What went wrong?
Stock hatchbacks with 300hp+
Meanwhile the WRX is still making the same power it did a decade ago.
Stopped competing in WRC and forced out of WRC competition by smaller cars and coasted on past successes while making them heavier and softer and more expensive.
Say what you will about Mitsubishi, they at least stayed true to the Lancers roots, a homologated special, a race car for the street. Even after they ran out of money to go racing.

Shame that only the UK got the 350~440 HP Evo X, while North America was left with just the 290 HP models.
I drove a 2016 base-trim Lancer rental, and it was a poor experience. Interior was as bad as a 2005 Corolla with cheap plastic everywhere.

All those base model 3 series that are ugly as sin that /o/ likes to complain about are the same price as a base model WRX while also possessing some legitimacy towards both being a luxury brand and a sports brand whereas WRX can only claim the latter while still putting out far less power from an older engine.
Also both have their reliability issues so it can't even win against the memebrand there either.
times change
standard german family diesel saloons nowadays go quicker, are safer have 5x better economy and are generally better in every way. you don't look like a massive bellend driving one either
subarus/evos became obsolete over 10 years ago now but people still buy them to cling onto the past

t. retard
The new WRX smokes just about every rival in its price range. You would be literally mentally handicapped to deny this

The WRX's engine isn't even that old, the FA and FB series are still in growing stages practically. The STI however....
