/major engine/tranny work or can I just keep up with the fluids and maybe replace a few parts here and there.
>>
>>16809877
Honestly- keep the services upto date and a 944 is a good daily driver. If you spend 15k on it, it's probably a cared for car. Spend less and expect to spend on bringing mechanicals back to spec.
>>
>>16809861
Any 80s car is going to take work and effort, they're just old now days
>>
>>16809861
80s cars are gonna be unreliable regardless of brand

i took a look at it yesterday, it's not quite in as good of condition as i though

it has a bad crack on the passenger side windshield, the front bumper is broke on the bottom, and there are some fuck ups on the paint

ive yet to figure out how the engine is, but it looks like it'll need some work

the interior is pretty beat up too

other than that, the trunks and "hood" open just fine. ill have to refill the tires and see what i can do
