Can some of you statiscucks explain to me this. If government regulation supposed to improve mileage, why can a this 4 speed piece of shit, glued together with fish glue, made so that Hitlers wife had something to drive to the grocery store in, can easily 30 mpg. Yet for modern, goverment regulated, """""""""economical""""""" shitboxes 30 mpg considered an astronomical achievement?!
>made so that Hitlers wife had something to drive to the grocery store in, can easily 30 mpg
22 mpg average actually.
>Yet for modern, goverment regulated, """""""""economical""""""" shitboxes 30 mpg considered an astronomical achievement?!
Low American standards because the bar is set by 13 mpg SUVs. My car gets 40 mpg and it's considered outdated for European standards.
>modern cars weigh more
>modern cars have a bunch of power draining gizmos, like ac, heated seats, the lot
>wider tires?

fuck, i really don't know
if i'm not mistaken though some catalytic converters (three way, i think) have to run richer than usual to work properly. correct me if i'm wrong.

They actually aren't that economical. They average around low 20's MPG. The reason they have a reputation for being economical is because right up through the 1970's, average American cars averaged 8-12 mpg.
Those things haven't been sold in any country bar Mexico and Brazil, since 1977 because the engine couldn't meet emissions. For a 4 cylinder, by modern standards, it's a failure. It's not economical, it can't meet emissions, power output is laughable, and it isn't all that reliable. It's why Subaru swaps into old bugs are so goddamned popular.

Then why do they also double as ovens?
>>16746060
Because 'murrica.
In europe, 30MPH is uneconomical. I can average 30, maybe 35 combined cycle. 50+ highway.

who are you quoting
>>16746060
bugs
>weigh nothing (<1 ton)
>engine is small (1-1.6L)
>terrible occupant safety
modern shitboxes
>weigh 1.5 tons or more
>have twice the displacement as beetles
>have tons of safety features that increase weight (crumple zones)
also anecdotal, but the MPG rating system is not accurate:
>my DD has a turbo 2.4L
>mpg estimate 18 city/24 highway
>gets 30+ mpg on the highway
>gets <10 mpg in the city

You know eurogallons are different right?
>>16747272
Modern cars also have to worry about emissions
So they throw all sorts of engines to choke it off and run hot to burn all the evil gasses shit off.
>>16747289
>Engines
Derp I meant systems
>>16747275
This. Euro ratings are based on 1.2 us gallons.
So a vehicle getting 40mpg would only be rated 32mpg in the US.
>>16746060
but it belches out 1000 times the emissions, tops out at 60mph, struggles up hills and kills you if you crash over 30mph
much better ways to get 30mpg these days. a VW golf will do it and give you 5 times the power
>>16746060
I wish they still made the beetle like this.
I have one of the newest ones and I like it but I love the ride in those old ones. Like driving a high speed go cart.
>>16746060
it has has 30mpg but only barely 30hp
Because emission standards doesn't equal mpg. Then there were crash test standards.
