Welcome to Off Road General where we do limited off roading because of cold and work. But we manage to do a lot of shitposting.
Post yourself on the map so that we can meet up and do some actual off roading:

Yes, strap a locker to the top of the roof and it'll act as a theft/vandalism deterrent
That's why jeeps have them, because the older ones usually have open roofs and detachable doors which make them more prone to theft
hard to be a mustard race when 2002-2008 Rangers were designed as cheaper fleeter vehicles compared to the F-150s and were built only for 25-50k and meant to die afterwards, though... Ranger super power by 2019?
im not him but hes right.
nerf bars and shit like brush guards are referred to as "damage multipliers" for a reason. if you hit something hard enough with it, it is going to crumple and smash into your door, fucking it up worse than if there was nothing there at all.
you seem very new to all of this but want to project an air of superiority over everyone else. its cringeworthy honestly.
fwiw ive posted my rig several times in these threads and it does have a few mods. i am confused as to why you think people are incapable of hitting the trails with stock rigs though? you are the one posting pictures that could be mostly accomplished with a fucking subaru in an attempt to justify all your "sick mawds"

The fleeters passed the rangers on and they kept going because the market still had a niche for small truccs. It's not a meme if Ford / Mazda made them for that raisin.
The end result is a bunch of uncomfortable ,cheap, small truccs that are either 2.3 or 3.0 very unpowered vehicles bought mainly for their bed.
>>16635640
x2
definitely not a meme. that was their intended build purpose. just bc people figured out how to limp along a shitheap doesnt mean they were made quality
>>16635774
That being said those old pre 2000 Rangers are pretty damn useful and reliable. Same thing with the 09-11 Rangers after they stopped being economically viable as fleeters (since the F-150 got so cheap). Tayner shares the same heart as those service and CAA / AAA service vehicles and those are bring driven up on 250000+ nowadays.
>>16635774
Granted, no fleet vehicle is ever marketed to go for hundreds of thousands of miles, it's not what the customer expects out of it. But this whole idea that Rangers were built to just fall apart after a few thousand annoys the hell out of me. They're not "limping along" at all, the post 02' 4.0 is one of Ford's best six's imo, and they're still being sold and built as good off road vehicles.
>>16635910
I didn't mean that they're built to fall apart. It's just that if we're doing a Mustard Race vehicle, it's hard to base it around the Ranger.
This is coming from a guy who owes a lovely 4.0 2010 mistress I am modifying with muh heart and soul.

Daily reminder that mall crawlers are not allowed on this general
>>16637729
What does mall crawler mean
>>16637748
A mall crawler is a vehicle that a person has that looks like they go off-road but really the only use it to run over curbs at the local shopping center
>>16637748
In short it's any off-road truck that doesn't go offroad. Generally: lifted 4x4s with gigantic all-terrain tires that will never see a patch of mud in their lives. Bonus points if it's just the front end lifted and they have a "California Bro-lean" or "Carolina Squat"
I also like to include trucks that do go off-road on occasion, but they have a shit ton of light bars and armor when all they do is drive on dirt roads

Kek. That sounds like my experience at Autozone...
Scenario 1:
>"I need a door handle for a 1997 Suburban"
>"Okay, let me just look it up in the computer... Is that a 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive suburban?"
>"It's a door handle, it doesn't matter"
"What kind of motor does it have?"
Scenario 2:
>"I need a Throwout bearing for a 1984 Mustang"
>"What's a throw up bearing?"
>"You know... It pushes up against the pressure plate when you push down the clutch..."
>*Gives me 1000 yard stare, enters "throw up bearing into computer search box
>*Nothing comes up, looks nervous.
>"Where would you find this part anon?"
This is why I love having an independent mom and pop parts store within walking distance from me... That actually hires people who know their shit. Best of luck at NAPA, and I hope the redo goes well!

Idk senpai, I have a '99 that gets flogged pretty hard on camping trips. It's supposedly the worst ranger year and it runs like a top and has only required basic maintenance thus far.
>>16638063
Yeah, I usually go to west marine because the engine is closer to a tractor or boat engine than a normal roadgoing diesel. Top RPM is 2600, the only thing that keeps me from going over it is a sticker that says "DONT GO FASTER". No rev limiter or anything.
That or Oh Really's where they know me very well now. Also, love West Marine cause hubby is a cap'n so he spends a lot of time in there and is good friends with them.

Nothing wrong with the access cab. You can take advantage of the longer bed without making your truck crazy big.

Hey guys. I'm back from the fab a few hours ago with a ripped up flywheel so Taynger's in the hospital until mid next week.
At least she'll have her much needed lift by then and the fogs wired up before the lakes start sublimating and the snow starts blowing over on the lakes. The only downside is that it's 6 degrees C on Saturday and I can't take her mudding in the half-frozen ice fields beside my work ):
>WHEN THAT WINTER SUN SET TO HER KNEES
>I LOOKED AT HER AND SHE LOOKED AT ME
>AND I TURNED ON THOSE KC LIGHTS
>DROVE ALL NIGHT B'CUS IT FELT SO RIGHT
Fuck hick hop desu. Hella fun, though.
>tfw no time to get out and play innawoods lately
>>16639529
>tfw
>i completely destroyed Taynger's old plastic valance by snow driving and slamming it into mudbanks
>see your picture
>wonder how it's still intact
How much force can those plastic Dodge things take?
My old bumper and valance has been sitting on my driveway for the past 3 months since I've been too lazy to actually. move it into my gay rage.
>>16639545
theyre pretty resilient, i dropped the nose in a trench a few years back and munged the AC coil a little and didnt even scuff the plastics
that was also pretty soft snow, i just had to 90 off a narrow road up a hill so i couldn't make progress real fast
>tfw almost made it up to the shack'n'shit cabin innawoods
>>16639563
Well that's the porpoise for the valance. So that when you drop it into a trench, it costs you $100 instead of $1000. Still, that's pretty darn surprising.
I think my issue with the valance as that I had caught it one a giant rock once and then slammed it into a fallen log. Then it would come off at the slightest mud brushing when offroading. Would recommend fixing a crack no matter how small. Still - there's a good side to having a shitbox valance:
>dribing past last bae's house
>pick her up in her PJs
>run dirt paths at the construction site / large open field / train yard beside her house
>lose valance after driving around for 30 minutes
>spend another 20 minutes looking for the valance
Good times.
Why almost to the shit'n'shack??????? Are you some kind of cuuuuuuu-
>>16639580
Actually, I'm wrong. I think the porpoise for the valance was to abide by the new SUV / Light Truck civilian laws in order to protect the stock stancefags on the road - especially during the SUV boom in the early 2000s. This lowers the vehicle front clearance to "Roadworthy" without actually placing the metal down thus cheapening costs.
What a shame. That's when all those new unibodies started producing vehicle fronts with four headlights that stay on whenever you are driving. I hate those so much.
*AHEM* R52 a shit.
>>16639580
we have a shack innawoods to go snowmobiling and riding out of or just get the fuck away from people.
the valence is just for aesthetics like most rigs anymore.
and in true modern vehicle design logic, it obstructs about 60% of the transmission coolers airflow.

What are your guys thoughts on LR Freelanders?
I need a new DD, preferably an SUV, but hate the look of new vehicles. Everything looks the same. Sante Fe looks like a CR-V which looks like a Rogue which may as well be an equinox.
I want something a little less cookie-cutter.
I've been thinking about getting a 90s-early 2000s cherokee but can't find a nice one nearby.

Why do you want a "new vehicle"? If you hate the look, you can find a much competent and cheaper offroader from 2002-2012 instead.
Especially if you're on the East coast with rust, weather, and maintenance problems.

Hi ORG!
I brought this 1999 Suburban home for $1400 because my Sonata is in need of a Catalitic converter and will take a month to ship and I needed a car to get to and from work in the meantime. It's also good to have a backup car because there are times I want to be a nice guy and drive my co-workers home and this seats nine and it was hard driving more than three people home in my sonata. I am really excited about getting this because I always wanted to go and explore the forests up north and this Suburban is four wheel drive and I will have enough room to take my bike too and everything else I need.
Here is a link to the original posting http://shorelineautogroup.com/1999-Chevrolet-Suburban/Used-STATIONWAGON/Ionia-MI/8755368/Details.aspx how did I do ORG? I forgot to say it is a 1999 with a 5.7 and 208 thousand miles

The body looks good I can't find much rust at all really. The only things wrong that I can tell with it is the tailgate won't open and the windshield wipers are stuck really high up the windshield. They don't store down out of site like on my sonata.

I only need to change both drive shafts and the differentials to the military ones since it will make the car higher and better off-road.
other than that its just some interiour work, technical service with changing bushings, packings etc..
will be a fun project.
>>16652720
You are one lucky dude.
One day I will own one of these.
How do one of these compare to a Niva?
>>16652828
Yeah im really excited to finally own one.
The Niva is good for what its built for, driving on semi bad russian roads with some snow on it.
but its really not that impressive off-road, unless you do some modefications to it.
But as for the UAZ 469B as the one i own its really good in the terrain, very light with the soft top and more fuel capacaty than the Niva.
Also more space for luggage.
I'd go for the UAZ any day, but i recomend the 469B with the ZMZ 4021.10 engine. the military engine's are known to be notorious shit and weak.
So i went for the 469B and i will just change the whole drive shaft and differentials to the military ones, they are much better and makes the car higher.
But no matter what you decide to get Uaz or Lada go for the old soviet ones. the russian made cars are pure shit and bad quality.
Mine's from 1981 with the same engine and it still runs like a clock.

neat. where'd you get it, anon?
>>16653548
Built it myself a few weeks back out of a sheet of 3/16 steel that I took from a previous job that treated me like shit haha
Turn signals are slightly ridiculous. I have to find a proper LED relay for them because they're sequencial and the timer isn't long enough for them to fully light up so they kinda seize out
>>16653494
Nice build! But why snorkel before fog lights?
I wouldn't dare dream of going 100 metres close to river crossings at dawn without my KCs installed.
There's no skidplate on earth that can save your underside from running over a beaver dam in fog.
Also:
>dat top duty winch control box
What make is it? Also, what is the cable hooked to?
How the fuck did you get that here
>>16653631
Oh the cable is just hooked to the underside of the frame so it wouldn't be in my way. I haven't even had the chance to wire the winch up properly yet as that bumper has only been on for a week or so haha.
Truck hasn't seen pavement for a month or so now. The winch is a WARN M8000 from the '80s. The thing is a beast but I've been on the lookout for a 8274 to replace it with.
I have a 30'' light bar that I want to mount on it at some point but I don't really need it and I'm pretty lazy hahaha.
Earlier in the summer I yanked out the rear 4-link setup and swapped in Chevy 63" leafs and the difference was incredible. I figure the front leaf swap is going to make a big difference too as most of my IFs was pretty dickered
>>16653749
>tackle fog
>light bar
>mfw
Otherwise looks great. But, since you're going to that much effort cutting out the front, wouldn't you be able to keep the top portion coils and some of the differential mounts and put on coils instead? Why even do leafs unless you have a full set lying around.
Send me your current Warn, M8, plox. It's missing some good snow! ):
>>16653791
Oh I was referring to auxiliary lights in general. The old man got me some nice Hella H4 housings for Christmas and they have improved my lighting significantly already.
My front end is torsion bars, not coil buckets or strut towers. The rear was coil buckets but the factory 4 link on these trucks is garbage anyways.
Also I can't afford coil overs hahaha, this truck has been built on a hobo budget
>>16653819
Also, neat. That'll do it. You might want add a mid section skid plate doesn't catch on to something as obstacles roll under your vehicle. I have a large sheet of titanium that I want to armour the entire bottom of my vehicle as well, or maybe even make a bumper out of it.
Did you weld the front bumper or bend it into place? Looks pretty rad, desu.
Wait a split tarnation second. What trucc is this!? Taynger's torsions are from 2010 and makes the ride much more comfortable compared to the silly Tacos' front end. Yeah, they're kinda annoying to lift so I agree if you're going for more than 4 inches, an SAS is the way to go.
Also no worries - that makes a lot of sense, actually. I suppose the leaf switch out wouldn't even be that difficult if you suddenly come across $1500 and decide to shove some bilsteins underneath.
Is there anything you can do with the removed torsion bars at the end, btw? Maybe use them to build a stinger up front? hehehe.
>>16637885
Get a 4wd chasis and swap frames. You'll basically have a prerunner
>>16653494
Yo I'm gonna steal this design to make a bumper fur my toyota hope you don't mind
>>16654097
Do it, Cummy. Do you know if you can weld titanium to steel using a nickel rod or something? I'm still looking for ideas to use up this 40x200 sheet of titanium I have lying around and am thinking of using it to build some skid plates.
But maybe it could be worth wrapping a bumper with titanium so it doesn't rust in this winter.
>>16654114
looks like they have them in tube form
http://www.ruggedridge.com/3-inch-tube-front-winch-bumper-titanium-11562-03.html
so i guess a solid kit front titanium bumper will be at least 3x the price. not gonna be cheap.
>>16654174
I don't think that bumper is actually titanium, if it was it would cost thousands of dollars, it's just painted "titanium" color.
You can't weld titanium to steel, they are dissimilar metals and won't fuse.
The only way I could think of attaching titanium sheet to steel would be explosive welding and I'm not even sure if that would work, let alone be practical.
If I had some Ti sheet and no use fur it I'd just sell it on eBay that shit is worth a lot of money.
>>16654097
Go for it bud, glad I could inspire someone hahah
>>16653860
Front bumper was cut with a plasma cutter and then welded together. I made a template using cardboard and traced all mympieces out with a paint pen and did it that way. The turn signal.holes and winch fairlead cutout were done with zip discs and I filled in the extra gouges with weld and ground them down.
The truck itself is a '90 4runner. The torsion bar setup is pretty shit from the start anyways haha. My rear spring swap was done for like 150$. I'm a machinist so I made the majority of my hangers and greasable bolts myself. The front is much more pricey as I'm not making nearly as many things for simplicity's sake. I would rather not have something homemade break because I can't replace it with store bought components. I'm trying to avoid a stinger. My girlfriend has one on her 4runner and it is such a pain in the ass trying g to work on the engine with that fuckin boner in sweatpants in the way.
>>16651913
I got some of it, but it's still caked everywhere. The back bumper is pretty much filled with it still.
>>16654238
Yeah it has a raw value of something stupid like $500. Honestly, I'm thinking of making a skid plate with them but these things are hard to bend without spending an additional $200 in using industrial metal presses for 30 minutes.
Explosive welding with nickel rods? I guess at that point, might as well go all out and buy a second plate to make the entire bumper out of titanium.
I put it up on the local craigslist a while back but people kept asking me stupid pricing ilke $100. And ebay shipping kills that option since it's a really large piece of industrial metal which is impossible to ship without asking some guy to pay $200 in shipping rates and $50 in import tariffs.

Mint condition as when it rolled out of the zavod in 1981.
But with some improvements.
Its a good start already, there's absolutly zero rust on it.
And parts are dirt cheap since i buy mine directly from a military storage through my contact who is also a car mechanic, most likely the best in north Russia.
I've seen him fix totally wrecked car to appear as new.
Making a UAZ mint should be one of the easiest project considering you can buy parts to build one by yourself if you wanted.
I wanted to turn an 80s toyota pickup into my adventure/over landing vehicle. I've seen a couple options near me and test drove one which ran well, 18r engine iirc.
4x4 comes with 4.10 gears already, what should I do to the t-case, if anything? I don't already have a specific vehicle I'm ready to jump on, just kicking around ideas.
And also, what style of bed is this? This isn't the one I got to test, just another truck near me. Looks cool, I'd do this to any truck I was turning into a purpose built adventure car. What other 80s toyota can you turn to for offroading, all 4runners aside?
