I have a question for the Toyota nerds. Would it be possible to swap the 2009+ Corolla to IRS using the rear suspension from the Scion iM/11+ Scion tC/Toyota Corolla iM?
>>
Are colder spark plugs a meme? I've read tjat putting in a heat range colder spark plugs is a good idea if you're increasing power, but both me, and my friends Mazda just got a low idle misfire after a month or two.
>>
>>16721426

They're on the same platform so that's why I asked. For all we know, the rear suspension subframe for the IRS bolts right up.

Thoughts on a 2nd gen GS300 for a DD
>>
>>16722335
They're cool, get a GS400, 1uz's are heavenly and I'm pretty sure they weigh less than a 2j.
>>
>>16722335
Comfy. If you want to go fast get the v8
>>
>>16722332
A similar swap is possible on the GM J-body Cavalier. The IRS from a Pontiac Grand Am, Oldsmobile Alero and Chevy Malibu bolts right up, but the links to each side need to be shortened by an inch.

Similarly, the 2012+ VW Beetles have a similar ability. base models get the twist beam while upper models get the IRS from the GTI, and all with the same floorpan.

So it's been done on other cars and it would not surprise me if it was possible on the Toyota.
>>
>>16722353
>>16722361
I know the 1uz is faster but I'm kinda stuck on that inline 6 reliability of the 2jz, any other reasons to go for the gs400 instead besides the v8
>>
>>16722375
The 4.0L V8 is actually more reliable than the 2JZ. The 2JZ is only popular because it's a meme motor.

There is a 2013 FRS TRD for sale near me, $13,995, 67k miles.

Should I get the FRS, or try to hold out and find a gt86 on sale at the end of the year?

Also, if this is a car I don't intend to get rid of, would it be better to buy it used, or to buy one brand new, and have it only have been my car? Is it worth spending an extra 10k over?

Do you have a car?
Do you need a car?
Was it maintained well?
Does it need any major work?

500 is pretty good assuming it runs. As long as it doesn't need any major repairs you'll definitely get your moneys worth assuming you take care of it.
>>
>>16723806
My preference is 5-10k miles per year when buying used. I don't really know how reliable the engines are in the frs twins since I haven't heard one gone up to 100k miles yet. I recommend owning another car just in case anything happens with it. It could be a beater back up car too, doesn't have to be fancy, like an old corolla.

No
Kind of (I get by with bus and rides from roommate)

Whoever owned is probably the first owner. If they did regular maintenance, it might as well be new. Ask if they have service papers, etc etc. Look around the area for similar mileage cars and the price.

Ease of entry into cool Toyotas isn't as easy I think. Any car enthusiast looking for a cheap fun econobox is gonna likely go for a civic, then they're gonna mod it. You want a cool Toyota? If it's fwd, Honda is probably better. Rwd? Your choices are mostly 80s heaps that have been neglected or rusted out or things that cost money like Supras, Aristos, Lexus SC's mr2's etc.
>>
>>16723772
there's too much traffic in my city for me to go fast anyway
>>
>>16727880
Yeah that's a big part of it. Older corollas dont have the same cool factor as older civics and the civics usually have more standard on their older base models as well. Give it 5 years and we'll see a toyota renaissance like honda has now, with tc's and frs's getting cheaper along with is's and with a new supra out. Maybe 5-10 years for significant enough price drops for people on /o/ to buy them and rice them like they do with hondas.

They are just hitting puberty at 150k miles.

Lots of life left as long as they are rust free and the timing belt has been done around 100k miles. Only thing to check is the alternator area.m he intake manifold mounts over it. So if there is an intake manifold coolant leak, it kills the alt.m same thing with the power steering pump.

As long as the above can be checked off, and the car wasn't owned by some nigger drug dealer or white stancefag before, you should be confident with any of the lexus V8's.

Since I have to say goodbye to my old shitbox because of the things I have to repair for technical inspection of my country ( TÜV ) being more expensive than buying another one and rust eating it apart, I am currently looking for a new one for the next couple of years that will be cheap to maintain in that time.
I found 2 cars that would be perfect for my budget, one Celica 5th gen for 1100 Euro with 255k km which looks pretty neat and the ad says it got regular inspections, and one Starlet 3rd gen for 950 Euro with 180k km that looks ok.
What do you guys think, is the Celica with only 106 PS even more fun that the Starlet?
Would a Celica be way more expensive to maintain than a Starlet so that it would be a pretty stupid idea to get one when I do not have that much money?
Should I worry about the Celica already having 255k km, or is that no problem at all?
Which one would you rather get as a DD for the next maybe 4-6 years?

Head gasket issue is real. Just replace it and retorque it and it'll be fine.

Maintenance is just like a regular car. Though oil changes must be changed sooner for the turbo ones since they like to make the oil black. A few electrical gremlins will show up too because of the age and you might have to fix something every now and then just because of age.

It's comfy

For the 80's it was fast. For today, it's about average

If you have straight roads and that's it you're probably going to want something with a turbo unless you do a lot of conefagging or track days. Either way, I lean towards the MR2 unless you need practicality. They're both straight line slow anyway unless you meant sw20 or Celica all trac. There's no real mods for the Spyder though except engine swap. The 1zz is prone to early death when not well maintained.

it should still be pretty fun to drive, it's not like you're losing rwd coming from the tC. Isn't the engine a good size? I don't hear too much about the ES since people usually go for the IS at that price point. Is there any driving feels or is it fairly numb because muh luxury?
>>
>>16747996
Don't actually have it yet, have it coming in sometime next week. It is the hybrid model though.

I see ~141hp for the Camry's similar electric motor only + a little four cylinder added on. (Lexus claims 200hp total between these two)

I just don't think it will be like my TC with all the extra weight and luxury features for a smooth ride. I guess I could be worse off anyway. Might as well be happy I have a solid comfy car for 6 years at a minimum.

>>
>>16750882
The xB is very tall person friendly and can comfortably seat four adults. It's a little narrow so seating three people in the backseat can be a bit of a squeeze.
It feels very open inside, despite being small. The trunk area however is very small. It's just wide and deep enough to fit a 48-quart cooler and a backpack. You're not going to be hauling much in it unless you fold the back seats down.
You can either have passengers or cargo, both tend not to work at the same time.

The car itself is rather slow, but you can't expect too much from a box with 105HP. Fuel economy isn't terrible, but it isn't really great either.

Factory stereo is pretty good for what it is. The only reason I'd ever want to replace it would be to get something with bluetooth.

Overall, I'm glad I got it. I probably would've ended up with a Mazda2 if I hadn't bought the xB.

>>
>>16752072
We get the Auris, just not that specific version, and getting the Auris is actually very recent here. They come with every single "option" as standard equipment. Everything you get as an option, we get as standard equipment. The only engine is the 1.8L 2ZR-FAE engine, and the transmissions are either a 6 speed manual (borrowed from the now dead Scion tC), or a CVT automatic. Also, no hybrid BS.
For 2016, it was introduced as the Scion iM.
With Toyota killing off the Scion brand here, 2017+ models are sold as the Toyota Corolla iM.

Prior to that, we did get the first generation Toyota Auris. Here, it had a different front end, a different rear end, and was sold here as the second generation Toyota Matrix.

Yes and no.
The xA and first gen xB are based on the Toyota Echo.
The Yaris uses a different platform, but the same engine/transmissions.
The Scion equivalent to the Yaris is actually the Scion xD, which, aside from 5 lug wheels, bigger brakes (taken from the Corolla), and a bigger engine, is essentially a Yaris underneath. You can actually swap the xD engine into the Yaris using the xD mounts, ECU, and wiring harness. All that needs changing is 2 wires.

yeah, thats what i was fearing. never had an issue untill i changed the oil the previous owner had in it, which has got me skeptical
>>
>>16756235
Halfway through swapping an na-t 2JZ into my X8. GTE ECU with a piggyback is fine up to 600hp. I did some rough calculations of what I've spent and what I still need to get and it comes to about $3900, and that includes an OS Giken twin disc clutch/flywheel, bellhousing for my R154, Borg Warner S363, and all the other things like seals, 440cc 7mgte injectors ($40 lol aristo ecu runs off that size stock), SAFC, coilpacks/igniter, MAP sensor, FFIM, Q45 tb, wideband, power steering line, ect.

Overall, it'll be way cheaper than starting with a GTE block.

>I don't hate the 7m like you do
You must be new to them
>>
>>16752873
I use Redline MT-90 but that's in an R154 which is kinda picky. I agree with >>16753941 your synchros are probably fuggd
>>
>>16756403
I wired it myself, too. That saved me $400-800. It was pretty easy. Lots of detailed wiring diagrams online.
>>
>>16756403
Well at that price it's better than a 7m. Where'd you get the motor? Like I said, I think I'm going to get some 550cc injectors and use the free maft pro I have and throw 15 Psi at the 7m until it blows and hopefully by then I'll be ready to go 2j. I've already thrown money at this car and it's not worth anything so selling it just feels stupid. I like the Supra a lot, but it doesn't really turn, it doesn't really stop, and it doesn't go hard enough in a straight line yet.
>>
>>16756219
Clean man!
>>
>>16756617
Cheers bro, It's starting to get along in age but it's good for over 20 years old.
>>
>>16756513
Pulled the motor from the junkyard myself. $360 for the whole motorset, minus auto tranny. If you want to waste money and time, sure, throw 15psi to a 7M. It will blow. One, way or another. And the longer you throw money at that shitty engine, the more you will regret not putting it towards a 2JZ setup.

Same engine mounts, will bolt to the stock transmission if need be.

That is pretty low mileage. Anything else done to the car besides the interior? It can be turboed if you can find a kit there should be minimum fabrication if any

What is the reliability of the Toyobaru engine between turbo and super?
>>
>>16758797
That's not nearly as terrible looking as I expected. Could use wheels though. Everything could use nicer wheels.

Nice, my sister also had a 2012 Prius C all fully loaded like yours. It was a pretty nice car and I almost considered buying it when she put it up for sale. Yours looks much nicer in black than her white one did, too.

Also the warranty on the battery runs out at 100,000 miles or something, and once the battery dies I think it's pretty expensive to replace. Is yours getting close to that number? I think they usually last a lot longer than that, but that is something that sort of puts me off of buying a used hybrid.

Are blog posts allowed here? I'm the dude who bought the V6 AW11 and wanted to post what I'm doing on here, since it's really my first time working on a car.

I'm picking it up on Sunday, still have to transfer the title and get a signature. I'm taking it straight to Les Schwab from the dudes house for an alignment, brake fix (they are new but soft, the dude gave me an extra master cylinder that they will probably have to install), and new windsheild. After that I'll probably be able to work everything else out.

I have an autotragic Cressida that is pretty mint but I'm gonna part it out after maybe taking some parts. The MR2 needs a turn signal so today I removed the Cressida's and will see if it fits. I just took off the lamp and light for now, tomorrow I'll dig around in the fuse box and remove it.
>>
>>16761427
in what world does a cressida turn signal fit an AW11?

They look pretty similar, but I really have no idea what I'm doing. Pic below is the part I need, not sure if the mr2 is just missing the lamp and light fixture, or everything + cables and relay. I might try and jury rig it for now until I can find an actual part or order one for a lot of money it seems

>yeah ive never seen any other toyotas with similar rims but the only reason i didnt think it was aftermarket was the center caps. Didnt know if any other anons had some similar wheels i could look at
Those are like mid-2000's Lexus ES. From when cars had wheels that wore comfortable tires and didn't steal 2mpg because every car comes on 18"-19" wheels now when 15-16 made sense.

I know a Toyota dealership owner, and he said he's never had a customer that needed a replacement battery pack on a hybrid with less than 400.000km.

Also, I read somewhere that refurbished battery packs are a way cheaper and last just as long.
