The 2zz is a high compression motor and requires 91. You could probably use 89, but it'll retard the timing and you'll lose power and efficiency. Also, clearly Toyota thinks you shouldn't, so I would just put 91. The 2zz is a really great motor though, a lot of fun to rev out... So I've been told at least.

>>

I suppose. Once you accept it, buying 91 isn't so bad. Try using gas buddy to find the cheapest gas around, and always fill up when you see it cheap. If you know anybody with a Costco membership, mooch the fuck outta that.

The paint on the tC is clean thankfully, the reason the front of the box was black was because of the neglect of the previous owner to the paint. I plan on leaving the tC exterior stock, no light tinting or painting or decals or anything like that.

I'd like to do something performance wise, but nothing really provides any real gains besides a turbo and I don't want to put a turbo on a camry engine really, so I think the tC is going to stay stock until I give it up.

I think I've finally decided on the engine setup I want with my 86. Keep the exhaust I have (it's something similar to a Fujitsubo LegalisR) and get the Tomei Poncams plus the Matrix Garage 11:1 pistons for a good lift in power above 4000rpm. Lastly I'll also get a second OEM ECU and overclock it by some 10-15% to reach a 8200-8500 rpm rev limiter instead of 7500rpm. With the lighter pistons, upgraded valvetrain and the already installed flywheel that shouldn't be a problem for the engine. With the higher ECU clock, idle rpm will also go up accordingly and the slight shift in ignition point is offset by turning the distributor a little later. I expect to see around 160 hp at the crank this way, or around 130whp.
Any 4age gurus on here who can comment on my plans?

I mean, I can regurgitate tons of research and numbers based on the 7m, but that's about it. Cool Toyotas are too few and far between. The barrier to civic entry is non existent, but how many people even know somebody with a heavily modified 86 or MR2?
>>
>>16684552
What's so bad about oil burning anyways
>>
>>16684534
Yes, you can replace the quartz inside the ECU that generates the clock frequency with a slightly higher frequency one. The ECU and all software on it will run higher, which means that it will read the same rpm as a slightly lower rpm. That also goes for the rev limiter.
Essentially you trick it into thinking that an actual 8000 rpm is 7500 rpm or whatever you choose. Just also means that all settings on the ECU are off by the same margin, including idle rpm and possibly injection amounts and things.
People have successfully done these mods, so the default settings are resilient enough to work anyways. Fortunately the tach and speedo in the dash does its own reading and aren't affected by this mod, so you don't have to recalibrate those.

>>16684636
Pretty much this, I guess.
>>
>>16684952
That's some of the coolest shit I've ever heard. My next car is going to be lightweight and rev happy. The supra is cool and all, but I've always wanted a lightweight screamer. Problem is I can't drive stick because I'm crippled and 80s automatics don't mesh well with high RPM low torque.
>>
>>16685161
Shouldn't automatics work better with rev happy cars rather than slow revving ones? The way I understand the torque converter is that the higher the rotational speed, the more does the fluid move and the better the coupling between input and output.
In my DD Camry, the slushbox goes from soft at 1500rpm to quite decently direct at 4000rpm as internal slip in the torque converter is reduced.

Overclocking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyecbgPfKKI
>>
>>16685370
It's the lack of control really. The car downshifts and upshifts whenever it wants and you're removed from the equation. Not as bad when you can just lock it in 3 and let low end torque pull you out of stuff.
>>
>>16682666
I actually really like the stock rims, I am considering new wheels though. This is my daily so I'd rather not lower it, there's so many bumps and potholes in Florida I would scrape on a daily basis even if I barely lowered it at all.

>>16684517
Considering an exhaust, the TRD one kind of drones apparently and just sounds alright at best, so might go third party.

>>
>>16686225
As usual, cams and pistons and an exhaust if you want to keep it NA. Fuel efficiency goes down then. Or add intercooler, turbo and ecu if you want cheaper and higher numbers.
>>
>>16687457
About how much HP could that add? Internet tells me I have about 175
>>
>>16687922
Is that a 2L or something? While keeping most things in the engine stock, you can normally get to a pretty reliable 100 HP/L, depending on how rev-happy the engine is made to be.
I know that the 2.2L 5sfe in my Camry could be brought from some 130hp to 170/180hp with those mods. Head design, valve size/shape and so on is made for fuel economy, so getting it close to the 100hp/l mark would need more work. On the other hand the 4age can be brought to 100hp/l quite easily and many get a lot more out of it. You'll have to check online to see what is possible with your specific engine.
>>
OI
>>
>>16684517
You're going to need some bigger injectors to really pull as much HP as your asking for at the crank. IMO it's not worth putting that much into your car and expecting reliable HP without bigger injectors. I know that forums say otherwise, but stock injectors + stock ECU (even overclocked) is only going to be able to do so much to keep from going lean.

>>
>>16690091
Do I understand it right that when you go rich you start to make soot and when you go lean you just lose power?
Swapping to poncams and pistons work with the stock ECU as advertised at least. What impact overclocking the ECU has, apart from messing with ignition timing, I haven't been able to figure out yet. Tomei has a nice dyno graph for the poncams that goes to 150-152 HP.
I'll have to see about injectors when I've got pistons and cams. Which ones are a common swap?
>>
>>16693206
Well rich will give you carbon build up if it's way too rich, and backfires maybe. Lean will melt a piston. Injectors, or maybe just adjustable fuel pressure might be a good idea. There's gotta be some 86 tuner out there you can call and ask questions. You'd be surprised how many people will share their knowledge of you just ask. Or get a wideband O2 gauge and an afpr after you out the engine together and find out if you're running lean yourself.

From the wording I can't tell if it's running or not but seems like a pretty good deal for the shape it's in
>>

hey /tg/.

what can you guys tell me about the Soarer? i made a thread the other day about me going to Japan to work, and a couple people said the Soarer was a fun, modestly priced car.

are the parts a bitch to find in the states if i decide to ship it back with me?
>>
>>16706881
>engine doesn't run, comes with an extra engine that does
I wouldn't cop it but that's just me. If you're motivated enough to swap in the extra motor why not?
>>
>>16706661
I just got it last month so only an exhaust. I'm waiting on my coilovers.
I want to get them fog lights too because the front is entirely vents and it looks weird

>>16706037
Idk if a fat person can fit in the back but my friend who is 6'4" and skinny fits with ease. The second gen really improved the back seat spacing, first gen was really tight in the back for me and I'm only 5'10" kek

Basically a Supra in the shape of a sedan. Engine parts swap around easily, anything in regards to trim parts doesn't. For those you'll have to scavenge ebay and possibly get some contacts in japan to buy them for you.
I have that a little with my 86, but as most markets got it in one way or another, it's not that hard to find things. I imagine the Soarer to be pretty tricky in that regard.
>>
>>16706903
Hey, I own
>>16698067
That, and my brother owns a z20 soarer with a 2jzgte swap.

Basically it is an a70 supra in a coupe, all the suspension bits literally bolt on, such as coilovers, brakes, differential, and I assume even the subframe.

7m is an awful engine, avoid it at all costs. You will swap that out eventually so keep that in mind. However, there's also the option of the 1ggte, which is a decent motor but is very underpowered, at least for my standards... Fun can be had with such a motor as long as there's a manual transmission behind it.

Parts will be easy to get, with the exception of body parts, of course. It'll be your worst nightmare if and when you get into an accident with it because finding parts will HAVE to come from Japan, and insurance companies will try their best to value your car at $2000 because they don't know wtf it is

That being said to me, a70 isn't that great of a platform. It's heavy, doesn't handle very well compared to other options, but parts are there and with enough modifications it can be made really fun.

Is the exhaust from the previous owner or did you put it on? What brand is it? Considering getting an exhaust and an intake for mine just for shits and giggles

Tsudo s2 catback exhaust. Put it on myself because the stock one was rusty. It cost me about 300 and has a nice deep sound.
>>
>>16707366
Pretty much this except >7m is awful.
You'll live in constant fear unless you spend the time and money preparing it properly, but it's got torkz and makes power more easily than a 1j. 1g's have oiling problems and don't really make power, I fail to see how it's better than a 7m.
>>

>Other than a huge, glaring issue that requires a shitton of labour to fix, what's the issue?

Hur.
>>
I'm looking for two vehicles, one to dd and keep stock and one to take a 2j or 7mgte + turbo (for fun)

I wanted them to be ideally
>Toyota
>81-92
>rwd
>sexy 80s lines
>popup lights maybe?

I was thinking of the older celica for a dd, obviously I don't know every make and model so gimme some suggestions bros.

I'd be comfortable with 5k for each vehicle, if they were in good condition.
>>
>>16708906
Probably a mkIII Supra, could be for both if you find a clean turbo example
SW20 Turbo might fancy your need for speed and adrenaline but you won't get the 80's lines unless you go for the homely 4age AW11, the 3sgte is a great engine and the handling is very unique and rewarding
>>
>>16709095
This shows up when you Google "4age aw11," looks mint but I like the look of the mk3 supra for instance.

Sw20 while similar looks to me to strike a good pose between the 80s lines and a modern look. How does the Sw20 handle?
>>
>>16709115
Think of the SW20 as the really bitchy girlfriend when she's at her slim breaking point that will ALWAYS love you

The turn in is noticably sharp and the car never wants to rotate unless you hit the limits of physics which is bad (in any car but this one especially).
You will find confidence you didn't know you had while driving the car
You will keep that throttle down in the corners cause that thing is planted to the road

Check out this video, this guy is spot on and from my experience every other car specific community is nowhere as tight as the mr2 community. Even the drift fag 240s and the delusional Miata owners
https://youtu.be/szNTIRb09b0
>>
>>16708234
It's not the engine's fault though. If you can get past that do you think it's a good engine?
>>
>>16708906
I'd say corolla sedan for dd and mk3 supra for fun. Can't go wrong with an 86 if you find one within your boundaries.
>>
>>16709162
How would you feel about the na Sw20? Looking at some of the specs, it could be a good dd, and I could keep a mk3 supra for my fast car. Plus the na Sw20 in my area are cheap, almost cheap enough to just buy a car plus engine, if I want.

Is it under powered at all in the na form?
>>
>>16709233
A motor that's prone to blow head gaskets is the motors fault, but even with the head gasket issue fixed it's nowhere near a 1jz in terms of performance. 1jz is much more reliable, much much bigger aftermarket, and can handle much more boost reliably. Sure the 7m can be reliable and make a lot of power, but it requires insane amounts of money to do so. Anyone can make good power as long as they throw enough money at it. To have fun with a 1jzgte, all you need is an exhaust and intake and you have a fun, reliable car.

It's not like I'm gonna build my 7m anyways
>>
>>16709269
I went from an NA to the 3sgte turbo and I say it's pretty good. It's kinda slow in comparison but it's not SLOW. Still handles the same as the turbo models so I say go for it, you could always swap to the turbo engine if you fancy that as well (around 3k usually, can be cheaper)
Kinda ironic you would use an SW20 as a DD and a mk3 as the "fast" car. Mk3s are boats but at least they're comfy and is 2+2, mr2 is pretty race car with hard suspension, no power steering traction control abs and all depending on the trim. They're not hard at all to daily though (I DD one myself), space and cabin is strategical large and seats/seating position is soo comfy
>>
>>16709162
Do you have any experience with the zzw30?

Yup, did a Lotus 2zz swap into one. Those things are zippy as hell and are low key better than miatas. Is lighter than an NB and can be even more lighter. These Mr-s used to dominate in best motoring touge battles too.

Only downfall is that there's no usable space AT ALL. seriously... You get a cubby the size of a children's backpack
>>
>>16709280
But this is wrong. Check supra fourms. Everybody agrees that a 7m will make more power than a 1j because no replacement for displacement. I can't argue that the 1j isn't more reliable, but a 7m supra is faster, at least in a straight line than a 1j with similar dollar investment. More so if you plan on doing your own work. Also, a bad torque spec from Toyota is most of the reason for its headgasket issue. Although the head design could have used a bit of work. Anyway, I'm not arguing that it's the best, or even not the worst. I just think "avoid at all costs" is strong language.
>>
>>16709575

But then again, the engine swap is NEEDED since most of the 1zz now have varying degrees of fucked engines because of the retarded catalyst-in-header design that ends up clogging up and spewing random bits back into the engine.
I've never seen one for sale with a broken engine either - when they do finally break, the owners usually gets a brand new engine and hooks it up to the broken catalyst again and then sells the car to the next sucker.

TL:DR: Don't touch these without a leakdown test. And if it passes, don't drive it ever with the original exhaust.
>>
>>16709648
I really want one of these but they're 10k plus here. And apparently the dual clutch is terrible.
>>
>>16709329
Hmm. From what you've told me, I may have a 3rd option between the dd and fast car, which would be just to have a turbo sw20 as my dd. From my own experience though, the community seems pretty split between people who say forced induction is retarded on a dd, and those who say who cares, just turning the key causes engine wear so why not?

And you are right, I do remember the mk3 being on the heavy side. It was the celica supra that was the lighter one, right?
>>
>>16709661
Celica supra is about 3000 lbs+ the mk3 is 3500ish.
And yes you can daily drive a turbo car. Mazdaspeeds, Subaru's, Audi's, and BMW's all have factory turbos that people daily, why not Toyota? Just follow maintenance schedules, don't drive like an asshole until it's warm, and drive gently before you get to your destination to let the oil in your turbo cool.
>>
>>16709661
Not him but it won't bother you at all lol.
The big difference is only noticable if your foot is jammed in the throttle, if anything a turbo on a DD would be a plus if you wanted to have more fun with a heavier foot
>>
>>16709647
>similar dollar investment
but which one would be more reliable? always would be the 1jz.

>>16709317
since literally every single engine from toyota came from the factory with this issue, it's basically the engine's fault because they all share the same issue

sure, it technically isnt the engine's fault, but it's safer to say 7ms are prone to failure because of this

from these 7ms having the improper torque spec 20+ years ago, they develop warped heads from the head gaskets failing, causing the exhaust side to warp and let high pressure fuel into the water passages, thus leading to constant overheating. this is only fixed by lapping or machining the heads, which is a shitload of work for such a simple thing that wouldn't be affected by 1jzs because the materials used in the 1jz heads are vastly superior compared to the 7m.

7ms are never worth the money.

this guy >>16706903 here.

i'd like to keep the car as bone stock as possible, and the fact that its a bit heavier and slower than a US Supra is a good thing in my mind. when i come back from japan i plan on just throwing into a barn or something until my son turns 16.

is an engine swap really inevitable? can i just assume that all 7m's are going to have warped heads? or is it something i can prevent with some fore sight?
>>
Just bought a 96 camry, anything i need to know? Never messed with a Toyota before
>>
>>16710855
As long as the 7m has really low miles, all you'd have to do is replace the head gasket asap with a metal one and torque it properly
>>
>>16711195

Easier said than done. That said, the stock one is fine with arp's, just don't try and push more than 400hp with it.
