Surprising performance from an unassuming vehicle.

I don't know enough about Altimas to say either way. Cursory googling says that the V6 version has 270 hp.

I'll do like I'd do any other part of a vehicle that messes up. Fix it unless the repairs are more than the car is worth. With proper use and maintenance I'm hoping it won't be an issue for a while. I am aware of them being somewhat unreliable transmissions though.

The 400 especially because you can get them for under $3000. People will put another $3,000 into them, and they'll have a manual swap, exhaust, intake, suspension, brakes upgrades, and an LSD. You see a lot of them at amateur drift events.

The Altima, unlike the Laguna though, has a sportier sister car that Europe doesn't get a version of, and is just as much a sleeper.
The Nissan Maxima. Since 2004 the Altima and Maxima have shared the same platform, and V6 engines, but the Maxima is bigger... and sportier.
Nissan has repeatedly advertised it as a 4 door sports car. Renault doesn't have anything like that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBlfu1atn10

The only real downside to the Maxima is that since 2007, they've been CVT only. The last year for the 6 speed manual was 2006, though you could still get the Altima V6 with a 6 speed stick until I think 2014.

Why do the impala SS and grand prix gxp have to have such a garbo transmission lads?
>>
>>16664751
because GM learned early on in the W-body program that manual transmissions in cars of that size do not sell. From 1988 to 1993, a Getrag 282 5 speed was available (with an improved Getrag 284 specific to the 3.4L DOHC engine cars). It was discontinued for the 1994 model year because the manuals sold like shit and all their studies showed the market for a manual transmission FWD mid-size or full-size sedan was so niche, it was almost nonexistent.
For example, 1991-1993 Lumina Z34's. They sold between 30k and 40k Z34s per year, which is decent for a performance model of a sedate car. Only 3k each year of that 30-40k of Z34's were 5 speed manuals. The rest were 4 speed automatics. Manual sales were even lower on the normal models. So they discontinued them.

Had they wanted to, they could have offered a 6 speed manual on the LS4 cars. The LS4 V8 has the same transmission bolt pattern as the F40 6 speed used in the Pontiac G6 GTP. The transmission (with a different bolt pattern) is able to stand up reliably to punishment from an AWD 320+HP 2.8L Turbo V6 (Opel Vectra OPC and Saab 9-3 Aero XWD). If it can stand up to that, it could easily handle the LS4's 300 HP.

A sleeper isn't a sleeper because it can beat the slow 80%. A sleeper is a sleeper because it surprises people that think they are fast. Like a beat up volvo that destroys a v8 mustang. That's a fucking sleeper. Just because you can beat cars that everyone else can beat as well doesn't mean shit.
>>
>>16668986
Yes but my point is that you're comparing a factory forced induction motor to a factory naturally aspirated motor, which in my book voids the comparison.
>>
>>16669737
>which in my book voids the comparison.
No it does not.
Example. In 2004 and 2005, GM released 2 serious contenders meant to tackle the Honda Civic Si, the Saturn Ion Redline, and the Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged.
Both Saturn and Chevy used the same engine, a supercharged and intercooled (water to air via intake manifold) 2.0L DOHC 16 valve Ecotec I4.
In 2006, Honda released a new Civic, including a new Si. The Si came with a high revving, naturally aspirated, 2.0L DOHC 16 valve i-VTEC K-series I4.
The supercharged GM engine were officially 205 HP and 200 ft-lbs of torque.
The K20 in the Civic was rated at 197 HP and 139 ft-lbs of torque.
All 3 cars weighed about the same. Which do you think were faster? The GM LSJ cars of course, but it was still a valid comparison.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g-tSXfatzQ
This is before counting the fact that magazines decided the LSJ cars were underrated after throwing a stock Ion Redline on the dyno and getting around 195 FWHP, which would put proper output of the LSJ engine around 220 HP.
But it's still a valid comparison. The cars were designed to compete with each other, regardless of the methods of getting air into the cylinders. That makes it a legitimate comparison.
In 2008, the N/A Civic Si was compared against the turbocharged Mini, GTI, Cobalt SS, WRX, Lancer Ralliart and Mazdaspeed3.
Still a valid comparison.

the SHO engines are extremely reliable. Because Ford didn't built them. The engines were built in Japan by Yamaha

Yes, these cars are reasonably quick, but I wouldn't go as far as calling them sleepers. The problem is that most people see them and go "Yeah, that's quicker than my Yaris/Dualis/320d/etc..." due to the fact that they know they are "sports" (or sportier) models

A Commodore Evoke or Falcon XT with a Clubsport/Maloo or XR6T/XR8/F6/GT-P running gear, yeah I'd call that a sleeper (Bonus points for ex taxi).

Doesn't compute.
A bigger heavier car, with the same engine and platform, even with improved suspension cannot be called sportier.
Sportyness heavily relies on smallness.

Hahahahahaha what?! You think all the mods you listed will cost only $3,000? You are literally a nocar loser or a Honda owner, probably one that watches drift events on his computer and then goes for a drive in his fwd point-A-to-B 1.8l econobox. A manual swap alone is about 3k even if you're doing it yourself, which you probably can't since it requires custom fab. Seriously just stop pretending to know anything.

I'd say it counts just because of how batshit fast it is. You'd expect something like that to be somewhat quick compared to the average yuropoor poverty box, but fast enough to dust many modern performance cars? The average joe isn't going to see that coming.

Also, the Altima has a 12.18lb per hp ratio, while the G37 has a 10.99lb to 12.57lb per hp ratio. That's either only 1lb better than the Altima, so more or less the same, or even a little worse.

The Altima is advertised as a family sedan.
The Maxima is literally advertised as a 4 door sports car.
It's not exactly the same engine, the tuning is different. The Maxima has always had more power. From 2002-2007 The Altima V6 had 240 HP, 260 HP on the rare SE-R model. Weight was just under 3,400 lbs.
https://www.edmunds.com/nissan/altima/2006/sedan/st-100624664/features-specs/
From 2004-2008, the Maxima had 265 HP. Weight was around 3500 lbs
https://www.edmunds.com/nissan/maxima/2006/st-100624746/features-specs/
In 2008, the Altima got redesigned, and the V6 was bumped to 270 HP. Weight was around 3500 lbs, almost on the nose. Weight was just over 3,400 lbs
https://www.edmunds.com/nissan/altima/2009/st-101047090/features-specs/
In 2009, the Maxima was redesigned, and bumped up to 290 HP. Weight was around 3,565 lbs.
https://www.edmunds.com/nissan/maxima/2010/st-101197626/features-specs/
The Altima was redesigned again in 2012, but power output stayed the same. Weight is around 3,320 lbs
https://www.edmunds.com/nissan/altima/2013/st-200418419/features-specs/
The Maxima was then redesigned in 2015. Power was bumped to 300 HP even. Weight is just under 3,500 lbs
https://www.edmunds.com/nissan/maxima/2016/st-200732058/features-specs/

All with the same engine and chassis. The Maxima has always had more power, more room, and better dynamics all while, essentially, weighing the same or similar.
