Background:
Had experience with GM (305/350), Nissan/Honda/Toyota. Mostly older vehicle, know timing belt and basic maintenance well.
What is good beginner BMW? I heard BMW will not cost more than Honda (Honda need more often care/parts are cheap, BMW need to replace part at correct time/expensive but last longer)
I just did coolant reservoir and o-ring replacement for my friend's 325ci and to be honest is not that hard, I never had BMW before so ask for experienced BMW fag what should I looking for.
1) Manual
2) Easy to work on (If PT cruiser is around 8, regular Honda is like 3, what is BMW's number?)
3) Longevity? BMW part last longer-True/False?
4) My budget is around 5k, E30/E36 then replace basic parts like suspension/ cooling system, oil pump/belt etc.
Thank you.

Literally this
Are you gay op?
>>16734939
All lies by BMW fanboys. German cars are far and away the least reliable, and cost more money more often than literally anything else. Get a Super Beetle if you're desperate for something German to round out your collection. Otherwise, avoid them all like the plague.
Have a 98' 328I automatic myself. Bought it at 90k miles for 3k. Within the last 24k miles it has cost me another 3k. It is about to cost me 3k more for a full repair after overhating at 115000 miles. Its fun as hell to drive though, and if I could have gotten it as a manual I would have. Havent replaced any major parts myself, but it seems that most things would require you to remove the engine to get at them, so It probably isnt that easy to mod. You can definatly get decent looking and fun to drive car for under 5k though.

Never touched a BMW, that is why I had to ask.
Of course, people on craigslist let an old bmw go for cheap shows how expensive to actually fix it. I am considering:
Manual
Something nice
Lexus is on my list, and yes is way better than BMW.
I drove my friend M30 BMW, and that makes me want to try one.
>>16735025
This is gold.
I am not planning to mod, mostly fix upper and just drive it.
Interior and design of old e30 are just purely classic.
For 5k budget what should I get? I am moving to Tacoma/WA soon, plan to get a project car there. I have brand new car as my DD so I can fix cars.
Thanks again

this is generally a big misunderstanding
german cars are reliable in the sense that there's always shit wrong, but they will always, ALWAYS limp home/ to the dealer
when american cars go wrong, shit hits the fan and you're fucked.
and OP, don't get a BMW.
even 316i's are expensive to fix. Doesn't compare to japanese cars in any way. They deffinately drive a lot nicer though. You fall in love with the damn thing and don't mind spending your money repairing it.
>>16735109
>even 316i's are expensive to fix
Yeah if you can't wrench
>>16735118
Nope
parts are still very expensive.
on the M44 you have to replace the whole cooling system at around 85k miles. Requires new radiator, hoses, waterpump, etc.. a whole 800 bucks Then don't forget the shock absorbers and other suspension bits that are ~170 bucks each.
shit aint cheap.
>>16735118
This. Pre-2000 bimmers are very easy to work on and parts (while not abundant locally) aren't actually that expensive.
Don't be a tard and ask /o/ to make up your mind for you. Browse enthusiast forums for whatever brand/model you're interested in and see what kind of issues actual owners face. Look at parts stores and catalogues and see how much regular shit costs. 4chan is not for research.
>>16735109
my e46 330d is still going strong. never really had particularly serious issues, aside from replacing parts that wear out over time like turbo and injectors, pumps. now you can try to bullshit that a 1982 civic done 800k miles never had a pump or injectors replaced but its bullshit.these things wear out.
>>16735134
most I found easy to work with is E30/E36
>You fall in love with the damn thing and don't mind spending your money repairing it.
This sounds like my EX, thus, my ex.
OP out.
>>16735131
Ehh, I'm spoilt. Junkyard parts are really cheap where I live
>>16735025
>german cars least reliable
are you a retard or you just dont know much about cars?
1998 328is
then go here and get their electric fan shroud with integrated coolant tank, and their water pump, and replacement cooling hoses
