Would trucking in the oil fields be a good idea now that the pipelines got the go ahead? I'm making $20/hr, 40 hours no overtime comfy local delivery job at the moment. But thinking when I turn 25 next year I should maybe try some real trucking and have a sense of adventure.

I'm in the same position as you. I bet my job is comfier tho. I finish my deliveries early and I get like half the day to my self while still getting paid. Some days I'll just go home early getting paid for the full day of course.
I get to see tons of awesome places in the great state of California. I don't earn much considering the high cost of living but since I live with my parents I keep most of my check. I'd say don't do it. It's better to be happy at your job compared to earning more but being unhappy. Pic related. Dwarven village I went to this week.

>the training program I am taking is 4 months long with 260 hours
Jesus Christ, what a gigantic waste. I got my license with a 2 week course and was a qualified driver after 6 weeks (1 orientation, 5 training).
I hope you're getting paid by a company or something to take this training program.
>>
>>16646816
>What kind of schooling do you guys get before heading out on the road?

None. That is """"""""school.""""""""

>Not trying to be a dick. I get that it's always going to be different once you actually start working, but the training program I am taking is 4 months long with 260 hours spent behind the wheel (most of which is on actual roads), so I'm hoping to know a fair bit by the time I get a job.

It just depends how smart your trainers are. My trainers will tell me I can make a turn, then literally we can't make it.

Or I'll ask them a question, and they'll just look at me with their mouth open with this vacant, soulless gaze. Its like dude what are you even doing. How are you human? How are you real?

Basically Prime trainers are just high school drop outs who need to slave you out so they can afford their lease payment. So they can continue to LARP as small business owners.

It sounds like you have actual educators with an aptitude for teaching. So you're not really living my hell I wouldn't worry.

You must be training for Prime. There's a lot of that out there, they only have to pay you 700 + your bens and taxes while they rake in monstrous amounts of cash on team loads that pay well.

Not all of their trainers are like that but when I was in training I had a few I interviewed who were trying to hustle me. I lucked out 3, count em, 3 times. First went intermodal so I had to get off. Second I stayed on past my miles for winter training and got injured. 3rd was a refresher and we got along great and he really sharpened my backing skills big time. Dude was an ace and let me bring both of my road bikes on his truck whenever we had down time we would ride to restaurants or other shit, we got stuck in Canada for two days and rode around Toronto for a while doing the tourist thing.
>>
>>16648166
This is actually triggered I just didn't get my trip up.

My second trainer was actually awesome. But I was only with him four days. My other 3 trainers have been aids everyday.

Only 2,100 miles left until I upgrade.

Oilfield trucking didn't fully stop when the recession hit two years ago, and will continue whether those big pipelines go through or not.

It pays really well in exchange for working long hours in often hard conditions, especially in the border states or Canada where winter can be breddy fierce.

There are lots of different aspects of trucking when it comes to oil and gas work, so there are a lot of options, depending on what you want to do.

There's tanker work hauling all kind of fluids like crude oil or fresh water, pneumatics for hauling bulk oilfield cement, chemicals like calcium or flyash, or frac sand, flatbedding mobile equipment like bulldozers, or pallets of drilling mud chemicals, winch trucks for loading various types skids, cryogenic trailers hauling liquid nitrogen or co2, and then there are tonnes of different types of vocational driving jobs that entail driving and operating mounted equipment like high pressure pumps, vacuum trucks or cranes.
>>
>>16649200
You are much better off getting the higher license. Like I mentioned a million times before- opens up more options for you and some jobs where you will be driving straight trucks still want the Class A anyway, especially if they have other equipment that you may possibly drive in the future and requires it.
>>
>>16649061
M-mom...?

>>16649200
If you can drive a collection truck, or a transfer rig, you'll be much more appealing to the larger companies that run both. Transfer is a pretty cozy gig in most places. Drive 1-4 laps and end where you started the same day.

Oh snap u guys. I offtracked and hit a cement highway median lol. Construction detour required me to do a really tight u turn. I didn't quite go wide enough.

Amazingly on the trailer there isn't even a scratch at the very back of my trailer where I started to hit up against it. Not even a cut or abrasion on the tire.

No harm no foul?

Does it feel like it's harder to back between lines than it is to back between trailers? Sometimes it takes me like three or four pullups and I feel retarded because I one-shot earlier that day between other trailers.

Got a little dilemma. Should I stay with Piss And Moan for my full contact year, making shit wages, or should I look into moving on to a different company? On one hand, I don't want to give them the satisfaction of taking $6000 of my dollarydoos, yet I would like to make more.

Your first year anywhere isn't going to be good. Everything you dislike now, you will likely dislike the exact same things at every major carrier, and nowhere worth working will hire you with less than a year of safe driving.
Just suck it up and don't hit anything, then you get almost any dedicated or daycabber job you want.

I take product in there (read: pig parts in 20 2000lb bins) at least a couple of times a month and yeah the place is in an absolutely retarded location for an industrial park since it's on the opposite side of a residential area from the only truck highway to the town, US25E. And with a low bridge on the one road that would make sense to get to the place so you can't use that. Even better, the only truck route in to the place (KY 2079) has a 22 ton restricted bridge on it.

Since Prime drops and hooks there it's not so bad for y'all but we hate them since we have to do live unload and you just as well figure on getting at least an 8 in.

Just because I drive a vocational straight truck now doesn't mean I wasn't a trucker before.

Bepis isn't technically a trucker anymore either gonsidering he now does local deliveries, yet he doesn't catch any flack about it.

I'm too autistic to go inside and ask but what is general policy in truck stops on using the microwave for shit you didn't necessarily buy there.
Will they yell at me if I just walk in and nuke some soup?
>>
>>16655644
No. They're used to shitstains doing it all the time. The polite thing to do is to buy a hot or cold drink while it's in the microwave as thanks for the convenience.

Alternatively, get a HotLogic Mini for $25. They run on 200w inverters. Just throw your gruel for dinner in when you wake up and it's ready in 4-8 hours, and will hold it at a safe temperature until your cuckbox tells you that you're allowed to eat.
>>
>>16655589
I can't understand why an enlightened gentleman such as yourself would actively seek out a place where high school dropout cuckboxers get together to talk about cuckboxing, and then you don't like them talking about being cuckboxers.
It's a trucker thread for truckers to talk about trucking. Driving a straight truck does not make one a trucker.

Another option is one of those 12v hard plastic, black lunchbox style RoadPro heaters.

I had one while I was sleeper living, and theyre pretty convienent for heating up canned soups/stews or making hot sandwiches. Wal-Mart and lots of dollar stores sell disposable baking tins that fit in them pretty well to use as a liner for easy cleanup.

>"on top of that the load will be ready at midnight and he will have to drive all night tired to make the load on time"
>Prime sales "Sounds great!!! We'll dispatch a truck immediately!!"

Generally I turn them down mostly because of those reasons, plus I'm vegan. Smithfield loads are a lot better they pay better and don't send you to literally where to pick up. And most have overnight parking and actual facilities, I went to a Smithfield once that had free showers, for OTR drivers. The one I'm at now has full facilities except for that.

Cargill isn't much better but most of them have facilities and they're usually drop and hook and almost always honor the DDT.

If someone does that, you should get out and execute them right there at the scene. That level of ignorance of your surroundings should be punishable by death.

>>
>>16665534
Are you fucking high? Did you actually watch the video?

The truck was in the single, solid lined dedicated turn lane proceeding into the turn. The 4wheeler was in a straight through lane and made an illegal maneuver. Neither started from a stop during the video like you claim.
>>
>>16665637
I know the car made an illegal turn but at the end of the day, the truck is the one that had an accident. As professional drivers, we have a responsibility to be safe drivers. If he paid attention to his surroundings, he had more than enough time to see the car and brake.
You can get all pissy about who was at fault and yada yada but ultimately you're the one responsible. He wasn't at fault, but now he still has to spend who knows how long sitting on the side of the road dealing with cops and insurance, and he still has a mark on his record.
>>
>>16665755
The car driver broke the law and hit the truck. At fault all the way.
>>
>>16665955
And yet the trucker still has to deal with the consequences.
Wouldn't it have just been easier to prevent the accident?

>>
>>16665755
>the truck is the one that had an accident

Nope. Regardless of what that video looks like, you can't tell where the truck drivers attention was. Most probably watching the road he was turning in to. Or keeping an eye out for pedestrians/cyclists that try to cut across his path.

I wouldn't be watching my right side while making a turn. And there's not much the truck could have done about it once that SUV started his turn.

Stop making excuses for clueless or asshole car drivers. Just take their licenses away and give them a lifetime invitation to ride the bus.
>>
>>16666275
>I wouldn't be watching my right side while making a turn.
Because you're not a safe driver, and will likely be involved in several similar accidents.
>And there's not much the truck could have done about it once that SUV started his turn.
They make these things called brake pedals. You can use them to rapidly deccelerate your vehicle.
>>
>>16666303
>use the brakes!
>in the 0.3 seconds between the retard starting to turn and the impact
The brakes would barely respond to the pedal in that time.
>SUV was at fault, but truck is still responsible
You're as much a retard as the SUV driver. Were you the SUV driver?
>>
>>16666333
He had more than 0.3 seconds to respond,, but he wasn't paying attention to his surroundings. Had he been more attentive, he could have easily prevented it.
>>
>>16666346
>moving the goalposts
From the time the SUV started the turn until impact was less than a second. There was no time to react, and have the truck respond. If you seriously believe that the truck was in any way at fault, you are fucking retarded. I wouldn't even be surprised if that SUV was invisible from the driver's position. The camera is mounted at the top of the windshield and has a much better view.
>but- but the turn signals!
Do you even drive? Retards leave those on all the time. You can't trust them, especially when someone is in a non-turn lane and has it on.

In any case, the SUV was in a non-turning lane, attempted to make an illegal turn and turned into another vehicle. It was 100% at fault, and was the sole cause of the collision. The truck is not at all to blame here. SUVs insurance pays everything, nothing ends up on truck driver's record and after ~10 minutes to exchange insurance info he's on his way. In the end, it's a minor collision that doesn't matter in the long run.
>>
>>16666395
I've already said once or twice before that who was at fault is irrelevant. You can make up excuses till you're blue in the face but at the end of the day, it was a preventable accident that that driver could've avoided.
>nothing ends up on the driver's record
That part isn't even true. Some companies look as far back as 10 years on your driving record. If the cops get called, it goes on your record.
>>
>>16666458
>That part isn't even true
Yes, it is. Nothing goes on your record unless you're at fault. Have you ever seen what a driving record says? Last time I pulled my NSC record it said (from memory, wording not exact):
>This agency has no record of any at fault claims during the previous 5 years from the date of this search
Also said something similar for driving-related convictions, suspensions, etc. Not at fault = no record. Doesn't make sense to penalize someone for something they didn't do.

>>
>>16667706
You need a tank endorsement to haul larger containers of liquid on other trailers. I pull a flatbed and had to get it for one shipper that sends out totes of sealant.

Melton is far from the worst starter company. Open deck will keep you strong if not in shape unless you eat a fuckton. You have to think once in a while, so that's great, too.
>>
>>16667810
yeah I figured even if I'm never actually hauling 5000 gallons of milk it still wouldn't be a bad thing to have.

that was kinda what I was thinking though, regarding Melton. I used to be a milkman (yep, still a thing) and I liked the job, but I liked the driving part more than I liked running to and from 200+ houses every night. I think I'd be happy with primarily driving, and occasionally doing some physical work. I would kind of like to start out on a three pedal truck though, to get the experience with it, and it looks like Melton only has automated rigs these days.

You can usually pull a cash advance from your fuel card in the range of $100-$300/week. Don't make a habit out of it, and don't forget it comes put of your paycheck.
The idea is to give you a cash source to pay for scales, washer fluid, and cheap lumpers that are easier to pay cash and get reimbursed when you turn in the receipt.

Any company that will hire you as a w2 employee will at least get you a couple hundred a week. Don't sign any fucking leases.
>>
>>16669542
yeah the truck I'll be driving is a 2005 9400 with a 10 speed 3 pedal and a fresh ISX15. but that doesn't stop me from dreaming of driving a 379 with a 6NZ and an 18 speed.
>>
>>16669535
Call Crete and ask them if your school is one they hire from. If it is, your choices are:
Crete: dry van mostly drop/hook. Sweep out the trailer every load. Mostly decent miles but inconsistent.
Shaffer: refrigerated mostly live load. Get the trailer washed out between most loads. May waste a lot of time getting washed out. More consistent miles and longer runs but lots of time sitting on docks, and lots middle of the night deliveries.

In and around, yeah. Depends on the motor and gearing. Most truck tires are speed rated for a max of 75.

Lots of trucks are governed to 62-64 by big companies. I have personally driven units that were limited to 59 which is maddening to drive on Canadian highways that allow 68mph.

turn the audio quality down to normal and it hardly uses any data, or stop being a cuck and get Verizon's unlimited data for $110

Do you mean you got pinched on camera twice fucking around with the stereo?

If so, please explain why on earth you would put up with such an invasion of your privacy, that truck being company property or not.

Also, it's just odd that you are giving yourself advice.

You know you can set up filters to prop it to the top of the catalog, don't you?

I already get unlimited data. It's Napster being buggy.

Policy is you have to have the phone mounted and can only press one button to activate it, so I have it set up for one-touch to unlock, hold to trigger Siri.
First time I got in trouble, I picked up the phone because mom texted, hit a pothole which set off the cameras to record and phone home the video.
Second time I was fucking with Napster because it started looping again and hit a bump, which set off the camera. Now I just don't fuck with Napster, and only use voice commands.
The policy on phones is sensible, and the camera system functions in a sensible, non-invasive manner. It only records if it's triggered by G-forces or me hitting the panic button, so I don't mind either.

The takeaway is to never hit a pot hole and you can fuck around on your phone as much as you like.

Too bad you can't use voice commands for Napster.

No, but I'm feeling too lazy today to learn anyhow.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
