My local community college offers riding classes for beginners.
I was considering taking it, then getting myself a nice beginners bike just to get back and forth from school (~10 miles each direction).

I had looked at the Honda Rebel 500, but people said they were very under-powered.
Are they so under-powered that I couldn't cruise at like 55? Is the Rebel a decent bike for beginner? How about the Honda Shadow?

I was just looking for something small, lightweight, and low to the ground (which everything I've ever read said a beginner should look for).
>>
>>16740506
m8 a 125 can cruise at 55
>>
>>16740506
They mostly talk about passing speed and shit.
>>
>>16740506
A rebel 500 should be able to get like 100 mph dude
>>
a google search shows that a Rebel 250 takes 15 seconds to get to 60mph and has a top speed of 85mph. I'd say a 500 would be a tad faster than that
>>
>>16740506
A rebel 500 will have 50hp and 400lbs

That's gonna be about a 5 second 0-60 which is quick
>>
Should I buy a junk bike, and fix it up?

Never touched a motorcycle in my life.

Have slight mechanical experience doing generic stuff on cars.

I think I'd be more comfortable working on something smaller like a motorcycle, and I could fix it up and potentially ride it.
>>
>>16740553
Make sure you can find parts for it.

My XJ550 still doesn't have a gas tank because they're like finding gold bars for less than $200 on ebay.
>>
>>16740553
Working bikes are cheap enough already.
>>
>>16740553
A 2-stroke has less parts and is more exiting to ride. Get one of those if you can.
>>
>>16740506
It''s not that bad of a bike. it doesnt accelerate quickly. get a motorcycle for your needs. i was thinking about buying a Duke 390 for college. for both commuting, fun and i wont die when i go on the freeway with a 125cc

"The driver of a motorcycle or a person riding a bicycle facing any steady red signal, which fails to change to a green light within a reasonable period of time because of a signal malfunction or because the signal has failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle or bicycle because of its size or weight, shall have the right to proceed after stopping, yielding the right-of-way to any vehicle in, near, or approaching the intersection; to pedestrians lawfully crossing the intersection within an adjacent crosswalk; and to any other traffic lawfully using the intersection."

it's legal to run red lights if you're on a motorcycle.

Abrasion, sure, but that's not the thing that wrecks feet. High-top leather sneakers would offer enough abrasion resistance for the large majority of motorcycle traffic accidents, it's mainly the ankle joint and crushing forces the boots are designed to protect against.

Have done touring in 90F+ heat many times. I have never removed and washed a helmet liner. Nor do I have some weird skin infection or odd funk either. If you are really concerned just get a helmet liner/skullcap and put that on then put your helmet on.

This is why people should start on a 125. 300s are way too much power for the average person and this is bound to happen. Look at all these fast 300cc bikes that new riders buy because they want to "grow into" their bike.

Remember, surviving isn't the goal, learning to ride is. Starting on anything more than a 125cc is way too dangerous to justify and now you've wasted a bunch of money because you just HAD to jump instantly to one of those rockets making 42hp. My car makes 48hp and you're buying something way smaller and lighter with that much to learn on and expecting not to get into trouble?

People should be limited to good bikes like the grom which make a much more tame 8 horsepower so they can learn instead of dying. I'm glad you're alive anon, but I hope this is a lesson. At least now since you crashed you should be safe getting a leaderbike.

80cc
125cc
250cc single
250cc twin
300cc single
300cc twin
250cc 4cyl
350cc single
350cc twin
400cc twin

500ccs is already WAY too much power for a beginner, and a 600cc bike? Would you start your child driving in a formula 1 car?

Nobody can handle that amount of motorcycle. You should start on a 125cc and all you need is a 250cc ptwin. Anything more than that is simply too much for the street or any normal person.

How do you stupid americans even advocate to start on those death rockets? It takes at least 30 years of riding daily to build your skills up to the level it would take to handle one of those monstrosities.

Honda PCX 125, one of the best scooters you can get

But I have a serious question about the bike i am going to get, the CBR125

Is there any major difference after 2008 in the models? I know that 2007 they started building them with fuel injection , but is there any real benefit to getting a more modern one?

There is a big jump between 50 and 125, and a huge one to 300

a 50cc bike can't make highway speeds, a 125 can without really giving you too much speed to allow for hooning. a 300 is capable of going proper fast and is a LOT less forgiving compared to a 125.

except nobody is saying any of that, stop trying to reduce arguments when you can't argue against them.

A 125 has a top speed of between 100 and 120 kph, a 300 has a top speed of 190. It is a very bad idea for somebody new to biking to be able to ride a bike well over the speed limits.

a 50cc can only reach about 60kph which does not allow for highway use so is not fit for purpose as a real commuter in the same way as a 125

Ligher bikes are also easier to handle and are far more forgiving to beginners with poor throttle control and handling.

I actually think there's real merit to this discussion from a wider societal view.
If, instead of a screaming metal death machine, we stuck teenagers on shitty underpowered scooters; they would start their driving career with better situational awareness.
At a reasonable age, open things up to smaller shitboxes and highway capable bikes. Then at consent make whatever vehicle available.

Along with stringent license testing, both car and bike culture could be made much safer. And the proliferation of crappy bikes restores a pyramid shape to the market. More capital for supersport research. (Further advancing tech used in all sizes)

>>
>>16743097
Just because the bike has the capability to go fast doesn't mean it will on its own. No matter what it comes down to the restraint and maturity of the rider; if a learner decides it's somehow intelligent to either:
A) purchase a high-displacement bike and rip around on it right away, or
B) purchase a less-powerful bike but still think it's intelligent to ride beyond his/her limits
then chances are they're the type of person that would find a way to get themselves hurt or killed on a 50cc too. Either way, blame is on them and it's what they get for not realizing the excessive danger they're putting themselves in.

It's common fucking sense to know that maybe you shouldn't rip down the neighborhood at 120mph on your 1000cc race bike you bought cause "It's totally gonna pull mad pussy bro"

Keeping the original shock isn't neglect. Keep it rideable but I wouldn't bother spending money on upgrades. When you can afford an upgrade, buy another used bike in whatever variety you want. Then sell your GS to another beginner on Craigslist because it's objectively the best beginner bike.
>>
>>16743272
you're only cucked if you let something intimidating stop you.

Manual bikes are intimidating, still getting one
>>

I think im overthinking this.

I handed washed it, but it'd prolly be fine on gentle and letting it air dry.
If you still have the booklet that came with your helmet, it'll tell you how to remove all the junk and put it back.

kys cuck, no clutch means not a bike.
>>
>>16743273
I don't think that dude has a 600. He said he's saving for an FZ6.
>short gearing is a good thing on a 600
It allows you to get into the meat of the power slightly earlier but once you're at 40mph+ it really doesn't help any. What sucks is the gear ratios on 600s are super close so you have to deal with 6000+ RPM the whole time you're on the highway if you ever just cruise along at 70+ MPH. It only gets worse when you gear it down.

Its not annoying.
Just cruising away from a stop ill get to 3rd before the end of the intersection, but you don't really think about it.
First gear is the only wierd one, tops out around 35mph, second I can ride up to 60 something.
But honestly you get used to it. No biggie.
>>
>>16743298
Bikes like that are pointless since they don't meet the other requirements required for 125cc babbies. So you end up with a bike not legal for beginners and useless for experienced riders.
>>

You're seriously over thinking it.

It's not too bothersome, the only transmission thing I don't like is that the shifter and brake pedals are so close to that l the peg and my feet are so big that someone's the shifter cog doesn't reset so it's as if I'm stuck in the same gear. I just have to be conscious of fully moving my feet down.

Use 500 grit to sand down through clearcoat to paint, repaint with black, then wetsand to blend with 800-1000 grit, and clearcoat.

Then just even it all out by wetsanding with some 2000 grit.

looks like the paint is under the clear coat so I doubt I can just cover it up. It also appears to be a repainted fairing based on some red showing through where it's scratched and cracked elsewhere.

Fug.
What kind of paint to use? Normal spray paint or that super expensive "automotive" paint? Will this retain a glossy finish after I sand and repaint it?

Use 2-stage paint and clearcoat otherwise it'll come out shitty. Rustoleum is garbage and I wouldn't recommend for something that big.

It will be matte-looking after you finish the final sand. You need to buff with compound and swirl remover to get gloss. DO NOT WAX IT for at least a month after you repaint.

With that said it may also just be painted on top of the original coat, which really means just sanding it off and re-clearcoating.

with all of this said, you could just get an aftermarket set of fairings from the chinks on ebay for $150. With the paint and sandpaper I'd ballpark maybe $40 but a lot more time and effort.

Your money and time, your choice.

The fairings are looking really rough anyway. I don't need it to look perfect. I just want to get that logo off that the previous owner painted on it. Partially because I think he might still live in town and probably still has a key to it so I don't want him to recognize it and take off with it.

>chink fairings for $150
Already looked at that. It's about $300 for a set and I don't have much money to spend right now anyway. I guess I'll start with sanding and see what I end up with.

Also not sure what 2-stage paint was but I googled it and it's rather expensive.

>>16743525
I get the feeling it's just an airbrush on factory paint senpai. You should be able to sand down through the coat and just clearcoat over the top. Worst case if you go buy some cheap rattlepaint from autozone or pepboys for a few areas where you might've gone through the basecoat it's not a big deal.

Otherwise you could go to an actual bodyshop and ask them about doing the above. I doubt they'd charge anything over $200.

It's a supermoto, very hoonible.

Highway rideable, yeah, it'll cruise at 70, I've gotten it to 92, but that was super loaded with myself, top case full of shit, backpack, side bags, total weight including myself was roughly 270 pounds, nearly as much as the bike weighs alone.
