I can understand wanting to defeat the airbag jew because they cause about as much injury as they prevent (>tfw removing any factory airbags including substituting the airbag steering wheel for a barebone steering wheel is illegal here) but you gotta be a certified retard to want to drive without seatbelts, those are empirically proven to save you.

there are situations in which you dont want a seatbelt. of course i wear one usually, but there are situations.

for instance driving a truck on tiny roads in mountainous areas, or using your car in a way that requres you not you have a seatbeld on. a buddy of mine is working in forestry and he always has the belt behind his back, because when he uses the pickup to drive deerfood dont a hundred meters in the forest, unload it, and drive up again, the sound is just an annoyance.

i personally drive a vehicle from the 90's so i dont care. but everytime a friend drives me home, and a few meters before the car comes to a stop i unbuckle myself and that FUCKING NOISE start, i get angry. that fucking car is not my mother. i know when and why im unbuckling myself.

So seatbelts didn't change death rates because people thought they could drive more dangerously if they had them.

The difference to now is that you'd stop wearing your seatbelt and sitll drive more dangerously, or at least everyone around you would still drive more dangerously.

>The point, stresses Adams, is that drivers who feel safe may actually increase the risk that they pose to other drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians and their own passengers (while an average of 80% of drivers buckle up, only 68% of their rear-seat passengers do). And risk compensation is hardly confined to the act of driving a car. Think of a trapeze artist, suggests Adams, or a rock climber, motorcyclist or college kid on a hot date. Add some safety equipment to the equation — a net, rope, helmet or a condom respectively — and the person may try maneuvers that he or she would otherwise consider foolish. In the case of seat belts, instead of a simple, straightforward reduction in deaths, the end result is actually a more complicated redistribution of risk and fatalities.
Oh come the fuck on. This argument is fucking stupid. The argument is that you get complacent that you wear a seat belt and drive riskier. All else equal, the seat belt will allow you to survive accidents that were not survivable without a seatbelt and survive with less injury in accidents survivable without a seatbelt.

To be honest, there is a reason.

I worked at quick in and out lube stop. And I'd individually be going in and out of 20 different cars a day, and doing that for years broke my habit of grabbing the seat belt, and buckling up.

And, then it's just been a constant thing since then. Now I just outright refuse to do it because they made it illegal.

I used to buckle up all the time.
>>
>>16598280
Dead people aren't legal parties.
>>
>>16598265

That also makes the assumption that the driver driving 'safely' without a seatbelt is the one causing the crash. What if he gets slammed in the side by someone running a red light or something. He could be doing 15mph forwards and suddenly 40mph sideways thrown round inside the car like that video of the bloke throwing the concrete slab in the washing machine. His argument isn't full retard because there is some merit in what he's saying about people wrapped up in safety gear probably will take more risks, but other people can always be a factor.

He's a fucking geography prof, and educated people can be some of the stupidest people you know. He's overanalyzing a simple issue in an "intellectual fashion".

Let's take the opposite example, and maybe make it less severe. Let's say every time someone sneezed and a person didn't say "bless you", they got punched in the dick. You would probably see a reduction in the number of times someone sneezed and no one said "bless you" to them.

His example is to point out that risk is not in a vacuum, and that while seat belts likely reduce injury and deaths in accidents on the whole, they do not linearly reduce risk in every single accident ever because, *theoretically*, some drivers may engage in riskier manuvers when they have a feeling of "safety" from wearing a seat belt. Just as some people may feel more comfortable in a higher car (e.g. SUV) or one with all wheel drive).

The article you link to has nothing really to do with the safety that a seat belt adds. It's an attempt to be a smug pseudointellectual about how life and changes don't exist in a vacuum. He's technically correct in that if a person drives like a fucking moron only because they wear a seat belt then they may drive in a way that results in a serious injury/fatal accident. But it's really out on a fucking limb, and assumes that a driver's common sense goes out the window the moment they "click" in a seat belt.

If you believe you personally would go mind numbingly retarded and do risky shit because you clicked in a seat belt and that is why wearing a seat belt is more dangerous - then I pity how your brain works.

Funny (or demented) enough, there's a number of dashcam videos in China where after a car hits someone, they back up and run over the person repeatedly. Same thing in China.

If the person has family they may sue and you have to settle for the death for $30-$50K, but if that person lives with injury it can cost many times more.

tl;dr Iowa, Illinois, and New Hampshire don't require motorcycle drivers to wear helmets. 19 states have no emissions inspections for non-commercial vehicles, most others have it in the major metropolitan areas. Fewer states require annual or biennial safety inspections. I agree that it should be generally required for both in all states.

The helmet thing is a freedom thing, I guess they figure you're already roadkill at the point you get in an accident on a bike most likely, but for less severe accidents a helmet seriously reduces the risk of head injury.

>In April a BMW racing through a fruit market in Foshan in China’s Guangdong province knocked down a 2-year-old girl and rolled over her head. As the girl’s grandmother shouted, “Stop! You’ve hit a child!” the BMW’s driver paused, then switched into reverse and backed up over the girl. The woman at the wheel drove forward once more, crushing the girl for a third time. When she finally got out from the BMW, the unlicensed driver immediately offered the horrified family a deal: “Don’t say that I was driving the car,” she said. “Say it was my husband. We can give you money.”

Freedom of choice, I guess. New Hampshire is a state with the motto "Live free or die". They considered a helmet law at one point and the bikers protested it (ironically, one of them died on the way to the protest when he was hit and had a fatal head injury) and it was put aside.

Some people consider it, along with seat belts, to be another symptom of the creeping "nanny state" making decisions on behalf of the people. I don't think seatbelts are overreach, a small portion of the country does.

Americans have a preverted idea of what freedom is.
If you're too stupid to understand that wearing a helmet will save your life there's nothing wrong in forcing you to wear a helmet.
Imagine if that person were to have a child as a passenger and wouldn't make him/hear wear a helmet. Or a seatbelt if they were in a car. The fact that he's allowed to do that because the state thinks making the use of a helmet and seatbelts compulsive is somehow against "freedom" makes me mad.

Fight for the real important things like education and healthcare, you fucking retarded americans, not for FREEDOM.
>>
>>16598422
Or at least for actual freedom of self expression and not only for freedom to act like a gigantic retard.
>>
I own an old wrangler YJ that the previous owner removed the seatbelts from. Ive driven past cops and theyve made eye contact with me and saw that I wasnt buckled up and didnt bother ticketing me. I think they might just not wanna waste time on such a small thing.
>>
>>16598422
Every state enforces seat belt usage for legal minors in the US, and 49 of them require seat belts for all minors in any seat and either require front seat drivers or all drivers older than that to wear seatbelts. Not the same as the helmet laws.
>>
>>16598440
In one state (New Hampshire) adults are not required to wear seatbelts, in 18 others you can be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt as an adult/front seat passenger, but they cannot pull you over solely for not wearing a seat belt (most states do allow cops to pull you over + ticket you for failure to wear, which is called primary enforcement).

Even in states where primary enforcement exists it's up to a cop to notice and care enough to pull you over.
>>

>>
>>16598313
If a vehicle has a roof, you need a seatbelt. If it's open, you don't because if it rolled over you'd be fucked. It was this was 15 years ago when I took tractor safety classes. Old open cab tractors had no protection in case of a rollover so no seatbelt, so you can try to jump clear.

In a closed cab tractor, safest to be strapped in so the rollcage can do its job.

Same logic applies to things like motorcycles. The helmet argument is just you spouting edgelord bullshit.

The fact that this isn't obvious to you shows how dumb you are.

for instance, talk to truck drivers driving on dangerous roads, forestry in mountainous areas. talk to cab drivers. countless people have been stabbed into their necks while some asshole from behind was fixing you onto the seat by grabbing your seatbelt. thats why in many countries, cabies arent required to wear seatbelts when clients are in.

Perhaps, as a compromise for all the people who are too edgy:

Make seatbelt wearing mandatory for speeds over 30mph, so you don't die when you're obese and go off-roading, but you also don't die when doing 70mph and rear-ending a soccer mom who slammed the breaks too late.

It isn't the government's job to choose what's best for you. It's their job to protect your right to choose for yourself, and to ensure that other peoples' rights aren't infringed by your choices.

I agree that laws should be in place for minors, as they may not have the mental capacity to choose, or their parents may endanger them. But once you're an adult, and you're responsible for your own actions and their consequences, it should be your own right to choose, as long as it doesn't endanger others or infringe their rights. Obviously not wearing a helmet is incredibly stupid for yourself, but I guess you could say you have a right to be stupid if you so choose, so long as it doesn't harm others.

I personally am not even against helmet laws, but I feel like these points apply to a lot of other areas in government.

>have retarded passenger in car who doesn't like wearing seatbelt
>begin driving, seatbelt sound starts beeping

Thanks car.

>that happened

Seatbelts are designed to strangle crash survivors so they don't sue.

Can we stop this meme that the seabelt would have saved him in this situation?

There was enough force to fling him out of the car 50 feet into the air.

If he had his seatbelt on, his ribs would have been crushed and he'd have died regardless

he was going to die regardless. might as well go out like a beautiful swan

>>16602508
>not yelling at the cunt to put their fucking seatbelt on
>not brake checking them at the first stop sign so their head bounces off the dash

My ride, my rules, my $150 ticket if they get me pinched for them trying to feel "cool."

Please show me a case where a 80MPH crash with a seatbelt crushed someones ribs and killed them.

Found the morbidly obese racist.

You are angry at seat belts because you have to lift up your huge body just to get at where the seat belt buckle is.

>physics, how do they work?
>whatever, I'll just eat another cheeseburger

I never wear one and have been in several collisions, hasn't seemed to make a difference. I just find them terribly constriction and uncomfortable desu

Yeah, but there shouldn't be.

This is the same retard logic used for people not wearing a harnes on access platforms. You won't have the time to make the decision or the ability to do so because the laws of physics don't work favourably for you under these conditions

And disregarding safety completely, a fatal road accident means the road is closed longer and emergency services are tied down longer. Nobody gives a fuck if you die trying to look the coolest edge master in your Facebook gang but people do give a Shit if they loose 3 hours pay because somebody is sweeping your ass/spine/brain smoothy off the road and can't get to work
