Anyone know what happened to the motorcycIe development cycle of the late 90's and 00's?

When I first got into motorcycles it seems like each Japanese manufacturer had a new model coming out every 4 years and a refresh of that model every 2 years with a bit more power, a bit less weight, etc. in between the complete redesigns.

But it seems like after 2008-2010 or so they stopped this and just stuck with a single design and only did minor updates over the years, some sticking with a single original design for 10 years (see R6).

It also seems like they are reusing parts a lot more. The CB1000R uses the same motor from the 2007ish CBR1000R. The GSXS1000 uses the same motor from the 2005ish GSXR1000R. Yamaha sold a bike that is essentially a 2002 R6 as the R6S for years along side the latest R6. Yamaha's basic engine architecture hasn't significantly changed since the first R1 in the late 90's (most significant is going from 5 valve to 4 valve heads and going crossplane crank with the last two generations of R1), it even originated in the 80's. And even all R6 motors since have been derived from it. The CBR1000RR has just now seen it's first major redesign since 208, and even then it's not a full redesign, the bike is still based largely on the 2008 bike.

It seems like manufacturers have pretty much given up on the 2 year update-4 year ground up redesign, bleeding edge development cycle where they constantly tried to one-up each other.

Now we get the same bikes year after year with slight changes to output, plastics/headlight, some suspension tweaks, etc. and the very occasional (but not complete) redesign (see 2015 R1, 2017 CBR1000RR)
It's like they forgot what "ground up" development is and got lazy.

>10 years ago you could have walked out of a dealership with an R6 for less than $10,000 out the door. As of last year you couldn't walk out with pretty much the same bike for less than $15,000. gee I wonder why people aren't motivated to buy new bikes.

Suzuki made the same GSXR's for over ten years. Gee I wonder why no one was rushing into showrooms to pick them up

All the R&D went into small bikes so that they'd have something cheaper to sell to poorfags and new riders, that's why there's a highly competitive 300cc market in North America now instead of the Ninja 250 and nothing else and even shits like BMW are getting into them.

So i'm in Korea and am getting a motorcycle soon, i'm trying to decide between

A: a cheap 125 scooter
B: a good scooter like a PCX 125
C: a semi auto delivery bike (korean made honda supercub) for stealthy parking, but only 110cc
D: an SYM wolf classic 125

I am limited to 125cc and have only ridden scooters before. I am really tempted by the SYM Wolf but ;earning to ride a manual in korea is intimidating

650,000W is about $650.

No, there's a difference between lifting with your back and supporting your body weight. The reason you should use your back on the bike is because it leaves your arms free to quickly shift position.

It's probably worth doing some situps, B-52s and other core exercises.

They said you should squat down with your knees instead of bending your back any time you reach down to pick something up, even if it's not heavy.
>>
>>16700022
You definitely shouldn't throughout the day but sportsbikes aren't designed to be ridden all day. It's a compromise.

The best solution is to ride full Sonic everywhere and let the airflow support you.

I've told you before but I'm not very fit and I've had back problems in the past with sciatica and find riding does not stress mine at all. It's all in your technique. I sit right up on the tank and never really bend my spine much, my back is nearly always up in a straight line whether I'm hanging off or tucked in.

And yes, keeping load off the controls is very important for spirited riding and what not because it allows the input to be as unfettered and as delicate as possible, the smoother you are the faster you are. Look at jorge lorenzo, he is the smoothest rider in motoGP, he will look slow as fuck while setting lap records it's so smooth and his hand will nearly be completely off the bars when taking right handers, zero pressure on the controls.

But it's not gonna matter if you take a bit of load on your hands while chilling on the highway or in traffic for a bit. Everybody does it.

Basically motorcycle manufacturers have maxed out motorcycles in the physical realm. It's not like you can improve the gyroscopic properties. It's going to stay the same indefinitely. Minor tweaks can be made to the geometry (wheelbase, height, etc...) to maximize the use in certain applications but it's a fucking engine on two wheels. That isn't much of a platform to work with. Sport bike manufacturers have intentionally hamstrung themselves when it comes to power so this is a characteristic they can't really compete over since no one is going to drastically exceed that 186/300 limit.

So what is left after that?

Electronics mainly - a thing that many people would argue isn't even desired. ABS, traction control, user modes, dynamic suspension, quick shifters, (all of which BMW and Ducati had in 2010, lol) and some meme electronics that show lean angle and brake pressure being applied etc..

There just isn't anything left to do man. At least not in the world of sport bikes
>>
>>16700124

>>

>all of which BMW and Ducati had in 2010, lol)

worth noting early gen electronics all pretty much sucked, the S1000RR's in particular was known for it's awful wheelie control that sent the front wheel bouncing up and down.

The only first gen road TCS system that worked well was aprilia's APRC.

Is there any reason for me not to buy a 2017 Triumph Street Twin for my first bike? (2016 if I can find a good deal)

The biggest reason to not buy a new bike as your first is that you will probably drop the bike.
The Street Twin is nice, but pretty expensive compared to other entry level bikes. The Fz-07, SV650, and Z650 are almost $2k cheaper and weigh less as well.
Moto Guzzi V7 is another option, Guzzi just dropped the price.

I know it's two different animals, but I was told the same thing about cycling and I've been racing and training for like six years now without a single issue.

I would buy used, but the used market here is so small. There's tons of 250cc "sport bikes" and cheap V-stars but nothing that looks even remotely like I'd want it. Some cheap newer rebels but their price point isn't far off from that of the Triumph.

Something to think about. I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for anything I can find. The nearest Triumph dealer is about 150 miles away from me anyway, so I'll start expanding my search area the closer it gets to April.

Are there any other bikes that have the same look/power as the ST? I've read Ducati scrambler and maybe even the HD Sportster but they're all in the same price bracket.
>>
>>16700558
My Triumph (older to be fair, carb model Bonneville T100) has been tuned from around 40 crank horsepower to nearly 80. They're not weak, just badly tuned. High comp pistons and some better breathing/fuelling and they're pretty good.
>>
>>16700555
Of those the V7 looks the best to me. Gotta be honest I was attracted to the Triumph mostly for looks/Steve McQueen.

Trying to stay away from the typical sport bike look. Never much fancied them. For one reason or the other.

Owned it over 3 years, thrashed the life out of it, taken it down a 1/4 a few times, serviced it late some times, still running great. Coming up to the point where it will need the cam chain tensioner doing and the valves adjusted but that's maintenance for you.

I really like the way that the Street win looks, but the $9,250 price point has turned me off. For the slightly more you could get an XSR900 which is a much faster bike.
What are you planning on using the bike for, commuting, touring? Have you thrown a leg over any of the modern nakeds or the Triumph?

Commuting mostly. I have a car, which I love, but I put very few miles on it because I bicycle most places. A motorcycle would replace my car for when I wanna get somewhere fast and not sweaty, and relegate my car to a winter-mobile.

So reliability is important to me. The purported 10K service interval for the triumph intrigues me for that reason.

Kicking around some fire roads and what not out here in the country side (live in the middle of nowhere).

Basically looking for fun, reliable first bike and I really like the looks of the retro-modern bikes.

The Moto Guzzi does look appealing. Coincidentally they have a few for sale at the dealership where I was gonna go look at Triumphs. I've got $4k saved up so far for a bike, or a down payment on one, so I'd only be about $2000+some haggling from being able to buy a 2015 V7 with cash. (Though, i'd probably still try to finance it for six months for that credit boost)

You can have the looks and the performance. They just chose not to. Reminds me of the 2005-2009 Mustangs. Retro styling gone horribly wrong.

Or "neo-retro" as it says on the Yamaha site.

I imagine they want as much oil flowing through the egine as possible considering its air cooled, cutting the transmission out of the loop shortens how far the oil must flow.
>>
>>16701213
What upgrades does the Abarth have besides a few bits of bodywork? Yamaha just says different bars, a solo seat, and a bikini fairing. The only thing more sport bike about it is it comes with an Akrapovic exhaust

Here Yamaha lists the "upgrades"

Considering this for a first bike. 450cc, dude selling it $2500.
I used to ride dirt bikes(biggest I had was a 250cc) when I was a kid, so I'm familiar with riding.
Anyone familiar with 80's Era Hondas and/or cafe racers? I'd be using it as a daily, maybe 40 mile commute round trip plus small distance travel around town, with the occasionally Canyon ride.
Basically, how do Cafes, in the general sense, ride? Also, I never plan on 2upping.
>>
>>16701381
no its fine just leave it

if it starts to become worse, you can drain the radiator and reseal it with some teflon tape or thread locker or something
>>

>>
>>16701414
2.5K is WAY too much for someone Else's problem.

For 3k you can get a 2-3 year old 300cc bike and not have to deal with carbs or drum brakes.

If it was a clean bone stock UJM that wasn't cafe'd I would consider maybe offering 1800 with a straight face and a wad full of cash.

>>
>>16701414
Well that depends, there are some good cafe racers and some bad ones.

The bad ones are the overly hipstered out cafe racers. They'll be missing dumb shit that you'd find useful for a daily rider/travelling around town like an air filter or fenders. And a lot of the customization the the frame leaves the bike handling worse than it did in it's uncafe'ed state. The bars are usually pretty aggressive too so idk if that's your up of tea.

That all said, not all cafe racers are shit. But you'll most often find shit mods of cb450s that have been mutilated but cost like 6k.
>>
>>16701477
You are a cuck not for being new to bikes but for falling for the cafe-racer meme.

Don't by a fucked 80's cafe bike as your first bike, you'll spend more time wrenching than riding, and since you don't send technical in the least that'll be a hard process to learn.

Scrape together $500 more and buy a bike made in the last 15 years with fuel injection.

Or do you enjoy looking for parts that haven't been made since 2 years before you were born?

I've been down that road, skip it.

What? Look, almost every single thing produced in Italy right now is produced with the precise intent of spending the least possible, quality isn't really a thing they bother with. In case of Ducati they cut corners where they can. And I'm not defending this, I'm just trying to give you context.

But if you don't ignore what I've posted, you can see that scarce people still excel.
