I'm stoked. I've got to fold them in when in town though as they get in the way of my feet and shifting.
>>
So, I bought a Honda Nighthawk, had trouble starting it before I rode it home but didn't think it was a big deal

A week later try to start it and it only went WHIRR

Push started it and rode around the neighborhood and realized it was spewing out oil when I returned

Turns out the previous owner fucking unbolted the starter and never bolted it back, so it felt like the starter gear was spinning freely cause it actually was and wasn't connected at all

He used the bolts to screw in the battery bracket instead, which you'd think would be a red fucking flag since the bolts were 3 times too long and didn't screw in nearly all the way

What careless shit have you overlooked recently, /dbt/?

I want to get a bike to commute to work. I like the fuel efficiency and affordability of smaller engines (200cc to 450cc range), but I'm 6'1". Anything I could use as a commuter in that range that won't make me feel like a circus bear? Perhaps an Enduro? They tend to be taller.

Wat. Sure it's not as pleasant as a touring bike but it's certainly not a big deal. I pretty regularly do long distance rides on my bike.

Also, Nick Sanders.

If your bike is moving at all then the weight isn't really a big deal.

My first bike was a Nighthawk 700, it's like 550lbs wet, I was a little nervous but after not even a week I was totally comfortable with it

That's arguing against me, yet not arguing against my point that he'd be fine on a 500-950cc Japanese cruiser, bikes known to be extremely user friendly, cost effective and reliable. This fallacy is considered ad hominem, and instead of engaging in the argument shifts the focus to something entirely different than what is being discussed.

Third, not only that but you've filled to get your facts straight and know I have owned three motorcycles.

Central Vermont Rider here.

Winter riding is horrific in this part of the state (and most). We don't have a "clear road" policy like New York, so there are entire roads that are nothing but frozen slush and ice.
The frost heaves are horrendous, not to mention the pot holes. Fork rebuilds are big business in this neck of the woods.

They use tons of salt. That's the one thing keeping me from riding at this point. Don't want salt all up in my metal bits and no heated garage to wash it off.

The summer riding here though, is absolutely amazing on some of the roads.

how good are royal einfields??

I'm really into old school cool and the look just appeals to me even though I'm aware of their rather lackluster performance.

I used to own a kawasaki ninja 650 but I sold in since a.) the guy buying it payed for it more than I did (despite me droppjng it)
b.) it didn't do too well on the shitty roads and traffic I have here in the city.

I'm sorta looking for a more relaxed motorcycle for commuting to uni and cruising every now and then

royal gets bonus points for having a dealership near me that actually let's me take test drives

He only charges $20 per wheel and all the liberal stores around me want anywhere from $60-$75 and I'll be damned if I am paying some liberal fucking shitheads $150+ to mount 2 tires

why do people ride 4 strokes?
>easier maintenance
so what, 4 stroke are more complex machines, I'd rather spend more on the maintenance and know that I can fix shit by myself
>more comfortable powerband
so what, you pussy, learn to tame it
>consumes less fuel
it's a bike, you shouldn't use it for commuting unless you want to risk your life all the time
>it's quieter
see above and also who the hell wants a quiet bike
>it pollutes less
see above again, you shouldn't use it that often anyway; and dat smell is worth the cancer

on the other hands, two stroke
>is lighter
which is pretty much the most important thing (tyres aside) about a bike
>sounds better
>inb4 chainsaw noise
if you associate it with chainsaws it's because you're a millennial and have never watched GP500 bikes
>you can work on it
it has way less moving parts and a far simpler design
>one power stroke per revolution
who wouldn't want that
>tuning
it's far easier to tune and cops won't suspect it because it's supposed to be loud and powerful in the first place
>manly powerplant
>dat smell

just accept that if you ride a 4 stroke, you're doing it wrong

>>16676508
The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.

I remember hyosung owners forever claiming that the [current year] models have all the bugs worked out finally. They've introduced injection because it's a legal requirement like turn signals, brakes, and wheels. If it's your first bike you might not notice the quality issues but they are there. If you have a dealer nearby, go and check one out in person. How are the:
>frame welds
>quality of alloy
>any rust on bolt heads, spokes, chrome?
>visible tank seams?
>depth of paint finish?
>wiring connectors
etc

They're fucking shit and that's before you even go to ride them. Although here's a video of someone trying to be nice because it's probaby a paid appearance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQiKP3gW_d8
>>
>>16676516
>best beginner bike
First of all who gives a shit about beginners and second if you aren't an idiot, you would be better off learning on a bike that you will enjoy instead of learning to use that piece of shit and then having to buy something better to re-learn all over again
>supersport handling spoils you
Ok, this is getting ridiculous, bad bait my friend
>shit brakes are good
It just gets better, uh?
>power limit for A2
>not getting a """detuned""" bike
>carbs
Ehh, good because theyre cheap and they do their job, fuel injection has its advantages, but this is a matter of preference
>neutral riding position
Why cant you just accept the fact that it's better to learn with what you want to stick with? Also not many have the pockets to just buy more bikes.
>price
Only good thing
>shit suspensions are good
Bad bait
And none of this was 4 stroke vs 2 stroke

Question for Americans:

>live in apartment complex
>all parking is on private property
>parking spaces are very long and wide
>I own a Yamaha FZ-09 and a rather small car
>I'm allotted only 1 parking space as a renter without paying extra to park in an off-site parking garage
>asked management if I can park my car and bike in the same space (bike can easily fit in front or behind my small car without jutting out into traffic)
>Apartment manager is cool and said he's fine with it but thinks it is illegal

So, my question is, do you think it is illegal for my bike and my car to share the same space on a private parking lot? I live in Florida and I always thought it was legal as long as the parking area isn't metered.
>>
>>16676911
It's not illegal, but most properties want to charge you for two spots because two vehicles.

I do that with my bike and my Acura
>>
>>16676919
Thanks, man. Yeah management doesn't care because the off-site parking isn't run by them but by some other group who has contracts with the three apartments that surround them. So my apartment complex doesn't make money for the 2nd spot since I'd be paying in to the parking garage management.

COming from having no front breaks for most my klx 300s life. Its way better to have good breaks so when you go to something with decent disc breaks you dont endo into a car.
>>
So there have been a few bike thefts around here lately of mostly older bikes and dirt bikes that have just had their ignition barrel punched out and started with a screwdriver.

I've already picked up 2 disc locks and I've ordered a GPS kit but I'm also thinking of installing a kill switch somewhere. I suppose I'll make it cut both the fuel pump and the ignition but what would be the best way of going about this? Anyone done it before? I'm going to look up some examples online tomorrow but I'm just a bit hesitant to go cutting into my electronics.

Visit Honda forums, locate and download a factory manual (use a Haynes etc to supplement if you can't find a factory book). Change the fluids and inspect as you would any other vehicle, common sense applies.

Do visit vintage Honda forums. This is not one.

I'd think more like 800 bucks for what I see in pic.
>>
>>16677716
Talk him down, my cm400 pictured in the post below yours cost me 700 and will do 98mph with its shitty carb
Just prepare to have to replace:
-Tires
-chain/sprockets
-carb rebuild
-cables
-electronics
These 70s-80s Honda's are cheap but you're always opening pandoras box with em
>>16677730
Yep, '81
>>
>>16677734
Looks like its going to brake down if few months
>>
>>16677725
>>16677734
Really? Cool, I figured a small bike/big guy combo would mean slow going.

Can I assume it's just like buying a used car? If I need to rebuild the carb and engine, same principles apply? Sprockets and chains are new to me but I could probably figure it out
>>
>>16677737
I had the cb450t it could do 110mph but i did feel kinda bumpy
>>
>>16677747
All that stuff is much easier on a bike, especially a UJM considering everything is out in the open.
Sprockets and chain shouldn't be an issue, they're all easily accessible
>>
>>16677747
If you can rebuild and engine a chain and sprocket will be a joke.
>>
>>16677755
Nice, same engine but honda just sleeved it out a bit after 83 I believe

They replicate the vintage British motorcycle experience. Avoid. The W800 poster is right. Many collectors of older Britbikes also own W800s for that BSA style without the grenade BSA drivetrain.

Vintage British motorcycle engineering is so bad is makes vintage Harley engineering look fucking wonderful by comparison.

Enfields ARE easy to work on, which is key to their third world success. If you aren't afraid to spin a wrench you can find plenty of info online to keep yours running.

Just remember classic Britbikes were designed for mechanically inclined owners who spent long dreary Bongistan winters doing periodic maintenance.

If I had to choose between an Enfield and Hyosung, I'd hold my nose and get the Enfield.

RAM make very nice vehicle mounts for notebooks, phones, tablets and radios. Best prices are usually on Ebay and you can swap out mounts and balls and more to your hearts content.

You perhaps, but what one man can do, another can do. Take babby steps, assume nothing, get a factory service manual and study brand-specific forums. I could teach a potato to fix jet fighters if the potato had initiative. You have the internet, forums, and a better learning environment for bike wrenching than ever in history.
