I have a TCM that will work if I swap to a 91-93 80e. But my 97 80e has stronger internals. (IIRC they upgraded them in 94, 96, and 99) So I need a TCM from a 94+ 6.5 NA van, or I can go aftermarket. Local yard is parting a 94 P30, I need to call them up and see if it's a 6.5.

>Bought an HX35W because I didn't feel like cleaning the H1C to paint it
It's supposed to spool faster but the shaft assembly feels heavier. Could just be bearings aren't broken in? I'll probably put a wicked wheel in it.

Sup /org/, I have some money coming into my hands soon, and I made the decision to trade in my 4WD RAV4 for something a little more hardcore.

Currently I'm trying to decide between a '04 Tacoma, '12 fj cruiser, '03 4runner, and a '99 land cruiser.

Leaning towards the land cruiser or the Tacoma, but I wanted to see what you guys thought, and what things would factor into the decision(room for improvement, cost of upkeep, part availability, integrity overall, etc.)

They are all stock, Tacoma somehow isn't rusted, is at 130k miles. I live in Tennessee and would take it out probably most weekends for respectable trails, but nothing insane. It would also get used for commuting, but that's not a priority.
The land cruiser is an i6, and in pretty decent condition, 150k. The fj is my uncles and he's used it mostly on pavement 110k. The 4runner has 80k, but has some cosmetic damage on both passenger side doors from sideswiping a pole, as well as being owned by a teenager who no doubt drove it like shit.

Unfortunately they are all automatic, so I'm unsure if that means I should not consider any of them. I drove a manual in high school, but automatic since. How important is it for offroading?

They are all decently priced. Mods would come later, and I'm less concerned about their cost than I am the initial investment. Although if someone has advice for ease of modding that would be helpful too.
>>
>>16750592
The Tacoma isn't much more hardcore. You're just trading off wheelbase for a little more suspension travel, mostly in the rear.

I'm not big on yoters but my vote would be for the Land Cruiser.

There are several things I find worrying about your post.
First is the fanboyism coming from looking at vastly different vehicles that are related only by brand name.
The second is that you consider any Toyota "decently priced"
The third and most important, is that you think automatic is a disadvantage on trails. Automatic is an advantage for the predictability and ease of use on trails. Manual is fun to hoon in but let's be real you don't want to be traversing long trails making use of all three feet...

I'm quite new. Yeah I like toyotas, but I figured it wouldnt matter since they are all in good shape. What I should have said instead of decently price is that I'm fine paying what they're all asking. The manual point was a question from ignorance.

I was mainly hoping for advice as to what would make people decide one over the other, as I am not really informed as to what matters.

Basically, I came in because every time I google offroading shit, it's just blogs/forums from wranglers or videos about mods without a lot of explanation.
>>
>>16750645
Obviously you don't want a greyhound bus but length isn't as important as many here make it out to be. They're just fans of small "cute" vehicles and try to justify it. You can wheel any of them. Buy the one you like the most and make it work. All have shortcomings, but that's what mods are for. I've seen Wrangler guys go on about how difficult a trail is and about how great their Wranglers are only to be followed down the same trail by a crew cab F250 taking it with ease.
Buy one. Wheel it. Gain experience. Use that experience to figure out what you'd like to change about the vehicle. Figure out how to change that. Often those mods you didn't understand in the beginning will start to make sense once you have some context as to the purpose behind them.

My biggest issue with Toyota 4x4s is that for what you'd pay for a stock one, you'd have a pretty good build with anything else. Financially they just don't make sense to buy into the years that most people use for this stuff. Paying $6000 for a Toyota when a comparable 4x4 from a different manufacturer is $2000 because you think the Toyota "holds more value" is absolutely retarded, and yet people do it every day. Ignore the brand. Nothing holds more value than something that is already finished depreciating.

Why lift it more? Low is good for short wheelbase. Want to install bigger tires? You'll need some stronger axles first.

Just skid plate the bottom
>>
>>16752328
Also if/when you upgrade to Dana 60s you can fit bigger tires with no extra suspension lift by trimming the body or buying hiline fenders.

Honestly, aesthetic. I would like it to be a little higher. Eventually going to go to a set of 37s once these tires are done (35s right now) I've got a truss/gusset kit for the D30 in the garage I'm waiting for the time off work to burn in.

I have been tossing around the idea of building up some one ton axles for some time but who knows really. Know a guy selling a set for $600 an hour away from here, deciding factor here is how much I'm willing to dig in and tear apart a '14 which right now isn't very much.

Could run 40s right now without any issues since I cut the stock fenders and run low offset rims other then eventually grenading my front axle...

Use your rav 4 money to maintain both of them for the next 3 years (depending on how "fun" you want the daily)

>>
>>16752409
With 37s you'll eventually pop a rear axle shaft. Unfortunately for you the rear axle is not full floating, so the wheel will walk it's way out once the axle shaft breaks. That's one of the many upsides of 1 ton axles, full float rear, so if you break an axle shaft, which is unlikely, you can still drive out.

With 40s your axles would barely hold together on the street. That Dana 30 won't like 37s at all either. Don't waste money on either stock axle, just save up for the rock jock Dana 60s that just bolt in using the stock suspension setup, they have the brackets already welded on for them to bolt right in. That's the easiest way to upgrade axles, regular one tons are not super expensive to buy, but once you've rebuilt them, regeared them and installed lockers and new brackets to bolt them under your jeep you'll be in at the same price or lower then just buying a prebuilt rock jock Dana 60. Plus then you have to run 8 lug wheels, with the rock jock axles they will use the same stock 5 lug so you can keep running your current wheels.

Unless you're running 50+mph through the desert, SFA > IFS

If you tell someone with IFS that SFA is better their defense is that they don't "need" SFA. But that's moving the goalposts. No one NEEDs SFA, it's just better.
>>
>>16752756
Could I still do 50+ in the desert? As in is the IFS simply better in that case, or completely necessary for safety?

About 1k since I'm still paying off school and I plan to use this as a weekend hoon wagon

What does /org/ think about an off-road miata for shits and giggles?
>>
>>16754283
Will cost around $5000 to upgrade with the appropriate tires and lifts and bumper guards. 1k will not be enough to buy and maintain (especially with the off chance of a used vehicle requiring some fix) and old offroader.
>>
>>16754329

The lift kits I'm looking at for Miata's are pretty steep, I might just stick to a bronco or K5 depending on what's available.

>>
>>16754364
I'd argue that the best offroaders are ones that aren't totaled when you do dumb shit with them even if you're not worried about them. $1500 is a good chunk of money.

put a solid bumper with a stinger on any offroader with rock guards and strong skid plates and that's the point

Hoping to be less of a bitch near mud holes this summer. Did not get M/Ts as this is very much a daily driver and road-trip vehicle.

That's not how it works, that's not how any of this works. A stinger does fuck all for structural integrity and a bumper is is only as good as the frame it is bolted to.

Stingers aren't for deer, stingers are for preventing forward rollovers on steep descents. A good bumper would offer better protection for deer but all it does is transfer energy so if your frame folds from the impact the vehicle is still fucked even if the bumper is still straight. I've seen multiple mostly undamaged aftermarket bumpers pushed into the front of a then totaled truck.
>>
>>16755689
I'm not him but stingers actually help deer go under the vehicle or push them otherwise aside. The way they're shaped and positioned can actually help them brush under them. Otherwise, yeah. Only get a stinger for rock climbing balance when you have a short vehicle.

Or rear ending some SUV and smashing through his rear window instead of his bumper :^)

Great all terrain tire, just keep the tire speed up, gas pedal down while going thru the mud, and you'll be fine. I've used them in icy and muddy off road conditions, did very well for a standard all terrain.

I know this isn't really off road but I figure you guys are the best to ask, maybe. I'm downgrading from a full size chevy to a mid size bc I'only use the bed for motorcycle transportation a few times a year. It's between the frontier and Tacoma 2wd shitboxes. Is the Tacoma worth the general 3-6k extra? I'm looking at a desert runner trim frontier that's a good 4k cheaper than a comparable Tacoma. All my friends who've had frontiers say the are shit and I should just get spend extra and get the taco. Any thoughts would be appreciated again I know this isn't really /org/ but there is no /truck/ and usual truck threads are just filled with trolls.

Why should i care how often russian parts break?
I have never owned a Russian made car.
This as you probably didn't even read in the post you commented on is a soviet made car.
In 1981 it was made for the war in afghanistan but never went so it has been in daily use as transport vehicle at the "Over the horizon" radar in revda.
I have went through every square cm of the car now and nothing has been replaced since. (Except for the usual oil, oil filter etc..)
It still runs like a clock and has far better reliability than the chevy tahoe i used to own (wich ate parts like there was no tomorrow)

AFAIK, the g-wagons are mainly used for CFB support and intracountry training missions. LUVW class vehicles aren't normally deployed by the canadian military anymore (since everything is just taken over by the larger heavy class outside of field support and comms) and i would love to own a surplus one in a couple of years when they start hitting civie markets. not sure if you'd be able to egt the rims, though. considering the whole military contracts specialty makes and all.

Here's a picture of the older MILCOT or what they called the "Milverado"s that are still used and around. Nice wheels too.

Rock guard heavy ones are found more on radio com HLVW vehicles instead. Look for those wheels instead of the light support/com trucks.

Not sure what the MILCOTs are on. But I'm almost sure the I-5 G-Wagens are 24V for com support. I like how Mercedes got the Canadian contract for light vehicles, though. Surprised Ferd didn't take it up like all the regional / city police do.
24 would make owning a civie pretty difficult but worth desu.

I'm heading down to CFB Borden next weekend so I can go bombard the people with tact. questions, lmao. Then we can wank off to truccs.

Hey everyone I dont know if you remember me but this is the guy who brought a suburban for 1400. I think I fucked up buying this cursed truck. Both CV joints ate in very bad shape one of them is actually so bad that the shaft seperated from the joint. The truck has two hundred thirty one thousand miles on it and apparently the rear drums and shoes and everything else would the rearbrakes is original. Also the front and rear differentials and the transfer case is leaking quite badly. And my steering gear box needs to be adjusted to get all teh play out of the steering wheel so simply put I don't think this is a driveable vehicle. I must be cursed to never have something nice
>>
>>16766832
Anyone have a rockauto discount code for this poor bastard?
>>
>>16766832
Drain diffs and t case, refill with gear oil.
Replace CV shafts with junkyard units
Determine if steering play is coming from steering box or rag joint. If steering box, this is a common issue. As long as you can keep it between the lines you'll be fine. If rag joint, replace it.

None of the issues are difficult to fix.

differentials wouldn't be leaking from the cases so the worst case situation is the mating surfaces are leaking a bit or rusted. get new caps. t case same issue. cv replace or eat the two hundred new. same thing with steering box.

>20+ years old

Well, no shit. It's been neglected and that's why it was $1400 and not $4000

>diffs leak
Rear axles commonly leak from the pinion shaft seal. Not too difficult a job for a tech (not recommended for a newb) that doesn't require significant disassembly. Probably knock this one out first since it's easy.

Front diffs on these things have the aluminum housing split into halves and they like to leak at the case-half seal. That requires complete removal and disassembly of the front differential assembly (pic related). It's a big job so I'd probably throw a half-shaft at it so you can use the truck and then monitor front diff fluid levels frequently until enough money is on hand to fix it.

Transfer case is similar in that it is a split case design that likes to leak from the case-half seal so it'll have to come out and be disassembled to be resealed. Probably be good to put a drive chain in while you're there before it develops enough slack to literally eat through the case on the slack side. Again, just watch fluid levels until you've got the cash for a fix.

>steering slack
Find and fix any steering items with any free play first. If it still has steering wheel free play on-center then the box has to be rebuilt (or a rebuilt installed, whatever) because adjusting the sector shaft preload (pic related) doesn't really work. I mean, it will give the feel of less free play on-center but at the cost of the box not returning to center on it's own so the truck won't go straight and you'll have to make continual corrections just to maintain a lane and that gets annoying really quick. You can use a parts store pos rebuilt if you want but Redhead Steering Gears is generally considered to be as good as you can get in rebuilt boxes now.

Thinking about getting a 97' TJ with 88k miles for 5k. Guy says he replaced most ware parts and it looks bone stock, with minimal rust. Should I? Or there's an 01 Wrangler sport for 6k but needs a clutch and has something interfering with the starter. Small lift, new BFG's, snorkle, and aftermarket front bumper. Both have soft tops.

Are you planning on doing things to it? If so, then wait for a modified TJ or YJ. If not, then buy it.

Bone stock TJs normally command more money especially if they're nice without rust. But they have less /ORG/ value, though.

How hard is it to replace a hg on one of these? Or is it worth to replace it? I figure at $500 I can't really lose on it and could probably resell it for what I paid for it. Any ideas?

That's pretty damn cheap and worth the money. They might have some road noise issues depending on the specific make but you wouldn't be worried about that when running 37s.

What model are they?
>>
>>16770074

T/A KO
>>
>>16770103
Yeah they're the budget (younger) version of the KO2s. Still very capable but worth the increase to KO2s. They're louder and also suffer from bad "fuel economy".

However, in your situation, I'd take the cheap hit. Quick search in the onterrible off road store has them for $1550 for the set of four.

Besides the CV joints everything else can be limped along until you get the cash to repair or replace. You've still got a very solid truck considering the price you paid.

I climb loamy-dirt hills once a month for work. With my old Colorado, I would just leave it with the people for them to tow their tractors up but so far they've been paying me $100 more in order to drive up a 50-150m hill. Yes they are a good choice for weekend wheeling/DD duty. Most who have the money get a 3rd gen as it is better in most ways (more power, no headgasket issues, more efficent, better on-road ride, available locker). But the 2nd gen is a solid rig. Torsion bar based IFS is sturdier than 3rd gen wishbone (lower balljoint failure possible). Just make sure the motor is sorted if its a V6. Rust is the biggest problem up north, but out West that is a non-issue.

>>
>>16776647
Taller tires do the same as a taller gear (lower numerically) If you have a well balanced vehicle to start with, shorter tires will give you more effective power since the same work is done to travel a shorter distance, and taller tires will give you better highway fuel economy since the same work is done to travel a further distance. But going to too tall of a gear or tire can hurt economy as the engine has to overcome a greater force due to having less mechanical advantage.

What is you current gear ratio, what size tires did you upgrade from and to, how do you want the vehicle to perform compared to how it performed before the upgrade?

Hell no.

4.80 with the same tire size would be far better for towing than 4.10.

Thanks man <3

That thing is an absolute blast to drive and was an incredible value. I spent $2,500 on it, and it only had 123k on it. phenomenal condition and I love taking it out to these short little day trips out and about in az. It's a dog on the street but in 4x4 low range it's a stump puller

Nice. Hard body so they can take more hits and look better with rock rash than the newer [anything, really].

Old reliables. Picture of close up vehicle?

>>16776692
No. Other way around.

28 inch stock geared at 4.10. Was going to lift it to get some more clearance because of diff hits and got caught on a tree root once. but realised I could go up to 32s without lifting and having minor wheelwell rub. Just forced them in and gonna get lift done in the next month.

So I'm at 4.8 right now. Highway doesn't suffer which is my main concern and city driving took like a 2 MPG hit which I've been otay with recently (expected it when changing up tyre size anyway).
I don't mind too much the slightly higher range offroading because clearance was what i was looking for. Plus this thing will never be a rock crawler which is why I was going to get the heep or samurai.

Also, I meant with all the highway driving I do with my Ranger, it wouldn't make sense to go over 32s. Therefore, I should just get a Jeep/Sammy for fun along with my work Ranger. Sorry, I phrased that horribly, lmao.
