You'll get almost no cop attention in it too, that is if there are cops in Tassie in the first place.
>>
>>16687702
the cops will rape you if you drive anything cheap and rwd, eg ke70 or r31, i had a mate who got defected 3 times in one day because his 180 was in primer looking full drift spec with no front bumper,
youll still get attention in any 'aca approved rare import' but not to the same extent
>>
>Sucking dicks at the local public toilet on weekends.
>>
>>16687714
That's the point. Compared to old Jap shit he'll be invisible in an S3. It really looks no different to the A3, and the A3 is an utterly unremarkable commuter for badgewhores.
>>
>>16687714
>no front bumper
if your radiator and other components are exposed its defectable. also "danger" to pedestrians, ive known of people failing rego for having cracked/jagged bumpers.
>>
>>16687734
how are these not so popular? why the fuck does no one want a car thats reasonably quick with no cop attention?
>>
>>16687714
>youll still get attention in any 'aca approved rare import' but not to the same extent
No he won't, anything respectable (i.e Audis and BMWs that aren't modded hazzimy machines) will go completely unnoticed by anyone. The import part won't come into it at all since they're common cars, not some one of a kind import.
>>
>>16687750
1, that was me
2, i was referring to the jap import, not euro

Then why do most of you live in a city and act like hipster faggots if you aren't that?
>>
>>16687746

Because they're old, unreliable and expensive to fix.

You can buy a nice, clean 180sx with what it would cost to replace the glass gearbox in an S3...and you will be replacing the gearbox.

>why the fuck does no one want a car thats reasonably quick with no cop attention
Haldex isn't full-time AWD and the S3 has utterly unremarkable looks. Also it's not that quick (154kW to 165kW) and it's cheaper to get a performance model (GTI, R32, etc.) Golf.

Nice interior, though. Leather seats were a standard feature.

I totally get that man, we've all been there, i'm just trying to steer you clear of winding up in a situation like...

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2343891

..I won't bother pointing out which posts are mine, but the point is that Audi's are insanely expensive to fix and the gearboxes on the AWD models are garbage.... and buying an older one is a REALLY bad idea, especially if you're on a tight budget.

That aside, I reckon it's a toss-up between that and something like a Ps'-marked Subaru that will cost a ton to unfuck.

>and buying an older one is a REALLY bad idea, especially if you're on a tight budget
The same applies to most sports cars.
>>
>>16687814
Nobody said the parts were cheaper. It was that it would cost less to get an S3 running nicely than it would to fix a P-plater's abused Subaru.

Given your desire for no body roll and "AWD" for snow, and your taste for abused riceboxes this was the best alternative.
>>
>>16687810

Honestly if you rang the guy up, I doubt there would be anything too wild going on under the bonnet.

It is pretty fucking scary how hard they are getting to find though, was a really nice bone stock one in Adelaide for sale last week, 9k, one owner. The temptation was real.

I'm old enough that a 180sx was something any high school chump could afford with a years with of savings from working in a supermarket part time....now, I honestly feel bad for a lot of the younger guys trying to find something fun that's reasonable value and reliable, I mean they're all scrambling over the same stuff we were a decade ago and not only has the shit not gotten younger, it's even more expensive than it was then and is thrashed to shit.
>>
>>16687833
not the dude u replied to but if theres such a ginormous market for rwd turbo coupes why did nissan and other companies cut themselves out of such a huge market around the turn of the millennium
>>

>>
>>16687828

>It was that it would cost less to get an S3 running nicely than it would to fix a P-plater's abused Subaru.

Having owned and spent unholy amounts of money on both Aud's and Subaru's over the years i'd have to politely disagree.

Both are going to eat money, no doubt about it, but the Subaru will eat less, be easier to source parts for second hand/in wreckers and is a whole lot easier to work on yourself.

I'd say just hang out for the right buy, there was a clean, one owner GT Forester on Gumtree not long ago, 140,000k's, manual, $4250, something like that with regular maintenance, timing belt at 200,000k's will see you right for 100,000+ k's no problems.

Oh for sure, but it's not as if those cars make up the bulk of those manufacturers sales.

But that's basically what happened in the early 2000's though, we moved away from dedicated sports cars into more practical four door cars with some serious punch and that's continued right up until today, some of the FWD Turbo hatches out there these days are just fucking bonkers.

It would be great to see more cars like the BRZ/86 though, just with perhaps a little less fat and a little more poke.

I always laugh when I'm reminded of that. It's a good indication of how butthurt they were with the Toyobaru twins gaining global critical acclaim, they just had to say "w-w-we can too!".

They then produced a clay model with no disclosed powerplant, no viability and no real intention of ever putting such a vehicle into production.
>>
>>16688005
It's a pity. And even more a pity that Ghosn doesn't decide to give Nii-san and Mitsu a revived Silvia/Starion to actually compete with the Toyobaru. Call it a continuation of the Evo/STi rivalry that advanced the two over and over.

Thoughts on this? I already have a daily and work ute, but have been thinking about a fun project car. I grew up wrenching on dirt bikes/farm beaters so I can't see it being too difficult and the money isn't a huge issue.

Just checked it out but I don't know a whole lot about old VW's. It sounded fucking awesome, drove well (although putting it in reverse was weird), shifted fine, brakes were a little weak but the owner mentioned that in the ad, I don't live very far away so it wouldn't be a problem to get it home. Cool owner, has two other Beetles (one Subi powered) as well as a nice GT Foz and seemed to know his stuff. He was even willing to throw in a bunch of other parts not listed in the ad.
>>
>>16691371
Old VWs, Mercs and BMWs are great and simple to work on. The old Beetles had really simple engines too.
>>
>>16691395

Yeah I really liked how simple everything seemed, it was seriously just like a big go kart, everything was just right there and easy to get to.
>>
>>16691371
Get a good mechanic to look it over, those things can rust like nothing else
But if you've driven it and are happy with it then go nuts. My main advice for someone looking at a beetle is to not expect it to be anything more than an old primitive pos, but obvs you're fine with that

Ouch, thanks for the heads up. Do you know if that's a poor fit or a poor quality part porblem?
>>
>>16693143
I don't know enough about the particular problem to answer that, but it's not something that preventative maintenance can take care of - the chain guides wear, the chains themselves stretch or snap, or the tensioner fails. It's just bad luck if it happens to your Navara, but usually they'll get noisy before they fail completely.

Different bloke here, but the D-Max is fantastic, at least the current range (2012/2013 onwards) is sick. My dad's got one, and spare for the ride quality (not bumpy but very floaty, constantly moving around in my seat), it is fantastic.

You can't really go wrong with a TD Isuzu engine. I'd imagine the earlier generations of rodeo/ d-max are pretty good, too.

>Please call or SMS the word "Starion" to mobile and call shall be returned.

Holy shit the autism is real.

And honestly, it *might* be worth that if it's genuinely been rebuilt from the ground up with all new parts. Fuck knows who would spend that, but I really don't see how it's that wildly different to the 80-100k people spend on Hakosuka's or muscle cars that are worth hundreds of thousands etc

80's shit is well on it's way to becoming those cars.

As baby boomers cark it, Gen X takes over and have the funds, time and gall to ask three times what a car is worth because (((investment))).

Unless it's a car worth shit loads to begin with (e.g. rich kid playtoys such as collector ferraris), cars really aren't a fantastic investment.

Turning 20k into 40k by holding onto a car for 15 years might sound sick to normal cunts, but it's really not a great investment. People reckon flipping cars is simple as shit but they never take into account insurance costs, storage costs etc.

By the time you've made the amazing profits claimed, you've paid it all in time and running costs.

I understand buying heaps of shit, restoring them and making a buck over a short period of time, though.

As mentioned, the only real mechanical wekness of the YD25 CAN be timing chains. There's a double row timing chain upgrade for them. Other than that, fit a provent and block the EGR and you'll be motoring happily for decades to come.
Honestly though for that coin, I'd be looking specifically for ML Tritons. The one with the 3.2.
>>
>>16693803
Or as >>16693215 said, the D-Max is a solid bet. As long as it's one of the later 4JJ1 common rail powered ones. The earlier direct injection 4JX1 powered Rodeos were pieces of shit that ultimately came more expensive to keep on the road than the vehicle was worth.

what should i expect from it? i know they are heavy cars but can the weight be overcome with good mods?

or are they stricktly straightline cars
really want to hear what its like to drive a commo, what does it feel like?
>>
>>16698114
Do you want "Basic" mods?

Well first of all get a car with 100-200k milage on it for around 3-6k+ is around the going rate for a LS vt-vy with nothing wrong with it.

Ok now you need to unfuck the horrid front rotors (assuming slotted/drilled arnt in there already) and use Bendix ultimate pads.

Then 18" x 8" front 245's is the widest you can run without going coilovers (recommended but not required)

Then stick some Monroe GT Sports front shocks and HEAVY duty rear monroe shocks and a set of FE2 spec king springs

Now assuming nothing else needs doing (bushes or whatever) you can now look at the engine.

Get a Mafless tune should get you 300-350rwhp or 220-240rwkw minimum

IF it has a stock exhaust pick up a used one around 2.5" or 3" is the go these days

If you want better handling you will need to mod the chassis front end as its a wet noodle, i got some reinforcement done but i havent got a strut brace yet as i dont need it.

they grip suprisingly well and are only bottlnecked in the corners grip wise by 'narrow' 245's, if you somehow can fit wider like 255 on the front with coilovers go for it, they handle suprisingly well.
>>

What speed are we talking about?

Stock tyres most twisties you'll top out at 60-80km/h and get mad squeels

on 245/45/r18 square you'll be able to hook with those suspention mods and get around 85-110+ as the car LOVES to slide and oversteer (irs with mad camber and caster because its dumped on its ass)

Loves to drift and also Hook in, doesnt feel like a 1600kg car

The only thing these dunnydoors dont like cornering wish is hills that go down and away from the car/driving line as it initiantes the mcfloppyfrontalchassis problem i was talking about.

They are slow comparatively. 1000s will do 0-100 in 2.5 seconds and still be climbing first gear.

>>16698889
The are LAMS bikes that'll probably do 250kph. Some of the old 90s 250s will do 200 which is crazy considering what they are.

Higher capacity bikes are electronically limited to 299 or so (186mph) from the factory usually.

>>
>>16698919
>the engine weighs a ton and wont go anywhere on dirt
Hyperthetically is doesnt have enough torque or is it down to gearing?
>>
>>16698916
This, even dumber than 'casual self-employed'.
>>
>>16698904
They're really "only" doing 2.5 second 0-100 because of gearing. You can gear down and drop the time fast but they get too wheelie happy. Worth remembering Hayabusa are heavy as well.

Modern electronics are starting to solve that though. The current S1000RR can do 0-300 in 13 seconds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX-NvCtpuh4

You'd be surprised actually. A lot stay limited because it saves on insurance. That and you usually need a power commander or similar to turn it off.

>>16698921
They only make about 21nm and only above 10000rpm.
>>
>>16698921
Both. It has no tork anywhere you'd need it on dirt.

How much does compliance cost for imports? I want to get the facelifted DC2 Integra but I've never imported a vehicle before. Seeing as it's only a 4cylinder econobox that looks fancy it couldn't be that bad, right?

I'd recommend doing your research before importing, ask around on local forums, even use FB to talk to some importers to get a rough idea.

I'd put aside an extra 10k after the cost of the car just in case. When I imported the costs were roughly:

>1k brokers
>3.3k shipping
>2.2k compliance service
>1.3k roadworthy + parts for compliance
>1k rego
Total:
8.8k

RVF400 gets ~240kmh out of it, geared different from stock and with a 50ish kg rider. Thats probably the fastest you're going to get with a LAMS bike. Unrestricted 650's just hit 250kmh.

Is it worth going on a diet and shit to lose weight for racecar purposes? I weight 85 kilos.
>>
>>16699044
ive got the grille and radiator out of the way and jacked up the engine for clearance for the camshaft to come out no problems. Its the fact that i have to slip the camshaft through tightass holes whilst putting leverage on 4 inches of the shaft. It was so easy when i was walking it out through the bottom but i really dont feel like taking out the engine again
