Are BF Goodrich tires really the only tires worth buying? I tried Cooper Discoverer (heavy, poor offrooad performance, moderately durable), Silverstone MT117 EX (light, soft, thread got easily damaged by stones), Dunlop MT2 (same issue as with MT117), Federal Couragia MT (expensive for taiwan tires, thread life is a joke).
Last year i bough slightly used BF Goodrich MT KO2 and so far i am blown away by their combination of durability, road noise and offroad performance. I don't think i will ever look at any other brand of tires.

>>
>>16738245
Depends on which Cooper Discoverer you chose. The new ST MAXX is on par with KO2 performance, but really adequate pressures are more effective than a Trivial tread pattern change between a different All Terrain.
Really, in terms of strength, longevity and capability, to can't go past the four big American brands BFG, Cooper, Mickey Thompson and Goodyear, although General is emerging as another big player gaining a lot of critical acclaim for their Grabbers.
>>
>>16738245
Or if you're talking BFG Mud Terrains (which are "KM2"), then the STT MAXX is the competitor, although I've never sampled the Cooper mud tyre, the Mickey Thompson MTZs are at least as capable and durable as the BFGs,my choice between these two would come down to price.
>>
>>16739042
And that's why you shouldn't let diesels idle cold for such long periods. Always apply a light load after a couple of minutes of idle.

Generally you are right, but this truck HAS to idle for 5 minutes minimum before I can put it at 1k rpms, and it's tstat doesn't open for 10 minutes under driving conditions. Also top rpm of 2600. All that said, the engine in the deuce is picky as shit and even warming it up properly is a bitch. I do it cause I love it though... otherwise I would swap it for a Detroit in a heartbeat.

Well, to all you naysayers out there... I got it back!!

After being stolen for like two weeks, OPD located the Jeep about a block away from where it got a parking ticket about a week earlier. Not chopped, or gutted or damaged at all. In fact they took nice care of it and parked it quite neatly. Still worthless dead cunts though

Also OPD decided not to call me, even though they located the car on a holiday (last Monday) and I could have been there in fifteen minutes. They just towed it. Cost $330 to get it out, but I'll be disputing it because they were supposed to call.

I dunno

Overrated; sure. A lot of folks seem to think that, because they sall "ALL TERRAIN" it means that they're some hardcore mud tire that'll make you able to climb mountains

Bad tires? Not really. They can perform quite well on a wide range of surfaces, and they are easy to modify in terms of siping and studding.
Decent at most, master of none

Thats debatable. I was talking about MT anyway. A lot of people agree that BFG MT tires are the best all terrain tires. Not too hardcore to be uncomfy on pavement and perform well in mud.

About 60000km, it has a 22 to 1 compression, and if it didn't it wouldn't fire. They are just known for being bizarre engines as they are designed off the 1930s white tractor engines, but then cranked up 40% in compression. I am having the fuel system checked out soon as one injector is mayne acting up, but I think it's actually fine. It was rebuilt this year for head gasket failure.

Can't comment personally, but an acquaintance within our Montero club changed his last pair of STTs at 70,000km rotating between four. That's pretty commendable for a mud terrain, and exactly what I'd expect from either the BFG and Mickey Thompson MTs. But if they didn't work for you, I'd either get another set of BFGs, or try a set of Mickey Thompson MTZs or Goodyear MTRs.
The Silverstones you mentioned (and much like the Simexs they copy), as you said, are an extremely soft compound, but they're more of a competition crawler tyre than a durable mud terrain and not really a direct competitor.

Thanks anon. I submitted the claim and the affidavit to insurance and I was just waiting to hear something. I'd been trawling the local Craigslist ads for clean manual XJs ready to fight back when they would inevitably try to tell me my car is worth $1,300 minus deductible.

They didn't really damage it in any obvious way, though I'm gonna have a mech check out the suspension and transmission tomorrow to be sure. The ignition is fine, I'm pretty sure you can start it with a flat head. My key pulls right out even when it's on.

Not sure how they stole it. I lock it every night and there were no broken windows. They may have tripped the bar inside the door with a coathanger or some shit. I went out and got the biggest club you can get at Oreillys so hopefully it won't happen again.

Just gonna drive for now but wanna offroad soon. Still haven't done that since I bought it last year...

You'll find a consumer Kamaz far from what the rally truck is. As for comparing said Kamaz to something like an NPR Isuzu or 3 tonne Canter, that comes down to what sort of size and capacity you require for your setup. There's plenty of other more accessible Western World options to a Kamaz like M.A.N. or even Leyland DAF GS45.

Not the getting in that's the issue. I'm more curious how it was started after they got in. I think one of the YJ guys can actually start it without a key so they get more and more worn down as time progresses. Such is the shitbox life. Also at least you don't have to fight the insurance people anymore. That's always the biggest pain in the ass.

Take some pictures of it on dirt when you get the chance. Good capable vehicles, they are.

I just hope it wasn't water in the air intake. Would make sense with the firing sequence, though. Hmm.

One should be fine in a V6 to drive on a misfire. They'll just get horrible gas mileage, starts, and risk losing power to other cylinders. In a diesel, if the air compressors short out, that could be an issue.

yeah, the chrome is to balance out the truck. I have black bumpers which are pretty monolithic plus the rest of the trim is chrome so i thought it matched, but w/e

the tires are great and have served me quite well. much much better than the general grabbers I used to run on pretty much all fronts.

my only complaint is expense, they're kinda pricey even for 35" E ratings.

Those called "7.00" in Japan. Made almost specially for Jimny. In standard size they would be something like 205 95 r16
They are pretty lightweight even though they are 8PR. I actually sold them, pavement driving and braking on them was kinda flimsy.
These are Dunlop MT2, there are better 7.00 tires - MAXXIS M8090 Creepy Crawler, kinda expensive though
Basically japanese need them to have higher clearance while keeping sheels inside wheel arches, something with their road laws.
Switched to 235 70 r16 BFG MT, lower clearance but better on road.
Those guys who go more hardcore usually put 235 85 r16 on their Jimnies. To do so one would need lower final gear and trimmed wheel arches.

Actually they are nooooot so good in mud... They would be great if they had snow thread for winter, because narrow winter tires are the absolutely best. In mud however moderately fat tires are more preferable also they should be high enough to let you deflate.
With my current 235 70 16 i can't deflate much, if i do i'll lose clearance.

Taynger is actually really fucking hideous and i'm surprised you people agreed to riding two suicides just by looking at this thing". You haven't seen the back Kota cap or the mummified steering wheel );
If she could speak, she'd tell me to kill her right now. Or like you said: get a lift kit (which I have a 3 inch front on the way btw).

I didn't know the Silbers came new style all the way back in 2007. Nice that you got them before they started to really double down on the huge curves and oversized front. And the winch bumper makes the front grill look a lot more natural as whale. I also have a back toolbox which I swap out for work needs in the bed. They're great for keeping water cool in the summer.

i am from the US and yes that is partially true.
we have a lot of private property owned by civilians here instead of the government, so if it is not public land then no you cannot drive on it.
we have thousands of trails and plenty of places to explore though so its not really "designated off road areas"
there are lots of forests you can just go through wherever you like but there are also parts of the country that are restricted.

Not sure what you mean by that. Jimny has the same ... construction as Wrangler, solid axles, frame, transfer case...
If you are asking about engine.... well it's pretty dead under 3000 rpm, but really furious from 3500 to 6000. As furious as it can be or course. It's always better to go pedal to the metal in mud, it's light and lack of power is not that noticeable.
But many guys are swapping other engines. 1.0 turbo (from suzuki wagon r solio) (105 hp), 1,5 n/a (from sx4) (104 hp), 1,8 (from liana) n/a. Some other engines too, mainly toyota ones.

But basically you can have a lot of fun with standard 660cc turbo engine. It allows you to cruise at 60 - 62 mph on the highway. When offroad you just switch to lower range and it's usually enough. You can keep final gear and transmission stock to wheels up to 31". And don't forget that Jimny on 31" is far more capable offroad than any other suv on the same wheels. When you get to 33" you are almost superior to any other suv. Some even put 35" but that requires some serious modifications (engine swap, axles from Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and transfer case from Samurai)

Seems good for your porpoises. Don't need mudders since you look like a S-E USAian anyway. Put yourself on the map, silber:
https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=2389619

Also! Easy for you to say - yours is at least attractive from all angles. The funny thing is that Taynger wasn't a fucking autist before I got to her. She's a 2010 model second last year before discontinued and was rolling fine until I forced 32s down her throat without lift and put that shitty kota cap on her. Oh lord, yeah. She'll be ready for Spring.

>>16744024
River crossing today (>>16742081) was a bitch because of the fear of stalling or stuck. I had JUST cleaned out the little bearings to make that inscessant whirling sound go away. But the second you change gears or go into neutral when mudding / river crossing, water gets lodged in there forever and you're stuck until you can take apart this.

Also note: rock climbing without a second foot or cruise control that isn't tuned to operate at any speed.

Also another note: hill climbing training. You think manual hill starts are hard in traffic you gotta try preventing clutch rub whilst climbing a muddy/rocky hill in manual.
Expert mode: 2WD S-10 without crying

Manuals are still loads of fun and I wouldn't trade her for the world (but I would buy an automatic bronco/ramcharger over a manual one desu)

Not sure if i got you right... As for jimny, it's getting around 20 mpg average driving at 90 - 100kmh. But the thing is you would not want experience 140km/h on lifted Jimny. 125 is scary enough. Though 100 is pretty comfy.
And if you meant that Wranglers guzzle fuel... Well... I would not be so disappointing, it's a fun vehicle after all, not average shitbox to get you from a to b.
Though i don't have another car at the moment so i have to keep Jimny moderately stock.

I'm joking and drunk, friendo. And yeah, the older Wranglers (especially lifted on larger sized tyres) are horrid on gas. They're just like a flying cinderblock. You can daily drive them if you live in a city or a suburb though. I know many people who do.

"North" Ontario (above the Lake Superior) actually makes up like 90% of the land of Ontario but has 5% of the population of the province. The other 95% live within the rest of the 10% of land.
The forests are also thin there with larger trees being the primary component and due to the rolling hills, they are mainly all infertile, clay land owned by the Crown.
This means you can drive, shoot, and shit on this land all you want. If there's no path, you can always find one carved out by a dried up stream or just through the trees.

As said. Steer clear of HOA and most apartment complexes.

Also I think the unauthorized people in residence is in reference to the fact that most people's lease agreement states they can't have anyone else stay for more than a certain amount of time, so people's roommates are required to be on the lease as well.

You're the Army guy, right? Sounds like a classic case of dependa.

I swear, half the married guys in my unit have their wives' hand around their balls.
This one dude is always talking about deploying, field ops, etc. Saying we need to do more PT, qual on weapons, wishes that we "went out there and did stuff". For reference, we're fucking AF network techs. Finally asked him today about why he didn't join the Marines or Army if he wanted to eat shit and shoot guns.

>"Oh I wanted to join the Marines, but my wife wouldn't let me"
What the fuck. Don't join the AF and then complain that it's not the Marines.

I've driven the truck for probably 15000 miles in all conceivable driving conditions since I bought it and I've never felt like I was going to spontaneously lose control. I replaced the front shocks when I did the ball joints. Normally I'd just do the shocks but I'm planning getting fox 2.0 shocks for about 300 dollarydoos and since I'm planning on wheeling it in a couple weeks and can't afford both I have to pick one. The thought of crossmember/oil pan damage is appealing.

>>
>>16749178
It's not made to be driven below 2500 rpm, no torque there. It's made to be driven 2500 - 6000rpm. There is no point of torturing high rpm engine with driving at low rpm. It's even harmful.

Not that guy, but what sort of engine does your Jimmy have? If it's the 1.3, it has absolutely no problem cruising around at 2000 rpm. Just don't lug it.
A friend of mine had one that would frequently do better than 8L/100km, which works out close to 28mpg.

>So you picked high center
Nope, I picked to lift a wheel slightly, putting more traction on the wheels remaining on the ground.
While the idea of "more articulation" is better, it's a completely useless metric in measuring offroad capability without looking at how the suspension applies the vehicles weight across the tires.
Remember that just because a wheel is touching the ground, doesn't mean it has enough weight to apply any meaningful traction, and letting the body settle can, and usually does take what ever useful weight away from the side that would've otherwise offered drive.
>Parking isn't the point.
That is exactly the point, to appeal to the armchair offroaders looking at Patterson's magazines.

Having a wheel on the ground means that there is SOME weight on it. It may not be enough for traction, but is enough for stability. Stability offers control and predictability. Control and predictability increase capability.

A small weight shift with four tires on the ground, and the suspension absorbs it, slowing the vehicle. A small weight shift with one tire off the ground, and the vehicle essentially starts a rotational free fall until that tire hits the ground. The momentum gained during this can (and often does) lead to rollovers.
>That is exactly the point, to appeal to the armchair offroaders looking at Patterson's magazines.
That wasn't in a Patterson's magazine.
>>
>>16749585
>Having a wheel on the ground means that there is SOME weight on it.
Yes, I said that.
>may not be enough for traction,
And that's the problem. The weight it would take away from a tyre that could otherwise propel the vehicle, but may not not be able to.
>but is enough for stability.
Not having drive also aids this stability. And stability and predictability and capability are not a constant as you're trying to describe.
>>
>>16749676
10lbs for force is plenty enough for stability. 10lbs isn't going to affect the other 2-3 tires traction, especially considering it would be divided.
>>
>>16749585
>That wasn't in a Patterson's magazine.
And I wasn't implying it was. It's an analogy for an armchair offroader who has no means of measuring capability other than looking at some staged photos and some arbitrary angles.

Capability itself is not linear. Any system you setup to measure it is going to be arbitrary. Arbitrary measurement is more accurate than not having a measurement.

Calling everything arbitrary is not a stance of any meaning. What point are you attempting to prove?
>>

If this is taynigger thinking his ranger would drive straight over that he's a fucking retard.

>>16749828
>Capability itself is not linear.
Absolutely.
>Any system you setup to measure it is going to be arbitrary.
Not necessarily, unless it's purely measured by what you see in a still photograph.
>Arbitrary measurement is more accurate than not having a measurement.
No it isn't. Just because you say it is, doesn't mean it's so.
Point is, an IFS vehicle is more than capable of traversing the windrow depicted in the photograph this conversation originally stemmed from.
>>
>>16750402
>Not necessarily, unless it's purely measured by what you see in a still photograph.
Yes, necessarily. Taking a measurement in person and and taking a measurement from a photo/video does not change how you define the unit of measurement being used or what is being measured. The existence of the picture or whether or not it was photographed is entirely irrelevant to the discussion. I don't know why you choose to keep moving the conversation to center it around the picture. I'm guessing it's some sort of poor attempt to move the goal posts and divert attention.

>No it isn't.
Yes, it is. If I choose to make up some arbitrary measurement like length in pepsi bottles, "5342 pepsi bottles long" is more accurate than simply saying "long." Even saying the object A is longer than object B is more accurate than just calling them both long or both short.
Calling any sort of comparative measurement arbitrary is quite misleading. Measurement systems start life as arbitrary comparisons with numerics. Of course comparisons can still be made without numerics. Take for example a small sphere and a large sphere. You can tell by looking at them that one is larger than the other even if your measurement is "arbitrary" since you don't know the actual volume of either and have not measured them to a numeric value. Take a picture of them, and you can accomplish the same thing. The picture doesn't affect anything and there's no reason to focus on it.
>>
>>16750471
>The existence of the picture or whether or not it was photographed is entirely irrelevant to the discussion. I don't know why you choose to keep moving the conversation to center it around the picture.
Look, you fucking idiot. My first reply; >>16743405
>Park on a staged obstacle for a stationary photo opportunity?
That was my point all along. Then you cried about how you were talking about capability, in which I can confidently say my example contradicts your claim. And now you seem to be trying to pull it back to an arbitrary measure once more, which was my point. Without more information, your measure is arbitrary.

So to plant your goal posts back in one spot, what are you talking about?
a) ifs can't traverse the example obstacle
In which case you'd be wrong.
b) ifs can't achieve an arbitrary measure of articulation
In which case we agree.
Which one is it? Without the mental gymnastics please.
>>
>>16750510
>Which one is it? Without the mental gymnastics please.
There's no mental gymnastics involved. You're the one going on about the picture as if the picture somehow has any impact on the vehicles involved or what they can do. The picture doesn't matter and never did. That's why I'm trying to figure out why the fuck you keep going on about it.

Articulation can be measured numerically, it is not arbitrary by any definition of the word. Stop calling everything arbitrary.

Now you're trying to argue without making any points or counter points. That's next level mental gymnastics trying to get this involved without a platform to stand on.

You can't be proven wrong if you just combine words in a way so as to form a sentence without it really meaning anything. But you know this already. That's why you're doing it. You're experienced in arbitrary mental gymnastics, I'll give you that.

>>
>>16756190
I addressed the scenario in the picture, and nothing but. You maintained that:
1. The scenario in the picture was entirely dependent on the picture being taken and published in a magazine (which it was not)
and
2. That seeing visual evidence of what the vehicle is cable of (in the form of said picture) leaves no way to compare it's capability to that of another vehicle, because apparently some information important to measuring the capability of said vehicle in said picture is lost within the transfer of photons to the rods and cones in our eyes if they are first recorded to digital media and shown again, even if what we see is the same as if we were there and there were no picture, which ties back into point 1 is mental gymnastics to start with.

>You maintained that the scenario in the picture was entirely dependent on the picture being taken and published in a magazine
No I didn't you fucking idiot, I implied that measures without any other information are arbitrary and and on their own are only of use to appease armchair offroaders who have no other idea than what they see in Patterson's (just to name "a" example) magazines. It is an analogy, not an accusation. I have already pointed this out earlier you shit head.
>That seeing visual evidence of what the vehicle is cable of (in the form of said picture) leaves no way to compare it's capability to that of another vehicle, because apparently some information important to measuring the capability of said vehicle in said picture is lost within the transfer of... bla bla bla bla
That's the point, and where it started here with this shit head >>16743249
Are we becoming clear?
>>
>>16756240
>No I didn't you fucking idiot, I implied that measures without any other information are arbitrary
What other information do you need to stop calling them arbitrary as if that it's a even a stance to take. The entire argument that you're leaning on doesn't mean anything.
>use to appease armchair offroaders
armchair offroaders have no idea what they're looking at. The people that do know what they're looking at can look at a picture like that and get an idea of some of the specific capabilities of that vehicle relative to their own experience and observations with their own vehicles or acquaintances' vehicles on or around similar obstacles. The fact that you think the contents of the picture doesn't say anything only shows that you lack the experience to make a valid comparison between that and something else without being fed hard numbers.
If that's too much for you to comprehend, think of it as handing someone a socket that isn't labelled. Someone experienced will be able to narrow it down to one or two sizes just by looking at it or holding it. Someone that has no idea what the fuck they're looking at (the equivalent of the armchair offroader in this analogy) would ask you how the fuck he's supposed to know what size it is and blabber on about how without a number on it or numbered sockets to measure and directly compare it to, it's all just arbitrary sizes. That's what you're doing. You're projecting your lack of experience on others.

>Are we becoming clear?
Given the fact that you're still going, I'd say we're as clear as lead.

And now you're trying to convolute my definition of the arbitrary term "armchair offroader" whilst trying to sound legitimate! You can't make this up.
I'll add, I strongly disagree with your idea of what makes an armchair offroader (my idea of the offroad equivalent of a bunch racer) and sounds like you're describing a complete layman, someone who wouldn't pick up a generic offroad magazine in the first place. But then at the risk of creating anothwr arbitrary tangent, I'll leave it at that.
