Its rust. The simple reason is that water running down and dripping a lot "harder" through the gap between fender & the headlight, making rust form a lot easier if you dont keep it dry and you dont polish it

Congratulations, Anon. I got my FD about two and a half years ago, and am in love with it. Have fun and enjoy...

1) Premix... Use Idemitsu Premix Oil preferably
2) Drive it hard sometimes, to keep carbon buildup at bay.
3) Take care of it. They do require more TLC than a shitbox does. But, if you take care of it, it will take care of you.
4) Carry a spare set of plugs and tools to swap em.
5) DO NOT start the car, and shut it off before its been warmed up thoroughly. If you MUST, then rev the shit out of it right before shutting down to keep excess fuel from causing a hard start situation.
6) Check into IGN1A coils.
7) Get a Power FC.
8) Install an engine torque brace to help limit the chances of snapping the PPF mount off the diff nose.
9) The headlights suck. Install a REAL HID kit, like SakeBomb's.
10) Again, enjoy.

I've had it for around three or four days. my mom got a new car and they didn't want to sell it because it has a rebuilt title so they would get nothing for it so they basically just gave it to me.
It's been serviced at a euro dealership since they got it. regular oil changes. my dad took it in right before he gave it to me to make sure it wasn't going to fall apart. they guy who owns the dealership personally told him everything was in great conditions and has a lot of miles on it
also where the wolfsburg badge is supposed to go there's an s that I think is from a mini cooper

Painted the grill, trunk trim, n spoiler gold and finished all the wheels are black n $ now. Painted carpets n seat blacks doing the plastic shit black n gold soon. Spray painted the busted up door black in sum places looks a whole lot better now.

Yeh. My state checks tint on the yearly inspection so I have to stay legal unfortunately. If it wasn't for that, I'd risk the ticket.
That's why I'm asking if having the back darker looks bad, my fronts have to be 25% (so 30-35% film with the factory tint).

I'm the guy who posted the yellow 9-3 convertible. Pre-GM Saabs are an absolute pain in the arse to work on. Parts are terribly expensive or non existent. But! The bit about being on an enthusiast board... i bought mine for "the cost of repairs" when it was thrashed by the previous owner who bought it new in 1999 for $73,000 with all the options. 3k and a shitload of swearing later, it's a fun car. A quick little beast that nobody else bothered to maintain, so it's kind of special in a way.

Also may want to look into the iroc/z28 skirt pkg. It would make a huge difference. Other wise it looks fantastic. You and your Dad did a great job.
One thing to watch is too much torque will twist the body and with a t-top its a much bigger issue. That's why they always came with that huge I-beam down the middle underneath and a 305. The rare ones that did get a 350 were only auto's. Kept the shock load on the body during shifts to a minimum, but I have still seen quite a few start to separate where the roof meets the B-pillar in stock engine coupes.

We got the original for a few hundred bucks. Ended up buying a bunch of them for $200-500 and ripping out all the valueable parts and recycling the bodies for more than we paid for them. All the duplicate parts we got from those cars we sold. We got more money for the hatch on one than the car it was on cost.
After we put the 305 in you can notice the frame rocking a little bit from the torque.
That things a cop magnet. The first time i drove it a cop followed me home. I was 15 and it was only a five minute drive. Once I pulled out of the parking lot a cop turned around to follow me. Also the speedometer wasn't working at the time

Stick with it bro. I had an 86 GT years ago, and although it had its share of shortcomings I have very fond memories of that car.

Also, there is such a diverse community and aftermarket for those cars, you can pretty much do anything your heart desires to it. From what I can tell from the pic, it looks like you got one that's still in pretty decent shape. That's the hard part done. Now just make a plan and do some research on forums and vendors and the sky (and your budget) are the limit. I would suggest you start by replacing those hideous taillights.

My rule of thumb is this. Mileage only applies to suspension and drive train. A 302 is super cheap to rebuild (under $1000), transmissions are easy to find and upgrade parts are usually pretty cheap. Suspension wears a lot slower, but is super easy and inexpensive to replace/upgrade as well. As long as the body and sub-frames are OK then the car will last as long as you maintain it. And to be honest, if you're into it for 4k, you really like the car and should make it something you enjoy, instead of referring to it as your worst purchase ever. Like I said, be patient and come up with a plan. Once you've wrenched on it a few times you'll see how simple it is. You will regain the excitement you had when you bought it, and will have something you can call your own and be proud of.
