Okay so /o/... I'm kind of a paranoid guy when it comes to things like this, but I'm a poorfag student who needs a new VW flip-out key for my Golf. I looked around on Yelp and sent out some requests for a quote. Got a few responses back, lowest in the neighborhood of $200. Then one guy from a well-reviewed company replied that he could do it for free! That he was involved in a technician class going on in my city (Central FL).
Basically if I come hang out for a few hours I'll end up with a brand new key, programmed to the car and everything, for free, its just going to be a pain in the ass. I don't mind doing so to save money, but am I going to get robbed? The business has reviews going back years and he seems honest, answers phone politely etc. I've just never heard of this before and I'm not the type to believe in the free lunch..
Pic related is the yelp page. Thanks for any advice here, I'm going to cross post on /adv I think but they don't usually know anything

>flip-out key for my Golf.
Don't Lowes or Home Depot sell generic transmitter keyfobs with the flip out key for around $70 for the fob? If so, then they can cut the groves into the bar key for the additional fee.
The problem about matching the keyfob to your car is done by many cars with no dealer needed. Check your owner manual. Some cars re-read the fob at the column. My GM car has an area in the console box where the fob is inserted. With the authentic fob switching the engine on and off as well as the active on (but no cranking) several times, it will read that new fob and add it to the list of accepted fobs for the car.
