>>
>>16743628

>>
>>16743634
Do u really want more computers and electronics and possible shit that could go wrong? Vs a bit metal helical spring and some vaccuum tubing? My choke was literally sabotaged by someone (removed the the 3 retaining nuts un did the check coke spring and came just tossed it inside my engine bay) and I put it all back together in like less than an hour and actually really adjusted it which I had been meaning to do. Good luck when a electric system fails

Manual choke
>>
>>16743676
Well

right now the car is moving around the yard only.
I need something that will let me start the duster without a jump start and backfiring starting fluid through the carburetor.
I actually saw flames today.
if i knew how to set up a vacuum choke and if i knew what parts i needed i would try to get that, but i don't know much about choke design.
>>
>>16743691
I literally didn't know shit maybe 6 months ago. Not saying I'm an expert now but there's a plethora of articles and YouTube videos online not to mention books avaliable for sale or download pdf. Shit I even bought some crappy as quadrajet for 15 bucks on ebay Just to disassemble and tinker. It's a hobby that's easy to pickup man
>>
>>16743687
I tried setting up a manual choke but i also don't have the hardware for that.

>>16743703
The fast idle cam is sat fine, i just need to figure out which choke parts actually actuate the butterfly.
I've been googling a lot about this subject but this is one of those topics that people just seem to know and not really document for the younger crowd.
>>
>>16743691
That sounds like your timing is absolutely fucked man. A bad af doesn't seem like it would cause the fucker to backfire and be retarded to start.

Also pour a little had in the intake, it works better for me than starter fluid
>>
>>16743779
>That sounds like your timing is absolutely fucked man.
Nah it's a combination of shitty walmart battery and too much starting fluid.
I got her idling fine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRypV8irKJo

The catch is it needs a jump to get it running but it won't stay running while the battery tender is hooked on, so you gotta jump out right after it fires and unhook the tender before it stalls.
It needs a valve lash for sure.
>>
>>16743819
Mate why not just spend the $60 on a decent battery?

It was a 78 Lincoln Continental. Figured I'd put an engine that doesn't suck into it.
Apparently not now. It wasn't worth enough to insure while sitting in my driveway, I'll have to check my homeowners though. I know it covers the tree removal at least

Power window motor final gave its last gasp. Taking the door panel off and knocking it with a hammer doesn't work anymore. New motor won't arrive in Australia for another week. Makes it hard to drive not being able to wind down the window when it has been hot as balls.only way it is bearable is winding down the passenger's side and taking off the T-tops
>>
>>16744211
Trees aren't really the best thing to park a car under. Sap eventually builds up on the body and makes it nearly impossible to remove if you let it sit too long. My friend has a car with a hood that is now 50% sap 50% paint. He tried just about every cleaner to get it off and the paint comes up with it.

also yeah that sucks. How bad is the damage?

An electric choke is really no more complicated than a manual, manifold heated, or coolant heated thermal choke.

The huge difference is, it uses a stupid-simple electrically heated bimetallic clock spring to open and close the choke plate. Y'know, as opposed to a similar clock spring buried down next to the exhaust crossover pipe, or a similar clock spring being heated by coolant.

My fan belt was squealing like death, i looked at it and it keeps flopping around when going from the alternator pulley to the crank.

is there a fucked bearing in my alternator or something?
>>
>>16746637
>Is there a bearing in a spinning piece of equipment that bears a load
Bruv.
>>
>>16746694
I know there's one in there, I'm afraid it's walking and making the belt looser the more it runs.
There wasn't a peep from it two days ago.
>>
>>16746637
you probably just need to tighten the belt. if its already tight and you hear a grinding noise from the alternator then its bad bearings
>>
>>16747068
I tightened it and it's not squeaking anymore. the bracket is rusty so it might be slowly bending.
The motor shakes too so that doesn't help
You see i have to assume the worst so that i can only confirm my fears or be pleasantly surprised.

Anyway, has anyone used an aftermarket radiator? If so what brand is it and how well does it function?

I put an aftermarket radiator in my 71, I went with an old school copper core, not the modern aluminum junk. I can't remember the brand, I'll look tomorrow, I was satisfied with it. That being said, I've got an 03 Impala I'm working on atm, and I did some research on cheaper alternatives (aluminum). I found that Mishimoto has good reviews, but they're expensive. I ended up with a TYC, which was the cheapest but best rated besides the moto, but is apparently a Koyo, who supposedly make OEM radiators for Toyota. It just came today, didn't even open it yet. I'll be putting it in Friday or Saturday, so I'll report back.

Also, I'm thinning the herd a bit, anyone in the tri-state want a Caddy on the cheap?

In my area the cheap ones are rotten and the decent ones are way overpriced.

https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/6007595428.html

This one is decent, i guess nobody told him to add another 0 but it comes with a 273, not a 350.
>>
>>16748916
A lot of them are cheap Chinese garbage that won't last a year. Spectra is the one to stay away from for sure. Aluminum radiators can't be re-cored, that's why I went with a copper one. It was like 300 something bucks, but it was cheaper than re-coring the original.
>>
>>16748982
I would go OE if i could find an undamaged one for a decent price.
I guess you can't really tell what's going to be shit until it overheats on you or you find metal flakes in your coolant.
>>
>>16748908
>modern aluminum junk

But aluminum radiators are lighter and have more surface area versus copper per thickness.

aluminum is also much weaker per thickness and much more susceptible to corrosion.
also god help you patch punctures on aluminum
>>
>>16749160
They also don't seem to last as long though, albeit cheaper to buy. The original radiator is still in my 79 Thunderbird, while at work we've put new rads in vehicles only 10 years old or so
>>
>>16749237
>aluminum is also much weaker per thickness
I didn't realize the radiator was an important structural element in a unibody or modern body-on-frame car.
Also please explain why aluminum is so prevalent in suspension components and not brass/copper.

>much more susceptible to corrosion.
Copper, zinc, and tin are all a lot more reactive than aluminum.
So don't run plain water in your cooling system and you won't have a problem.

>also god help you patch punctures on aluminum
Aluminum can be welded.

thinner materials transfer heat better, the strength also comes with the perk of more durability from rock strikes and jarring around offroad
and i said stronger per thickness, not lighter.

try external environments, salt plays all kinds of hell on it, copper tends to fare better when exposed to salts.

and whens the last time you welded aluminum?
brass/copper can be soldered or brazed with the most basic of tools without worry of heat damage/ internal crystalline damage of the metal

The Dynaflow relies on the torque multiplication of the converter to get the car moving. It started in high gear and stayed there. You had to manually select 1st.

the motor always seems so revved and I never notice the shift between first and second gear. 0-35~ first gear, everthing else second gear pretty much. the tranny is a piece of shit and I wish I could switch for a manual 4 speed in the future if it ever blows. owner before me, never got it above 70 though, but it gets a little loud at 70 and I dont care to really go past 60mph on the freeway

No the ratio isn't very tall, for a Twin Turbine Dynaflow the stator has two positions, Performance and economy. Additionally there are two turbines that spin at different times. Think of it like a variable stall converter

Think of it as the forerunner of the CVT, but it uses variable elements in the converter to change torque output hydraulically.

Any tips for fixing a flat spot in a Carter BBD? It's just after idle position. Advancing the throttle just a little can avoid it sometimes though. I looked down the venturies, and the accel pump seems to give a steady stream for both venturies.

>There's a difference between unlawfully having the bank credit your account and losing ownership of your vehicle.
Yeah, that's my point losing your vehicle is a completely separate action from depositing a check. There is no contingent on the check about whether or not the vehicle was transferred and banks don't assume fraud the second a check bounces retard.

I'm really in need of some advice here.

I paid $450 for my '73 Nova SS hoping to take on a Summer project (Which is why I passed up a $2000 '69 GTO. I could have doubled my money, but I wanted something I could actually fix. It needed 2 of everything.)

Anyways, here's what it needs:
>A couple small firewall patches
>Lower door skin patches on both sides
>One rocker panel
>Front and rear lower patches on one quarter panel
>Tail panel
>Filler around the rear windows
>Filler around the trunk lining
>Front and rear floor pans
>Trunk Pan
>Engine and transmission

Before I can start any of that, I have to get a new VIN tag for it. Someone stole the original one when they stole the transmission out from under it at the PO's house. My courthouse told me that if I bring them the VIN number and it comes back clean, they'll issue a new tag for it. From that point, I'll have to deal with getting a new title for the car.

I really don't care about fully restoring it. Sure, I could probably do it and have as much in it as I'd pay for a restored non-SS car, but I want a driver.

This is the worst spot I've found on the car, and it really worries me. Can this even be fixed? What do you folks think I should do with this thing? Any estimates on the cost of getting it back on the road?
>>
>>16759528
>rocker rust
>on a nova
It's fucking nothing buddy
>>
>>16759659
A replacement panel is $35
>>
>>16759836
That's the point. It's not like you got rocker rust on a Minerva. You've got rust on a Nova.
>>
>>16759988
Oh, my bad. I interpreted that all wrong. All the rot is in places it's expected to happen, so I can buy cheap repro panels for all of it except the spot in the picture. I'm sure it can be fixed, but it looks costly.
>>
>>16760014
If you're fixing it yourself it is only material cost. It's not like your paying $85/hr shop labor to some retard
>>
>>16760158
I've never welded anything in my life, so I'd actually have to pay a shop. I live in the middle of nowhere in KY, though, so most shops around here are very honest and don't over-charge. I might call around tomorrow and see if I can get a good ballpark on what it'll all cost.

If nothing else, I may be able to get one of my buddies to do it for free, as long as they don't fuck it up.

Dumb question

I've got a fuel pump and I want to run a 3/8 inch line. The inlet of the pump is larger than the outlet. Would I be okay with running 3/8 from the tank to the pump or should I do like a 1/2 inch just from the tank to the pump?
>>
>>16760894
There is no way it's that cheap. The cheapest I've ever found for a 59 Buick was 400
>>
>>16760926
well, the glass is shared by like 3 other cars, aint it? so it cant be that bad.. plus im sure its harder to find glass in certain areas. and in Southern Cali, there are a lot of old cars due to no rust areas
>>
>>16760898
inlet is usually larger than the outlet from fuel pumps due to outlet fuel being pressurized. You don't want your inlet to the pump causing a restriction to flow.
>>
>>16760954
That's what I figured, but then I thought ho fugg what if its a bad idea because you're overloading it and all that fuel is trying to squeeze into a smaller hole. I don't know, just being retarded and overthinking shit

So I'll go ahead and go with the bigger fuel line and fitting for the inlet, thanks senpai
>>
>>16760933
It is shared. But it's a compound curve so it's a bitch to make. In my experience used glass is almost never worth the trouble of getting.
>>
>>16760898
>>16760954
>>16760973
Vaporlock is a huge factor, too. Restriction on the inlet means the pressure drops, and low pressure means a lower boiling point.

Gas boiling in the line=vaporlock.

This is why modern cars have their fuel pumps in the tank, and why you should put that fuel pump as close to the tank as possible.

That, and I had to have a hand wrench sitting on top holding the bolt that the nut is on because it would just spin. And then fall off every 3rd pull on it. Sadly, a breaker bar would've been more trouble than worth because the one I have doesn't ratchet. All that's left to do is take off some other shit from the transmission, drop the crossmember it rests on, and then pull it off. Then I can finally replace the rear main seal and put it all the fuck back together.

I don't even own a compressor. I'm slowly but surely building up a decent tool collection, though. It's been more of a "buy as it's needed" type deal. I actually had a friend show up as I was fucking with this who happened to have an electric impact that could fit in there. It couldn't turn it at all.
>>
>>16768066
That's pretty nuts (no pun intended kek) if not even an impact could turn it, sounds worse than I thought. I figured you could've had a swivel on an extension and just walk the nut out even if it was impossible to turn by hand

I have a Rigid 1/2 inch that is fucking primo, I love it
>>
>>16768265
I think that is actually the exact electric impact my friend had. That one wouldn't fit into the spot, but there was another one that was thinner that was able to get in there. Regardless, it was a gigantic pain in the ass, but it's finally over with. Now I just need to pull off the bolts holding the transmission to the engine and the shift linkage (which is being a gigantic cunt, big surprise.)

I've got two questions for y'all. I did some driving today and when I stopped there was a heavy angel of sulphur. When I popped the hood, I found a faint steak of smoke coming from the battery. The terminals are pretty clean, so I'm aiming the alternator is over clocking the battery, but I'm wondering if that sounds accurate.

My other question is if I buy an alternator for the 300, what are the odds I can use it in a 302

>>16771995
Is that a c4?
>>
>>16772016
AOD.

I've actually had a similar thing happen with my battery fairly recently. I took off both cables and slathered dielectric grease on the terminals and cables after cleaning them up. Try that as a first step. As for the 300 alternator fitting the 302... Maybe? I know off the top of my head Ford had a LOT of interchangeable parts, alternators being one of them. Shit, the alternators out of Tauruses fit the 302 in the Bronco so it's definitely possible. But try the grease first.
>>
>>16772016
Get a cheap multimeter and read the voltage from the alternator, you can get one for 2 bucks from Harbor Freight, a lot cheaper than throwing a part at it not knowing what the problem is
>>
>>16772052
>>16772016
Double checked. The part numbers for the alternators are the same on RockAuto.

>>16772064
Also do this.
>>
>>16769478
That's why Rear main seal is always the last thing to replace. Always do valve cover gaskets and intake manifold first, the head down if needed
>>
>>16772112
I may have jumped the gun a bit, but there *was* evidence of the rear main seal leaking. Plenty of oil leaking from right below it. Doing this also gave me the chance to take care of a few other jobs that were kind of along the way.

I can take a look, but the only thing is I have a new battery after this happened to the last one. So if the issue of overclocking is happening, other than the voltage regulator, what could be?

>>16772052
That's pretty cool. I wouldn't mind one, especially with my 4.11s. I just don't really feel a need to swap out the c6 in this thing. Ideally, I'd love a gear vendors unit but those aren't cheap.
>>
>>16772204
Honestly, I've got a list about a mile long for shit that this truck needs done. Towards the very bottom more in the territory of dreams than anything that'll happen soon, is a cylinder head swap for the GT40P heads off an Explorer or Mountaineer, a new cam with hydraulic roller lifters, a set of Ford Racing shorty headers, and a 6-spd auto trans. I actually found some virtual dyno software that is remarkably accurate which projects that with the set-up I have in mind which is pretty mild, I'll be making about 305 horsepower at 5000RPM and about 358ft-lbs of torque at 3500. The torque curve is essentially flat up until it starts to drop off after 4500. Not insane numbers by any means but way better than the 185hp and 270ft-lbs of torque it rolled off the factory floor with, and WAY better than whatever it's putting down after 28 years of neglect and abuse.

I actually am going to be building one of those. Next chance I can afford it, I'm buying a gt40p motor, then going with an e303, mechanical fuel pump, this intake set, and I've got some bbk 1515 headers. I need to get an HEI distributor, maybe rockers, probably new pushrods and a few other bits and bobs on the list. Aiming for about 310 crank HP.

>>
>>16772204
>So if the issue of overclocking is happening, other than the voltage regulator, what could be?
Engine to body ground. If that isn't good the regulator can't "see" the true voltage in the system and increases duty cycle to compensate which make for the higher than spec voltage.

Old GT40 crate motor with 3 bar GT40's, B303, Performer RPM, 750vac sec Holley that was laying around, $99 Hedman 1.5 inch long tubes, and 4.10 gears went [email protected] in a Capri at about 3100lbs. Dream wheel says that was about 290hp so your estimate is in the ball park I think. That 109mph trap would mean a potential high 11 if I'd had slicks and weren't babying the non-WC T5. The thing came on the cam about 4000rpm and it was like throwing a switch from WaHoo! to Fuck Yeah! and wanted 6000 rpm shifts. If you weren't careful it'd zip right to the 7000 rpm limiter. It wasn't real happy under 1800 or so.

tl;dr good plan!
>>
>>16772377
Hot damn. That sounds like it was a fuckin' blast. Unfortunately, the Bronco is limited to 5500, and I'm not terribly confident in the health of the engine to be pushing it past that. As ludicrous as it sounds, part of the logic behind the dream plan is the dirty phrase: Fuel economy.

I know, I know, it's a 28 year old 5.0L V8 with an ancient transmission behind it, but if I can go from averaging 10mpg to averaging 17mpg as some people have reported, AND get a not insignificant bump in power at the same time? Win fucking win, man. Although, with a bump in power this substantial I may have a hard time with my right foot and lose any fuel economy gained.
>>
>>16772302
That could be it. I'll take a look, and test out the regulator as well.

>>16772332
That really pleases my autism. But it sounds fun. I figure 9:1 compression isn't great, but the motor I called in on did 150psi on all 8 cylinders. It should be fun. I figure I can have fun for a few years on that motor, and down the road when I get some real cash flow going, I'd like to do a 351w stroker with aluminum heads. That's where the c6 I have will be good, that thing will be a torque monster.

>>16772377
Mam that sounds like a fun set up. Last summer I ran a 22.9 @59. I lost to a Prius, and I vow that the next run I have will be in the mid to low 14s. Should be around there with my gearing and the 4000lb ish weight.
>>
>>16772414
Oh, EFI truck? I thought you were talking about a car and didn't read anything prior to #2251.

The heads will give a nice bump no doubt but nothing like a car will due to the limitations of the speed density EFI placing limits on the cam unless you do something about getting a tune. Not that you really want to go for rpm in that application anyway.

What kind of tires is this thing swinging? Around the same time as the Capri one of the guys in the shop had a shortbed stepside 86 F150 and he had 38's(?) on and it was a dog that had poor economy. Swapping in 4.56's changed the truck completely and got a lot better economy to boot.
>>
>>16772477
Right now it's just on 31x10.50s. They actually need to be replaced since they're about 9 years old by now. The treadwear is completely fucked, though. I need an alignment, but I need to fix the play in the steering first, and about a billion other things. The outsides are worn down to the wear bars while the insides of the tires still have a shitton of meat on them. I will *probably* go for P235/75R15s when the time comes. I'm definitely not taking this thing offroading until I get it mechanically sorted. I'm thinking Firestone Destination LE2s when the time comes. Sad part about new tires is that my speedo is almost 100% accurate up to about 50mph with the 31s, so I'd have to get a different speedo gear for the 235s if I want an accurate speedo and odometer. Which I do.

It's definitely not the platform for going for major power numbers, but I'd still like to have a bit more than the dogshit 185 I'm working with now. On the plus side, it sounds fucking incredible. I got it from a relative up north, so it's all rusty as fuck. The tailpipe fell off of the muffler about a month after I got it. Another couple of months and the muffler decided it was going its own way, too. I cut the exhaust so it'd be a clean pipe after both cats and it just sounds so fucking good. I know the factory manifolds are shit, but somehow this thing has just exactly the right sound.
>>
>>16772594
>>16772477
To add on, I actually plan on going aftermarket ECU when everything else is said and done. I know on some you can actually set up multiple maps for fuel and ignition and shit, AND you can have it set up to do it with a physical toggle switch. This is all a loooong way off, though. First I need to sort my oil leaking and then probably roll in new main bearings because my gauge is reading basically none oil pressure once it warms up a little.
>>
>>16772016
if you have an externally regulated alternator, tap the regulator with a screwdriver handle a couple times.
It sounds like the field contact in there got stuck closed.
