Some hills are so steep that you will roll back even with the clutch engaged to the point of vibrating. The only thing you can do is heel toe, use the handbrake, or just be fast with your gas. If you use the last method, the car will inevitable roll back at least an inch or two.

I avoid doing it because I want to practice my clutch control. I rarely do the handbrake start anymore as I can use the clutch just fine. It's only when assholes pull up a micrometer behind my bumper and lay on the horn the moment the light turns that I do it for safety.
