What's the typical cost of getting another engine dropped into my car? My 1993 Celica GT had some oil leaking right around the alternator. Car was cranking afterwards but now isn't cranking over at all. As far as I can tell my engine is pretty much done. I hate having car payments and this car has run great for 2 years for me. I kind of just don't want to part with it.

I think my radio is causing parasitic battery drain. A night of sitting, and the battery is near dead. 2 nights, and I get 0 action from the battery, needs jumped.

The radio is new and I had it professionally installed. Is it 100% the installation, or radio? There anything I can do? I can push a button on the radio to pop it slightly out of the din, that kills all power to the radio, but that fucking sucks.

CO2 or Carbon dioxide is used as a monitor gas for emission testing.

Excessively high CO or carbon monoxide is an indicator of a rich condition.

High NOx nitrous oxides are found in lean mixtures.

At the correct air and fuel ratio for gasoline engine engines, CO2 will be at its highest concentration and with CO, Hydrocarbons at their lowest.

If the reading of Carbon Dioxide CO2 is greater than 16% of the sample volume, something is wrong. Check the test equipment.

Other than that maybe the idle needs to be adjusted?

So having owned my E46 BMW for a couple of weeks now, I noticed a little green light on the steering column, halfway between the steering wheel and the dashboard. I went through the manual, and there was no info about it. It doesn't seem to indicate anything, as it always stays on when the engine's on, and as far as I know, there are no aftermarket security systems in the car. Got a couple of issues with my new car:

>1/4" paint chipped at the edge of the hood closest to the windshield (looks like someone opened the hood while the wipers were up)
>windshield has suction cup marks that won't come out with anything I've tried. It looks like it may be sandwiched between 2 layers of glass.
>windshield glass has a scratch at the lower drivers side window in the shape of almost a nike swoosh mark that looks like it happened with an orbital buffer or something.
>trunk latch sometimes gets stuck and unlocks but doesn't let the trunk pop so you have to use a lot of force to get it to unlatch
>latch on fold down back seat takes a lot of pushing to engage when putting the seat back up
>small dent on a horizontal portion of the panel above the gas cap, only noticed it after a detail and wax with lights on it
>some paint imperfections (looked like waterspots, but seems they're paint drops or something like that) on the roof just above the center of the windshield. Also only noticed after a detail and wax with lights on it.

What do you guys think are my options here? How much of this is on the dealership and/or under warranty?
Obviously the windshield and the paint chip are my biggest problems, I can live with the rest. Should I pick my battles so they're more likely to do something about the things I'm most irked by and not even mention the dent, paint, trunk latch, and seat latch?

I've had the car for less than 2 months and about 2000 miles.
>>
>>16712619
>How much of this is on the dealership and/or under warranty?
None of it other than the windshield. In my state, anyway, they shouldn't have even sold it to you with a fucked up windshield.

>2 months
You're fucked. You've had it too long to still be able to prove any of that was there when you bought it.

>Trunk latch
Adjust it. Close it slowly and find out what side it's rubbing on and move the striker accordingly

>Seat issue

I'd personally deal with it, but you could probably adjust the striker on that too.

Which is it? Does it crank or not? Your answer isn't very clear.
>>
>>16712896
>>16712964
Also, did it occur to you to make sure the battery is even in the right way? ALSO, put the key into the drivers door, put it to the UNLOCK position TWICE, then try it. Take pictures of the keyfob inside and out. Is the security light blinking?

The keyfob isn't somehow making the ignition not work. It really sounds like your starter is shot, or that there's a loose connection. It should still crank, run for 2 second, then die if it's being immobilized due to security.

I'm assuming they didn't know, the suction cup marks are only visible when the glass is hazed/damp.
I wish I would have noticed this stuff sooner, but like I said it wasn't until I detailed it for the first time.
The car came with paint protection from the dealership which left a lot of white residue especially on edges and panel gaps so I assumed the paint chip was some of that sealant residue. Wasn't until I went over every crack and crease removing the residue that I realized it wasn't residue but actually a missing piece of paint.
>>
>>16713515
>The car came with paint protection from the dealership
You MIGHT be able to get the paint figured out, but as far as the windshield, trunk, and seat go you're most likely boned.

Only catch is its in Florida (which is great considering everything in the Northeast is rusty) and its due for a timing belt job, other than some minor paint fade on plastic bits the car is mint: Its a rare opportunity given that most of the ones here are rusty, beat to fuck and overpriced. I'd end up flying down, buying it, and driving it back up.

My friends are telling me to not do it because I already have a project car (E36 M3 I'm slowly restoring for track days/autox, pic related), and I risk turning that into another project car when I intend to buy it as a practical daily driver.

What's the risk of mission creep? Will I get bored of my M3? If I didn't have my M3 I wouldn't be second guessing it so much. At the same time its a fantastic price, my current daily driver is falling apart and N/A 5spd Imprezas/Foresters are $3000 less on average locally. This one is rust free, low mileage, and aside from needing some mild refurbishing would be a $6-8k car in my area all day long.

What should I do? How do both cars compare? I love how my E36 M3 feels, I'm actually a little scared I'll like the WRX too much. Or would they feel similar enough I'd feel the M3 is redundant and end up selling it (performance is close on paper)?

Go with a OEM Thermostat. It'll open/close at a specific temperature, and IMO OEM suppliers tend to have better quality standards for thermostats.

Thermostats are a critical component IMO, its worth paying the extra $5-10 for the OEM/OE Equivalent part than going with the Stant or whatever Autozone sells because you'll have the knowledge it'll be good for another 70k miles like the original that came in the car. You're boned if a thermostat fails stuck shut.
>>
>>16714950
*N/A 04-07 Impreza/Foresters are $3000-3500 on average, while that WRX is $4500.

What would you do /o/? Its a awesome deal which is why I'm doing it. I don't really intend on modding it either.

Look at a new as possible Mazda 3 or Prius.

I'm not joking about the Prius, you can get a nice 3rd gen (2011+) or a 2-3 y/o Prius C for that much. Great cars, extremely reliable and comfortable.

Is there any reason to be concerned about the battery?
>>
>>16715081
No, not really. They're common fleet cars, the batteries don't cost more to do than a timing belt job if you do it anywhere other than a dealer. The batteries fail after 7-15 years and 150k miles, and can be repaired (usually one or two cells die, when people take them to the dealer they just try to sell you on a whole battery replacement because Toyota won't service the batteries).

What's the best (or a good) water repellant windshield coating that actually lasts?
My Rain-X applications only last like 2-3 months depending on how much rain there is.
By comparison, I've seen new car windshields have repellency for over a year. What the fuck do they put on there?
Sadly, my new car didn't come coated like my previous ones have. I always thought it was a factory coating but I guess it's actually the dealership that does it.

Ran over a nail, pulled it out. Now I need to patch my tire. I don't want to plug it, it seems lazy and I've got lots of tread left so I want to do it right.
Question: how do I buff the tire? I have access to an air compressor. I have a Dremel, 4" angle grinder and a hand drill. Id prefer not to buy the pnuematic buffer. I think the Dremel isn't powerful enough. Is there some sort of attachment for a drill? Can I use sandpaper?

It depends on where the rust is and how bad it is.

Paint chipped on a panel edge? Sand and use rust converter.
Rusted parts or undercarriage that is only surface deep? Rotary tool + wire brush attachment, then get it rust proofed annually.
Deep rust that is visibly destroying parts of your car with holes? Replace the part, but if it's the chassis then it's time to get the rope and neck yourself.

I got a 2012 Chevy Sonic LTZ that I got from carmax. The car runs perfectly fine, however, when I shift into reverse it starts playing the fucking pink panther theme from some external speaker or something, and I don't know how to turn it off.

At first, when I got the car, it didn't do this until like 4 months later. After a month, it was just garbled noise, but week after week it just magically turned into the fucking pink panther theme that's crisp, clear, and loud.

How do I turn this shit off? Spectators think it's neat, but it annoys the shit out of me.
>>
>>16717479
That shit is most likely connected to the reverse light or (very unlikely) to the reverse bulb on the gearbox.
Open the trunk, get to the back of the taillight with the reverse bulb and see if the wires look like they have been tampered with.
Once you find the wire, cut it and forget about it forever.

If you can't find where it picks up current and you are more mechanically inclined, you can remove the bumper or whatever bodywork the speaker was hidden into and cut the ground wire from there.

Noise it makes isn't fast enough to be tires rubbing against something or brakes
>>
>>16717479
Dude, my sides.
The easiest way to turn this shit off is to find the switch on the transmission that activates the rear lights. It has to be connected on the way there then simply cut the wires, but since its making sound, I suggest putting the car on reverse and then following the sound.
(This works for manual transmissions with direct connection, no idea how it works on automatics or more modern cars.)
>>
Which car would win on the track the 370z or 2012 Camaro SS?
>>
Working on my friend's '94 Escort. Wanted to help change the transmission fluid, but we ran into a different problem. The car had gotten a new battery and then sat for about a year. A few days ago a AAA technician had come by apparently to check the state of the car and it ran, and then proceded to run for an hour, during which the coolant sprung a leak. Not an issue that day.

So, today we try a trickle charger; it stated that the battery was not charging. We tried to jump the car, and it did not make any difference. There is no feedback when turning the key at all.

Has this battery just completely died after a couple days or could it be something else?
>>
I unironically like crossovers. What's the best one under 15k?
>>
>>16719405
Do you know if the battery is holding or charging at all? If you have a multimeter then check your battery to see if it has any charge, 12.3~12.8V or there abouts is fine. If it has charge then the problem is more sinister. Multimeter's are cheap, and they're useful for diagnosing other electrical problems with many things, not just your car, so head to your local hardware or automotive store and buy one for $20.

My 1989 Volvo 740 turbo dropped from 24mpg to 17mpg, and the idle feels too low and varies about 50rpm, occasionally dropping so low that the car shakes. on very rare occasion when I put the car in reverse it'll drop so low it'll stall.
This sounds a lot like a vacuum leak to me however I cannot hear one nor find one with carb cleaner. My father is convinced it's dirty fuel injectors while I'm thinking it could also be in part to an original oxygen sensor with 93k miles on it. Ideas?

No CEL/diagnostics on this model, last year before they came with OBD1 unfortunately. When I got the car it had sat for an unknown number of years and the injectors were pretty filthy, one so much that it was misfiring on that cylinder, Cleaned that up and ran some seafoam/lucas through it and it was fine for about a month after that, getting 24mpg like I said but one day it just dropped, so I'm not really sure why it would get worse due to dirty injectors. It doesn't diesel on shutoff either

Thanks for the input, trying to set up a time to look at the vehicle for evaluation and assessment. I also have people trying to talk me out of this purchase; is servicing a Metro expensive?
>>
>>16720394
>Park gear
I was taught to leave the car in first gear when parked. The reason is that you're also using the engine brake to keep the car still, which might not be important on a flat surface, but it makes good habits for inclines and it provides a secondary force to hold your car other than the parking brake.

I was told that in most cars the parking brake only holds the back wheels, unlike the brake pedal which activates all 4 brake systems, so though a car might be stationary with the brake pedal down, it can eventually roll if just relying on the park brake. Think of first gear like [P]ark in an automatic, it does the same thing by connecting your engine to your transmission.

>Clutch coasting
On the topic of coasting, I was also told to never coast the clutch. It's dangerous for you with no engine brake and throttle control, and it puts wear on your throwout bearing. When stopping the car, I was told to stop in second, start in first. You'll feel when the car is almost at a standstill in second a bit before the engine stalls, and you depress the clutch then and the brake fully to stop the car.

On that note, in Queensland, if you coast your clutch on your test it counts as a noncritical driving error, which can lead to a fail through repeats, or a fail outright if it's excessively long.

The drive shaft connects the transmission to the differential to turn your wheels. Here's a simplified flow of power:

Hey, /o/. The oil consumption of my Toyota 4E-FE engine is way too high, so I thought about checking the PCV-valve first. Now I don't know exactly how old the engine is, because the engine was replaced. The car itself is nearing 240000 km, but then again the "new" engine might have been taken from a very old car itself.

I haven't checked the valve yet, but I was wondering if I should replace it with an expensive OEM valve straight away if it's dirty, or just clean it / go with aftermarket, considering the engine is very old and simple? The car has no maintenance records whatsoever, I bought it dirt-cheap as a first car.

Thanks.

The non turbo 240's in 1989 had LH2.4 and a CEL/OBD. The turbo 740's did not get LH2.4 until 1990 as it hadn't been mapped for boost until then, so any pre-90 turbo volvo will not have a CEL or OBD.

No you can't unless that hatch is considerably more aerodynamic. Also you have to consider one of the main reasons people buy Superminis: size and cost. People living in European socialist utopias have to get the most out of their heavily taxed income and shitty street-side parking spaces.

Of course in my case my efforts are useless because there are 2 businesses across and next to my house that have a total of 3 fucking vans.

The weather is getting nicer so I am planning on swapping the plates from my winter car to my summer car. What should I do to keep it prepped for next winter? Off the top of my head I think:

>Fill tires up with air (how much psi? 34, 40?)
>Put gas in the car (how much? half tank, full tank? add fuel stabilizer too?)
>Disconnect battery (how long should it sit unplugged? how often should I use my battery charger on it?)

I plan on parking the car on grass - should I lay down a tarp between the tires and grass so the acid from the grass doesn't ruin the lines?

Anything else I forgot?

Oil film the undercoat or something. Two things about grass, it won't be grass anymore once you park a car over it for half a year. And it traps a lot of moisture and can fuck your shit up with rust
>>
>>16722540
Haven't heard the oil film recommendation before, thanks. But in all honesty, it's a winter car and I'm not attached to it. In fact, when my job promotion comes through I plan on getting a newer used car that'll I'll actually take care of.

And to your point about the grass, wouldn't laying down the tarp so the underside the car has a barrier between the grass be enough to prevent moisture from getting trapped?

Sorry for the dumb questions but I genuinely don't know

>>16722520
Fill tires it a bit above recommended, check pressure once in a while if you can, move the car a bit so they don't deform too much (best thing would be to keep the car raised from the ground)

Fill tank to full

Remove battery entirely and trickle charge it constantly if you can

Tarp on grass is a good idea

You are not going to keep it stored for years so you don't have to go full autism with preparations.

When you eventually crank it again next winter, disconnect the fuel pump relay/fuse and crank until the oil pressure light on your dash turns off, then power the fuel pump again and fire the engine normally.

Thanks boss, appreciate it

>Fill tires it a bit above recommended
Not gonna lie, I'm actually afraid of doing that because I feel like the tires will explode and kill me. Also, I've got a bit of dry rot on the sidewall of my driver's front, nothing too bad but I'm not sure if overfilling that tire will explode

>check pressure once in a while if you can
Easy enough, I've got the tire gauge check pen

>move the car a bit so they don't deform too much (best thing would be to keep the car raised from the ground)
I've heard mixed opinions about suspending the car; some say you want the suspension to be free from the pressure while others argue against it. Also, the car will be sitting on lopsided grass, so stands won't work.

>Fill tank to full
Easy enough, will fill with regular and no fuel stabilizer

>Remove battery entirely and trickle charge it constantly if you can
Easy enough

>Tarp on grass is a good idea
Agree

>When you eventually crank it again next winter, disconnect the fuel pump relay/fuse and crank until the oil pressure light on your dash turns off, then power the fuel pump again and fire the engine normally
Can you elaborate on this? I'm not sure why I'd have to do that

Thanks!
>>
>>16722820
The tires won't explode, they are designed to have a significant factor of safety so if some bumblefuck overfills them while it's cold, they won't explode if they heat up, most have a burst pressure of 200 psi give or take so you will be fine.

I'd also recommend you go with the fuel stabilizer, however if it's a massive issue to get it you can go without, I own a boat and have worked on many friends boats, the number one thing that kills those engines is bad gas, the fuel stabilizer is a cheap insurance to make sure that doesn't happen, also make sure to fill up the tank, otherwise, water can condense on the top and will be drawn into the fuel by ethanol.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. “You think they can’t take seventy-five?” He nodded, moving away as I stooped to deal with the left front. “You’re damn right,” he said. “Those tires want twenty eight in the front and thirty two in the rear. Hell, fifty’s dangerous, but seventy five is crazy. They’ll explode!” I shook my head and kept filling the left front. “I told you,” I said, “Sandoz laboratories designed these tires. They’re special. I could load them up to a hundred.

“God almighty!” he groaned. “Don’t do that here.”

“Not today,” I replied. “I want to see how they corner with seventy-five.” He chuckled. “You won’t even get to the corner, Mister.”

May have figured it out.
My O ring on 4th cylinder is a goner. So it doesn't compress as well.

>>
>>16723348

>>
>>16722820
>I'm actually afraid of doing that because I feel like the tires will explode and kill me
Not an issue, I said "a bit" more than recommended, not a lot more. If you have, say, a 2.5 bar recommended, go with 2.8/3.0
You are not going to drive with it, it's just so you don't risk them losing too much air over time and sagging under the car's weight. Tires will lose air no matter what you do, if you overinflate a bit you won't have to check the pressure too often and the tires won't deform as much.

>Can you elaborate on this? I'm not sure why I'd have to do that
When you shut down an engine, it will be full of oil everywhere. Over time that oil will find ita way back to the oil sump and your engine will sit dry, Including the oil filter, which is supposed to be the last thing to remain dry.
By disconnecting the fuel pump you will be able to crank the engine without it actually firing.
The oil pump is driven by the engine rotation, it doesn't need a live engine to work, so by cranking a few seconds you will prime the oil pump and send oil all around the engine.
This way, when you do actually fire it up, it will already be lubricated and with a good oil pressure.
If you don't do that, especially after months of storage, you will run a live engine with no lubrication for a few seconds, because the oil pump has to catch up with an almost completely dry engine.

Once the oil pressure light is off, you connect the fuel pump again and go your merry way.

This is something you should always do when you let a car sit for months. It won't destroy your engine right away if you don't do that, but not doing that sure as hell is not good either.

Co2? Are you sure? Co2 is generally an indication of a good clean burn. High HC indicates excessive fuel and incomolete while high Nox indicates too little fuel and hot combustion.

Carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen are the products of a stoichiometric combustion process and there's really not much that can or should be done to reduce their levels.

I don't feel anything in the steering wheel when it clunks so I'm inclined to think it's not the tie rod ends or anything in the steering rack.

If your main concern is not looking like a retard, then you need a proper pair of glasses with whatever lenses you need to see so you can swap between the two pairs when needed.
This is also the most experienced sice option.

IMO, if you have to choose between using contacts and driving with two pair of glasses at the same time, the first is by far the most pleasing to see, not to mention the most comfortable.

Or you can buy one of those glasses with magnets on the frame so you can snap shaded lenses on it without looking bad, but at that point you are better off buying a pair of proper sunglasses with proper lenses.

You need an adapter harness so you can use your stock radio connector with the universal connector you will find on your new unit, which is most likely going to be an ISO connector.

It looks like pic related (black and brown connectors is the ISO side, identical on most aftermarket radios, the other side will be compatible with your original connector) and it's very cheap, you can find it easily on Amazon or other online stores.

It probably means the dimensions of the unit will fit the hole in your car, not that it will be plug and play.

If you can have a look at the physical unit at a store, you can look at the back of the unit, if the connector looks like pic related then it's an ISO unit and you need the adapter.
If you are buying online, ask the seller what kind of connector it has so you can buy the proper adapter.
>>
>>16727455
Oh wait, I didn't see this post, that's not an ISO connector.
Did your car come with an aftermarket unit from the factory or did it have some kind of proprietary design?
Because in the first case you might be lucky and already have the same connector as your new radio (very unlikely), otherwise you still need an adapter.

Ask the seller or look up online what kind of standard that connector fits into, then buy the relevant adapter.

Btw, if you can temporarily remove your current radio and look at the connector, it will make your job way easier

I looked it up, that seems a standard 12pin connector used sometimes by Sony and Pioneer, among others.
I can't find the name of the standard, but I see there are plenty of adapters for it too.

If you can't find the 12-pin to Mazda adapter, you can buy the 12-pin to ISO (pic related) and attach it to an ISO to Mazda connector.

That is, unless you feel like buying just a 12pin connector with no end, cut the Mazda connector from your stock harness and join the wires yourself
