Nothing in the catalogue so here we go again

Starting off with a question I've been working on for a little bit. /o/ helped me determine that my car is running a bit rich, and that it can be adjusted.

This is the engine bay, in the bottom left corner is the CAI, nippon denso, someone said to go into the box to adjust the air? It seems sealed, the rubber gasket is really in there. Can I just pop it up, adjust it, and reseal it? How do?

Has anyone ever bought engine stuff from AliExpress.com? Its all Chinkshit, and I cant ever rely on their shit to not blow up, but I've been looking at some 1JZ stuff, and a few items have peaked my interest.

Example:
Clear cam cover

So I'm driving my car and stop at a sign and it just goes dead so I get a jump and just assume my battery was shite and replace it. Next I'm pulling out of a kwik trip and it dies and I jump it AGAIN despite the new battery. Now I'm assuming its the alternator and then it dies yet again at a red light and won't start with a jump so I take it down and am told it started right up and the alternator is fine
Any idea what the fuck is happening here?
Oh and most of these incidents are a week apart or at least a few days

What did old air cooled 911s do for cabin heat? There was no coolant to warm up a heater core. Did they use the oil cooler as a heater core? What about the older ones that didn't have oil coolers either?

When driving in OD the engine stutters from high 1k to low 2k rpms, but only occasionally like it has to breathe every few seconds. That doesnt happen in D. Already suspected it has a vacuum leak, and that the leak is the cause of the stuttering, but why would it only happen in OD? Should i just get the trans rebuilt/buy a new one?

i dunno what's the insurance is like in Ottawa but if it's anything like Toronto I'd probably pick based on insurance rates rather than the car if you don't really give a shit about the car itself.

if I remember right, Corollas are as bad with insurance as Civics. It might be better to go for a Mazda3 instead or even the full-size sedan of those brands based on the insurance savings alone. We pay the cost of the car if not more with annual insurance costs here anyways without collision/comprehensive, how cheap the car costs does not matter.

keep in mind this is based expectations where 300-400 canadian pesos a month is the norm for a male driver.

At those prices, it's cheap enough to just buy and examine their quality once they get to you. If it's shit, sell it for the same price on EBay - caveat emptor - and make them yourself.

This is only if you've got time to waste waiting on shit from Aliexpress - that shit takes a month to get to you unless you pay out the ass for expedited shipping.

They would pull in fresh filtered air from the outside, then using a fan blow the air near the rear engine to warm it up, then blow it up to the dash using a system of ducts out into the cabin. The system was super inefficient and would barley blow out warm air on super cold days.
>>
>>16620837
That stuttering could be caused by the transmission searching for the correct gear at your current speed. Get it to a tranny shop and have them test it before deciding if you want to rebuild/replace it

Generally it's OK. Some motorbike oil has special additives for wet clutches, and some stuff doubles as tranny fluid.

VW, Porsche, Chevy, and probably most others, used a system in which hot air was pulled off the exhaust. (The air runs across the exhaust in a similar way to a heater core). Very ineffective heat.

Sounds like faulty wiring mate. That's a right pain in the ass to diagnose
>>
>>16621196
Alternator and most PS pumps don't have greased pulleys. They are attached to a shaft that run through an internal bearing. You would need to disassemble the whole alternator to get to the bearings inside. Some vehicle have serviceable tensioner pulleys but it would be easer to just replace them.
>>

yeah thats one, of like twelve, things googling got me too

>>
>>16621239
When it dies, it is like a stutter/stall or just suddenly dead?
>>
>>16621264
As far as I can tell its sudden death
>>
>>16621272
Sounds electrical. Could be dozens of things, security system failing, intermittent sensor failure, ECU or BCM failure. It sucks but you may need to take it to a auto electric shop and have it diagnosed, which is pricey
>>
>>16621258
so a squirt of 1lube on the pulley shafts wouldn't be a good idea?
none are making any noise, but it's a 20 y/o car and it looks like even the alternator is OE
>>
>>16621413
No it wouldn't. That lube would pick up dirt over time, then cause friction, then premature failure.

My car's belt was squeaking, used a vacuum cleaner hose to identify the location and it was where the belt first comes in contact with the water pump pulley. Confirmed by spraying some water on it, and the squeak stopped for a few moments. Belt wasn't badly worn, replaced it anyway, squeak gone. A couple weeks later it's now squeaking again.
Is my water pump on its way out and the pulley doesn't want to turn as smoothly as it should? Did I get a shit belt?

By listening and a partner. Find the minimum speed you need to create the problem, narrow down the side and if its front or back. Then inspect the noisy side. See if you can find anything obvious. Then jack up the car and see if you can create the sound by lifting and turning the wheel.

To be honest it sounds like a blown shock/strut

In turbocharged cars, is the turbo always feeding air into the engine? I just don't understand what happens when you aren't driving in "boost".
>>
>>16620185
Ive owned a 5mge, factory 5 speed, mx63 & later swapped it with a 6mge. In my own experience in tinkering with the maf sensors ive gotten from the junkyard. I wouldny reccomend opening it up cause since their pretty old and fragile. I can tell you tho that there is adjusment on the airflow sensor and on the throttle body. It should be on top on the side youll see a spot where you can put a flat head to it and adjust i wouldnt mess with it too much unless you can have more precise measurements as i was fuel cutting at one point cause i must have open it up too much. Hopefully this helps.
>>
>>16621965
Yes the turbo is always being spun even at idle, and feeding the engine but its equal to the air coming in from outside the system. When you raise the RPM's up the turbo spins faster which adds "boost" to the intake manifold, thus raising the PSI higher in the intake manifold than it would be without the turbo

I need help from a kind suspension-fag. I had my car lowered a while back and now I feel like it handles worse than stock. I had it aligned like you're supposed to but now I feel that there is a lot more body roll than there was before and it oversteers instead of the sharper turning I was used to.

Any opinions on this?

New eibach prokit springs and koni shocks. It wasn't a big drop or anything and the ride feels fine for the most part except when I'm turning corners. Steering is slower, it over steers and it rolls a lot more. I'm not even a fast driver either. I take my corners normally.

My car is a regular 2008 Mazda 3.

After replacing the seals in my power steering my cars decided to die at low RPMs and theres a 'whirring' noise which my local valvoline has informed me as most certainly my power steering
After some chat with another /o/fag i have determined it is my power steering sensor which has died on me.
On my car the sensor isnt sold individual of the pump, so i can either go to a junk yard and hope i get a sensor that will work for probably $20, or i can say fuck it and buy a pump, which costs $106 at autozone (pic related) which I believe has the sensor with it (I'll have to call the store to confirm this since their website doesnt say)
Also should i pick up a $10 inline filter

Look where ur belts are and find the ac conpressor its usually held on by 3 or 4 bolts. Then figure out how to get to it. Remove p/s pump, alternator if they are in the way. U might need to take out ur radiator. Just disconnect the hoses for that and drain. Then unplug the fans n pull out. Put a screwdriver into ur AC line valves to ensure its pressure free. U might have sum ac pump oil comeout. Thats normal. Disconnect the lines from the compressor to the evaporator in the dash. Take off compressor and replace with an ac delete pulley. Put everything back on and tighten ur belts. Twist the belts so they can only twist at a 90° angle at the longest point then adjust from there if u need to. If u want to remove the evaporaor u may need a plastic box to replace the evap to go from the blower to the matrix. U can get the box thing from a non ac version of ur car or online. Or just leave the evap in. Or u could just pull the belt off the pulley if the belt doesnt run anything. About $40-60 fod the pulley and a 4 hour job for someone with no experience.

Friend of mine has a 94 C1500, engine was just rebuilt. Said he would sell it to me for $800. Can probably get him a little lower. Auto transmission that is slipping, so I would most likely replace it straight out.

Will I get fucked on this or not? I realize there may be more work than just the tranny, but I wanted to get an older truck to have fun with and be able to repair myself. I dunno what engine it has, but I don't plan on towing with it anyway so I doubt it will bother me too much. I know the tranny is auto otherwise I would buy it right now because clutch replacements are easy.

I assume swapping in a manual tranny wouldn't be worth it at the end of the day unless I was /extremely/ enthusiastic about it.

I just had my '01 Sentra 1.8's battery, alternator, pulley system, and belts replaced. It drove fine all weekend and now it's misfiring.

With the check engine light flashing and a really rough ride, I don't want to drive it at all. Could that have anything to do with the service?

That's a true misfire. New alternator and battery shouldn't cause that. Usually is a bad plug, cool, wire. But in some cases it could be a ECM fault. Get the vehicle scanned and find which cylinder the misfire is coming from.

And I would recommend factory coils and plugs, I always have problems with aftermarket

the clutch feels fine, it was just like 2 or 3 instances where it acted up.

Quick question for anyone who knows something about paint guns;

Is there any difference in the finish between HVLP and LVLP spray guns? I know that they require different techniques, and that HVLP guns atomize the paint better. I've got a 5CFM compressor, which won't be enough to run any HVLP gun continuously, since they all seem to take 10+CFM

If I'm not mentally disabled, not in a rush, and have at least some experience working on vehicles, how does the expense of buying a functional vehicle versus buying a shit bucket with a surviving frame but blown out engine and then rebuilding the engine compare?

I'm trying to use a different style center cap on my wheels, but I'm having some fitment issues. The wheels are OZ Racing wheels, and the cap I'm trying to use is an original OZ Racing cap. I know the cap should fit, but I'm having some trouble with it. The previous owner of my wheels re-tapped the hole for the bolt that holds the center caps, and he did it on a slight angle, which I'm guessing he did by mistake. Because the bolt goes in on a slight angle, it's making the whole center cap sit off-center, and because of that it won't sit flush with the face of the wheel. Since it's aluminum and I don't have a way of welding the hole for the bolt, would something like JB weld work? The hole isn't anything structural, it's just used to hold the center cap on, so the bolt doesn't need to be torqued down too tight, and I don't have to worry about any real danger should the JB weld fail. Will this stuff be able to be tapped, and if so, how well will it hold up? These caps aren't cheap, so I'd rather not have them fall off while I'm driving.
>>
>>16629647
ya, HVLP jobs can be 10/10 but u need giant compressors and a fully enclosed paint box while LVLP guns are at best 8/10, a step above rattlecan resprays but can be used with normal compressors; you should still using a paint box for best results bu it's less critical

I'm currently a manager at a store for this company, and lemme tell you, most of the guys at these stores genuinely wanna help you. I never sell a tire for full price, I always give whatever discount I can. We'll hook you up with free rotations/balancing too. And free flat repairs, as long as the tire can be repaired. We don't make commission so you don't have to worry about us trying to sell you a tire just for our own gain.
>>
>>16631611
Depends on the turn abs how fast I'm going. Sometimes I can be going 50 in 4th, shift into neutral, feather the brake and take the turn that way, going back to 3rd.

Other times the turn could be sharper or up a hill, in which case I go to neutral, coast, find the right gear mid turn, shift abs give it gas to make the turn. I could be wrong, but I haven't wrecked yet so
>>
>>16631610
It really depends on the vehicle. Look on the emissions tag on the bottom side of the hood. It should have idle speed on there.

>>16631611
You can do that, yes, but leaving it in gear you can put power on and maintain speed through the turn as well as eliminating a shift (and synchro/clutch wear) coming out of the turn. Learn to rev-match your downshifts and your drivetrain will love you.

>>16632300
Yes there's a pressure valve: the radiator cap. The radiator and block are completely full of coolant in an overflow system. When the system reaches full operating pressure, any excess coolant will be pushed out into the overflow tank. When it cools off and the pressure drops, coolant is drawn back into the system. I'm not entirely sure why everyone went to this method of designing a cooling system, but I think it's to keep air out.
Any air that's in there will go out through the radiator cap, and through the overflow tank, and will be replaced by coolant.

>>
>>16634874
Keep inner part of tie rod firm with a spanner, use another spanner to loosen the nut, unscrew the outer part of tie rod by hand.
The inner part should have a hex shape somewhere (or at least two flat sides where you can fit a spanner) specifically so you can keep it from rotating while you loosen the nut. Alternatively, use vice grips or equivalent tool to do the job if there is no hex shape or if it's rounded out.

If you want to replace the whole thing, you have to remove the rubber booth and loosen the nut/sleeve that keeps the inner joint fixed to the steering rack.
>>
>>16634999
Symptoms of a faulty head gasket:

- white smoke from the exhaust (caused by water leaking in the cylinders) and coolant level getting progressively low
- blue smoke in the exhaust (caused by oil leaking in the cylinders) and oil level getting progressively low
- creamy and light-brown coloured emulsion in the oil (caused by coolant leaking in the lubricating system), easily found by removing the oil cap and taking a look inside
- brown/green coloured gunk in the coolant (caused by oil leaking into the cooling system), visible in the coolant reservoir tank
- constant bubbling in the coolant system (caused by cylinder pressure leaking into the coolant system), spottable in the coolant reservoir tank, bubbling should increase with engine speed or only appear after a certain RPM
- rough idle and general rough operation of the engine (caused by loss of compression)

If your car has none of those symptoms, then the head gasket is most likely not the problem.

If it's a stock radio, you can take it out, read the label on the back, call a dealer and have them tell you the code.

Should I run my 2.0 turbo diesel engine on a 15w-40 oil during a long journey?

Do you mean as a top up or as a total replacement?

You should look at the API/ACEA specs of the oil and make sure those are the same as what the manual says, it's much more important to use the same API/ACEA specs than the same viscosity.

So, explain to me pls:

I've heard the phrase "drop a gear," when people talk about stoplight racing, to go faster. I've only been learning manual for about a month, but this is what I take it to mean.

Car makes more hp at higher rpm, you cruise in 4th @3k making only so much, if you were to drop to 3rd (even possible) you'd be making higher rpm and therefore more hp, right? Bad for trans but good for speed?

Way off base, is there another explanation? Just an innocuous phrase that means nothing?
>>
>>16635993
You got it figured out.

Mostly a passing thing for being an aggressive road driver.

I don't know why you'd be in a cruising scenario during a race, full throttle or full brake, no inbetween bullshit.

OD is an over driven gear for cruising and getting good fuel economy. Not for fast acceleration.
You would drop out of OD to a lower gear in a high load situation.

>>
>>16635993
You drop a gear because you have more available torque that what you would have in the gear you are in.
Torque is multiplied by the gear ratio, so a lower gear means more torque at the wheels at any given RPM, but less top speed than the higher gear (unless the higher gear is an overdrive, but that's another story). If you don't understand why, just google how transmissions work to get a quick lecture on it.

It's useful when you need to accelerate as hard as possible (like the stoplight racing you mentioned) or for those occasions where accelerating in the current gear would take too much and be potentially dangerous (like when passing someone).

It's not just because the engine makes more power at higher RPM that you downshift, it's mostly because of the torque multiplication the gearbox allows you to have.
>>

Low oil pressure fucked your shit m8. One or all of these played out.

-hydraulic timing chain tensioner lost pressure and let timing chain jump teeth resulting in bent valves
-VVT actuator was fucked by low oil pressure
-Rod/Main bearings were fucked by low oil pressure.

>hydraulic timing chain tensioner lost pressure and let timing chain jump teeth resulting in bent valves
This is what I thought, but the timing is right, so how can it have jumped teeth?

>-VVT actuator was fucked by low oil pressure
Also possible

>-Rod/Main bearings were fucked by low oil pressure.
The mechanic definitely thought it was coming from the top end/valves. Would bearings failing be accompanied by power loss?

Guess a good first option would be checking compression?

The most important thing to take into consideration is price. Otherwise, it's completely up to you. Personally, I'd also prefer to do a restoration or restomod from the ground up, i.e. fix everything starting from the bare frame, wiring etc. If you get a car that's halfway there already, you'll save a lot of time and money but might feel like you weren't as involved as you would like to have been. On the other hand, it can be challenging and costly to fix a car that's too far gone, e.g. rust, welding, frayed wires, broken parts that are no longer available etc.

tl;dr weigh up your options and choose according to what you prefer

not necessarily bad but you can't take advantage of engine braking, and you'd have a delay trying to shift back into gear if suddenly you don't have to stop anymore.

Theres also the issue that most cars waste gas idling vs engine braking where its using almost no gas.

Besides Craig's List, you should try the old traditional sources such as those free "autotrader" type tabloids at your local supermarket. Well, a lot of supermarkets don't have dispensers for those free tabloids, but some still do. Look for them.

Does my car have an alternator problem? A couple weeks back my car started make a buzzing/clicking noise when cold and the same 6 warning lights would turn on but I could still use the car fine. Now the 6 lights aren't on but if I use anything electrical like the windows or brakes the lights will turn on and the car will accelerate slower plus the dash will start turning on/off and will start displaying different things like the fuel. Also when I got home the car died turning into the parking lot plus I had to jump start the car to get it running again. Well apparently your engine doesn't have hydraulic lifters just solid ones which look exactly like the ones in the video.

So the chance of them being your issue is nil.
Still though they are directly under the camshafts and should all be level and at the same height with the camshaft removed.

>TL;DR: Can a bigger BOV or a double BOV setup fix boost surge?

Pic related.

My car has turbo surge. I already asked here once and verified it with info on the Garrett website: the reason is most likely that the turbocharger I'm using is too big for the engine.

I don't care for changing either the turbo or the engine, both are fun and working just fine, great power and enough drivability. I already have a slightly old GReddy BOV (can't be seen in pic but it's on the pipe between the IC and TB) and I've fiddled with the adjusment as much as possible but I still get surge.

Turbo flutter sounds great but once you consider it's cause I fear for the life of muh turbo. Also, surge affects engine response sometimes and you can definitely feel it and see it on the boost gauge.

I saw a picture of a supercharged FA20 engine on ShillHunters with twin HKS BOVs and that got me thinking: would that fix my problem? Either that or getting a bigger, adjustable BOV?

Read the part number on your motor and find the same one from a scrapyard.
It's unlikely other motors made for other cars will work the same (first obstacle being mounting points), you are better off finding the one made for your car or a different version of your car (like a wagon/sedan) so you can be sure it will work as intended.
This is especially true if your car is recent enough to have adjustable wiper frequency or, even worse, a control module inside the motor itself.

an adjustable one would help since you are obviously running too much boost; also adjusting the wastegate to open earlier would help
SURGE IS THREE THINGS:
>lack of adequate airflow
>high pressure spike (da surge)
>compressor moving at incredibly hihg speeds

>There is also another set of less common conditions that can lead to compressor surge. If a turbo is incorrectly matched to an engine, it is possible for the engine to spool the turbo before the airflow through the compressor and into the engine is high enough to avoid surge. As such, the turbo will operate in the surge region even with the throttle open.

Sensor (One mechanic has suspects a O2 sensor) has gone bad. Symptoms:
>Check Engine comes on if idling for 2+ minutes.
>Also comes on when on the highway for extended periods
>Exit ramps from the highway also trigger it
>Difference in exhaust note upon it happening
>Car smells of gas when turned off after trips where the light comes on
>Regular city driving does not trigger it

Codes from O'Reilly's:
35 - Idle Air Control circuit (IAC)(3.4L)
>Chilton's Says:Idle RPM too high or too too high. Check minimum idle speed, check fuel pressure, check for leaking injector and obstructions in the throttle body. Replace the IAC Valve.
46 - Pass Key Circuit
>Check for faulty circuit from ignition switch to theft detterent module or ECM/PCM
75 - Digital EGR Solenoid Malfunction #1 + 76 - Digital EGR Solenoid Malfunction #2 + 77 - Digital EGR Solenoid Malfunction #3
>Check the digital EGR circuit for number # solenoid for possible short to ground or open circuit in the solenoid wiring

I'm light on mechanical knowledge, but cleaning the IAC valve did not solve the problem. There doesn't appear to be any clog in the fuel system and the exhaust always comes out clean of smoke (but the gas smell is there).

OBD I codes, as the car is a 1994 3.4L V6
One local shop actually tuirned me away because they wouldn't accept the codes I had written down, saying they weren't real (asking for P#### codes) and then stating that they wouldn't diagnose it without codes, and lacked an OBD I scanner.

Need some help with this one guys. I want to buy a 1989 Nissan Hardbody from Arizona but it has 49 state emission. Would it be possible for me to register this car in California. Thanks in advance.

Front end bushings and ball joints could also be to blame, I'd check those first

How dangerous is it to drive around with your wheel nuts not torqued to spec? I took a wheel off to check something and forgot I don't have a torque wrench. I got the nuts as tight as I could with a ratchet. Would it be safe enough to drive to the store to get one?

You probably exceeded the torque spec anyway by pulling with all your force.
Lug nuts are usually in the 60 - 120 Nm range depending on the car, if you ever tried tightening something in that range with a ratchet-sized wrench you would know it takes far less than your full body power to click it.

So you are probably fine, bring it to a mechanic and have them properly torqued down if you are really worried, but I wouldn't lose sleep on that.

Also loose nuts don't just pop out of the wheel without warning and at the same time, you will have plenty of audible warning and steering wheel vibration before the situation gets really dangerous.

I have my first car that is my current daily driver and its kind of falling apart, idles bad, needs new rear shocks, rusting, CEL probably going to be on forever. Should I fix it up and sell it or just scrap it? I personally want to fix it up and sell it, but my mom thinks it's not worth spending the money

Is it worth it to you? I'm spending on my $500 shitbox even though it most likely isnt worth it if I want to sell it.
