You should be able to lower the machine by modifying the seat (first) then rear suspension (second choice).

I remove the seat on uncomfortably tall machines then figure out if altering the foam will get me what I want.

S51s appear to have rather long rear dampers to suit poor roads. You might substitute lower dampers, or trim the springs (a SMALL amount at a time, say 15mm) with a cutting disc. Even a Dremel will do if used gently, and you can experiment with old dampers until you obtain your desired right height. Ensure your rear tire doesn't bottom on the inside of the rear fender and make sure no wiring can be chafed.

By measuring the diameter of your exposed fork tube (to which they clamp) and the existing bar diameter (to which your controls clamp).

Harbor Freight digital calipers work surprisingly well. Everyone should have at least one digital caliper.

Clip ons look nice but can be quite sucky on the street. Ensure you've sufficient fuel tank clearance after installation. Same with clubmans.

Clubman style bars usually sit higher but have the same riding position as clip-ons. Not adjustable for "swing" in or out like clip-ons.

Everyone should try clip-ons and clubmans and other bar styles because best comfort differs for different people.

Yes, she bought her '82 Shovel new as a young Airman and did everything on it except cylinder boring, valve/guide work and truing flywheels. It had several frame-up paint jobs since she was a skilled painter. Mild custom, 16" apes, S&S carb, points conversion because kick only and stock electronic modules had a "dead" rev or two to protect the electric starter which she removed since their design sucked. She died in 2013 but I still ride it. No idea on mileage other than far over 100k (despite having other bikes) since it had no speedo for most of its life.

My '88 FXR is also well over 100k (despite having too many other bikes). Evo engines are tough and maintainable. I prefer the later Evos with the Denso electric starters which mine has now since I installed a 1997 bagger transmission to add that and get rid of the stock oil tank.

The many Evos I've worked with are at least as reliable as contemporary Jap bikes. They are mechanic-friendly and there are plenty of low mileage examples out there. I recently scored a 1994 FXLR with 38K for 3500 in good shape. That mileage isn't shit for an Evo. I change belts at 50K or when I get a used bike.

About to buy a 1991 CBR250RR (MC22). It's done 70,000km (not miles).
Owner says the previous owner pulled it apart and freshened it up, but isn't too clear on specifics. Has done all his own maintenance.
