Gps pick 2 point mesure the distance and divide by the times
It's simple and the faster you go the better your acuracy will be
Cars mesure the rotation speed of your tires and then calcul your speed but
Any variation in your tires even very small ones modify this value so there is bigger margin of error than with gps specially at high speed
So OP's gps requirement is fine
