Because most sedans are 4500lb pigfat beasts. At that point you might as well just drive a crossover. They're a lot more useful than a sedan if you don't give a shit about driving.

Because Americans have discovered the practiciality of a hatch but they still want the prestige and comfort of an oversized sedan and also satisfy their paranoia about snowy driveways.
