I got to thinking: All-wheel drive isn't usually used on bikes because of the load transfer during acceleration and the fact that it means higher weight for the bike. But wouldn't AWD be really helpful when you're going through sand etc.? And not just because of better distribution of the drive across a larger surface, but also because if you lose traction and don't go anywhere, the spinning wheels will stabilize the bike and prevent you from dropping it.
Also greater control during willies if the front can be stablized / destabilized by spinning it up or slowing it down while in the air.

People utilize ebay as an advertising platform basically. You still go see it and pay cash, the seller then removes the auction or something.

No, it would only make you understeer and die since you can't correct it in 2 wheels
There is an italian using it in dirtbikes, but it's togglable and doesn't allow for different wheel speeds

It isn't used on bikes because driving the front wheel is an utter bitchcunt.

Way harder to make an AWD bike than AWD car for much less benefit. Which is saying something when off-road automobile racers still prefer 2WD because they're more reliable, have better suspension travel, and weigh less.

there is an article in a moto magazine about 2WD bikes, there is a unit using a hydraulic pump and slave motor that powered the front wheel. They installed it on a GSXR if I remember right (definitely some kind of sports bike) and the results were promising but fell out of interest due to weight and the ever improving ability of traction control to manage absurd amount of power on the track.

>>
>>16693340
Even in cars the only place single drivetrain AWD is really the thing is loose surface rally and ice racing, where the traction is low but the surface is relatively smooth. On higher traction surfaces even FWD is faster up to like 350hp unless you force them to be the same weight and on rougher terrain the drivetrain complexity becomes an issue.

Then you apply that to a bike where it adds a relatively high degree of complexity compared to the incredibly simple rear chain drive and the front wheel is so unloaded it isn't even on the ground all the time. They're probably okay (and really easy to ride) enduros and the military uses them but they seem like a reliability and maneuvering nightmare for MX or really nasty shit.
>>
>>16693340
it's a frankly awful idea.

In a racing situation the front tyre of a motorcycle is used to it's 100% maximum grip, it cannot take any more force mid corner. The most dangerous part of the corner in terms of likelihood to crash is the exact moment the throttle is cracked, this can overload the front tyre very easily, you will see this crash in motoGP a lot, that's when they fall about an inch to the ground.

now imagine we're also sending torque to the front wheel when we do that, it's the worst idea ever.

it'd have to be computer controlled to not kick in at that moment and only come online as the bike is picked up, but very soon after corner exit the bike already has very little weight on the front wheel.

So it'd have a useful range that is very small, about midway through corner exit and nowhere else.

wouldn't be worth the complexity or unsprung mass.
>>
>>16693421

yes i know the bike, they used the same system in the 2-trac WR.

Yamaha used to own a significant portion of ohlins, that's why ohlins used to test out a lot of their tech on yamaha bikes.

The YZR500 for example at one point in the early 90s had an electronic active ohlins rear shock in it (CES suspension)

I think reviewers mainly praised the WR 2-tracs ability to climb sand dunes and not much else really.

Not necessarily, it depends.
If the new exhaust is a lot more free-flowing, you will experience a small loss of mid-range power and slightly worse throttle response on modern bikes due to lean stock fuelling.
Full exhausts alter the air-fuel ratio even more drastically and consequently likely necessitate a retune.

consider the following:

>Anyone can place a fixed price bid on any car, and the buyer is then chosen by draw. The fixed price is € 1400 (Finland, ca. USD 1400 ) or 6500 SEK (Sweden, ca. USD 1000). Refusing to sell is grounds for having one's competition license revoked. Personal equipment such as the seat and safety harness are not included in the sale. This type of system eliminates the motivation for sinking extensive amounts of work and money into a folk racing car.

could a mechanism like this work for a motorcycle road racing series? because that would be fucken dope

(otoh maybe bike costs aren't all that big of a deal compared to tires, track fees.... idk)
>>
>>16694495
Claiming rules are pointless in low end motorcycle racing because rider skill is literally the only meaningful factor. You can't spend your way to a championship in any non professional series. I assure you that. If I'm 2 seconds off the podium with my current bike, there's not a 600 class bike in the world that will give me a win.

>>
>>16694808
I get that, and I think that a lot of their bikes are beautifully designed from an aesthetic standpoint, but they are the biggest motorcycle producer in the USA. Why are they not using state of the art technology on all of their models? I think they can still do that while retaining their look and feel.
>>
>>16694844
There's a dichotomy within Harley. If you make it too advanced, traditionalists don't want it. If you leave it as is, people who don't like Harley don't like that there's not much innovation.

The exception being a v rod but those aren't really that great.
>>
>>16694844
Because that's not why harley guys buy harley. they want that old school look and feel. Which is great. It's lame to pay today's price for yesteryears technology. But if they know people will pay it, why not charge it.

There's other more tech oriented Cruisers to buy though
>>
>>16694781
I liked having a Harley because they're great platforms for customization.

Sure, you can customize any motorcycle, but often times, customized metric cruisers just end up trying really hard to look like a Harley, but end up looking cheap and messed up. Also, I can find all kinds of custom, one of a kind parts that are hand made by various small time chopper builders and shops that fit Harely's only, and they're usually really cheap.

The thing is, however, a lot of these small time chopper builders are starting to move away from Harleys and are doing awesome custom metrics and sport bikes now, OR they're modding Harleys so that it's basically a Harley motor with a sport bike setup.

Also, having said all this, I just switched to sport bikes recently. The reason being, despite my love for Harleys, was that I wanted to try out some of this Japanese performance perfection for myself.

>>16694938
I mean it's cheap to CUSTOMIZE assuming you don't go to the stealership for parts. Chopper shops makes some really cool parts that you won't find anywhere else and they all bolt right onto a Harley for not much money at all.

I've done Harley customization and metric cruiser customization, and it was cheaper and easier on the Harley.

Ad far as them being more expensive off the showroom floor despite having inferior technology, yes, I agree with OP, it's kinda dumb.

It would be cool, back in the day indian acquired a luxury motorcycle company that made badass i4 bikes, it would be dope to see the design make a comeback.

How are the Urals, expensive to buy/ maintain?
>>
>>16695247
Aight.

>>16695261
I'm just hoping they don't try to get too big too fast ya know. Slow and steady would be a great way to build and keep going. Should be fairly easy with how much emissions has been kicking harley in the teeth. I don't see that getting any easier for them within major changes
>>
>>16695281
Its looking good for Indian so far, in 4 years theyve made a larger percentage of polaris's income than Victory could in 18.

>buy used for cheap
>maintain it
>be happy

I paid 6k for mine. It's a 2006 and I hit 14,100kms today. Bought it with around 11,500. I haven't ever gone on a distance ride with it yet but the only ways in/out of my city are on highways with 75mph speed limits and everyone goes 85. Ural will maybe go 70 but it is not going to like it.

I've had no issues to report so far other than a turn signal relay that went out ($5) and a gasket that slipped out of the final drive which dropped oil. That took about 30 minutes to repair and I got a box of 20 gaskets for $17 shipped from Russia. So long as you aren't afraid to get your hands dirty and are capable of turning a wrench you shouldn't have any problems.

Buy used, buy one with at least 10k on it. They come with a basically full coverage warranty for 2 years brand new, so if you buy a used one with decent mileage any issues should be sorted out already. There is a really excellent community of old farts who know these things inside and out, and always offer their knowledge. You can also find really good deals on the black market of the soviet steeds forum

Lots of reports of people having gone through several engines in the warranty period, those people usually sell them before the warranty is up. The QC just isn't there, and 6k for that bike isn't really good considering the specs. The only reason they can charge that much is because they are pretty much the only factory sidecar rig right now.

Britbong here, I am an inexperienced man, new to handling the wonders from the Far East, so tell me, /dbt/, why should I shack up with an old, used up Jap bitch with a stretched pipe that has passed through hands of many men, such as a Honda Hornet or an SV650, if I can have a hardly used, young, supple Korean waifu for less money?
