vinales had the second best race pace (behind marquez) at sepang too, so it only being the 2nd day of the phillip island test makes no sense.

He has very strong race pace in the bag, yeah he set the headline laps on flyers but they mostly do.
>>
>>16682032
>but they mostly do.
Not Rossi, it was in the news you posted. Also Vinales probably got a ready package while they left all the real testing to Rossi.
>>
>>16682036
rossi didn't set any headline times.

My point is even if you're going to say, nah vinales only set his really REALLY fast laps on flyers it doesn't really matter because his race pace is excellent too.

This year is gonna be marquez vs maverick.
>>
>>16682048
Nah it'll be Rossi v Marquez like the past years. Vinales is great but not his first year on his Yamaha.

some of it is good advice, a lot of it is just stuff that's gonna throw you further off the actual scent, like him talking about needing to have 60% of your weight on the back tyre, getting all of your braking done before entering a corner, his thing about "once the throttle is opened it is smoothly rolled on" is the bane of track instructors nightmares from how many problems it causes (hence the OP webm showing maintenance throttle, a period inbetween accelerating and braking where the throttle is opened to stop deceleration but the bike is not acceleration as all your available grip is being used to turn the bike ).

Any brits here?
I'm starting to consider getting a bike (probably won't go through with it for a few more years) and I'm looking at the different licences and I'm not sure how to interpret the wording for the A2 Category.
What does it mean by "bike mustn’t be derived from vehicle more than twice its power"

Also, this might sound a bit silly, but would getting an A2 licence mean I can drive vehicles that come under the AM and A1 categories?
>>
>>16682337
It means that restricting a 96+ hp bike to 48 will not make it A2 legal. So you can't get a busa, restrict it and ride as a total noob.
Yes, A2 includes AM and A1.
>>
>>16682337
>bike mustn't be derived from vehicle more than twice it's power
If the bike originally had over 70kw you can't ride it, basically. If it had 70kw you could get it restricted.

You can ride anything from the lower tiers.

I've run 15/44 and 13/44 on mine. 15/44 is just about perfect for dual sporting IMO but you'll have to work it a lot harder on the really slow trails. 13/44 is great for the really tight trails but annoying for road riding because pretty much anything above 45mph gets quite revvy.
>>
>>16682379
I wouldn't mind riding an f4i. The community that owns them has nothing but good things to say
>>
>>16682379
IIRC not all those bikes were fuel injected for all of those years. I think the GSXR600, R6 and ZX6R got EFI in 03. Also make sure you look for the F4i (2001+), not the normal F4 which is carbed.

All the japanese 600 supersports are pretty comparable in quality and performance. Not sure about the SV1000. They're all pretty low maintenance too. The F4i seems to be the most popular bike from that generation and has tons of aftermarket. What I did when looking to buy a supersport was just search through craigslist for any and all of them and just pick up whichever I was able to find a good deal on first.

>>16682379
But why? The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.
>>
>>16682418
But the DR-Z400S is objectively the best bike for any level rider.
>>
>>16682423
Except beginners.

So /dbt/ my brakes squeak. I'm considering sanding the pads and scotch-brite-ing the rotor.

Also when I remove the caliper if the piston extends how do I go about pushing it back. I imagine I shouldn't push on the pad directly

Its seat is pretty hard which is somewhat uncomfortable, but it's pretty wide which means it doesn't actually make me as sore after hours of riding like my other bikes do.
Also I have literally 0 prior experiences with clipons or any bikes that make me lean forward at all. Just not used to it yet (have barely ridden it so far because I'm not going to insure multiple bikes during winter when I barely get to ride) or maybe I'm just not cut out for sportbikes. I know the forward lean is slightly less than other supersports but it's still infinitely more than my other bikes on which I sit completely upright. I think higher pegs on this bike might actually help with the comfort because it would help me support my body with my knees.

It's strange because everyone says sportbikes are not comfortable but I feel like a forward position is more comfortable for riding since more of your weight is on the arms and the back has to work less. I'm really curious to test ride a sportbike.
>>
>>16682588
>Maybe I sit with the back too straight?
That should lift weight of your balls, not extra weight on it.

Your back should be strong enough to keep you upright, your arms get tired.
>>
>>16682588
>more of your weight is on the arms and the back has to work less
This is absolutely horrible. You're supposed to hold onto the bike with your legs and support your weight with your back. No weight at all should be on your hands.
Back gets sore/tired? Go do some deadlifts or get a comfier bike.
>>
>>16682588
Actually you should put as little weight as possible on the arms to avoid making unwanted steering input. Therefore your back will have to work HARDER in a forward riding position.
>>
>>16682587

It's actually the opposite for both for me.
If I seat straight the ball are more on touch with the seat.
My arms never get tired.
>>16682597
I see. I already hold on the bike with the knees but I feel like a more forward riding position is more comfortable.

I was definitely on top of Mt. Stupid when I had my 250. I would scrape pegs on that thing every day and go way too fast on roads I'd never ridden.
Valley of Despair was about two years ago on my DRZ, when I had a couple close calls and learned my limits, but at that time I was super depressed and didn't even care if I crashed so I would get drunk and hoon recklessly around the city even though I knew I was shit. I'm both more skilled and less reckless now.

You're just ignorant mate. Spend some time on an actually comfy bike that actually fits you and you will change your mind, specifically something where you can sit straight up and down without the need to support yourself in any direction. I am specifically talking about daily/travel riding. Sportbike is definitely "comfy" for spirited twisties if you know what I'm trying to say.

Of course it's pointless asking here, but has any of you ever tried a hub centre steered motorbike? Is it better?
Also, why don't they use a direct steering, like a normal suspension but without the oil inside? Wouldn't it be more direct, hence eliminating the downside of such design?

It is meant to mitigate weight transfer and suspension movement during acceleration and braking. That's part of the reason why BMW uses that kind of surgeon for their r and k series of bikes.

I know what it is, I was asking if any of you actually rode one and could tell how good it is. Also, can't they keep the same suspension setting but steer with unloaded telescopic steering rods instead of that steering mechanism?
>>
>>16683298
Then you basically have the paralever system. The telescopic tube is just filled with oil no springs, the suspension is underneath the tank.
>>
>>16683277
You have to move the handlebars first towards straight position.

You should be able to wiggle them a bit. I still have like 5cm of movement when it's on lock. Have to turn it a bit straight before I can unlock them.
>>
>>16683456
Just ride in a circle for eternity
>>
>>16683456
Try moving the bars so there's weight off the lock, like when you're doing that with a steering wheel lock when starting a car.
>>
>>16683456
The key is to raise/put a little forward/upward pressure on the bar as you attempt to unlock it. It has probably been a while since the lock was lubricated last, so put a little graphite or other dry spray lubricant on the key and run it in and out a few times.

Is it because America has compulsory insurance that they blindly rip you off? I don't understand. I got 3 quotes on the day when I purchased my bike and all were within $50 of each other so I just paid for the cheapest. $300 for a years insurance on a $12,500 bike didn't make me think twice.

thank you, I'll try to keep her clean and spotless as long as I'm riding the bike on the street.
Got a second set of fairing and a second exhaust to do trackdays and hobby races. Not that this bike is competitive in any way, due to its relatively low power for a 1000cc bike compared to modern bikes. But than again I'm neither lol

>>16684061
completely forgot the painted and polished wheels. The main reason why I bought the bike back then.

Its a good bike. The suspension is iffy on the fz07 and fz09 but the 07 is a great beginner bike or second bike

Nice all rounder and do everything bike.
If you ride two up or with a lot of luggage often and fast you will probably notice that the rear suspension is not damped enough. Not a problem riding solo though.
Not the overall best sound but does okay.
Good milage.
You can be pretty fast with it and theres really no big fault.
Rode the bike a few thousand km ask me anything.

I've read that the Fz-09 has a snatchy throttle, does the Fz-07 have the same problem?

> is it decent enough for street riding
It is hard to write something without letting the suspension sound bad.
In short:
No it is more than decent for solo riding
Long:
It still is a middle class bike and for what you pay it is very good. Sure a street triple that costs almost twice as much is better but thats not the point here. With some sticky tires you can easily ride the ire to the edge without ever having a bad feeling. Even with all my luggage >>16684230 I could easily anger big bikes. Sure the back was hanging a bit but still absolutely predictable. It is a lot better that this probably sounds now. Still from my point of view no need necessarily upgrade the suspension even for fast street riding

Its an old village somewhere up in the mountains in italy. Some of the base walls might be easily 150 years or older. But I ain't no expert.

It's pretty common to find places like that here in Italy, or all Europe.

You get somebody with a license to ride it or transport it in a truck.

Where I live, you do a written exam and get your license with a bunch of restrictions; like you can only ride with other people who have their license, have to go under 60, etc. You can get practice in before the skills test this way. It's not like that wherever you live?
