one is meant to be "production" bikes but really isn't, superstock is production bike racing.

The only things WSBK bikes usually have in common with the road going bikes is the very basics of the engine, like it's block or whatever and the frame.

Usually the swingarm is totally new, the fuel tank is usually relocated to under the seat, new airbox designs, advanced electronics that make only half the cylinders come online mid corner etc.

So although they look like production bikes WSBK machines are actually almost prototypes these days.
>>
>>16705625
>advanced electronics that make only half the cylinders come online mid corner

That's been stopped this year actually, in an effort to make them closer to the production bikes.

What should i look for in a 125cc bike?

Most of the options are the SYM wolf (pictured)
a honda CBF/CBR 125 or
a Daelim Roadstar, which is a honda CBF 125 made in korea under licence

What would you recommend? all i've ridden in the past is a 150cc scooter that was heavy as fuck so pretty slow. so this would be my first manual bike.

and 1000won is about $1. these bikes are all around 1200 to 1900 depending on condition, so the money aspect isn't a huge deal.

Im kind of tempted to as it will more prepare me for eventually riding larger bikes when i go back to the west, but the sym is smaller, so is better suited for East and SE asia. and looks good, like in person they just look great.

I will have a look at them both in person, I like the look of the SYM but that's not the best reason to buy a bike

What are you looking for in a bike? If it's going to be a commuter then being comfy will be crucial since many 125s are designed for Indians or 16 year olds and it may be hard to find something of appropriate size.

The only reason I'd consider something """"""""""sporty"""""""""" would be if I had to go long stretches of highway with the throttle wide open.

Of course, if you're allowed a two-stroke then an NSR is always the right choice. Frankly you should have just gotten a license back in wherever.

Looking to move to a more interesting bike soon, since my current bike (Ninja 650) lacks character.

I want to stay in the sports bike territory, but I have no qualms with decreasing CC. I'm currently looking at 250cc 2 strokes (NSR250r, RGV250 and RS250) and some quirky bikes like the RVF400.

Any recommendations? I'm in Ozland if that helps
>>
>>16705794

RVF400 are pushed up too much by LAMS tax. so I'd rather go VFR400 or CBR400RR if you REALLY need a meme 400 (these are not that good by modern standards as 600s weigh a similar amount and have much better suspension, more power etc.)

Imo character is a meme anyway.
>>
>>16705852
Can it rip wheelies my man?
>>
>>16705799
If you want something with 'character' you are probably thinking of either something high-revving like bikes you mentioned, or something with a really strong power curve like a VTR1000

IMO, just test ride all sorts of bikes until you find something you want, if you're bored of your bike just something different will probably interest you. Maybe even try a motard? They're all the same 'character' but it will definitely feel different to your ninja 650.

Yeah I just want something that's a little less mundane than my current bike, but I just don't really need any more power. The 650 makes ~69hp and that's more than enough for road use. By the time you're ringing out 2nd you've broken every speed limit in the country by a good margin.

Cheers for the help, I'm gonna have a bit of a search

Get a cruise control gadget or a left thumb-throttle, you're definitely going to end up resting on your hands a lot and being able to relax your right hand more often makes a huge difference.

>>16705891
The difference is with more power you can break every speed limit over twice as quickly.
Even 100hp with a similar weight will feel like a massive difference and good condition bikes in that class can be picked up pretty cheaply.

I did a 400mi trip (and return) on a bike with essentially the same ergonomics and I installed one before I came back. I can't recommend one enough especially if your bike has a fairly heavy throttle spring. Your whole arm ends up cramping from keeping a static throttle if you're stuck on the highway for a few hours. Just make sure you both install it properly and know how to use it. Not going to recommend the lock I got because it was super cheap and a bit bulky and I didn't like keeping it on while I'm riding twisties.

Millions of riders began on them, so yes.

Many very experienced riders keep old CB or track restorable ones down for nostalgic fun. They are the most successful internal combustion engine in history, outnumbering Ford Model T and air cooled VW production.

Hey faggots how am I supposed to know how much coolant I'm supposed to add to my bike? I drained it completely and I filled up the little reservoir to the full and I poured a ton in the radiator but I don't see a fill line anywhere and even if I did the thing is solid so I can't see it other than looking down the fill hole

So wtf

Greasing them with "disc brake wheel bearing grease" etc every zillion years is fine but requires a good bit of work. Unless you have a very dirty dirt bike or other horrible environmental factors you can ignore it. I don't bother greasing mine unless the bike is apart for paint. Modern tapered roller bearings give no fucks. If an ancient bike with ball bearings, shitcan ball bearings and install a tapered roller kit.

I'm a mechanic with a well-equipped shop. If customer wants theirs greased, I'll cheerfully do so.

A few bikes are sensitive to steering stem preload and lube, notably Harley touring machines. I don't own any because removing touring shit for maintenance annoys me.

Street bike bearings are wildly unlikely to get fucked up. My horribly abused 1988 FXR is on the originals despite being left in the weather uncovered and being very high mileage.

If you mess with vintage Jap bikes they may have ball bearings and are now so old it's time for tapered rollers anyway. That was a typical, and noticeable, aftermarket upgrade when they were new.

Wooden chocks work wonders at controlling roll. If you lack worthy scrap, one pressure treated 4x4 yields many chocks. You want a couple for safe van tire changes on the road anyway.

I sometimes chock a couple feet forward of a vehicle, push vehicle, then kick in another chock behind a tire to prevent rollback if necessary, and repeat if needed so vehicle doesn't gain much momentum. Your van will roll easier if you air up the tires. Even a bicycle pump will work though it's slow.

Next time remove your van battery and store indoors in a plastic tub, preferably on a tender. I keep many batteries indoors on a plastic cart and rotate the tender between them over the winter. They do double duty during power outages running muh router (off an inverter), some LED lights, and charging my phone. This works so well I rarely run my generator.

These jump packs are god tier.

https://www.amazon.com/Jump-N-Carry-JNC660-1700-12-Volt-Starter/dp/B000JFJLP6

I bought one after flogging another at a used car lot. They aren't delicate Walmart junk, and you can find them at auto stores for a few bucks more than online price. Blue Point/Snap-on sell the same units for much more money.

Maybe there is a miscommunication here.

From what I can tell, the clear plastic reservoir has no relationship to the RADIATOR which I also have to fill separately. I already filled the clear plastic reservoir to the fill line. Now I am trying to fill the radiator. The radiator is a solid non-transparent piece of metal so there is no conceivable way for me to see how much fluid is in it.

When the thermostat opens, it allows flow to occur between the radiator and the engine. If the engine is empty of coolant, once it reaches a temperature where the thermostat opens, coolant will flow in from the radiator. Because the levels are now lower all throughout the system, the liquid in the reservoir will be sucked in.

Which is why you need to stop being so dense and just ride it, then fill it up again
>>
>>16706839
Just run the bike after it gets hot the water pump will pump the fluid into the reservoir . . . .

Your coolant system is air locked, fill your radiator up with fluid and leave one of your caps off to let the air bubbles leave your coolant.

Chocks are good at stopping rolling loads unless the surface is slick or the load gets excessive momentum.

Wood sticks so well to pavement and concrete that Air Force F-16 units got rid of plastic chocks and went back to pine. The plastic would sometimes skid on dry concrete at low thrust during maintenance runs.

Chocks are love. The way a proper chock works is the tire presses DOWN onto the chock, which is why chocks are relatively shallow. That pressure sticks the chock to the pavement while the height of the chock represents how much the rolling tire must LIFT to surmount the chock.

Notice the height relationship to the tire.

Sounds OK to me. I'd rinse off the radiator to ensure no antifreeze residue on the outside (it doesn't evaporate as cleanly as water) and keep an eye on it.

If wetting on the radiator persists you can put UV dye in the cooling system then view at night using a black light. Any auto store should have it. (You can also get UV dye for engine oil and AC refrigerant.)
>>
>>16706904
This may help.

http://www.suzukigsxr.cz/docs/Suzuki_GSX-R_600_K4+K5.pdf

Bleeder bolts help release air bubbles high in the cooling system. They are common on cars too. Use anti-seize when reinstalling or at least some grease to prevent thread corrosion.

Hey /dbt/, this question is aimed at non-yuropoors and non-dirt bike/dual sport riders.

As you may or may not be aware, Erik Buell's company Erik Buell Racing is quite literally the only American manufacturer (or was) of sport bikes. The model I am interested in particular is the EBR 1190RX. It's a V-Twin that makes 185hp at the crank and 100 lb/ft torque at the crank which translates to literally the torquiest sport bike on the market currently (at least in stock form).

Beyond that, the bike also has some cool characteristics drawn from Erik Buell's creativity or 'genius' like the fuel in the frame of the bike for better road feel, a single brake rotor up front, and some cool things with the display too. Oh yeah, and it's obviously made in the USA. All in all, from a heritage/cultural perspective, this bike is pretty fucking cool.

Since the company just went out of a business (again), it looks like dealers are liquidating their bikes at some pretty insane prices. Brand new 2014 are going for around $8k and brand new 2016s are around $13k-$14k.

Do you guys think these are pretty good buys? I wonder what they would be worth in the future. The guy is 66 years old now so this is probably the end of the road for his company and brand.

>>16707447
Collectible motorcycles must be kept pristine to be worth much, and if you have money to piss away then get a new one plus all the factory service manuals and spare parts you can lay hands on.

You aren't likely to make any money and if you fail to maintain the machine while in storage that can fuck it up.

Smart move is buy motorcycles to RIDE. I'd say you wouldn't buy a hot chick to lock in the basement and never fuk while hoping she never ages, but this IS 4chan after all.

Buy to ride and enjoy if you buy one. Parts will exist because owners clubs etc will keep the brand support going, just like they do for much less common vintage classics.

I'd buy something expendable and Japanese instead. Performance vehicles are meant to be raced to death. They aren't shrines.
>>
>>16707537
I owned an S40. I am 6'2" and 220lbs, and it really wasn't powerful enough for me after owning it for about a week. You will quickly outgrow it if you ride for any length of time.

On the bright side, it's carbeurated and you can do most of the basic maintenance yourself. Ryca also sells a kit so if you want to turn it into a Cafe racer down the road, you could do that.

Yes, it's certainly less comfortable than a cruiser or touring bike but unless you're 90 or riding 1000 miles a day sportbikes are fine.

Harley's shittiness can't be entirely credited to any one reason. The poor build quality, price, fanboys, marketing, killing American motorcycle innovation, shutting on Harley and the Davidson's legacy, it all adds up to something that needs to die.

SV.
>>
>>16708218
That's why I differentiated, in the city and on the touge.
I have an SV. Throttle control at high RPMs in the city is hard.

Let's say I'm accelerating on the touge, should I shift gear only near redline or do I shift sooner?
>>
>>16708244
shift where you want to, whatever feels best

you don't need to go anywhere near redline in the city, SV has plenty of torque in the middle and down low to keep it around 3-7k most of the time

you can shift at redline on the SV but it has plenty of torque so nothing wrong with short shifting if it suits the circumstances

That's why the manufacturer guide has that stupid speed to gear chart.
One column is usually "fuel economy" use that to solve your runaway problem.
The next is labeled "performance" or "sport" use that for passing, corners, and other fun.

or google.
>>
>>16708258
In the city I generaly shift around 4k, it feels the best and when I'm going all out I don't know, again when it seems best.

I wanted to know if there's some rule or something, like to obtain maximum acceleration you shift near redline.
>>
>>16706559
Dude are you ok? That looks like a pretty bad crash
>>
>>16708277
whenever the power drops off. most bikes, if you look at a dyno chart, will have a pretty obvious dropoff in power near redline. not really a thing on the SV650 because it has a pretty early/low peak with a wide powerband. i would ride mine to redline and i think most people who race them do, too.

fastest way, i believe, is when torque at the wheel in the next gear when you shift up and the RPM drops would be higher than what it's at before shifting. You'd have to factor in the change in gear ratios because of the torque multiplication difference, and it'd probably end up being close to redline anyway, it's not really worth bothering

>>
>>16705735
another 125ccs. 250 is the bare minimum. it's not "crotch JATO" powerful, just incapable of exceeding every speed limit in the country in first gear, and only sort of fast if you can into launches and well timed, seamless upshifts

oh wait
>nonamerican country

>>
250RR is in a weird place market wise though, it's clearly king shit of 250 performance in the way the R6 was for 600s when it showed up but that's not what the 300cc market in America is necessarily about. A CBR350RR would be going head to head with the RC390.

>>16708380

What's the point in making a performance version of a boring bike, then putting a boring commuter engine in it? If you want a tiny race replace then go all out or don't bother, it's a fucking stupid bike made by accountants who care more about the build cost and profit margins than fun.

That was the death blow but it was only keeping them on life support. Well not really even, only Suzuki and Kawasaki made actual mass market 750s, the RC45 and R7 were homologation specials.

The rules went to 1000cc because not racing R1s and Fireblades was dumb.

>>
Can someone explain the sacrifice sale meme to me?

Does it just mean I don't actually want to sell this, I want a price far above market value, and there's no room to negotiate and I'm going to whine because it's so bad for me that must means it's good for you even though it isn't.
>>
>>16708151
>and replacement parts were cheaper.

Multibrand mechanic here. Harley replacement parts are among the least expensive in the industry because of the absolutely unmatched aftermarket.

You can replicate almost any big twin from the 1940s to present without buying a single Motor Company nut, bolt or washer. Aftermarket specialty tools are cheap and plentiful too.

New Harleys are overpriced, but the aftermarket is the major reason Harleys stay popular over time.
>>
>>16708734
It means the only reason they're selling the bike is to make room for another bike, kid, wife, or some shit like that. Retards think saying that will make the buyer believe there's absolutely nothing wrong with it and they'd keep it and ride it forever if they could. It means about as much as adult owned or any of the other shit CL sellers say.
