Big old American luxobarge. One of the ones with the huge bumpers and tall fins and chrome all over the place.
I'd restore the bodywork to it's original shiny and chrome glory, then add a proper roll cage and front bucket seats for safety.
Then I'd set to work on the chassis and drivetrain.
Modern efficient V8 in it for more power for the bulk, AWD, 4-wheel steering, upgrade brakes and suspension to modern standards. Maybe make it a hybrid for more torque to get all that weight off the line faster.
Interior-wise, I'd have a modern stereo and speakers fitted. Proper surround sound, but still leave the original stereo and speakers in for that 1960s 8-track tinny quality.
At the end, it'd handle like a modern european car, and move like one too. It'd make turns on british roads, and would be able to make it into spaces big enough for it.

Then I'd turn a semi trailer into a rolling toybox and house, and maybe add an accordion connector into the truck's cab like they have between train carriages.

It's fire control system (BE) or stabilizer (AE).
Also add autoloader because the 128mm didn't come as one shell but split because it was so heavy as one piece.

>1961/'62 Pontiac Tempest Safari

>rip the stock 195 out and put it on a stand for display because it's a record setter in its own right (largest post-war petrol I4 in a passenger car)
>prepare the engine bay so that multiple engines can be swapped in a day
>build a Rover V8 3.5L with a turbo (~350hp) as a nod to the aluminium Buick 215 optional in the Tempest itself and standard in the Oldsmobile F-85 sibling of the Tempest whose Jetfire option was the world's first turbocharged production car
>build a Buick 231 with a huge turbo (~650hp) as a nod to both the Buick Grand National as well as the Buick Special sibling of the Tempest which was America's first V6 passenger car
>build a Pontiac 400 (~400hp) with nitrous (~600hp) as a nod to the original 195 which was half a 389 and to the optional 326 in 1963

>rip the stock driveshaft, transaxle and IRS out and install the entire setup from a Corvette C6 with a stretched driveshaft, keep both manual and automatic transaxles around, reinforced if needed, and install adjustable suspension components that allow tuning for both cornering (when running the Rover or Pontiac with manual) and drag racing (when running the Pontiac with nitrous or the Buick with automatic), as a nod to the Tempest beating the Corvette to the aluminium V8, IRS as well as the transaxle

>keep it in full patina at first
>then run it for a while with the roof stripped down to the metal
>then run it for a while with an aloha pattern in tasteful colors on the roof (white and off-white with some mint green or light blue maybe)

Also the Buick body panels swap straight to the Tempest so I'd do that because they look cooler, and the round tail lights allow me to install Cadillac rockets. Also I'd incorporate visual cues to other performance models of these model lines, like a shaker hood as a not to the Firebird and a hood mounted tach as a nod to the GTO Judge and Buick GSX. I want this car to be a beautifully insane cross section of Pontiac and Buick performance history, with some hot rodding thrown in and multiple engines and transmissions in the garage to mix and match

Hell, you could even tune the 195 if you wanted to. Mickey Thompson did. Don't know how much power it made though, was probably put into a very light dragster.
>>
>>16652337
personally, I'd also work on a 4.8L LS turbo V8, as a nod to the late 70's/early 80's Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Turbo. You know, the one with that terribad 301 Pontiac turbo V8
>>
>>16652387
But what does the LS have to do with the 301? Not only do I miss a connection, but it would probably also be a disproportional effort to prep the car for yet another engine. The other engines are literally just evolutions of the ones originally available in the Tempest and its siblings which I imagine makes fitting them much easier. The Buick 215 V8 became the Rover V8. The Buick Fireball V6 became the 231 became the 3800.
The 195 was half a 389 and the 326 and 400 were 389s with different bore. Also I already have two turbo engines, I don't need a third one. In fact I'd rather have a supercharged engine, but I can't recall any factory supercharged Buicks or Pontiacs.

Tempest guy here again, I'd also like to build a daily driver with an electric conversion with four hub motors, regenerative braking and an computer management unit capable of torque vectoring some day. With a range extending petrol generator trailer. V70 looks like a nice option in terms of interior space and comfort, but it doesn't really matter when you remove the entire drivetrain anyway.
>>
>>16652405
>But what does the LS have to do with the 301?
design-wise, nothing. I suggested it would be the closest thing to a 301 turbo that actually makes power, though granted the LS 4.8 is actually a 293
>>
>>16652434
I can make power with a Pontiac 400, I can make power with a Buick V6. The goal isn't to make the most power possible, the goal is to modernize the car for performance while keeping an appreciative reference to the original engineering in the hardware.
>>
>>16652274
Well now, with all these modifications, we need to resize the entire tank chassi and turret, to create room for the autoloader, BE and ammo. We could remove the mounted MG on the chassis, and lower the number of crew for 3, Driver, Commander and a gunner, using the space gained on removeing the rear MG and Mg gunner to store more ammo and fuel, it would make the tank bigger and heavier, it would need a way better engine, +1000hp maybe and better suspension, this tank would be beautiful, would be a Super heavy tiger I.

>Cannon - 12.8 cm pak 44 with autoloader and muzzle brake for the cannon
>Ammo - +200mm maybe
>Weight - +70tons maybe
>Crew - 3
>Velocity - ?
>Leopard 2 engine (?)
>Fire control system

Boy that is a hella of tank
>>
>>16652455
Loader and MG Gunner are gone.
Driver on the left Commander and Gunner on the right.
Lengthened Turret to accommodate 12,8cm autoloader.
Leopard 2 Engine is to heavy but comes with modular design that's cool maybe Leopard 1 engine + auxiliary engine for AC turret ring etc.
Thus transmition moves to the back.
Old suspension design with new strong torsion bars and extra durable wheels.

Ok, now we have to talk about the armour, since we are creating the huge metal beast we have to think about it protection capabilities. We can use a combination of both standard steel armour, explosive reactive armour (those little "bricks") and tehArena the active reactive armour use by the russians.
For the steel armour we could use the same type used by the M1A2s and Challengers 2, the Chobham armour with depleted uranium and layers of kevlar, with the minimu thickness of 200mm. Mixing that with the reactive armour on the front armour and sides and also with the Arena, i think this tank could be very strong, of course we could change the chassis and use the Tiger II chassi adapted for the previous modifications.

See if would work.

Spaced armour seems a good option to protect the Arena system and the reactive armour, i think that we could add the space armour on the turret, with a small space between the original armour and the steel plane, covering the Arena system and the explosive bricks, the metal plate would not be necessary thick as the main armour, just enought to cover everything,to not expose the bricks and the Arena.

>in the market for a daily beater

>that week see a 68 with <40k original miles go up for $6k
>just so happened to be what I had saved, bought it and drove it ~200 miles back home

Lots of stuff wrong with it but I more or less want to get everything original working on it. A few features it came with:
Automatic climat control
Power windows
5 speaker audio system
Cruise control (I'm not kidding, it's some crazy vacuum and relay operated system
Self defeating parking brake
7-way adjustable power seats
Also want to do the obvious and replace all wiring. I bought some solid-state replacements for the turn signal sequencer, but I'd like for the whole system to have modern replacements.

Beyond that I need to rebuild the 429 as it's burning oil like crazy. I'd be happy with a cam, holley, and intake manifold but what I really want to do is bore/stroke to 500+, aluminium heads, weber stacks, and swap in a 9" pumpkin with a posi. The 9.25in in this car is a 32-spline and supposedly can accept a 9" with some careful shimming. I've also seen some heads on the market that essentially copy the boss semi-hemi heads but will bolt directly to my block. Apparently more show than go, but still crazy cool. Also want to find an original radio and modify it to accept aux/Bluetooth and use a remote amplifier.

Would also like to adapt an airbag system from a 90's towncar/continental. I did some research a year or more ago and it seems like a damn near direct swap.

Lolnope. Rollcages are mostly for rolling over, not crash protection with two vehicles involved. Bucket seats and race harnesses can actually be more dangerous if you don't have a HANS-device.
>AWD
Why? More grip? A 5000lbs land yacht will have plenty of that with the right suspension, you really don't want to add any more weight on top of that, it'll make you handling goals even more hard to achieve.
>Hybrid for more torque
European detected. You don't need more torque than a properly build big block can produce, and you certainly don't want to add several hundred pounds to an already overweight vehicle if you actually want to make it handle.

I think you underestimate the physical size of a proper landyacht. It'll never be able to comfortably fit on a British B-road, nevermind being easy to park.

>>

Why RB26 when the VR38 exists, and would clearly be lighter (iron block vs. aluminium, V6 VS. pigfat I6), have a better center of gravity, and would probably be a better fit since the engine bay was designed for a V6? 600hp is easymode anyways.

Too many dream builds to single out just one, so here's my dream build for my current DD.

2008 Mustang GT
>Full road race suspension setup from Griggs Racing
>Replace Panhard bar with a Watts Link
>Shoehorn in a fully built Ford 6.2 liter SOHC Boss (Raptor) engine from Livernois, bullet proof internals.
>Stroked to 427ci
>all the cooling essentials
>twin plate hydraulic clutch
>Ditch TR-3650 for a (T56) Magnum XL
>One piece carbon fibre driveshaft
>FR500 or Boss 302R differential
>3.73 axle ratio
>chunky output shafts
>Chassis reinforcement
>Fuel cell
>dual GT500 fuel pumps
>Long tube cat-less headers with an x-pipe and Roush muffler delete cat-back
>partial roll-cage
>305s up front, 315s in the rear
>Carbon ceramic brakes

End result, a road race ready early S197 Mustang powered by a naturally aspirated modern take on the 427 SOHC, that will redline at 8500 rpm, crank out 800 horsepower and sounds like the god of thunder. Plus, because the 6.2 livernois race-spec block weighs exactly as much as the aluminum 4.6 block currently in the car, the weight distribution stays in the 50-55% forward bias range.

An old dream of mine: Take an eight or ninth generation Mitsu Lancer Evolution, because I find them aesthetically beautiful, then swap in a Skidline GTR R32/33 drivetrain, but with all the air-cooled glory of a Porsche 993's turbo engine powering it. Keep the look stock-ish, just improve the brakes and suspension a bit, without lowering it because muh rally heritage

As the final touch, buy and arrange the letters in the trunk to spell "Shitsubishi Cancer Eeveelution" in a fashion as similar to factory as possible

Also, I'd like to take one of dem 80s Mercedes brickwagons, in beige color, and upgrade the everliving shit out of it while keeping the look as boring as possible, install a quiet and powerful turbo inline 6 with a sequential gearbox behind it.

Now, the centerpiece would be the relatively small turbofan (which would ideally be afterburn-capable for dat flamin' backside) mounted in the rear space that the wagon provides. Now that would be a sight to behold: an 80s Mercedes wagon, in an ugly beige color, with dents and scratches showing the car's age, going nearly a third of the speed of sound...ah, a man can dream

Rolling over as large cars are prone to when hitting smaller cars. Smaller cars such as ANYTHING ELSE ON THE FUCKING ROAD.
AWD for more grip and wet-weather performance. Gotta corner like a european car if you're in europe.
Hybrid means INSTANT torque. And besides, a few hundred pounds is just going to take up the difference between me and the intended original driver, because I'm not a landwhale.

Otherwise, if you can get a goddamn tractor around B-roads, a caddy will be fine. They make it to the local shows in one piece down B-roads and worse, without issue.

>>16665834
>Will a 1000cc engine fit where a 1600cc engine used to fit
Probably yes
>>
>>16665934
Actually, it's the other way around. A light object is more likely to deflect when encountering a heavier object.

AWD for grip is retarded on proper tires, with 5000lbs on weight creating a normal force. Wet-weather performance isn't limited by acceleration grip, but by braking grip. Cornering ''like a european car'' is physically impossible at that weight point, unless you count a Rolls-Royce as the pinnacle of European sportiness. Also, AWD won't create more cornering grip.

Hybrids create instant torque, but they're practically impossible to make out of a classic landyacht. Besides, a proper big block will make plenty of torque, and it will get you off the line fast enough. Power adders exist for a reason here.

Sure, you'll get it around B-roads - but it'll never, ever be as fun around a B-road as, say, an MX-5 or an MGB. They're too wide, which means every single time there's someone in the opposite lane, you're going to be managing that width. Sure, they make it down to the shows in one piece, but they don't do that at breakneck speeds simply because it doesn't fit. Parking will be a bitch.

I drive a fullsized MURRICA truck here in mainland Europe about every week. You're constantly managing the size and your road position. It's possible to go on Euro roads with a landyacht, it's not fun per se and you definitely won't ever end up with a canyon carver that devours B-roads.

>>
>>16666192
All of those at once would be nigh on impossible. I've seen V8 RWD conversion for the Focus online, a V10 would probably fit, even with the stock seats, although probably a relocated firewall.

Transverse AWD and turbo would be possible, it's just that a longitudinal AWD drivetrain in a transverse platform, with turbo's slapped on would be extremely hard.

It's not for the fun of driving it around twisties. Most of the mods are just to ensure it gets the fuck around corners without crawling around at 10MPH and taking three-point turns to get around tighter ones.

The point of it is to have a properly modernised, safe landbarge that's all shiny and chrome, but can also be DDed in britain.
Not that I'd actually drive it that often. But, y'know, it COULD be. And the thrill of driving an old caddy wouldn't be ruined by the harsh reality of it not going around corners.

If I wanted something to twat around twisties in for fun, I'd just mod a focus for AWD and more power and... Oh, wait. That's the RS, so I'd just buy one of those. And use all that power and grip to smash the groceries around in the boot.

>>16666115
Old cars are terrible cars, but look nice.
New cars look generic, but are great technologically.
Modern tech + old car = ideal.

Although I sort of want to track down my first car and restore it to the ideal of the people that modified it before I got hold of it. Low suspension, plenty of power, big stereo. Just sharpen up the handling a bit for my tastes.
Come to think of it, the only 'mods' I did to it was wholesale replacement of the brake system when it rotted off.
TFW I'll never drive a boyracer car because I have more sense.
And that there's probably not another late 90s hot hatch still running that's been modded in that kind of way.
At least I sold it to someone who enjoyed driving.

turboprop mated to a perfected CVT, variable bevelgear differential for torque vectoring, all behind the driver, one piece carbon shell, with a single hatch for entry, drive while laying on your stomach, no windows, cameras and a display on the floor, body tapers both laterally and vertically, internal (pushrod) suspension with electronically variable camber and toe magnetic shocks acting also as springs, four wheel steering, external wheels extending away from the body, so that all parts of the body are inside of the wheels' perimeter, surrounded, but vented over the top, wheel covers rotate with wheels to aerodynamically aid application of turning force, front suspension and rear suspension and axle shafts wrapped in bodywork shaped to function as an aerofoil to create downforce, rear brakes inboard, tail of the vehicle rotates vertically to alter downforce and drag, as do the suspension covers, rest of the body shaped for the tail can most efficiently create downforce with minimal drag.
900HP, always at peak power, torque vectoring, 4ws, active aero providing a Cd ranginf from .24 to .36 and frontal area not much larger than an F1 car, while having significantly less wheel drag, downforce from the wing shaped body and suspension rod covers ranging from between 600lbs and 1200lbs (even though the body panels create downforce, it would be impossible to match the downforce of an F1 car without protruding wings) car weight of about 1850lbs (turboprops are very light, CVT's could theoretically be the lightest type of trans, bare interior, no glass, tiny body shell, magnesium aluminum titanium beryllium and carbon are the only materials used) maybe 3-3.5g's and a top speed of 280? 0-60 would be a less than record setting 2.7ish seconds.
please add input on what's wrong or could be improved

shame it will never happen, these things are a bitch to find, and cost way too much money when they are for sale. plus finding a gearbox that the engine will work with/getting it to fit the car would probably never happen without spending a load of money

I always wanted to do this too... Well, kind of. My target vehicle was always a Probe. I ended up doing numerous KLZE swaps into my various Probes and one MX6... Good memories...

Started out by considering a RWD conversion and 13B swap. Figured out I didn't have the skillset for that amount of fab.

Started considering transverse mounting a 13B. Even checked into bell housing adapters for various transaxles.

In the end, the dream remains a dream. Would still love to take one of my remaining Probes and RWD it with a rotary powered heart.

Interesting to see I wasn't the only rotard thinking such thoughts. Here all this time I thought I was all alone.
