>170 years ago, simple lead balls were replaced by ones with pointed tips, accuracy and range of firearms improved considerably.
>90 years ago aircraft engineers realized that they could considerably improve the flight performance of their aircraft by making them smoother and more streamlined.
In all these cases people worked out the basics of fluid dynamics which allowed them to move more quickly for less energy. Then came the 1960s and baring a few instances of sanity all the engineers were like "Durr...lets makez all da cars into boxy boxy boxes! Dat way they can look like ass AND not work as good!"
